00:00Welcome you to the following presentation of the National Football League.
00:09Now EA Sports and the National Football League so proud to welcome you to the southeast section of Brazil
00:16and the world-renowned city of Sao Paulo.
00:19Tonight on this fine Thursday night, we've got a good one in store
00:23as it will be the Kansas City Chiefs taking on the L.A. Chargers.
00:30We're going to be the Kansas City Chiefs taking on the L.A. Chargers.
00:59They're underway from Brazil.
01:03Now they can't bring him down.
01:06And up to about the 26-yard line, just across the 25.
01:11The KC offense set to go led as always by the gunslinger,
01:15a former MVP in this league, it's Patrick Mahomes.
01:19And of course, number one, trying to win the game today.
01:21But for him, it's always about Super Bowls.
01:24He's trying to get back to his fourth consecutive one.
01:27Fell short of the NFL's first-ever three-peat in the Super Bowl last year.
01:31He wants to avenge that loss at the end of this season.
01:39First play, Mahomes looking to throw it.
01:41That's caught.
01:43It's Xavier Roeby.
01:46That's good.
01:46The completion there for seven yards.
01:49And they'll be left with second and a couple.
01:51A good safe pass there right off the bat.
01:54That's almost a rhythm play.
01:56That's what we like to call it.
01:57Get them into rhythm early.
01:58Something safe.
01:59Something they're confident about.
02:01Something they feel good.
02:02And once that's completed, then you just keep moving from there
02:05because the confidence elevates.
02:08And they'll only get a yard to bring up third and one.
02:12But not much on that run, Charles.
02:15No, that's exactly the way to execute a run.
02:17They guessed correctly that they would move the ball on the ground,
02:21honed in on it, and stopped them.
02:23Marked that down for a win in the defense's column.
02:25But just play number three here on the opening drive,
02:28and it's an early third and one.
02:29Mahomes takes it himself.
02:33And he will have a Chiefs first down.
02:35At least it would appear that way.
02:37He didn't get it by much.
02:38But, yes, they do get the conversion on third and one.
02:42They pick it up on third and one on the quarterback sneak,
02:45and that's not easily done because there are extra bodies in there
02:48on the defensive side, and they're moving forward at the snap.
02:51Yeah, I was certainly expecting a handoff, weren't you?
02:53Yeah, I totally was.
02:54I thought we'd go with it back, maybe trying to get a lead blocker in front of it.
02:58But if you talk about it in different games,
03:00those guys with confidence in their offensive line,
03:03they just want to move forward and get it.
03:05Sometimes I forget how much information he has to go through
03:08before the ball's even snapped.
03:10But what a diagnosis right there.
03:12Saw the play, shot through the gap like a rocket.
03:15Ends up spilling it for a loss.
03:17Now they'll throw with Mahomes.
03:21Man open left side as well.
03:24To give him two yards there on the completion.
03:27And that brings up third and a full ten yards.
03:29And right where this set of downs started,
03:40they need a full ten here to pick up the first down and move the chains.
03:44to throw.
03:46It's Mahomes.
03:52Man able to get this with a cross for 45 before he's brought down.
03:57Nothing open downfield.
03:59He keeps it himself for 11 and a first down.
04:02He's a talented runner.
04:04That means he's always looking for bigger and bigger gains when he takes off.
04:08Certainly found some bonus yards there beyond the first down marker.
04:11And this early drive will continue with that extra jolt from his legs.
04:17First and ten.
04:18Here's DiCicco.
04:19Nifty move.
04:21He's going to be out of bounds, but not before he takes it inside the 40.
04:26Another nice gain.
04:2716 yards there and a first down again.
04:31And that's how he gets started and opens up the game.
04:33Really well blocked play.
04:35Picked up a nice chunk of yardage.
04:37If you're the offensive line, that's exactly what you've talked about all week long in your meetings.
04:42Establish the line of scrimmage and take control.
04:45And they gave their running back plenty of room to run with it.
04:48And this time they were waiting for him as he'll be knocked down before he can get back to the line of scrimmage.
