00:00James Hamilton writes in the magazine Indirectional.
00:02He was talking about a time a long time ago.
00:05As a matter of fact, you probably would have to ask your grandparents about days like this.
00:10These were days before the refrigerator.
00:14Now I know we can't think back that far, most of us.
00:16I can't think back to a time when we did not have a refrigerator.
00:20But in those days, they didn't have refrigerators.
00:22They had what they called ice houses.
00:25And so during the wintertime, if you're in an area that's cold enough,
00:27the rivers would freeze over and the lakes would freeze over
00:30and they would go out with these large saws
00:33and they would saw large blocks of ice
00:35and they would transport them to the ice house.
00:37And the ice house had no windows in it
00:39and the door was sealed very tight.
00:42Then they would throw sawdust over the top of the ice
00:44and mostly it would make it all the way into the summer months.
00:48It lasted a long time inside these ice houses.
00:51One day, this worker was in the ice house,
00:53loading the ice in there,
00:55and he lost his expensive watch.
00:58He couldn't find it.
00:59He looked on the ground,
01:00he got on his hands and knees,
01:01he looked all over the place,
01:02couldn't find his watch at all.
01:04So a couple of other men that worked with him went in
01:06and thought that they could perhaps find his watch.
01:08They came out a few months later,
01:09they couldn't find his watch anywhere.
01:11Well, this young guy,
01:12this young man was listening to them talk
01:15and he thought he could find it.
01:17So when they were discussing this at the lunch hour,
01:19he went into the room,
01:21about five minutes later,
01:22we get back out and have a watch in his hand.
01:24And the owner of the watch says,
01:26how did you do that?
01:27How did you find it when we could not find it?
01:30And the young man said simply this,
01:32I went into the ice house,
01:35I lay down on the floor
01:37and I was absolutely silent.
01:40And soon I heard the ticking as a watch.
01:47Often the question is not whether God is speaking,
01:51but whether we are silent enough to hear it.
01:55When we think over there,
01:56this verse in Psalm 46,
01:58be still and know that I am God.
01:59How often in our busy life,
02:02I know, I'm with you,
02:03life happens.
02:05You get a flat tire,
02:07you have a sickness in the family.
02:08Life happens and you get busy.
02:10I understand, I'm there with you.
02:11I get it.
02:16We're busy.
02:17We tend to be rushed
02:19and often we are too preoccupied with ourselves.
02:23But in our worship of God,
02:24do we take the time to slow down enough
02:27to be still,
02:30to listen to the voice of God?
02:32We can't enter in rushed.
02:34We can't enter in distracted.
02:35We have to be focused on the main thing
02:37and the main thing is the worship of God,
02:40our state world,
02:41our Redeemer, Jesus Christ.
02:44We come into His presence.
02:45And I know when I say that term,
02:47come into His presence immediately,
02:48you're thinking,
02:48well, God is omnipresent.
02:49He is everywhere present.
02:50I got that.
02:51I understand that.
02:52I'm going to use the phrase
02:53a couple of times in this sermon.
02:54What I simply mean is
02:55our acknowledgement of His presence.
02:58We know He's everywhere present.
02:59We understand it.
03:00So when we say we're entering into His presence,
03:02we're acknowledging that we're meeting together
03:04for the solemn idea of worshiping God
03:07together in a corporate community
03:08or maybe in your family devotions at home.
03:11So I'll use the term
03:12in the presence of God.
03:14Often when we come into the presence of God,
03:16we haven't adequately taken time
03:17to prepare our hearts
03:18so our heart is not in the right spot.
03:21We tend to rush in.
03:25We have our timetable.
03:26We've got to hurry up.
03:27We've got to get out.
03:28We've got to get somewhere else.
03:29And we miss the whole purpose
03:30of meaningful worship.
03:32A.W. Tozer said this,
03:34God has not bowed to our nervous haste
03:37nor embraced our machine age.
03:39The man who would know God
03:41must give time to Him.
03:45The man who knows God
03:46or the woman who wants to know God
03:48must give time,
03:48must adequately prepare themselves
03:50to enter into His presence,
03:52to acknowledge His rule in our life,
03:55acknowledge His salvation order.
03:59In Ecclesiastes chapter 5,
04:00now we've been typically going
04:01through an entire chapter.
04:02In this case, we're not going to.
04:03It's just too many verses.
04:04And the main thrust we want to look at
04:06is we're just going through 7 today.
04:07We want to talk about
04:08meaningful worship in this,
04:10how we prepare ourselves
04:11for meaningful worship,
04:12how we live life above the sun.
04:15Now we've used that term often.
04:16Live life under the sun
04:17is human existence under the sun
04:19that all humans experience.
04:21But Solomon and God
04:22wants us to live our life
04:23above the sun.
04:24And above the sun,
04:25these are the eternal areas.
04:27These are the ones that are permanent.
04:28This is the place where God
04:29is residing in heaven
04:30and His will will always be accomplished.
04:33Life under the sun
04:34is transitory and temporary.
04:35So God must be held in awe.
04:40He says,
04:41God must be held in awe
04:42by entering His presence
04:44with reverence,
04:45worshiping Him in integrity,
04:48and keeping promises made.
04:50This is what Solomon wants to tell us today.
04:52What is meaningful worship?
04:53He's guided us down.
04:55He's been through all kinds of places.
04:56He's been to the marketplace.
04:57He's been to all different kinds of places.
04:59Now He's taking us to a brand new location today.
05:01If we're going to live
05:03the well-lived life,
05:04we have to understand
05:05that God is at the center
05:07of a well-lived life.
05:09He's not at the peripheral.
05:10He's not on the outside.
05:12He's in the very center of a well.
05:13He's the very hub
05:14of our existence, God is.
05:16The well-lived life
05:17has gone to center.
05:20So after speaking about
05:21the social aspect of humanity
05:22that we saw last week,
05:23the idea we would crave
