00:00You may have noticed that yesterday was Passover, if you were following the calendar to Jewish
00:05Passover was yesterday. It actually took place at 7 44 p.m. Jerusalem time yesterday, and it would
00:11have been a full moon. The 15th of Nisan, the middle of the month, would have been a full moon.
00:15So the full moon was probably very close to being full, if not full, the night that we saw Jesus in
00:21the Garden of Gethsemane as well. If there were no clouds blocking that moon, it would have been
00:25nearly a full moon. On the 14th going into the 15th of Nisan, it would have been a full moon.
00:31So here he is in the garden with a full moon, and we saw about that last time. We saw the last Adam,
00:36the second Adam in the garden, where the first Adam turned the garden into a desert. The second
00:41brought us to Gethsemane. The second Adam in the faithfulness to his father brings us out of the
00:47desert and into really the streets of glory. As Teresa was talking about, he wants to dwell with
00:53his people forever. And I mean, think about that, where sin is no longer an issue with us
00:58in his presence. And we get to learn about, I think learning about God forever is going to take
01:04us forever to learn about him. He's just so big. We can't wrap our minds around how big he is.
01:11So the day that Jesus, we moved from the Garden of Gethsemane, it was that moving into the day is
01:18called the day of the preparation for the Passover. And the one who said, not my will be done, but yours
01:25now has transformed the Garden of Gethsemane, that desert into a kingdom, and brings man from
01:36Gethsemane to the very gates of glory. We saw him suffer last week in the garden.
01:42Shortly after that event, just nearly few minutes following, he sees the torches coming down from
01:52Jerusalem through the Kidron Valley up the western side of the Mount of Olives, and he knows that his
01:58betrayer is coming to arrest him. And here's Judas, one of the 12, who spent time with him, actually went
02:06out and ministered and preached to other people. Here he comes and he walks up to the mountain,
02:12master, and he kisses him. That which should have been a instrument of intimacy, Jesus says,
02:23oh, Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss? He's gathered up and taken into first
02:32Annas, who was, it's a really weird scenario with almost a dual high priest going on, Annas
02:38and Caiaphas at the same time. It's a really weird thing, but Annas goes to first. He goes and he's
02:43interviewed by Annas, and then he goes and he's interviewed by Caiaphas, who's listed as the high
02:48priest in Caiaphas' house. And then Caiaphas brings them to the Sanhedrin, to the council, and they're
02:54sitting before the Sanhedrin, and they say, this man must die. So they have no power over death, so they're
03:02going to take him to the governor Pilate to make sure that that death sentence is carried out on
03:07him. So now they bring him to Pilate. And the king of kings stands before a human governor who carries
03:15out the predetermined plan of God. The scene is shifted from the Sanhedrin to the headquarters of
03:25Pilate, who is the Roman governor at the time. So here, now the gospel, all four of the gospels have
03:32this event in it, but each of them lists different things. Not one lists all of them chronologically
03:38what took place. So I will try to bring in what takes place. He's before Herod, he's before Pilate,
03:43he's before Herod, he's before... I'll try to let us know where we're at in the storyline. John doesn't
03:47tell us all of that. So I'll kind of fill in the blanks. He bounces around a lot in this few hours here.
03:54First, he's before Pilate. The council brings him there. If you have your Bibles, open up to John
03:59chapter 18. We'll start reading in verse 33. So turn on your biblical device, open up your Bible. I want
04:05you to be able to see that this is God's word and we want to read it together. So before Pilate, the
04:11first time on what's known as a day of preparation, moving into this ancient ceremony of Passover.
04:17Verse 33. So Pilate entered his headquarters. He entered his headquarters again and called
04:25Jesus and said to him. So the council had said something to him. Jesus is inside. So he goes
04:30back inside the headquarters and he's talking to Jesus. Are you the king of the Jews? And Jesus
04:36answered, do you say this of your own accord or is the spirit saying something to you right
04:40now? Is the spirit drawing to you or did others tell you about this about me? Pilate answered,
04:47am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have
04:53you done? He wants to know what's going on. And Jesus answered, my kingdom is not of this
05:00world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting that I might
05:05not be delivered over to the Jews, but my kingdom is not from the world. Then Pilate said
05:11to him, so you are a king. And Jesus answered, you say that I am a king. He's basically saying,
05:17yes, I am a king. You say that I am a king for this purpose. I was born. And for this purpose,
05:22I have come into the world to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens
05:29to my voice. In other words, he's given almost an invitation to Pilate. Are you listening to
05:32my voice? Pilate here. Pilate said to him, what is truth? After he had said this, he went back
05:40outside to the Jews and told them, I find no guilt in him. Now there's actually a break here,
05:46but we're not going to break the text. We'll read the text, but there's actually a break right here.
