00:40And we will start at the SMH Group Stadium, where Chesterfield fought back from two goals down to secure a League Two draw at home to Crawley.
00:47Harry McCurley's double gave the visitors a two-goal lead at the interval, but Dylan Duffery and Armando Dobre scored in the second half to earn a point.
00:54I think me and Mark said at the start of the day we would have taken a point, but the manner of the result, Ron,
01:00it sounds like it was quite a frustrating day at the office for the Reds.
01:03What did you take away from that performance and what were the main takeaways?
01:08Yeah, I think I definitely would have had a point before the game started.
01:11But it was definitely a game of two halves, as seems to be the issue we call it at the moment.
01:17First half, it's very hard to tell who was second in the table and who was 20-second.
01:23Two goals from McCurdy, as you say, gave us a lead at half-time.
01:27And everybody thought he made it 3-0 just after then, but his goal was ruled out for offside.
01:31Not seeing the actual proper, a decent angle of it, but it doesn't look like he was particularly that far offside if he was.
01:40But then that quick fly just a little double, put him back on the, put Corey back on the back feet, on the feet again.
01:47And it was just, I don't know, we just didn't really turn up for the second half.
01:53We managed to keep him out, we managed to get the point, but Kane Dixon had a great chance to win the game.
02:00Not a bad miss, well, not a bad miss, because he didn't even get a chance to shoot.
02:05No, I think he went to try and take it to the right of the keeper, but ended up scuffing the ball.
02:10So he ended up having to go to the left of him, and then, as you say, he couldn't get shot off in the end.
02:14Main takeaways, if the Reds play to the whole, for the whole 90 minutes, then they'll be fine.
02:19They'll win games easy.
02:22They've got the talent to be a top-10 side, I think, personally.
02:26But for where it's just not clicking yet.
02:28I know it's a new team, it'll take a little time to get together, but it's getting there.
02:33And I think Saturday's a great chance for them to turn it around.
02:36Yeah, we'll come on to Saturday a little bit later on.
02:38But Scott Lindsay was very critical of Crawley's performance at Chesterfield in his post-match interview.
02:43Lindsay said, unprofessional moments cost a side in the draw at the Spirite, calling his players both weak and not brave enough.
02:50Very strong words from Lindsay, Mark.
02:52And I think that's the strongest I've ever heard him in that regard.
02:56And what do you make of his comments?
02:58Was he right to make them?
02:59And how do you think his players will respond to those accusations?
03:01Because it's a pretty damning assessment, by all accounts, isn't it?
03:05Yeah, it is.
03:07Yeah, you don't normally hear and go for the players like that.
03:10You can normally tell he's frustrated when there's certain performances.
03:14But whenever you ask him about individuals, he normally gets quite defensive and protects them, praises them.
03:22But he was, yeah, it was very strong.
03:23And he also said, yeah, we didn't play like us in the second half.
03:27We never played like us.
03:28We're supposed to be a possession-based team, but we were at 40% possession in that second half.
03:32That's not us.
03:33And why is that?
03:33It's because we're weak.
03:34We're giving in too easy to good opposition and we're not brave enough to step forward.
03:39So, yeah, really strong words.
03:40And I actually asked him yesterday about those comments and how the players have reacted to it.
03:46Because I'm always interested when a manager goes for his team, what it's like in training in the next few days.
03:53Because we know football players are sensitive creatures, aren't they?
03:57Like all humans, they don't like being criticised.
03:59But he said their mentality is brilliant and they agree.
04:02They agree because I said to them after the game and he said he didn't need to raise his voice.
04:05He's just telling them the truth.
04:07But he just spoke really open to them.
04:09Sometimes he says he does protect them, but he couldn't feel he could certainly in the press this time.
04:14But he felt they let the game slip through their own doing.
04:20I was very grumpy after the game.
04:21I want it to be clear.
04:23I think it's got to be clear.
04:24Sorry, I've got a literal translation of a transcript of what he said.
04:29I think it's got to be clear to my players more than anybody that I want to win games.
04:33I don't accept going 2-0 up and then drawing a game.
04:39So it's quite refreshing, really, to see a manager really go for his team, especially after that.
04:48I mean, like I say, before a game, everybody would have taken a point away at Chesterfield the way they were playing.
04:54But after that first half performance, like Ron said, you just want them to hang on.