05:24to live in community
05:25with other people,
05:25and a well-lived life
05:26is live in community,
05:28not in isolation.
05:29That's what He showed us last week.
05:30So the social aspect of humanity,
05:33Solomon now addresses
05:34the relationship
05:34between God and humanity.
05:36The well-lived life
05:38has God at the center of it
05:40is what He wants to tell us.
05:42So look at verses 1-3
05:43as He describes
05:44now the new location
05:46He's taking us to.
05:47He's taking us now
05:48to the temple.
05:49Look at verses 1-3.
05:52He encourages us
05:54or He admonishes us
05:56or He instructs us
05:57so however you want
05:57to use the phrase.
05:58He says,
06:00Guard your steps
06:01when you go to the house of God.
06:04To draw near to listen
06:06is better than to offer
06:08the sacrifice of fools,
06:10for they do not know
06:12that they are doing evil.
06:14Be not rash with your words.
06:16So now we're moving
06:17to the idea of us
06:18communicating with God
06:19and it could be in prayer
06:20and it could be in other things
06:21or just speaking as a whole.
06:23Be not rash with your mouth,
06:26nor let your heart
06:27be hasty to utter
06:28a word before God
06:30for God is in heaven
06:32and you are on earth.
06:34Therefore let your words
06:36be few
06:36for a dream comes
06:38with much business
06:39and a fool's voice
06:41with many words.
06:44So the very first thing
06:45he wants us to say
06:45when we come into
06:46the presence of God
06:47to worship in the temple
06:48we have to be prepared
06:50to present worship to Him.
06:52that's meaningful.
06:54That's meaningful.
06:55That has something behind it.
06:57It's not empty.
06:57It's not vain.
06:58It's not striving
06:58after the wind
06:59as Solomon would say.
07:02See, worship is an
07:03above the sun activity.
07:05It's not an
07:05under the sun activity.
07:06It's an above the sun activity.
07:08Under the sun,
07:09when we worship under the sun,
07:10that's what we call idolatry.
07:12When we worship creatures
07:13or statues under the day,
07:15that's an under the sun worship.
07:16That's idolatry.
07:17Above the sun worship
07:18is God.
07:19Worshiping Him,
07:20the creator of all things
07:21and the sustainer of all.
07:23Man is in essence
07:25a worshiper.
07:26Go to any tribe or people,
07:29any clan of people,
07:30and they will have
07:30some sort of deity
07:32that they worship.
07:33And in sophisticated nations
07:34who get beyond
07:35all of this stuff,
07:36they have deities too.
07:38It's called themselves.
07:40Man is a worshiper.
07:41He is a worshiper
07:42by his creation.
07:44He worships.
07:45But how can we worship
07:46meaningfully?
07:47The attitude when approaching God
07:50according to Solomon
07:51is the same as
07:52it was directed towards Moses.
07:54Guard your steps.
07:56Don't hastily go
07:57into the presence of God.
07:59Be prepared in your heart
08:00when you meet Him
08:01because when you meet Him,
08:03it is a holy endeavor.
08:06That's why in Exodus chapter 3
08:08we see this.
08:09Then he said,
08:10do not come near,
08:11he's talking to Moses,
08:12this is a burning bush experience,
08:13bush is burning,
08:14turns his eyes to see it.
08:15Do not come near,
08:17take your sandals
08:18off your feet
08:18for the place
08:19on which you are standing
08:20is holy ground.
08:22So Moses wasn't just
08:23to rush into the presence
08:24of God.
08:25Moses was to take his,
08:26in fact he was to take
08:26his shoes off
08:27to realize the place
08:28he's standing
08:29is God's very presence
08:30instead.
08:31When we enter
08:32into meaningful worship
08:33we have to be prepared
08:34in our hearts
08:35and entering with
08:36an awe and a reverence
08:37for God.
08:38Not hastily
08:38and not just because
08:40it's something you do
08:40on a Sunday.
08:41When we come
08:44into God's presence
08:45we enter with reverence
08:46trying to avoid
08:48all of those things
08:49that will distract us
08:50when we're worshiping God.
08:52And there are a lot
08:52of stuff that distracts us.
08:54We've got relationship issues,
08:56we've got things going on
08:57at work,
08:58we may have a health issue,
08:59we've got a lot of things
09:00that could distract us
09:01from worship.
09:02We want to avoid
09:03all of those distractions
09:04and sit around Him
09:05because worship
09:06is an above the sun experience
09:07said about God.
09:08Problems 4 says
09:11ponder the path
09:13of your feet
09:14then all your ways
09:15will be sure.
09:17Be careful
09:18how your feet
09:19walk into the temple
09:20into the presence.
09:21Now we don't go
09:21into the temple
09:22in Jerusalem
09:22we understand that
09:23but we do understand
09:23also we're told
09:24in the New Testament
09:25the corporate gathering
09:26of believers
09:27is also called a temple.
09:28The corporate gathering
09:29of believers
09:30coming together
09:30on any particular time
09:31when we worship together
09:32the Lord
09:32is a temple idea.
09:34We come into His presence
09:35with awe and reverence.
09:37We don't want to make
09:38worship meaningless.
09:40We want it to be valuable.
09:43The question is
09:44and I was posed
09:46as a young Christian
09:47this question is
09:48how are you going to get ready
09:51for a Sunday worship service?
09:55What are you going to do
09:56to make sure
09:57that that Sunday service
09:58is meaningful?
10:00Meaningful means
10:00I'm worshiping God
10:01and I'm receiving
10:02from His word
10:03and all those things
10:03that mean something
10:04in the worship.
10:05What are you going to do about it?
10:06I didn't know
10:07I was brand new Christian
10:08I wasn't sure
10:09how to answer that question
10:10I thought well
10:10maybe I'll get a good night's sleep
10:12that was a good answer
10:14but maybe I'm going to
10:16prepare my heart
10:17in other ways.
10:19I don't want to make
10:20just coming to church
10:21a habit
10:22just something I do
10:23without thinking
10:23I want it to be meaningful
10:24I want it to have
10:25a purpose behind it
10:26I want to be prepared
10:27I don't want to let
10:28the concerns of the week
10:29distract me
10:30as I come here
10:31not to forgive
10:32about the prayer
10:32but I want to bring God
10:33and say God
10:34this is where I'm at
10:35right now
10:35as I worship you