05:49But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to
05:54release for you, to you, the king of the Jews? And they cried out again, no, not this man, not this man,
06:02but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber. We're also told he was a murderer, an insurrectionist,
06:10part of a rebellion against Rome. Do you want Jesus or do you want this guy? How could you
06:15possibly choose this guy over Jesus? He's trying to give them an out is what he's trying to do.
06:22In all four of the gospels who record this event right here, all the first words of Pilate are the
06:26question, are you the king of the Jews? The very first words coming out of his mouth and
06:30questioning Jesus, are you the king of the Jews? That's the first thing he wants to know.
06:34Because the people have spoken things and he doesn't know what's going on. He's the one that's
06:38got to pass judgment on him. He's got to make sure he does it right because Rome is really big on
06:42justice. If you do it wrong, Rome wouldn't like that. He's got to figure out what's going on.
06:47So are you the king of the Jews? And you kind of, well, why would he ask that question? Well,
06:51John doesn't tell us why he would ask that question, but Luke does. In Luke 23, this is why
06:56Pilate asked the question. Then the whole company of them arose, that's the counts,
07:00the Sanhedrin, and brought him, that's Jesus, before Pilate. And they began to accuse him saying,
07:07we found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar and
07:12saying that he himself is Christ, a king. That's why he asked the question. Luke tells us John doesn't
07:18because they came and said, yeah, he claims that he's a king. So the very first question to ask is,
07:22are you really a king, Jesus? Are you a king? He only understands this in political terms. He's not
07:28thinking of a religious kingdom. He's thinking of a kingdom that could rival Rome, which could be a
07:32problem. Are you a king? He doesn't like the way that the Jews are answering these questions that
07:39he's given them. They're kind of very elusive. He can tell that they have something behind the
07:43questions that they're asking. They already have a predetermined plan in their mind what they want
07:47done with this man. But he's annoyed at them because they're not really playing along with,
07:52they're just making his life difficult right now. And then Pilate asks the question, am I a Jew?
08:01You can almost hear the disdain in his voice. The Jews were not known as being very, very,
08:06they tend to be very arrogant, self-centered, stubborn, and stiff-necked people. Wait,
08:13I think that's what God said about them. Actually, it's kind of what he says about us too, isn't it?
08:17So they weren't well-liked. And he goes, am I a Jew? Come on, really? Am I a Jew? You can hear the
08:24disdain in that. And as we're going through here, you'll probably notice the phrase delivered over.
08:29We didn't see Judas. Judas betrayed him. That word is delivered over. And then we see that the Jewish
08:35religious leader, deliver over Jesus. Same word again. And then later Pilate's going to deliver
08:40over Jesus. All the same word. So it's kind of the thread that flows through this text is deliver over,
08:45deliver over, deliver over. So he wanted to know, Jesus, did he really do, did he really do a crime
08:52that's worthy of the punishment of Rome? What's going on? So he's trying to interrogate him. He
08:56wants to know what's going on. Should he be punished? Should he not? Or did he just break some religious
09:00tradition? So the Jews were speaking about the kingdom of heaven. He's a king. He claims to be a
09:06king. And when they say the kingdom of heaven, the Jews mean God is king. So in their mind, they're
09:12saying he claimed to be God. John eight before Abraham was, I am. He claimed to be before the
09:18existence of Abraham that he existed. He claimed to be a king. God is king. We can't have this man
09:23is what the Jew is saying. But Jesus confirms Pilate's question. I am a king. Yes. But my
09:30kingdom is not of this world. It's not from this world. His kingdom is not of this world or from it,
09:37but it doesn't mean that it doesn't have influence in this world. If you're born again
09:41today, you are born again to the kingdom of God. We are told you are part of the kingdom
09:44of God and living out kingdom ethics day by day changes a society. So not only does it
09:51not, it's not from this world, but it certainly has influence in this world, the kingdom of
09:55heaven. Jesus says, for this reason I was born and for this reason I came into the
10:03world. Well, why did he say it like that? Two times. I mean, once would have been sufficient
10:06for this reason I was born. No, think about it. For this reason I was born, God enters
10:11into humanity in the incarnation. And for this reason I came into the world, showing
10:17us his preexistence. So we see his humanity and his preexistence in this state, his
10:22Godhead and his humanity in this phrase, I was born and I came into the world. Jesus
10:29came into the world to bear witness to the truth of God's sovereign rule, the kingdom
10:33of God. And to reveal it to the world in word and in deed and in action. As he was going
10:40around, he was talking about all of these things about the kingdom of God and he was
10:44showing them what the kingdom of God was going to be like. You know, we think of kingdom
10:49as a territory, you know, like a landmass, a kingdom. But it's more, it's not that.