04:59But Lindsay did also say yesterday, if they had won a game before Chesterfield, they would have gone on probably to win that game.
05:06But because confidence is so low, because they haven't got that elusive win yet, that's probably why they didn't quite hang on to it.
05:13It does sound like a dad saying to his kid, I'm not angry.
05:17I'm just very disappointed.
05:18Yeah, I'm just disappointed.
05:21Well, someone I don't think Scott Lindsay would have been too disappointed with was summer signing Harry McCurdy.
05:26As we mentioned, he hit his first goal for Crawley at Chesterfield.
05:29I think we said in an earlier podcast, Ron, that McCurdy took quite a lot of stick from Crawley fans being booed at one game.
05:35I can't remember which.
05:36But how pleased are you?
05:38The Swansea game, it was.
05:38The Swansea game, there we go.
05:40The Swansea game.
05:41How pleased are you to see McCurdy fit and firing?
05:44And, yeah, as I said, Scott Lindsay, reading his post-match interview, sounded like he was delighted with McCurdy.
05:49Yeah, I mean, yeah, as Mark said, he did get a little bit of stick from the fans after the Swansea game.
05:56And Scott perhaps rightly had a little moan about it.
06:01I'm happy he's scoring.
06:03It's good to see him playing well.
06:06And Scott, as you say, Scott said, he said, I'm pleased Harry got his goals.
06:09And I've been saying to the supporters, you'll love him.
06:12And they did today because he actually said in the morning at the hotel, he said, I'll get a brace.
06:16And he did.
06:16So he predicted getting one beforehand.
06:20And all the fans were loving him and they're kind of coming around to see the work he puts in.
06:25In his post, in his pre-Harrogate match, he said, I don't want to sit here and say I told you to, but I did tell you so.
06:31So, you know, he's a good player.
06:35He's exciting.
06:35He works extremely hard.
06:37He's a great character, but a real kind of personality on the pitch, which is something that Corley haven't had this season so far.
06:44So, yeah, he's obviously been playing out of position early start of the season due to injuries.
06:49But hopefully now he's back in where he needs to be and it'll give him the confidence to go on.
06:55Yes, absolutely.
06:56And hopefully he bags another couple on Saturday.
06:58Another summer signing, Dion Pereira made his first Corley Town appearance at Chesterfield on Saturday, coming off the bench on the 61st minute to replace Louis Watson.
07:07It was only a half an hour cameo, Ron.
07:09But how did he equip himself?
07:10And can we expect to see Pereira and Lindsay starting line-ups in the near future?
07:15Yeah, I think so.
07:16He needs to get back into full fitness.
07:21He'll probably play a bit more this week.
07:24Probably from the bench again.
07:26It's certainly something, same with Harry Forster down both sides.
07:31It's players that they've not had and played without position.
07:34So, it's great to get them back in as soon as we can.
07:38But I certainly think Dion Pereira will be a fixture to come very soon.
07:43Yes, absolutely.
07:44Meanwhile, Adi Adi Emo needed treatment after a fan appeared to throw an object at the Reds forward after Harry McCurdy had made it 2-0 to Corley from the penalty spot.
07:52Obviously, it seems we don't want to see, Mark.
07:55How was Adi Emo after the incident?
07:57What did Lindsay have to say about it?
07:59And have Chesterfield received any punishment at all?
08:02Well, I had a look through yesterday and I couldn't see that they had been.
08:06I'm assuming the club is investigating and trying to find the culprit because those people just do not belong in football or shouldn't be allowed to watch football.
08:14But from my understanding, Adi Emo's fine.
08:19He had a little cut on his head.
08:20I don't know what the actual missile was that was thrown, but it happened after, yeah, after McCurdy scored his penalty.
08:28And McCurdy, who Lindsay also called a pantomime villain yesterday, he did go.
08:34I mean, there's no excuse for what this person did.
08:38But I saw a few comments from Chesterfield fans saying, we don't condone this, but did he really need to celebrate like he did in front of us kind of thing?
08:47It shouldn't matter if he should be able to celebrate a goal however much he wants in front of whoever he wants.
08:52As long as he's not really goading them, he's just celebrating.
08:55He's happy he scored a goal and it happened to be at the end in front of the Chesterfield fans.
08:59Yeah.
09:00So, but yeah, Adi Emo's fine apparently.
09:03I also even saw someone saying, I think it was Steve Leaker mentioned in his column that he saw comments saying that, oh, sorry, I've just deleted something that I wanted to keep open.
09:15He said that there was some says saying that Adi Emo made a meal of it, which is just.
09:20Blimey.
09:22Yeah, which is just.
09:24You get hit by a coin and make a meal of it.