10:37I know that you're going
10:37to speak to my heart
10:38by your spirit
10:39you're giving wisdom
10:39and understanding
10:40and I can endure
10:41my week
10:42that I'm having right now
10:43I'm there.
10:46So how do you prepare
10:47to come to a worship service
10:49on Sunday?
10:50How do you prepare?
10:52Do you spend time
10:53Saturday evening
10:54thinking about
10:54the grace of God
10:56and the mercy of God
10:57and how much
10:57we need that?
11:00Do we focus on
11:01can we just rush around
11:02and do prayer
11:03if you're ready
11:03to close the head
11:04of time?
11:05When we come in
11:06we come in
11:07with a purpose
11:08and it's not just
11:09hastily entering
11:10into God's presence
11:11it's being prepared
11:12to hear from God
11:14to listen to what
11:16he's saying
11:16to obey him.
11:19The worship service
11:20is to glorify God
11:21and it does edify us
11:23helps us live out
11:24our life of faith
11:25throughout the week.
11:28Just because I'm
11:29a person who's
11:29regular in attendance
11:30doesn't mean that
11:31they're sincere in attendance.
11:33Sometimes people
11:34are just here
11:34because they have
11:36to be here
11:36but they need them.
11:38He wants us to be here
11:39because we want to be here.
11:41That we gather together
11:42to worship him
11:42because we want to do that.
11:44Not because we think
11:45we have to be
11:46but we want to be.
11:48So he gives us
11:49two principles
11:50that will help us
11:51prepare for worship.
11:52First of all
11:53is focus on the
11:54holiness of God.
11:55God is holy.
11:57He is otherworldly.
11:58In other words
11:58he's not like us.
11:59Someone once asked
12:00what is God like?
12:01And it was a trick question
12:02when it was a professor
12:03at the seminary.
12:04He asked his students
12:05what is God like?
12:06And some said
12:06well God is like this
12:07and God is like this
12:08and God is like that
12:09and the professor
12:09finally stopped him
12:10and said no.
12:11God is unlike any of that.
12:13He is other than we are.
12:15He is holy.
12:17And if the Shekinah glory
12:18of God was to descend
12:19upon this place
12:20right now
12:20and the sense
12:22of his utter holiness
12:23would enter here
12:24it would overwhelm us.
12:27We'd be on the ground.
12:27So the holiness of God
12:31and then the idea
12:32of submitting our lives
12:34to his authority.
12:36He is good.
12:37He is just.
12:38He knows what we need.
12:40He knows what is good for us.
12:42He works all things together
12:44for good to those
12:45who love me
12:46when I call
12:46according to his purpose.
12:47So the holiness of God
12:48I want to reflect on
12:49I'm also submitting my life.
12:51So in other words
12:51when I come into a service
12:52and I hear the word of God
12:53proclaim
12:54I'm bringing myself
12:55underneath the word of God
12:56and allowing it to shape my life.
12:59So holiness of God
13:00and submitting myself
13:01to the authority of God.
13:03Author Ken Blanchard
13:05talks about
13:05talked about this
13:07in essence.
13:08He says
13:08there is a difference
13:09between interest
13:10and commitment.
13:12When you're interested
13:13in doing something
13:14you do it only
13:15when it is convenient.
13:17When you're committed
13:18to something
13:18you accept no excuses
13:20only results.
13:22So the question is
13:23are we interested
13:24in worship services
13:25or are we committed
13:27to worship services?
13:30In other words
13:31am I committed to God
13:33who makes the center
13:33of my life
13:34or is it just
13:35I worship inconveniently
13:36and everything else
13:37flows around
13:38my desires
13:40instead of placing
13:41God in the center
13:41and let everything
13:42in my life
13:42focus around Him.
13:46He uses this phrase
13:47to draw near to listening.
13:50To draw near to listening
13:51and immediately
13:52the first thing
13:52we think about
13:53is the audible sound
13:54of someone speaking.
13:56To listen
13:56the audible sound
13:57of someone speaking
13:57but the word listen
13:58means much more than that.
14:00To draw near to listening
14:01implies a readiness
14:02to hear
14:03so that's part of it
14:04and an eagerness
14:06to hear and obey
14:08the word God.
14:10So to draw near to listening
14:11is more than just
14:12audibly hearing something
14:13it is I am ready
14:14to hear it
14:15I have placed myself
14:16in a position
14:17to hear it
14:17and secondly
14:18I want to do it.
14:20So that's this idea
14:21that's wrapped up
14:22in to draw near to listen
14:23means to hear
14:24and to obey
14:25is the idea
14:25of what he wants to say.
14:26James 1.19 says
14:27know this my beloved brothers
14:29let every person
14:30be quick to hear
14:31slow to speak
14:32and slow to anger.
14:34Listen
14:35hear
14:36desire
14:38obey
14:39He begins with
14:40an admonition
14:41that obedience
14:41is better than sacrifice.
14:43He said
14:43it would be better
14:44for you
14:44to draw near to listen
14:46in other words
14:46be ready to hear
14:47the word of God
14:47and obey it
14:48than to bring sacrifices
14:50when your heart's not in it.
14:52When your heart's not in this
14:53you just want to do it
14:54because it's the right thing to do
14:56but your heart's not in it.
14:59It's better to obey
15:00than to sacrifice.
15:01Hosea said this to us
15:02for I desire
15:03steadfast love
15:04and not sacrifice
15:06the knowledge of God
15:07rather than
15:08burn off of us.
15:10There's a perfect example
15:11in the Old Testament
15:11of one who should have
15:13listened and obeyed
15:14than do what he wanted
15:15and that is offering
15:16sacrifices
15:17King Saul.
15:19King Saul was given
15:19instructions to do
15:20a certain thing
15:21he didn't do it
15:22he thought he knew
15:23better than God
15:24so he did what he wanted
15:25to do
15:26and then comes back
15:27and says
15:27on 1 Samuel 15
15:28this word from Sam
15:30Has the Lord
15:31as great a delight
15:32in burnt offerings
15:33and sacrifices
15:34as in obeying
15:36the voice of the Lord?
15:37So which is better
15:38Saul?
15:39Is it a better debate
15:40or is it better
15:41to offer sacrifices?
15:42Sacrifices
15:43when pleasing to God?
15:44Yeah but only
15:45with a right heart.
15:47When we come to
15:48the right attitude
15:49Behold to obey
15:53is better than sacrifice