10:53It's different than that. It's not that type of kingdom. It has more of the idea of a sovereign
10:57rule, a ruler, a sovereignty is the idea in this kingdom. His kingly activity in this
11:04world. George Bazley Murray wrote, the fundamental concept of the kingdom of God in the Bible
11:11is that it denotes God's coming to this world to bring judgment and salvation to humankind.
11:17When the gospels depict Jesus powerfully active among people, delivering them from Satan's thrall
11:22and bringing to them the blessings of God's beneficent rule, they purpose to describe the
11:28kingdom of God in action in this world. That's what he's talking about. His sovereign rule,
11:32his kingdom. He is the king of kings and the Lord of lords. And when he talks about truth,
11:38truth is more than just intellectual assent to certain facts. It's more than that. It's more
11:43a life oriented integrity, a life filled with integrity, guided by integrity, truth in the
11:50innermost being. And I don't know, you know, pastors over the years have kind of tried to give
11:58an emphasis with when he says, what is truth? I don't know how he said it. I mean, there's no
12:04parentheses. Oh, he said it with this. We don't know how he said it. He could have said it in two
12:09ways. I mean, he really could have said it like, uh, what is truth as a sneer?
12:20What is truth? Or he could have said it because here's a man that, that was in the higher ranks
12:26of the Roman empire that was around politicians. Politicians sometimes aren't known necessary for
12:33their truthfulness or a life full of integrity. Even in those days, he could have said it with a
12:40sigh. In other words, I've never seen truth in my life before. All I've seen is deceit, lies,
12:45treachery, and rebellion. I've never seen truth. He could have said it with a sneer or he could have
12:49said it with a sigh. Oh, what is truth? We don't know. We don't know. So before the issue
12:59with Barabbas, I told you there's a break right there. Pilate sends him over to Herod for Herod
13:04to do an interview with him. Herod interviews with him and says, man, I find, although Jesus
13:09didn't say anything to him, I don't find any fault with this guy. Sends him back to Pilate.
13:12So now he goes to Herod and he comes back to Pilate for a second time. And Pilate's going,
13:19I find no guilt in this man. I find nothing worthy of any kind of punishment for this man.
13:23In fact, he says it three times. I don't find this guy guilty at all. He said, what are you
13:28trying to say here? And he's trying to give the religious leaders a way to save face by
13:33offering them Jesus or Barabbas. And he's thinking in his mind, they're never going to select
13:38Barabbas. There's no way. That guy is wicked. He is, I mean, even for a Roman, he's not a
13:43good guy. This guy's bad. I'll give him an out. And he can, they can choose Jesus, but
13:48they don't want Jesus, do they? They want the murderer. They want the rebel. They want
13:53the one who had insurrection. He was a murderer. He was guilty of, of, of, of, in fact, Mark
14:00tells us, and among the rebels in prison who had committed murder in the insurrection, there
14:06was a man called Barabbas. How could they possibly want this guy? Seriously, he's
14:11given them an out. Take, take, take Jesus over Barabbas. And they said, no, we don't
14:15want Jesus. We don't want Barabbas. We want Jesus. So failing to have Jesus released
14:23through this amnesty custom that he had, Pilate seeks to have Jesus released another
14:29way. Again, he's trying to get him released. He finds no guilt in him. Luke 23 tells us
14:35exactly what, what, what Pilate wanted to do. I will therefore punish and release
14:40him. That's what he wants to do. He simply wants to punish him. And in the
14:44punishment that would be sufficient for the Jews, they'll say, okay, let him go.