04:55It's a loss of four there, bringing up second down.
04:59When coaches stress their defense being physical, they don't just mean the big guys.
05:02How about the guys on the outside, the cornerbacks?
05:05It's not just their job to patrol the airspace.
05:08They can get involved in the run game as well.
05:12Mahomes going to throw.
05:14This will be caught by Brown.
05:16And they're able to get this one past the 30 to the 25-yard line.
05:21That's good for a first down.
05:23His second catch in the opening drive.
05:24And this was a nice example of an offensive coordinator scheming his guy open.
05:35Just a little underneath route.
05:36Just trying to free up some space.
05:38And it worked awfully well.
05:40Got him not just space, but plenty of room to run after the catch to pick up really nice yardage.
05:46And it's straight, it's Pacheco.
05:52And nothing doing.
05:53He's immediately taken down at the line of scrimmage.
05:57Officially, it's a one-yard loss.
05:59That's going to bring up second and 11 yards.
06:01Ah, it's tough one right there.
06:03He ran right to the teeth of the blitz as the linebacker was freed up in order to stump that one for a loss.
06:08I think quarterbacks got to see that.
06:10Got to find a way to audible into something a little more advantageous.
06:13And that nearly an interception here on this opening drive that he gets a reprieve.
06:21It's third down.
06:24And I think he was a little surprised to see the ball sitting out there like that.
06:29That's a ball he had a chance to come away with.
06:31But it winds up an incomplete pass.
06:38Looking to throw is Mahomes.
06:40We're from the middle of the field and he's got Mahomes complete.
06:45And he will have a Chiefs first down as they're able to get the third down conversion.
06:50That's another Kansas City Chiefs first down.
06:54How about a nod to the sequence of plays they're putting together here.
06:57This has been death by a thousand paper cuts on this drive.
07:01But this is one of their best plays yet.
07:02And they're able to move it down into the red zone.
07:05That quick throw there is incomplete.
07:15That was a lightning fast incompletion.
07:17He got it.
07:17He threw it.
07:18It fell to the ground.
07:19With that expression, life comes at you fast.
07:21In this case, the defenders came even faster.
07:24Incomplete.
07:27Second and ten.
07:28And now some motion before the snap.
07:38And this will be our first penalty of the night's proceedings.
07:42Of course, that flag accepted and it backs the ball up five yards.
07:49Still second down.
07:51And that false start penalty certainly not helping their cause here.
07:55Second down and long.
07:58Mahomes to throw once more.
08:02Over the middle complete.
08:03That's Brown.
08:05So the completion good for seven there.
08:08And 38 down.
08:10Well, that's not just his first, not his second already.
08:13His third completion here on the opening drive.
08:16And I think it's safe to say that getting him the ball in this game,
08:19one of their top priorities.
08:21And a top priority for the defense has got to be finding ways to cover him.
08:25And I don't think you can have one basic coverage to get it done.
08:28You have to throw a number of coverages at him.
08:31Make him think as he's running downfield.
08:33And hope you can create a little bit of havoc.
08:35The Chiefs on third down.
08:37A perfect three for three as they look to keep that streak going.
08:40This is third and eight.
08:41Now Mahomes.
08:49And it's caught.
08:51And in for the Chiefs touchdown.
08:55Noah Gray from eight yards out.
08:58And the Chiefs post the first points of the ball game
09:01as they take the lead here in this second quarter.
09:03Well, that drive felt like it took up an eternity.
09:09We finally have some action on the scoreboard.
09:11Yeah, but plenty of action prior to
09:13because that drive took up all the first quarter
09:15before we spilled into the second.
09:17And finally, points were registered.
09:19On the other sideline, they're chomping at the bit
09:21just to get the football.
09:29Harrison Bunker is on for the extra point.
09:31And his kick is good to make it 7-0, KC.
09:42That drive, a long one, spanning 15 plays.
09:46The Chiefs with the football as we start the second quarter
09:49as they've got it as we resume action.