15:54and to listen
15:55than the fat of rams.
15:56He's teaching us
15:57the principle
15:58drawn here to listen
15:59be ready to hear
16:00be ready to obey
16:01submit yourself
16:02under the authority
16:03of God.
16:06We cannot separate
16:07true worship
16:08from the proclamation
16:09of God's word.
16:10That's why we're
16:11listening to God's word.
16:13We're prepared
16:14to hear it.
16:15We're ready
16:16to obey it.
16:17So you can't
16:18separate worship
16:19from God's word.
16:21Warren Worsley
16:22said well
16:22the worship of God
16:24is the highest
16:24ministry of the church
16:26and must come
16:27from devoted hearts
16:28and yielded wills.
16:30Again we would say
16:30evangelism is important.
16:32Absolutely.
16:32We're supposed to be doing it.
16:34Singing praises.
16:35Singing to each other
16:36in Psalms
16:36and him
16:37is the first law.
16:37Yes those are
16:38all right and good
16:39but the ultimate
16:40ministry of the church
16:41is worshiping
16:42our Savior.
16:44It's drawing attention
16:44to his goodness
16:45to his mercy
16:46to his grace
16:47and loving him
16:48with our whole hearts.
16:51When God's word
16:51is correctly
16:52exegetically proclaimed
16:54God is speaking
16:55to his people.
16:57Now I'm not talking
16:57about sermons
16:58that touch on a verse
16:59here and touch on
17:00a verse there
17:00and then the pastor
17:01talks for 40 minutes
17:03about wonderful things
17:05that have nothing
17:06to do with the text.
17:07That's not what I'm talking
17:07about.
17:08I'm talking about
17:09opening up God's word
17:09and letting God
17:10talk from his word.
17:11It's his word.
17:13Woe to the preacher
17:14who gets in the way
17:14of God's word.
17:15The best way
17:15is to let God talk
17:16and you stand behind
17:17what God is saying.
17:20Amen.
17:21It is better to listen
17:22that is to obey
17:23the word of God
17:24than to be actively
17:25involved in worship
17:27with a wrong heart
17:28and attitude.
17:28Are we ready?
17:29Are we prepared
17:30to enter into his presence?
17:33Jeremiah says this
17:34but this command
17:35I gave them
17:36obey my voice
17:37and I will be your God
17:38and you shall be
17:39my people
17:40and walk in all the ways
17:42that I command you
17:42that it may be well
17:44with you.
17:45Yes, be still
17:46and know that he is God.
17:50Puritan Thomas Watson
17:51put it this way.
17:52Many come to the word
17:54only to feast their ears.
17:56They like the melody
17:57of the voice.
17:59The malevolous
17:59that's a big word
18:01isn't it?
18:02Molybredous sweetness
18:03of the expression
18:04the newness
18:06of the notion
18:06this is to love
18:08the garnishing
18:08of the dish
18:09more than the food
18:10this is to desire
18:12to be pleased
18:13rather than edify.
18:16We come into his presence
18:17we expect him
18:19to show up
18:19we want to hear
18:20what he has to say
18:21we want to order
18:22our lives
18:23but we need that
18:23we are prepared
18:25to worship him.
18:26Only a fool
18:29thinks he can deceive God.
18:31In other words
18:32God knows our motivation
18:33he calls it
18:34a sacrifice of fools
18:36for those who don't
18:37hear and obey God's word
18:38but bring sacrifices
18:39he calls them
18:40the sacrifices of fools.
18:42You can't deceive God
18:43when you bring a sacrifice
18:44he knows exactly
18:45why you're bringing it
18:46if you're bringing it
18:47for the wrong reason
18:47he knows.
18:48You can't deceive him.
18:51Proverbs 15 says
18:52the sacrifice of the wicked
18:53is an abomination
18:54to the Lord.
18:55In other words
18:56the wicked is bringing
18:57a sacrifice to God
18:58but his heart is not in it
18:59he has nothing to do with God
19:01so what God said
19:02it's an abomination to him
19:03but the prayer
19:06of the upright
19:06is acceptable to him.
19:09So to attend
19:09the service of God
19:10with insincere formalism
19:13and ritualism
19:14is foolish
19:15Solomon says
19:16it is much more than that
19:19it is the right
19:20heart attitude
19:21towards God
19:22be prepared to hear
19:24being prepared
19:25to obey
19:26being prepared
19:28to submit
19:28to him
19:29it does not
19:32please God
19:33Jesus had some
19:34very harsh words
19:35for those people
19:35who were very formal
19:36and ritualistic
19:37but their heart
19:38is part of God
19:39this is what he said
19:40woe to you
19:42scribes and Pharisees
19:43hypocrites
19:44try saying that
19:47to a person
19:48who thinks they're religious
19:49and see what kind
19:49of reaction
19:50they're going to get
19:50same one
19:52Jesus
19:52God
19:53they didn't like
19:54what he had to say
19:54for you will like
19:56the whitewashed
19:57tunes
19:58which outwardly
19:59appear beautiful
19:59but within
20:00are full of
20:01dead people's
20:01bubbles
20:01and all uncleanness
20:02he knows our hearts
20:04and when we enter
20:05into his presence
20:06he is with prepared
20:07hearts
20:08thinking about
20:09his holiness
20:10and submitting
20:11to his authority
20:11Dietrich Kinder
20:13comments
20:14the reiterated
20:15word fool
20:16or fools
20:17is scathing
20:18for to be
20:20casual with God
20:21is an evil
20:22that's verse 1
20:23a sin
20:23verse 6
20:24and a provocation
20:25that will not
20:26go unpunished
20:27it's a serious thing
20:29when we enter
20:29into his presence
20:30so he's talking
20:33about not only
20:34entering into
20:35his presence
20:35with thanksgiving
20:36and praise
20:37but also the idea
20:38of prayer
20:39uttering
20:39our words
20:41to God
20:42in that sense
20:42but he's also
20:43talking about
20:43words in general
20:44as well
20:44but mostly
20:45about prayer
20:46so to restrain
20:47one's speech
20:48is a recurring
20:49theme
20:49in biblical
20:50wisdom literature
20:51is
20:51there's times
20:53we just need
20:54to keep our
20:54mouths closed
20:55Proverbs 21
20:57says this
20:57whoever keeps
20:58his mouth
20:59and his tongue
21:00keeps himself
21:01out of trouble
21:02I'm not going
21:03to ask you
21:03by a show of hands
21:04how many people
21:05have opened
21:05their mouth
21:06and gotten
21:06into trouble
21:06late for
21:07okay
21:08we do it
21:09so the
21:10definition is
21:11don't do that
21:12be careful
21:13weigh your
21:14words that
21:15come out
21:15of your mouth
21:15think about