09:59He's the best manager in the world when they win.

10:06someone if somebody celebrates in front of me today?

10:14But the only thing I can put to say that in his head is his side of playing so badly,
10:20he wants to make this frustration somehow.
10:22But it shouldn't have happened.

10:33Well, especially as well, considering they had a whole other half to play.
10:39And as they found out, just to feel brought back into it, didn't they?

10:48Moving on to transfers now.
10:50Last week's our experienced defender Scott Malone returned to Crawley Town on a one-year
10:54contract.
10:55The 34-year-old spent eight months with the Reds but left the club to join Cambridge United
10:59started in March after making three appearances.
11:02What did you make of Malone's return, Ron?
11:04Good to have him back.
11:05And what did Lindsay have to say upon his arrival?
11:08Yeah, it's certainly going to bring experience to the team, which Scott has certainly been
11:12going on about in the last couple of weeks.
11:15Lindsay said he will add now some know-how to this squad, something that they've been
11:19lacking so far.
11:22After the test of the game, he said, is he going to start for us every week?
11:25Probably not.
11:26But he's a good person to have in the building.
11:28He's played God knows how many games in levels above this Championship Premier League,
11:33by the way.
11:33So it's vital we've got this.
11:35I think it's a good signing.
11:37Again, I don't think he'll play every week.
11:40But it's a play.
11:41You can bring off the bench, you know, to replace one of the back three.
11:46You can calm head at the back there.
11:48When we are winning games 2-0 and looking like we're going to perhaps concede a goal,
11:52we can bring him on to perhaps just sit in front of the back four or three and close
11:57the game out, actually.
12:00Yeah, absolutely.
12:01I'm surprised to see him back, Mark.
12:02I must admit it's one that caught me a bit off guard.
12:04Malone's return.
12:05Yeah, he did a little bit because, yeah, there's a little bit of mystery that surrounded him
12:09when he left because he joined and led the summer of whenever it was.
12:13And, yeah, and he played – I think he played in the first three games of last season
12:18when Crawley did win their first two games in League One.
12:22And then did they draw one of that?
12:23And then suddenly he just wasn't involved anymore and then he left the club.
12:27So he is a local lad as well.
12:30So his family live in Broadfield, I think, in Crawley.
12:34So, yeah, so when he first joined, he talked about, oh, he's always wanted to play for Crawley
12:41because of the local connection and all that.
12:43So – and I know Scott's a big fan, but, yeah, like Ron said, it's all about the experience
12:48because, yeah, that's what Crawley need.
12:50They need that – if Scott Malone was fully match fit and ready to come
12:55and if they'd had Ryan Loft, who we're going to come on to in a minute,
12:58with that little bit of extra experience, would they have seen the game out against Chesterfield
13:02having that know-how come on the pitch?
13:05Who knows?
13:06It's all ifs and buts, isn't it?
13:07But, yeah, no, yeah, I was surprised to see his name come back.
13:13But, yeah, no, good signing.
13:15And as you mentioned, Mark, the Reds also made a move on transfer deadline day
13:18for striker Ryan Loft, who has arrived from League Two rivals Cambridge United
13:22on a season-long loan.
13:24The Tottenham Academy graduate scored three times in 38 appearances
13:27for Cambridge after joining the youths with Port Vale in July last year.
13:32What do you make of a move, Mark?
13:34I think me and you have spoken off the podcast about his goal return,
13:39which isn't the greatest.
13:40But aside from that, where will Loft sit in the pecking order?
13:44Because they brought in a hell of a lot of strikers, didn't they, over the summer.
13:47How do you see the hierarchy of strikers panning out as the season progresses?
13:53Yeah, it's an interesting one, isn't it?
13:54Yeah, you mentioned he hasn't got rave reviews.
13:57Is he from the Cambridge United fans?
13:59I did sort of mention off the camera yesterday to Lindsay,