10:01Now after the touchdown, here's Bunker on to kick it away.
10:12And he'll take it up past the 25 to the 26-yard line.
10:24Here are the Chargers ready to go on offense
10:26led by their first-round pick in 2020.
10:29The man out of Oregon, Justin Herbert.
10:32And I'll bet he's talking to his guys about resisting the temptation
10:35to try and turn this into an up-and-down game.
10:38Almost like basketball, where both teams press
10:41and one team gets an advantage.
10:43Our team's trying to run with them,
10:44and they're just not equipped for it.
10:46Doesn't matter whether you're equipped or not.
10:48Just settle in.
10:49Get calm before you go for the big strikes.
10:52Play action this time for Justin Herbert.
10:57So the completion good for just three.
11:00And it's second down.
11:02Random to me, what's important right here on this drive
11:04is for them to get at least two first downs.
11:07They've got to give their defense a chance to settle down,
11:09catch their breath a little bit,
11:11after they give up a touchdown on the opening drive.
11:13Second and six, just inside the 30.
11:16Now Herbert with it, looking to pass.
11:22It's taken in by Quentin Justin.
11:25And they get it down, but not before he takes it
11:27across the 40-yard line.
11:30First target, first catch, and a first down.
11:34Their first possession of the game,
11:35and they're already going after double coverage.
11:38That's a nice completion that can set the tone for things to come
11:41if they're able to keep finding ways to beat
11:42when the defense is throwing at them.
11:44They look like they're confident that they can get it done.
11:48Trying to turn the corner,
11:50but he's going to be stopped right near the line of scrimmage.
11:53They'll lose a yard there, and it's second and 11.
11:56With this size, he's a tough man to bring down,
11:59but they do a nice job there stopping his progress
12:01and not allowing him to get back to the line of scrimmage.
12:04So after the loss of a yard,
12:06they'll look to push forward here on second down and 11.
12:09Herbert now.
12:10That's into the hands of his tight end, Will Dislip.
12:15And it'll be taken down, but not before he gets into enemy territory.
12:2012 yards there as they keep this drive rolling.
12:23It's another first down.
12:2447 yards.
12:25Harris running straight ahead.
12:38Trying to run inside, but nothing there.
12:41It's a loss of a yard there, and it's second down.
12:43Another example right there of how this defense really is winning the entire game
12:48at the point of attack.
12:49Yeah, right there with the line of scrimmage because they're dominating it.
12:52It allows their interior guys to get upfield and spill into the backfield.
12:56So how are you going to combat that?
12:57You know, because they're bringing your tight end, keep him in.
13:00If you're running backs, they have to step forward.
13:02Bottom line, your offensive line has to block them first to give yourself a chance.
13:0712 yards there as they keep this drive rolling.
13:11It's another first down.
13:13Boy, everything clicking on this drive.
13:15He's full for four now, and that throw may be the best of the bunch.
13:19This offense is really humming, and they pick up another first down.
13:26In motion right comes Allen.
13:30Now a first down carry for Harris.
13:33Yeah, he is met at the line of scrimmage, and he goes down right there.
13:37George Karloftis, the man to bring him down.
13:41Nice job there defensively to clamp down because, really,
13:45they've been on their heels this drive.
13:47Agreed, and they really needed that one for confidence,
13:50just to feel a little bit better.
13:52But I don't know if I would be daunted by them stopping me on one run.
13:55This drive has gone pretty well.
13:57I could come right back in.
13:59And that falls to the ground incomplete.
14:01A nice job of bonding him up defensively,
14:05and now he brings up third down.
14:07Here's Herbert.
14:25And a throw there going to be incomplete.
14:27Well, how about the coverage we just saw break out on third down?
14:33Dime defense, blanketed in the field with extra defensive backs and speed.
14:38Unable to find an open hole to complete that pass.
14:42Cameron Dicker on now to try the field goal.
14:45He's going to need a little mustard on this one.
14:47And it will be 51 yard to 10.
14:50And this one is right down the middle.
14:53And they are on the board but still trailing.