22:01Matthew 6
22:03Jesus said
22:04this
22:04when you

22:22Jesus said
22:23it's your

22:33Spurgeon
22:33said
22:34it is not
22:35the length
22:35of our
22:36prayers
22:36but the
22:37strength
22:37of our
22:38prayers
22:38that makes
22:39the
22:39difference
22:39it's not
22:41about a

22:41words
22:42it's about
22:42the heart
22:43behind the
22:44words
22:44an example
22:47that I have
22:48myself
22:49falling into
22:49and I have
22:50to be very
22:50careful
22:51we
22:52wherever we're
22:53at
22:54home
22:54out
22:54doesn't

22:55we like
22:55to thank
22:55god
22:56for the
22:56food
22:56that we're
22:56going to
22:57eat
22:57we ask
22:57god
22:57to bless
22:58the food
22:58that we're

22:59I have
23:00found myself
23:00if I'm
23:01not careful
23:01just ending
23:02up with a
23:02rogue prayer
23:03of thanksgiving
23:03I say the
23:04same thing
23:05over our
23:05weekend
23:05and I
23:06would stop

23:08wants
23:08he doesn't
23:08want just
23:09rogue prayers
23:10he wants me
23:11actually to talk
23:12to him with words
23:12that are flowing
23:13out of my heart
23:14where I am
23:15at that moment
23:15so an example
23:17so an example
23:17of this type
23:18of praying
23:20he wrote

23:28oh lord
23:29I call

23:32give ear
23:33to my voice
23:34when I
23:34call
23:34to you
23:35let my
23:36prayer
23:36be counted
23:36as incense
23:37before you
23:38and the
23:39lifting up
23:39on my
23:40hands
23:40as the
23:41evening
23:41sacrifice
23:42I'm prepared
23:43when I
23:43hear into
23:44your presence
23:44I'm prepared
23:45when I
23:45speak to
23:46you
23:46I'm not
23:47just
23:47talking
23:48to hear

23:49John Bunyan
23:52said this
23:52when thou
23:53prayest
23:54rather let
23:54thy heart
23:55be without
23:56words
23:56than thy
23:57words
23:57without
23:58art
23:58that's
23:59what he's
23:59saying
23:59in his
24:02good lesson
24:03when he
24:03says
24:03here in
24:04verse 2
24:04he says
24:05be not

24:11let your

24:13be hasty
24:13to utter
24:14a word
24:15before God
24:16wait a second
24:17wouldn't you
24:18say words
24:18because he's
24:19talking about
24:19multiple
24:19too many
24:20words
24:20no he
24:21says
24:21a word
24:22be careful
24:24to utter
24:25a word
24:26before God
24:27there's a
24:27reason for
24:27that
24:28the singular
24:30word
24:31it's not
24:32words
24:32it's plural
24:33it's a singular
24:33word
24:34shows the
24:36seriousness
24:37of the
24:38warning
24:39every

24:41word
24:42that
24:43comes
24:43from
24:43your

24:44so he
24:45didn't
24:45say
24:45words
24:46he said
24:46be careful
24:47when you
24:48utter a

24:49before God
24:50every

24:52that you

24:53before God
24:53make sure
24:54you weigh
24:54it before
24:55you utter
24:55it
24:56Matthew 12
24:58verse told
24:59this
24:59I tell you