14:04and we sort of discussed the fact that they didn't have a great opinion of him.
14:08But he said, look at Danilo Orsi.
14:10The two seasons before he joined Crawley, he scored two or three goals.
14:14So I'm not saying that Ryan Loft's going to come in and do that,
14:18what Orsi did, but who knows?
14:20Yeah.
14:20But, yeah, I mean, you look at the attackers they've got.
14:25I mean, if you include Adi Adi Yemo, rarely plays up top as a striker,
14:30but he is an attacking player.
14:31Danny Cashman, Fate Cote, Dion Pereira, Louis Flower, Tola Shawani,
14:36Harry McCurdy, Kaby Shemanga, Kaheen Dixon and Ryan Loft.
14:40Now, that's a lot of attacking options.
14:43I mean, we've seen Shemanga play up front initially.
14:47It hasn't quite worked out for him.
14:49He works hard, but, yeah, just hasn't.
14:52He scored that goal against Swansea, but he hasn't really kicked on from there.
14:55And then, obviously, we saw Harry McCurdy this weekend just gone.
14:59He scored two goals.
15:00Louis Flower was brilliant during pre-season, scored loads of goals.
15:04He hasn't had his chance to start off top on his own.
15:07Tola Shawanmi, he had a little bit of a really good spell last year,
15:10scored that amazing goal at Charlton away.
15:14So, he's got a load of options.
15:16I mean, with Loft, sorry, my cat has just walked on my keyboard.
15:22It's all going well this morning, isn't it, Mark?
15:23It's all going well.
15:26Yeah, sorry, where was I?
15:27Yes, but Ryan Loft, I mean, initially,
15:30I just assumed he's been brought in for numbers, experience,
15:35just to have that thing.
15:36But talking to Lindsay yesterday, I got the impression Lindsay's quite excited
15:41about him because one thing Crawley haven't really had in his time,
15:48and he said this yesterday, is a big forward.
15:51They haven't had someone who they can lump crosses into,
15:55and he was at pains to say they're not going to turn into a side
15:59that just lumps the ball into the box.
16:01But he's been trying to get his players to cross the ball more,
16:03and now that they've got a target man like Ryan Loft,
16:06possibly that entices the players to cross the ball anymore
16:11because Shimanga, good player, but he's not the tallest of players.
16:16I mean, Shawanmi is someone who is quite a big player,
16:18but Lindsay only had him for a little bit in his first spell
16:21because he was mainly under Rob Elliott where he played.
16:25But Lindsay said yesterday, I'm watching him in training,
16:27and I'm quite excited to see him play.
16:29He's a good footballer.
16:30He's come out of Tottenham.
16:31Tottenham don't usually have bad footballers for a start.
16:34You could argue that.
16:37He can handle the ball really well.
16:39He's actually really, really quick.
16:41He's a fast runner for a big lad,
16:42and he's a big lad which we've not been blessed with,
16:44certainly at the top of the pitch since I've been here.
16:47And here he is in the quote,
16:49not that we're going to start lumping it forward because we're not,
16:51but it gives us physicality from set pieces in both boxes.
16:55He's a brilliant signing for me.
16:56Looking forward to seeing him play.
16:57He's been amazing in training, I've got to say.
17:00So, yeah, it's a part.
17:02I mean, I know Lindsay always does his due diligence on players,
17:05but it sounds like Lindsay's been more impressed with him
17:07by having him in training than he did from what he saw beforehand.
17:11I don't know if that's the case.
17:13But who knows?
17:15I mean, if he's impressed,
17:16because Lindsay's always been a big one of saying,
17:19everyone's got a chance of starting on a Saturday
17:22if they impressed me in training and the way he's talking about him,
17:25he might think,

17:27I know we're going to get onto the,

17:33This week,
17:34obviously they've got,
17:35we're going to come onto who's missing this week and that,
17:38but because of the players that are missing,
17:40or that player that's missing,
17:42it could,
17:42you could be a surprise first choice.
17:44And especially against a team like Harrogate,
17:46the team's up North.
17:47I know it's a bit of a stereotype.
17:48They're always physical.
17:50Yes.