14:56It's 7-3.
14:58So from an offensive perspective,
15:00at least able to get on the board here right in front of the two-minute warning.
15:03Yeah, now it's time to talk about complementary football, isn't it?
15:06Because if the defense can force a three and out,
15:08there could be enough time on the clock that they get the ball back for their offensive guys
15:12and maybe put some more points on the board before the half.
15:14So after the touchdown, here's Dicker out to kick this one off.
15:36And it takes this near the 25.
15:38Just a little pass there, caught at the 26.
15:41Kansas City taking the field for their second drive.
15:45This drive here beginning probably with a pair of motivated groups.
15:49Remember the offense scored a touchdown on their last timeout.
15:52Looking to repeat that in Charles' defense.
15:54They were very frustrated after giving up six the last time on the field.
15:58And frankly, it's just a battle of wills in a lot of ways
16:00because you know they're both motivated.
16:03They both game plan for this drive.
16:05And they both have specific outcomes in mind.
16:07To me, it just comes down to who can execute better
16:10and which side can stem up and assert its will over the other.
16:14Looking to find a lane, but he can't.
16:16Reined in at the line of scrimmage.
16:20Officially no gain on the play, and it's second down.
16:24The running lanes have definitely not been there for him here in the first half,
16:27and I don't think it's all been his fault.
16:29His offensive line hasn't given him much space.
16:32A loss results there.
16:34Two minutes to play in this first half.
16:36Seven-three, our score.
16:39Still nine yards to go on second down from the 27.
16:45Here's Mahomes to throw.
16:49It's incomplete.
16:51Take a shot.
16:52Couldn't come in.
16:53That's a good closing speed there defensively because that looked open for a minute.
16:59That's great work with the ball in the air.
17:01Never gave up.
17:03Converged on his man and broke the play up.
17:06After an incomplete pass on second down,
17:08that'll leave him trying to convert on third and nine.
17:12Throwing now is Mahomes.
17:15They'll drop this off to Pacheco.
17:16And the Chargers are going to signal for the first of their timeouts
17:20as they'll head to the sideline and talk over what to do next.
17:25Oh, it forks out.
17:41The Chiefs send out Matt O'Reiser to punt.
17:44Back deep for L.A. is Darius Davis.
17:46The good kick, 48 yards, four on the return.
17:57And it'll be Charger football here as they take over.
18:00The Chargers get set to go here for their second drive.
18:04And after the field goal last time, we'll see what they can get here.
18:07At least they got points out of the last drive, Charles.
18:10I never met an offensive coach that didn't want to drive to end with a kick.
18:13Most of them want to end with a PAT, right?
18:16In this case, a field goal, they'll take it.
18:19Way better than the alternative, which is a punt.
18:21Yeah, but you've met fan bases that wanted that,
18:24that weren't happy with that field goal.
18:26I haven't met a fan base yet that wants to drive to end with a kick.
18:28Other than Dix could run.
18:30That's it.
18:32They'll get further out of the screen and then second down.
18:35Nice job by the defense.
18:37Figuring that play out and holding it to a short game.
18:40But I don't think the offense is going to be daunted.
18:42They actually accomplished their goal there.
18:43Now they've got them aware that they can throw a screen at them.
18:47Maybe it'll slow the pass rush down a little bit and they can throw it downfield.
18:51Here's Herbert.
18:54For Keenan Allen, that's complete.
18:57And he's dropped just before the line to gain.
19:00Four-yard pickup leaves him with third and one.
19:03It's time to give a little credit there to the defense.
19:06They played that very well because it was a drag round.
19:08And he ran a little shallower than normal as he worked straight across the field.
19:12He was hoping he'd get lost behind the defensive line.
19:15But once he made the catch, nowhere to turn upfield and gain any yardage.
19:19Oh, this pass broken up.
19:22And the contact well timed there.
19:24And now fourth down.
19:27Oh, I thought he had that one.
19:29And that was nearly a big third down conversion to give this drive some life.
19:33Instead, they're on the spot.