27:20he says
27:23the reason
27:23I want you
27:24to be
27:24careful
27:24with this
27:24is
27:25God
27:25is in
27:25heaven
27:26and you
27:26are on
27:26the earth
27:27he wants
27:27to show
27:28us the
27:28comparison
27:28of states
27:30the state
27:31that God
27:31is in
27:31his holiness
27:32his righteousness
27:33justice
27:33is in
27:34heaven
27:35and man
27:36on the
27:36earth
27:36two different
27:37states
27:37so he
27:39wants to
27:39he wants
27:40to say
27:40God
27:40is supreme
27:41and knows
27:41all things
27:42we don't
27:42know all
27:43things
27:43he does
27:44he's supreme
27:46in heaven
27:46and it
27:48cannot be
27:49manipulated
27:49we cannot
27:51try to
27:51bargain with
27:52God
27:52it's not
27:53going to
27:53work
27:53Psalm 115
27:54says this
27:55our God
27:56is in the
27:56heavens
27:56he does
27:57all that
27:57he pleases
27:58a person
28:01is never
28:01in the
28:02position of
28:02control
28:03in dealing
28:04with God
28:05we are
28:06never in
28:06control
28:07now we
28:08like to be
28:09in control
28:09but we are
28:10never in
28:11control
28:11in dealing
28:11with God
28:12we cannot
28:13bargain with
28:14God
28:14we can
28:14petition him
28:15we can
28:16request things
28:16with him
28:17but we
28:17can never
28:17demand
28:18petition
28:18he is
28:21in heaven
28:22we are
28:22on earth
28:23when we
28:24truly
28:25understand
28:25the vast
28:26distance
28:26between
28:27the holy
28:28otherworldly
28:29God
28:30and the
28:30defiled
28:31self-centered
28:32sinner
28:32we would
28:34be rendered
28:34specious
28:35true worship
28:39then according
28:40to Solomon
28:40true worship
28:41expanding it
28:42out to
28:42understanding
28:43of the
28:43new
28:43color
28:43true worship
28:45begins by
28:45realizing
28:46the gracious
28:47actions of
28:48God
28:48in bridging
28:49the vast
28:50gulf between
28:51himself and
28:52the worshiper
28:52through the
28:53merits of
28:54his son
28:54Jesus Christ
28:55our great
28:56high priest
28:56that is
28:57true worship
28:58we realize
28:59that God
29:00has bridged
29:00this vast
29:02gulf
29:02we as
29:03defiled
29:04sinners
29:04he is a
29:05holy God
29:05and he has
29:06forgiven us
29:07of our sins
29:07in Christ
29:08Christ has
29:09taken our
29:09sins upon
29:10himself
29:10and in him
29:11we have
29:12forgiveness
29:12of our sins
29:13he has
29:14bridged
29:14this
29:15vast
29:15gulf
29:16between
29:16himself
29:17and us
29:17the question
29:19is do you
29:19know him
29:20today
29:20do you
29:20know Jesus
29:21Christ
29:21as a
29:22savior
29:22has that
29:23gulf
29:23been
29:23that vast
29:24gulf
29:25been
29:25bridged
29:26for you
29:26through the
29:27work of
29:27the cross
29:28do you
29:28know him
29:29as savior
29:29did you
29:30know Jesus
29:30Christ
29:31have you
29:32been
29:32going
29:32again
29:33have you
29:34believed
29:35in him
29:35forgiveness
29:35of sins
29:36and eternal
29:37salvation
29:38so first
29:40Solomon warned
29:40us about
29:41guarding our
29:42feet
29:42guarding our
29:43mouth
29:44in the words
29:45we are saying
29:45to God
29:45now he wants
29:46us to guard
29:47our promises
29:48he wants us
29:49to guard
29:49our promises
29:50look at
29:51verses 4
29:51through 7
29:52when you
29:54vow a vow
29:55to God
29:56do not
29:57delay
29:57paying it
29:58for he has
29:59no pleasure
30:00in fools
30:00that's a person
30:01who doesn't
30:02pay their
30:02vows
30:02pay what
30:04you vow
30:04it is better
30:06that you
30:06should not
30:07vow
30:07than that
30:08you should
30:08vow
30:09and not
30:09pay
30:10let not
30:11your mouth
30:11lead you
30:12into sin
30:13and do not
30:14say before
30:15the messenger
30:15that it was
30:16a mistake
30:17oh I didn't
30:18really mean
30:18to do that
30:19I didn't
30:19really mean
30:19to vow
30:20that
30:20it was
30:20all a
30:20mistake
30:21why should
30:22God be
30:23angry at
30:24your voice
30:24your words
30:25and destroy
30:26the work
30:26of your hands
30:27for when
30:28dreams increase
30:29and works
30:30grow many
30:31then there
30:33is vanity
30:34but God
30:35is the one
30:36you must
30:37fear
30:37so now
30:37he wants
30:38us to
30:38guard our
30:38promise
30:38promise of
30:39me
30:39promise is
30:41kept
30:41vows in
30:43the old
30:43testament
30:44were always
30:45voluntary
30:46were always
30:47voluntary
30:47they were
30:48never
30:48commanded
30:48to do
30:49it
30:49but once
30:50you utter
30:51the vow
30:52it is
30:52binding
30:53upon you
30:53in other
30:54words there
30:55is no
30:55binding
30:55upon you
30:56until you
30:56actually
30:56utter the
30:57vow
30:57to God
30:57and once
30:58you make
30:58that vow
30:58to God
30:59that is
30:59now
31:00binding
31:00upon
31:01us
31:01the
31:02prescription
31:03is given
31:03Deuteronomy
31:0423
31:04if you
31:05make a
31:06vow to
31:06the Lord
31:07your God
31:07you shall
31:08not delay
31:09fulfilling it
31:10for the
31:10Lord your God
31:11will surely
31:12require it
31:12of you
31:13in other
31:13words if
31:13you promise
31:14something to
31:14God
31:14he's going
31:15to require
31:15you
31:16and you
31:17will be
31:17guilty
31:17of sin
31:18but if
31:19you refrain
31:19from
31:20vowing
31:20you will
31:21not be
31:21guilty
31:21of sin
31:21in other
31:22words no
31:22one is
31:22going to
31:22ask you
31:23to bow
31:23you can
31:23if you
31:24want to
31:24you don't
31:25have to
31:25if you
31:25want to
31:25but if
31:26you do
31:26it's fine
31:26you should
31:29be careful
31:29to do
31:31what has
31:31passed
31:32your lips
31:32for you
31:33have
31:33voluntarily
31:34bowed
31:34to the
31:34Lord
31:35your God
31:35what you
31:35have
31:35promised
31:36with your
31:36mouth
31:37so again
31:38they're
31:38voluntary
31:38once uttered
31:39they become
31:40binding
31:41vows were
31:44not a
31:44major part
31:45of the
31:45Israeli
31:46worship
31:46they were
31:46a part
31:47of it
31:47but they're
31:47not a
31:47major
31:47part
31:48you could
31:48bow
31:48to one
31:49and there
31:49were rules
31:50if you
31:50were married
31:51or unmarried
31:52and there
31:53are rules
31:55that you
31:55have to
31:55follow
31:55but again
31:56all
31:57volunteer
31:57all
31:58volunteer
31:58we have
32:01to be
32:01careful
32:01of making
32:02big promises
32:03to God
32:04today
32:04you know
32:05those foxhole
32:05promises
32:06those
32:07I'm in a
32:08lifeboat
32:08I'm gonna
32:09die
32:09promises
32:10those big
32:11promises
32:12we make
32:12today
32:12for God
32:13because we
32:13never know
32:13what the
32:14consequences
32:14of tomorrow
32:15is going to
32:15bring
32:15when it gets
32:17tomorrow