17:53Lindsay might see this as an opportunity of,

18:04The Harrogate won't be preparing for a big striker coming in and
18:07putting himself about.

18:35Wolof became just the 17th new player to join the Reds over the summer.
18:40But did Crawley miss out on any last minute transfer deals,

18:43Were there areas Lindsay was still desperate to improve despite a very,
18:47very busy summer?
18:49Yeah,
18:49I'm not sure there was any particular areas he was looking to improve on,
18:54but he did say,
18:55I did ask,
18:56was there anyone they missed out?
18:58Were there any deals they were close to?
18:59And he said,
19:00there was one that got quite close to.
19:02In fact,
19:02we're still waiting on the EFL,
19:03whether it can go through or not.
19:05I don't think I can explain that further.
19:07It's just an ongoing process.
19:09Weirdly enough,
19:10even though the deadline has passed,
19:11I think he can still appeal certain things.
19:13And then I said,
19:14so it's frustrating then.
19:16And Lindsay simply said,
19:17yes,
19:17and gave a little wry smile.
19:21Yeah,
19:21my understanding is that it's a young midfielder from a Premier League side that was coming in on loan.
19:28But there might have been a little bit of a mistake on paperwork or something.
19:32It was the paperwork filed before the deadline.
19:36But from what I understand,
19:38yeah,
19:38there might have been a mistake,
19:39but they corrected that mistake.
19:41And by all accounts,
19:43there's been many,
19:44many paper,
19:45much paperwork in the past that have had mistakes.
19:48But as long as it's filed before deadline and then corrected before the squads announced for the season,
19:53which I think was yesterday,
19:55it was supposed to be.
19:57They normally get put through these transfers,
20:01but for some reason,
20:02the EFL taking their time on this.
20:04So,
20:05yeah,
20:05it's a frustrating one for them because if it is a young midfielder from a Premier League side,
20:11you imagine what's that player going to be doing now for the next six months or for the season.
20:18Donovan would still be just playing academy football,
20:20which is great for their development.
20:22But as we've seen last year with,
20:25I've forgotten his name instantly.
20:27Who was the bright and lonely last year from who played at Crawley?
20:31Oh,
20:31Kamari Doyle.
20:32Kamari Doyle.
20:33That's it.
20:34God,
20:34that completely came out of my head.
20:35He was a revelation when he came in in January and scored so many important,
20:40well,
20:40almost important goals to help try and keep Crawley up.
20:45And yeah,
20:46and Crawley have had good lines before.
20:47And it's so important to these young players' development that they get to play men's professional football.
20:55League two is a tough standard and to go from academy to that is quite a big step up and a different step up.
21:01And it's really good for their development if they want to then go on to go and loan a league one side,
21:07a championship side or even another Premier League side in the future.
21:10So,
21:11yeah,
21:11it just seems to me if the paperwork was all done for deadline and there was one little mistake on it,
21:19you just think the EFL surely,
21:20as long as they recognise the mistake and realise it's been corrected,
21:23why can't it just be waved through?
21:25But we'll see.
21:26We're still waiting to hear.
21:27We haven't heard that it's not happening.
21:29We haven't heard that it is happening still.
21:30So we'll just have to wait and see.
21:32But I think it was a little bit of frustration from Lindsay about it yesterday.

21:38even though we may have passed the deadline for the EFL squad registration list,
21:42there is still a chance that Crawley might have a new loanee coming in.

22:54And it seems like the perfect moment for Crawley to strike and pick up their first

24:19I think presents an opportunity.