19:35And they'll separate the receiver from the ball.
19:37On fourth down, J.K. Scott ready to punt it away.
19:41Nico Lomigio deep for KC.
19:45Calls for the fair catch.
19:46Makes the fair catch just inside the 15-yard line.
19:50So a change of possession here on the punt.
19:54And the Chiefs are going to take over with a long field ahead and a first and ten.
19:58Now here's Mahomes.
20:21Open man right side is Rice.
20:24The Chiefs are going to use the first in their timeout.
20:27as they'll stop it with 40 seconds remaining in this first half.
20:46Here's second and seven.
20:53Mahomes now to throw.
20:55Toward the side line.
20:58And look at that catch.
20:59Dragging the toes.
21:00And it's going to be a first down.
21:02Well done.
21:04Give him 12 yards on that one.
21:06And earns him a French shot of downs.
21:09And defensively, they were in zone coverage there.
21:11Do you have to be?
21:12I believe they buzzed down.
21:13They're going to take another look at this play.
21:15With all reviews coming from the replay official here in the final two minutes of the half.
21:20Did he keep those feet in bounds?
21:25That's the question they've got to decide.
21:28And I got to say, watching it in real time, it was awfully close.
21:31Yeah, it certainly looked like a heck of a catch because he didn't appear to bobble it,
21:35which could complicate things.
21:37But even with the benefit of replay, that's pretty tight.
21:40Well, here's the call.
21:47Line of scrimmage.
21:50The 31 now on first and 10.
21:57They'll set up a throw.
21:59They'll set up the screen to Pacheco.
22:01Now another timeout called for by the offense.
22:07As they'll stop it with a little over 30 seconds to go in the first half of play.
22:11A good yardage there on first down because sometimes all you need to do on the screen
22:15is get one key block.
22:17That might set your man free.
22:18And that was pretty good pursuit to the football defensively.
22:21Or it could have gone for more.
22:26Second down and three.
22:27And again, it's Mahomes.
22:35Pass to Brown.
22:36He's got it.
22:37On the crossing route.
22:39And Hulby stops right at midfield.
22:4212 yards there as they keep this drive rolling.
22:45It's another first down.
22:47The Chiefs quickly now going to use the last of their timeouts
22:50as the clock will stop with 21 seconds to go here in the first half.
22:57From midfield, here's Mahomes.
23:17Check this one down to Pacheco.
23:19Some extra space following the display of power.
23:24Down just inside to 45.
23:26Nifty running there, but it'll come on what should be the final play of half number one.
23:34So halftime is upon us on Thursday night primetime.
23:37And we go off to Orlando and Scott Hanson for our halftime report.
23:41All right, Brandon, thanks much.
23:45Scott Hanson, good to be with you from the Orlando EA Sports Studios
23:48with an abridged halftime report.
23:50This one, shaping up to be a tight one, as evidenced by the scoreboard.
23:54Both these teams playing it close to the best in the first half.
23:57What will happen in the second half?
23:59Let's find out as we send it back to the stadium and our commentary team.
24:03Brandon Godden and Charles Davis.
24:05Okay, Scott, thank you.
24:08And this one's still anybody's game.
24:10We'll see who can come out with a hot hand in this second half
24:13as we are about to get underway.
24:16The Chargers are going to get the football first here in this second half,
24:33and they trail as we get back underway.
24:39And up to about the 26-yard line, just across the 25.
24:43Now it comes to Chargers as they'll go on offense now to start this third quarter.
24:50This is a game, Charles.
24:51It's been fairly starved for offense, really not much in that first half.
24:55We'll see if they can get something going here as we look toward the third quarter.
24:58And not just a chance to finally get a little more offense going,
25:01but to erase that small deficit they're currently trailing by.
25:04I think they'd send a pretty powerful message to the opposite sideline
25:07if they drive it right down the field coming out of the half.
25:10Back to throw here, Herbert.
25:19That'll go for a gain of seven.
25:22And then we're running on second down.
25:24And his play call does a nice job of giving it an easy throw to start this drive,
25:28and he takes advantage of it.