14:47That's his, that's his plan. But look what happens. Look at chapter 19, verse 1. He's
14:53now before the soldiers. Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. One, two, three, four,
15:01five, six, seven words. And in those seven words is an enormous amount of pain.
15:08And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed
15:14him in a purple robe. They came up to him saying, hail, king of the Jews. And you know
15:19they said that with reverence, right? Yeah, right. Hail, king of the Jews. And struck him
15:25with their hands. Pilate went out again and said to them. So he's now back before
15:30Pilate. See, I'm bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in
15:35him. He says it again. So Jesus came out. Now picture, he came out wearing the crown
15:41of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, behold the man. When the chief
15:48priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, crucify him, crucify him. And Pilate, Pilate
15:56said to them, take him yourselves and crucify him for I find no guilt in him. Again, nothing.
16:02The Jews answered him, we have a law and according to that law, he ought to die because he's made
16:08himself the son of God. Ooh, pause. That got Pilate's attention right there. Whoa, son of
16:13God. When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. He entered his headquarters
16:21again and said to Jesus, where are you from? But Jesus gave him no answer at this point.
16:27He's not answering, where are you from? He could have said, I'm from heaven. He didn't
16:30say that. He didn't answer him. So Pilate said to him, you will not speak to me? Do you not
16:39know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you? And Jesus answered
16:44him, you would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above.
16:50Therefore, he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin. So seeking to release him,
16:57he has him beaten. He has him flogged. He has him scourged is the idea. The flogging was
17:03to be an alternative to crucifixion, not an accompaniment to it. We kind of get in our
17:10minds, oh, he's going to flog him and then crucify him. No, his goal was to flog him and
17:13have him released. That was his goal. So it wasn't to accompany salvation. It was to be an
17:18alternative to the crucifixion. Flogging. Oh, the instrument of the floggers, the scourgers,
17:27the torturers, as I said. Benzer describes the flogging, this instrument. The delinquent
17:36was stripped, bound to a post or a pillar, or sometimes simply thrown on the ground and
17:41beaten by a number of torturers until the latter grew tired and the flesh of the delinquent
17:46hung in bleeding shreds. In the provinces, this was a task of soldiers. Three different
17:53kinds of implements were customary. Rods were used on free men. Military punishments were
17:59inflicted with sticks. But for the slaves, scourges or whips were used. The leather thongs
18:05of those being often fitted with a spike or with several pieces of bone or lead joined to
18:10form a chain. The scourging of Jesus was carried out with this last name instrument. Something
18:15along those lines right there. It's not surprising to hear that delinquents frequently collapsed and
18:24died under this procedure, which only in exceptional cases was prescribed as a death sentence. If you've
18:31ever seen the passion of the Christ, they did a pretty good job of showing us what it could have
18:35looked like. Every time I see that, I cannot, cannot help but weeping. The torture that was
18:45given to his body on that day. The prophet Isaiah told us this would happen. I gave my back to those
18:52who strike and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard. I hid not my face from disgrace and
18:58spitting. So they flogged him and then they took a crown of thorns and placed it upon his head. Maybe
19:05something along that as you can see up there, the crown of thorns from a date palm tree. You can see how
19:10thick those thorns are. They would stand up almost like a halo around his head as they put it upon his
19:17head and then they beat his head with the stick, impaling his head with it. You ever had a head wound
19:22before? Scratch on the top of your head? It bleeds like crazy, doesn't it?
19:30As Jack mentioned, he's absolutely right. Sin had brought thorns and thistles into the world.
