00:01Bersatu will hold its annual General Assembly this weekend amid rising internal discord
00:06and unease over its alliance with PAS.
00:09Former Prime Minister and Bersatu President Muhyiddin Yassin faced his dissent, with University
00:14Science Malaysia political analyst Siva Murugan Pandyan saying some factions want a leadership
00:19transition before the next general election, citing the poisoned pen letter, while others
00:24remain loyal to him.
00:25He said Muhyiddin could use the Assembly to confirm he will lead Bersatu into GE 16 or
00:30announce when he plans to step down.
00:33Meanwhile, Asmi Hassan of Academy Nusantara said, Muhyiddin has maintained control because
00:38his opponents have not reached consensus and suggested some in Bersatu want him to become
00:43an advisor like Lim Guaneng in DAP.
00:47The poisoned pen letter, cited by FMT, accused Bersatu Deputy President Hamza Zainuddin of
00:52fabricating his claim to the Presidency under the Gobind Consensus and of attempting to
00:56undermine Muhyiddin Yassin's leadership.
00:59Shaza Shukri of the International Islamic University Malaysia said Muhyiddin and Hamza would likely
01:05show a united front, but the unresolved question is who will be the Prikata national poster boy
01:10for GE 16.
01:11Shaza also questioned whether Bersatu would pursue a Malay-first or Malaysia-first strategy
01:16to win non-Malay support.
01:18Separately, Asmi added that raising Bersatu's rift with PAS would be unwise since PAS is
01:23more stable and holds more MPs, leaving Bersatu reliant on PAS to mobilize voters in Malay-majority
01:29constituencies.