25:30The completion sets up a manageable second down.
25:33Here's a second and three now from the 33.
25:41Now it's Herbert.
25:44Close offside, complete to Keenan Allen.
25:47And Allen's going to have the Chargers first down as he'll get this up to the 39.
25:52Just his second catch of the game so far.
25:55This one moves the chains.
25:56First and ten, and they've got three tight ends out there.
26:03A jumbo package look.
26:08A run with Harris out of his shotgun.
26:10Trying to keep those big legs churning, but he's going to go down in the backfield.
26:16That's going to go as a loss of two, and it'll be second down.
26:20This defense is just flat getting after it.
26:23They have not given up much of anything in the run game.
26:25Case in point right there.
26:27Looking at a second and 11 now after the loss.
26:33And they'll send the tight end in motion.
26:38Justin Herbert looking to pass.
26:41And this one finds McConkie.
26:44And he'll be taken down, but not before he works it past the 50.
26:47Just his second catch of the game so far.
26:51This one moves the chains.
26:52And the Chargers first down.
26:56First and ten on the 47-yard line.
27:01And that's a more than acceptable read right there because it's zone coverage.
27:06So timing is everything.
27:07This time he waits for his man to come open, puts it right on him,
27:10and they pick up a first down.
27:12Still in search of their first touchdown of the game,
27:15but they're on the move.
27:16First and ten.
27:17Open one, right side.
27:23That's McConkie.
27:25Go down to gate of six.
27:28And it's second down.
27:30A six-yard pickup brings up second and four at the 40-yard line.
27:35Going to run a toss here to Harris.
27:49And a nice move with you and nothing as he's stopped behind the line.
27:53That's a big loss of three, and it brings up third down.
27:57Two things to watch.
27:58First is strength and being able to break out that initial contact.
28:01But at his size, once you slow his momentum, it's hard for him to get it started again
28:07and end up tackling him behind the line of scrimmage.
28:09And he'll be brought down with a first down as the tackle's made at the Chiefs' 28.
28:20The Chargers passing game, rolling a bit here.
28:24They've got another first.
28:25I don't know what they talked about at halftime.
28:27Whatever it was, it worked.
28:29They look like a different team here in the third quarter.
28:31Yeah, I doubt that there are very many trash cans that got kicked over that type of a speech.
28:35I think what they did was they analyzed what worked in the first half, what didn't,
28:38and figured out a better game plan.
28:40Short throw to Dissler.
28:43A middle of a game there on the eighth play of the drive.
28:46Completion was given up, but that's why you play zone defense,
28:49so that you can have people around the ball when it's caught,
28:51and you don't give up much run after the catch.
28:56Second down and eight.
29:01Back to throw.
29:05Herbert.
29:06He's got a man.
29:07That's Keenan Allen.
29:08And he'll be brought down with a first down as the tackle's made at the Chiefs' 15-yard line.
29:14Give him 10 yards there as this offense is on a roll.
29:17This drive continues to punch forward.
29:23Line of scrimmage, the 15.
29:24It's first and 10.
29:26They hand this off to Harris.
29:36Effective running here.
29:37They take it down inside the town.
29:40It's a gain of seven on the ground.
29:42Second down coming up.
29:44They struggled to get him rolling on the ground in the first half,
29:47and that's sort of continuing here in the third quarter.
29:49Yeah, but I don't think it's time to abandon the running game.
29:51I would say keep feeding the horse, and I believe he'll eventually reward them,
29:55especially as we get deeper in the game.
29:58From the shotgun, here's Herbert.
30:01To the left side, he's got McConkie.
30:03And he'll get this down inside the five to the four before he's out of bounds.
30:08And the Chargers' first down.
30:12First and goal at the four-yard line.
30:23Hampton will take this into the end zone for a Charger touchdown.
30:29And maybe that's the magic touch right there.
30:32They didn't use him at all in the first half, at least running with football.
30:36And here they entrust him to work down in the red zone.
30:39And he respawned.