19:36How appropriate that the creator, the son of God, wear a crown of thorns as he took upon him the sin of
19:44the world. Genesis, we read about this. And to Adam, he said, because you have listened to the voice of
19:55your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, you shall not eat of it. Cursed is the
20:01ground because of you. In pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life. Thorns and thistles it
20:08shall bring forth for you and shall eat the plants of the field. How appropriate that the creator of
20:14the world would wear a crown of thorns for sin brought thorns into the world. And the very metal
20:22he created and placed in the ground was used to make the nails that pierced his hands and his feet.
20:30These soldiers mocked him with this, oh, hail, king of the Jews. They should have given him a kiss of
20:40homage like you would give to an emperor. No, instead they spit in his face and beat him.
20:47The idea in the text is that they struck him over and over again. That's the verb tense that's used.
20:53It happened not just one time, like it's over and over and over. We're told that one of the other
20:58gospels, up to 600 people, a whole cohort was present at this time. I don't know if all 600
21:03people beat on him, but a lot of people were there that day and they kept hitting him and they took
21:10that rod and they beat him on the head with it. Matthew tells us, and they spit on him and took the
21:15reed and struck him on the head. Oh, what man is doing to the savior, to the creator of all,
21:23to God of the universe. Here man is acting, but I think we need to take a time out. I think we need
21:31to just back up for a second. Yes, man is acting. Yes, we must pause here though and understand that
21:38this is God's predetermined plan that's being carried out. Yes, man is involved, but it's the plan
21:46of the father so that we would have salvation. Acts 2, this Jesus delivered up according to the
21:55definite plan and foreknowledge of God. You, that's speaking to the Jews, you crucified and killed by
22:01the hands of lawless men. Those are the Gentiles. Who's guilty of the death of Christ? Jews and Gentiles.
22:08What means all of us are guilty of the death of Christ. We can't blame the Jews for killing Jesus.
22:13We're just as guilty because it was our sin that he bore on his body. He was the sin bearer for us.
22:22Can you imagine him coming back from the floggers with the crown of thorn, the purple robe on?
22:27Could you imagine what that looked like? It breaks my heart to think what it would have looked like.
22:34Here he is standing, flogged, bleeding profusely, flesh torn. Some of them have been so aggressive that
22:43the entrails open up on some of the ones that they have flogged before. That's how brutal it is.
22:51Bruised faith, dressed in clothes of mockery, making him more of a clown than a king.
22:57He's standing there. And Pilate says, behold the man. And we would respond back, behold the man of sorrows.
23:07The prophet Isaiah said, he was despised and rejected by men. A man of sorrows. Acquainted with grief.
23:19Acquainted with pain. Acquainted with suffering. And as one from whom men hid, hide their faces.
23:26He was despised. And we esteemed him not. We didn't care about him at all.
23:30Pilate's getting angry at the Jews. The refusal to let this guy go. He's getting a little bit annoyed at them.
23:42He says, they said to him, well, he claimed to be the son of God. Now for a pagan who doesn't have a monotheistic
23:50outlook on life, there are lots of different gods. Small g gods. Some of them even in history have said
23:56to come down to earth at times and do things. Could you imagine if you're mistreating a son of God
24:02that maybe then later he may have vengeance on you for mistreating him?
24:07And don't forget when Pilate's wife said to him, don't have anything to do with this righteous man.
24:12I've suffered in a dream because of him. So along with the dream and this idea of him being the son of God,
24:17the text tells us that he's afraid. He's scared.
24:20Makes perfect sense.
24:25The claim that Jesus was the son of God sees Pilate with a sudden fear.
24:29The fear of a person who understands that a divine being could enact
24:33vengeance on the person who mistreated him.
24:35So he's afraid.
24:38And then it shifts like that. Fear leaves.
24:42Pilate's now annoyed at Jesus because Jesus won't answer his questions.
24:46Jesus knows there is a greater authority than Pilate and Rome.
24:53All authority flows from almighty God.
24:56In other words, you would have no authority if the father didn't grant it to you.
25:01And yes, there's one that's going to be have a greater sin than you.
25:04Yes, but the authority is God's has been delivered to you to carry out his predetermined plan
25:10for the salvation of all who will believe.
25:13Who's this one that he says, he says, therefore, he who delivered me over to you has a greater sin.
25:24Immediately, our mind rushes to Judas, right?
25:26In the garden when he kissed him.
25:27Our mind would rush to, maybe it was Judas, the one who delivered over.