32:17and then all
32:18of a sudden
32:18we don't need
32:19that anymore
32:19and we forget
32:20the promise
32:20made to God
32:21God says
32:21don't promise
32:22better not to
32:23promise
32:24Matthew Henry
32:25said this
32:26a vow
32:26is a bond
32:27upon the soul
32:28a bond
32:30upon the soul
32:31Psalm 66
32:34I will come
32:35into your house
32:36with burnt
32:36offerings
32:37I will perform
32:38my vows
32:39to you
32:39that which my lips
32:41uttered and my mouth
32:42promised when I was
32:44in trouble
32:44this is the case of a person
32:45who was in trouble
32:46and in the trouble
32:48they made the vow
32:49and he says
32:50now I'm gonna fulfill
32:51what I promised you
32:52when I was in trouble
32:53because you go
32:53deliberately
32:54for my trouble
32:54I will keep
32:55my word to him
32:56that's what he's
32:57saying in the text
32:58now we don't really
33:00have those kind
33:01of vows today
33:01there's things
33:02on the Nazarite vow
33:03in the Old Testament
33:04there's all kinds
33:04of vows I couldn't
33:05make
33:05they're promises
33:06made
33:06so we don't have
33:07that understanding
33:08today pretty much
33:09we do understand
33:10things like marriage
33:11vows
33:11those are promises
33:13made
33:13promises made
33:14to God
33:15promises made
33:16to your spouse
33:16to the person
33:17that you're marrying
33:17that would be
33:18an understanding
33:19of a promise
33:19made
33:20marriage vows
33:21author and business
33:23leader Fred Smith
33:23writes about one
33:24of these most
33:25important memories
33:29that he had
33:29he calls it
33:30a treasured memory
33:31it was from a donut
33:32shop in Grand
33:34Saline Texas
33:35there was a young
33:37farm couple
33:37sitting at the table
33:38that was next to his
33:40he was wearing
33:41overalls and she
33:42had given him
33:43a dress
33:43after finishing
33:45their donuts
33:46he got up to pay
33:47the bill
33:47but he said
33:47I noticed
33:48she did not get up
33:49and go with him
33:50for a catch with him
33:51so after he picked
33:54the bill
33:54he came back
33:55and stood in front
33:55of her
33:56she put her arms
33:57around his neck
33:58and he lifted her up
33:59revealing that she
34:01was wearing
34:02a full body brace
34:03he lifted her
34:05out of her chair
34:06and back out
34:07the front door
34:08to the pickup truck
34:09while she was
34:09hanging onto his neck
34:10all the way back
34:11as he gently
34:13put her into the truck
34:14everyone in the shop
34:15watched
34:16no one said
34:18anything
34:18until a waitress
34:20from work
34:20almost reverently
34:21he took his
34:23vows seriously
34:24promises made to God
34:27a marriage vow
34:28is a promise
34:29made to God
34:29that's an example
34:30of it
34:31but fools
34:34seek to advance
34:35themselves before God
34:36with great promises
34:37and vows
34:38but with no intention
34:38of fulfilling them
34:39Proverbs 20
34:41says this
34:42it is a snare
34:43of the saint
34:44rationally
34:44it is holy
34:45now it is to you
34:46God
34:47and to reflect
34:48only after making
34:49the vow
34:49now it is
34:50I make a rash vow
34:51this is holy
34:52and I'm like
34:52oh wow
34:53I really like that
34:54I don't really think
34:54I want to give that
34:55to God
34:55I'm going to change
34:56my mind
34:57no no
34:57don't do that
34:58God says
34:58keep your promises
35:00fools are quick
35:02to make mouths
35:03but very slow
35:04to fulfill them
35:05what could be
35:06laziness
35:07it could be
35:07self absorption
35:08I'm not sure
35:09the reasons
35:09but they're quick
35:10to make them
35:11but very slow
35:12and fulfill them
35:13if at all
35:13their mouth
35:16is therefore
35:16leading them
35:17into sin
35:17Solomon says
35:18James 3
35:19it says this
35:19but no human
35:20being can
35:21contain the tongue
35:22it is a restless
35:23evil
35:24full of deadly
35:25poison
35:25weigh the words
35:27that come out
35:27of your mouth
35:28weigh the promises
35:29made to God
35:30fulfill them
35:31if we make them
35:32how many vows
35:35do we make to God
35:36promises that we
35:37make to God
35:37in the heat
35:38of the moment
35:38only then
35:40let us say
35:40well
35:41I didn't know
35:42I didn't know
35:43Melody Hartline
35:47relates in her
35:48Reader's Digest
35:48in September
35:49of 1996
35:50she was an
35:52employee
35:52at a jewelry
35:53school
35:53and when couples
35:55come in
35:55they get their
35:55wedding rings
35:56and sometimes
35:58they make
35:59engraving
36:00on the inside
36:00of their wedding
36:01van
36:01you know
36:01something special
36:02maybe the date
36:03of when you
36:04got married
36:04there's something
36:05special inside
36:05your wedding
36:06van
36:06so she was
36:07talking to
36:09this bride
36:10about what
36:12she wanted
36:12to engrave
36:13on her
36:13husband-to-be's
36:14wedding van
36:15so the bride
36:17says well
36:18we aren't
36:19very romantic
36:20and I'm thinking
36:21oh that's like
36:22a red flag right
36:23there you better
36:23fix that one
36:24before you get
36:24married
36:24you ought to
36:25be really
36:25romantic
36:26what's going
36:26on here
36:27anyway she
36:27said we're
36:28not really
36:28romantic
36:28and then she
36:30related that
36:30they were
36:31getting married
36:32on her
36:33husband's
36:34birthday
36:34so he
36:35wouldn't
36:35forget
36:36the
36:36anniversary
36:36okay there's
36:38another red
36:38flag right
36:39there okay
36:40rethink this
36:41marriage a
36:42little bit
36:42all right
36:43all right
36:43so she
36:44persisted
36:45melody the
36:45lady that
36:46worked at
36:46the jewish
36:47shop she
36:47persisted she
36:47said isn't
36:49there something
36:49that you
36:50wanted to
36:51remember as
36:51he looks
36:52inside of
36:53his reign
36:53she says
36:56there sure
36:56is and
36:57so that's
36:58how put
36:59it back
36:59on
37:00on the
37:01inside of
37:01his reign
37:02put it
37:04back on
37:04when we
37:09make a
37:09promise to
37:10god he
37:10must do
37:11everything in
37:11our ability
37:12to fulfill
37:13it or
37:14don't make
37:14the promise
37:15what's all
37:15want to say
37:16our promises
37:18to him are
37:18not mere
37:19empty words
37:20but our
37:20heart of
37:21love for a
37:22god who
37:22has redeemed
37:23us in
37:23christ
37:23the fool
37:26neglects
37:26vows made
37:27by saying
37:27ah it
37:29was an
37:29oversight
37:30i didn't
37:31really mean
37:32it i
37:32can't fulfill
37:33it and
37:34then the
37:34messenger
37:35comes and
37:35that word
37:36messenger is
37:36the same
37:37word as
37:37angel and
37:38other places
