Downton Abbey grand finale filled with nostalgia as cast and creator say goodbyeSource: The Independent
Transcript
00:00Are you personally ready to say goodbye to all those characters, or are you a bit sad tonight?
00:05I think they're going to live on with us for some time to come, you know.
00:08This show, it's still living, it's still got a way to go.
00:13This might be the last installment, but I don't think it's going to be forgotten.
00:16We sort of discovered the way to end it as we were making it.
00:19I know I wanted it to be a very emotional farewell, and I hope we've delivered that.
00:25Wonderful, because we got to say goodbye at the end of the series, and then through film.
00:30So this is an absolute bonus, and it's a beautiful film, I think we're very proud of it.
00:35So, really lovely.
00:36Yeah, it's the right time to finish.
00:38I was very conscious, I think most people thought this was the final hurrah,
00:43and I was very grateful to get involved just at the last minute with Downton.
00:48It's my last opportunity to join the world, and this is obviously the only Downton film I've appeared in.
00:53But it was very emotional.
00:55I kind of formed bonds very quickly with everyone, and then all too soon, you know, it was over.
00:59So, yeah, it was a real roller coaster.
01:02It feels nostalgic for leaving all my fellow actors, because we were a great ensemble,
01:07and we had a way of working with one another, which is a sort of shorthand,
01:11which you do have after you work with people for 15 years.
01:14And I'll miss the young ones, because I saw them when they started, and they hadn't done much work,
01:20and now they're all very, very good, very, very good actresses and actors who've got wonderful careers.
01:27I was wondering if you kept something from Downton Abbey as a souvenir.
01:31No, I never took anything. But on press nights, there used to be beautiful flowers,
01:36and I used to think all those flowers are going to waste.
01:39So at the end of the day, I used to say to them, please, can I take the flowers home?
01:44I took my bra, my pink bra that was made by our costume designer, Anna.
01:49And I love it, satin. I don't wear it, but I've got it in my drawer at home.
01:53But, yeah, so inevitably there is a hint of nostalgia about it, and I wouldn't say regret, but sorrow,
02:02maybe that's too big a word, but there's certainly a bit of sentimentality attached to the fact that we won't be doing this ever again.
02:14And it's more interesting.
02:18Let's give it a video.