25:30And no, I don't think so.
25:32It wasn't that.
25:34It was Caiaphas, the high priest that Jesus is talking about.
25:39It's Caiaphas, the high priest.
25:41In Mark 14, we have a record of what Caiaphas is saying here.
25:45But he remained silent, Jesus, and made no answer.
25:48Again, the high priest asked him, are you the Christ, the son of the blessed?
25:52And Jesus said, I am.
25:55And you will see the son of man seated at the right hand of power and coming with the clouds of heaven.
26:00And the high priest tore his garments, which was actually forbidden by the law to do that.
26:04He's not allowed to do that.
26:05He does it anyway.
26:06And said, what further witnesses do we need?
26:09You have heard this blasphemy.
26:11What is your decision?
26:12And they all condemned him as deserving death.
26:15Think about this.
26:17The high priest of Israel.
26:19The one who was supposed to represent Israel to God.
26:22The one who once a year on the day of atonement took blood behind the curtain to the most holy place
26:27to offer atonement for the children of Israel.
26:30The one who was supposed to be the closest to God.
26:34Says, kill him.
26:36We don't want him.
26:42Three times Pilate says, he's not guilty.
26:45Why would he continue this first trial then?
26:48He knows he's not guilty.
26:50So he's still trying to seek a way to release Jesus.
26:55Now we see him before the nation.
26:58Look at verse 12 down to the first part of verse 16.
27:02From then on, Pilate sought to release him.
27:04Again, he's trying to get him released.
27:08But the Jews cried out, if you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend.
27:13That certainly got his attention.
27:15Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.
27:18So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat
27:23at a place called the stone pavement.
27:26And in Aramaic, Gabbatha.
27:29Now it was the day of preparation of the Passover.
27:32It was about the sixth hour.
27:33About the sixth hour.
27:34Not exactly, but about the sixth hour.
27:37He said to the Jews, behold your king.
27:40And they cried out, away with him.
27:42Away with him.
27:43Crucify him.
27:45And Pilate said to them, shall I crucify your king?
27:47King, the chief priests, the religious leaders of Israel, those who should lead people to God
27:54said, we have no king but Caesar.
27:59So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.
28:04He's now standing before his nation.
28:08And John tells us about the beginning of the gospel of John.
28:11He came to his own and his own people did not receive him.
28:16His own.
28:19Pilate certainly is afraid of the emperor.
28:21Tiberius was not known to be a generous man, especially if you were a threat to his authority.
28:26The trial is quickly coming to an end.
28:31We are told it's the day of the preparation of the Passover.
28:35And a lot of things happen on this day.
28:36If you remember correctly, the Old Testament and the Passover, you had to remove all of
28:40the leaven out of your house.
28:42No leaven could be in your house.
28:43So in the preparation day, the first thing it is, you removed all of the leaven out of
28:46your house, took it out and burned it.
28:48Work ceased for that day.
28:50And at this time also, the slaughtering of the Passover lambs begin.
28:54Again, the Passover festival now is in full motion.
29:00Do you remember what the Passover is?
29:01The Passover is a celebration of Israel's deliverance from the bondage of slavery in Egypt by God's
29:07almighty power.
29:08It was a time that God showed himself as king and they became his people.
29:14That ancient ceremony where God delivered them from the bondage of Egypt.
29:19Exodus 12, then Moses called all the elders of Israel and said to them,
29:23go and select lambs for yourselves according to your clans and kill the Passover lamb.
29:29For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians.
29:32And when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over
29:36the door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you.
29:40So that first Passover where they took the blood and put it on the lintels of the door and the
29:45death angel passed over the house that had the blood on it and the firstborn didn't die there.
29:49That's the first exodus.
29:52In a sense, this Passover that they're going to celebrate right now, this Passover is a second
29:57exodus.
29:58What do you mean?
30:00A second exodus in which God will accomplish a deliverance for all nations, giving those who
30:06believe life in the promised land of his eternal kingdom.
30:09It's like a second exodus, a second picture.
30:14So to preserve himself, Pilate gives in.
30:17He caves to the request of the other religious leaders.
30:21Fine.
30:22Fine.
30:25Matthew says that he washed his hands.