37:38in the bible
37:39but most
37:39likely it's
37:40talking about
37:41the temple
37:41messenger there
37:42was a person
37:43that was sent
37:43around to
37:44help to
37:44collect those
37:46things that
37:46people made
37:47vows about so
37:48they would go
37:48around and
37:48collect what
37:49was vowed to
37:50the temple
37:51so the temple
37:52messenger is
37:52probably the
37:53messenger we're
37:53talking about
37:54right here
37:54to claim that
37:56it was a
37:56mistake that
37:57the fool
37:57does it
37:58was dishonest
37:59they didn't
38:00intend to
38:00fulfill the
38:01vow
38:01they just
38:02said it
38:03to either
38:03make themselves
38:04look good
38:04or in the
38:05heat of the
38:05moment said
38:06something that
38:06they didn't
38:07really mean
38:07but god hears
38:09what we say
38:10he hears
38:10everything
38:11and we need
38:12to make sure
38:12that the speech
38:13that comes out
38:13of our mouth
38:14is straightforward
38:15speech
38:15without calling
38:17on god as a
38:18vow or as
38:19an oath
38:20to authenticate
38:22what we're
38:22saying
38:22I try very
38:24hard not to
38:24start a
38:25sentence with
38:25honestly
38:26because then
38:27I don't
38:27always talk
38:29honestly
38:29I have to
38:30be very
38:31happy
38:31you don't
38:32want to
38:32say something
38:33I hate
38:33starting a
38:34sentence like
38:34that
38:34I want to
38:36make sure
38:36that when
38:37people hear
38:37me talk
38:38that I
38:39don't have
38:39to put
38:39an oath
38:40on top of
38:40this
38:40I swear
38:41to god
38:41this is
38:41true
38:42you can
38:43trust me
38:44this is
38:44true
38:45I don't
38:45want to
38:45say any
38:46of those
38:46things
38:46I just
38:47want the
38:47words that
38:47come out
38:47of my
38:48mouth
38:48to be
38:48authentic
38:49to be
38:50words of
38:50integrity
38:50Jesus said
38:53this
38:54again you
38:55have heard
38:55that it
38:55was said
38:56to those
38:56of old
38:56you shall
38:57not swear
38:57falsely
38:58but shall
38:59perform to
39:00the Lord
39:00what you
39:00have sworn
39:01the vow
39:01you have
39:02made
39:02the oath
39:02you have
39:03said
39:03but I
39:03say to
39:04you
39:04do not
39:05take an
39:05oath at
39:05all
39:06either by
39:06heaven
39:07for it is
39:07the sword of
39:08God
39:08or by the
39:08earth
39:08for it is
39:09a footstool
39:10or by Jerusalem
39:10or the city
39:11of the great
39:12king
39:12and do not
39:13take an
39:14oath by
39:14your head
39:15for you
39:15cannot make
39:16one hair
39:17white or black
39:18let what you
39:19say be
39:19simply
39:20yes or
39:21no
39:21anything more
39:23than that
39:23comes from
39:23evil
39:24in other
39:24words
39:24we don't
39:26need lots
39:26of words
39:27just
39:27to speak
39:29and our
39:30words
39:30our actions
39:31back up
39:32what we're
39:33saying
39:33because of a
39:36rash vow
39:37a person
39:37could lose
39:38all the fruit
39:39of their
39:39hands
39:39did you notice
39:40in the text
39:40why should
39:41you want
39:42to risk
39:42that
39:42why should
39:43you want
39:43to risk
39:44it
39:44by making
39:44a promise
39:45to God
39:45and keeping
39:45the promise
39:46it says
39:47that God
39:47will destroy
39:48it works
39:48on your
39:48hands
39:49why would
39:50you want
39:50to risk
39:50that
39:51because it's
39:51not healthy
39:52God
39:55takes no
39:56pleasure
39:56in fools
39:57and I know
39:58that sounds
39:59a bit harsh
39:59but again
40:01a foolish
40:01person is
40:02only one
40:03who lives
40:03under the sun
40:04under the sun
40:06is transient
40:07under the sun
40:07is temporary
40:08under the sun
40:09is fleeting
40:10it is not
40:11lasting
40:11that's a foolish
40:13person
40:13but a person
40:14who lives
40:15above the sun
40:16in the permanent
40:17in the eternal
40:18in the presence
40:19of God
40:20that is a wise
40:20person
40:21God takes
40:22no pleasure
40:22in fools
40:23doesn't please
40:24him to call
40:25someone a fool
40:25we can see
40:26the word used
40:27here in the text
40:27at the heart
40:30of a person's
40:31religious attitude
40:32ought to be
40:33the fear of God
40:34that's what
40:34all of which
40:34things
40:35his holdings
40:36my submission
40:38to him
40:39all of this
40:39rests in the
40:40heart of a person
40:41that comes
40:41into God's
40:42presence
40:42with thanksgiving
40:44and praise
40:45Proverbs
40:46says this
40:47the fear of the Lord
40:47is the hatred
40:48of evil
40:49pride and arrogance
40:50and the weight
40:50of evil
40:51and perverted speech
40:52I hate
40:53I want to keep
40:54my promises
40:55to you
40:56I want to weigh
40:56my words
40:57I want to guard
40:58my feet
40:58I want to guard
40:59my mouth
40:59I want to guard
41:00my prayers
41:01I want to make
41:02sure I come
41:03to his presence
41:03with an attitude
41:04of a heart
41:05of integrity
41:06that's full of
41:07love and devotion
41:08to my Savior
41:09that's just because
41:10I have to come
41:11to church
41:11James Smith
41:13said this
41:14a God-fearing
41:15person performs
41:17vows
41:17relies on
41:19written revelation
41:20rather than dreams
41:21and worships God
41:22from the heart
41:23in humble submission
41:24that really sums up
41:25the 37 verses
41:26right here
41:26that's exactly
41:27what Solomon's
41:27talking about
41:28comes back
41:30to the overriding
41:31thought
41:32God must be
41:33held in awe
41:34by entering
41:35his presence
41:36with reverence
41:37worshiping him
41:39in integrity
41:39and keeping
41:41promises made
41:43let's pray
41:43Father
41:44we thank you
41:44for these words
41:46of encouragement
41:46and admonition
41:47to make sure
41:49that we're in
41:50the right spot
41:51when we enter
41:51into your presence
41:52that our heart
41:54is centered
41:55on you
41:56that we reflect
41:57on your holiness
41:58and submit
41:59to your authority
42:00in our lives
42:01that we're careful
42:02with the words
42:03that come out
42:03of our mouth
42:04not just in prayer
42:05but when we talk
42:05to other people
42:06as well
42:07in every promise
42:08that we make
42:09to you
42:09we want to be
42:10quick in fulfilling
42:11it
42:11oh Father
42:12we don't want
42:13to just say
42:13stuff to get
42:14out of trouble
42:15and then not do it
42:16we truly want
42:17to mean what
42:18we say to you
42:18so guard our lips
42:20as the psalmist says
42:22guard our hearts
42:24may you align them
42:26to your will
42:27as we walk
42:27in this world
42:28yes we are
42:29under the sun
42:30in human existence
42:31but our life
42:32is centered in you
42:33who is above the sun
42:35we pray in Jesus name
42:36Amen
