00:00For months, 16-year-old teenager Adam Raine confided in ChatGPT.
00:05Then, he took his own life.
00:08Now, facing a lawsuit from the boy's parents,
00:11the chatbot's parent company OpenAI is under pressure to act.
00:16It has announced the implementation of parental controls.
00:20Within the next month, parents will be able to
00:22link their account with their teen's account, minimum age of 13,
00:26through a simple email invitation,
00:28control how ChatGPT responds to their teen with age-appropriate model behaviour rules,
00:33which are on by default,
00:35receive notifications when the system detects their teen is in a moment of acute distress.
00:41It's a move the family's lawyer has labelled as crisis management
00:44and an attempt to change the subject.
00:47In a statement released on Tuesday, he reiterated that
00:50despite flagging Adam's chats nearly 400 times for containing references to self-harm,
00:56they allege the system continued to provide suicide methods and encouragement through the end of Adam's life.
01:03The lawyer has called on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to say unequivocally that he believes ChatGPT is safe
01:10or immediately pull it from the market.
01:13Other industry experts agree that parental controls will not solve all of the problems.
01:18The underlying problem is what will AI tell teenagers.
01:24There are underlying factors that lead many people to use conversational AI for mental health discussions.
01:30We can't escape this.
01:32So what we really need to do is make these exchanges secure.
01:36Parental control can only be one piece of the puzzle, but that isn't enough.
01:43ChatGPT continues to get more human-like with every update.
01:46And experts say it is designed to engage users above all else.
01:51In many cases, that means providing constant encouragement,
01:55even for anxious or negative thoughts.