30:27Didn't cleanse his heart, but he washed his hands of the whole event.
30:30Matthew 27.
30:31So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took
30:37water and washed his hands before the crowd saying, I am innocent of this man's blood.
30:42See to it yourselves.
30:44I'm innocent.
30:45Didn't cleanse his heart though, did he?
30:50Instead of issuing a death sentence on Jesus up to this point before he delivers him over
30:54at the last 16, he says, behold your king.
30:57He affirms the kingship of Jesus.
31:00Behold your king.
31:02Here's your king, Israel.
31:03Don't you want to keep your king alive?
31:05We have no king but Caesar.
31:08Think about that statement from the Jewish religious leaders.
31:11Think about that.
31:12God has always been their king.
31:15He's the one who became their king in the exodus.
31:17He became the one who led them, the sovereign ruler in their life.
31:20Now they're saying, we don't have a king, but Caesar.
31:24What about the king of kings and the Lord of lords?
31:26What about the great God who delivered you out of Egypt?
31:29You have no king but Caesar?
31:32What's wrong with you?
31:35How can you hate a person that bad?
31:39We have no king but Caesar.
31:40So they reject their Messiah.
31:45National rejection of the Messiah.
31:46I wonder today, where are you?
31:55Have you believed the gospel message?
31:57Have you believed that Jesus bore your sins on his body on the tree?
32:01That he died for your sins?
32:03That he was buried?
32:04That he rose again the third day?
32:06And that by believing in his name, we have life and forgiveness of sins brought into the
32:11family of God and given the Holy Spirit of God.
32:13Have you believed the gospel message?
32:16Either here or at home watching us?
32:18Or are you like them?
32:20You're rejecting this message and you say, you know what?
32:22I can do it my own way.
32:24I can earn my own salvation.
32:25I can merit it myself.
32:26I can please God with my own actions.
32:29In reality, we're all rebels at heart.
32:32Separated from the love of God and the very grace and mercy of God until God comes into
32:37our life.
32:38Shows us his mercy and shows us his grace and he redeems us.
32:42Have you believed the gospel message today?
32:46They didn't.
32:47They rejected.
32:49And now, the next scene we see is he's going to the cross.
32:53A.W. Tozer said, the cross of the Roman times knew no compromise.
33:01It never made concessions.
33:04It won all its arguments by killing its opponent and silencing him for good.
33:09It spared not Christ but slew him the same as the rest.
33:13He was alive when they hung him on that cross and completely dead when they took him down six
33:18hours later.
33:19The cross, no compromise, makes no concessions.
33:26It kills its opponents.
33:28And we look at this text today and we say, how am I supposed, what am I supposed to do
33:33with this information?
33:34What am I supposed to, other than believe the gospel, yes, but as a believer, what am I supposed
33:37to do with this information?
33:39I can't really apply it to myself.
33:41I'm never going to die for someone else's sin.
33:43How can I apply this to my very life?
33:46None of us have suffered this way, ever.
33:48We've suffered, but never like this.
33:51What can we learn from this text today?
33:55There's one word that we can learn from this text today.
33:59Gratitude.
34:01Thank you, Jesus.
34:04Thank you that you would do this for me.
34:06Thank you, Jesus.
34:07We thank him with our praise, which we did this morning already.
34:14We thank him with our praise.
34:16Thank him with your obedience to his word.
34:19When he asked, we act.
34:22Thank him with your very life.
34:25Thank him.
34:27It elicits within me a gratitude that is so deep.
34:31A willingness to even be like the disciples and say, I'm willing to lay down my life for
34:35him.
34:38Thank him.
34:41The usual formula for the sentence of crucifixion is, in Latin,
34:46ebus in cruisum.
34:48You shall go to the cross.
34:52And
34:52he did.
34:56Father, we thank you.
35:03It was wicked and lawless men that murdered Jesus.
35:06Yes, we understand that.
35:08But it was your predetermined plan.
35:11For the salvation of sinners could not be effected without the work of the son on the cross,
35:16his blood, and the new covenant that's inaugurated.
35:19He suffered so that we could have life.
35:24He died so that we could dwell with you forever.
35:33In Jesus' name.
35:34Amen.