30:40One carry, one touchdown.
30:42And for the extra point, Cameron Dicker.
31:05And it's three, and that makes the lead 10-7.
31:15So that drag, 12 plays in length.
31:18And it results in a four-yard touchdown run.
31:21Okay, Scott, thanks a bunch.
31:23And we'll see which team's adjustments are going to pay dividends here
31:27as we are just about ready for the start of the second half.
31:31Here's Dicker now as he'll send this one away.
31:49And the tackle going to be made right there at the 25-yard line.
32:03So here's the Chiefs' offense ready for their first reps in half number two.
32:08And, Charles, it feels like we're set up for a good second half here.
32:11Came out of the locker room, one-score game.
32:13Now the lead has already changed hands.
32:16Well, this offense, they've got an opportunity right now to take that lead right back.
32:20Yeah, and it feels like you're going back and forth
32:22almost a little bit like a tennis match, right?
32:24And we're just, you know, our heads just keep moving.
32:26Which side has it?
32:27Which side's going to score?
32:28How are they going to go out doing it?
32:30A little bit of a challenge for each side trying to match each other.
32:33They'll start at the drive here with the checkup.
32:36And back to the 30.
32:37It'll be second down.
32:40I have to think a major focus of the halftime makes
32:42have to be figuring out how to create space for the running game to get operated.
32:46Well, what you pointed out to me at half seems accurate.
32:48That line has struggled to sustain blocks.
32:51Yeah, I would agree with that totally.
32:52They've got to focus on staying on their double teams at the first level,
32:55make sure that block's secured before they slide off,
32:58and try and chip someone at the second level.
33:01Fourth quarter coming up here on Thursday night primetime.
33:04But we'll return with more after this.
33:06You're watching the NFL on EA Sports.
33:16Back now here on EA Sports.
33:23Ball on the 30.
33:24They'll come up with a second and five.
33:30Looking to throw is Mahomes.
33:33This is caught.
33:34It's ball.
33:35And they bring him to the ground just shy of midfield.
33:39His fifth catch tonight, and it's good for a first down.
33:43First down.
33:46First down.
33:47And here we are in the fourth quarter partner who watched him drive
33:49for what would be a go-ahead touchdown.
33:52And you and I both know this is where you need a quarterback
33:54who can keep his cool back there, not just for himself,
33:58but to keep the rest of the team relaxed, too.
34:05Pacheco gets it up the gun.
34:07And he'll take this ahead for about four.
34:10Second down coming up.
34:12And that was a quality play to start a new set of downs.
34:14That was simply an offensive line winning the battle up front
34:17and winning it a big way
34:19and giving their guy in the backfield a nice lane to hit.
34:23From the 46-yard line, a second down and six.
34:28Mahomes going to throw.
34:32McKenna here, it's complete.
34:34And this time he's able to take it down to the 42.
34:37They'll give him four yards there.
34:40And now that sets up third and two.
34:43And we see another pitch and catch there to the running back.
34:45This position just continues to evolve.
34:48They become just as critical to the passing attack
34:50as a lot of receivers' tight ends
34:53because their ability to make people miss in the open field
34:55can really generate big plays for an offense.
34:59And he's going to be out of bounds down around a 45-yard line.
35:04It's a seven-yard gain and good enough to move the chains.
35:08They've been moving the ball well,
35:10but this drive was in danger of stalling out.
35:12Fortunately, this is a nice throw here,
35:14and they're able to pick up a new set of downs.
35:16On the handoff, it's Pacheco.
35:26And a short game down to about the 43.
35:29Credit to tackle that time to the shine hand.
35:33And the trend continues here in the fourth
35:35like it was in the first, second, and third.
35:36He's had nowhere to run.
35:38And you're probably thinking to yourself,
35:40why do they keep feeding him the football?
35:42Well, they trust him first and foremost.
35:43They do believe that over time he might actually pop one of these runs.
35:48But bottom line is he takes care of the ball well for them
35:50so they'll keep handing it to him.
35:53Throw a side, completion to Rice.
35:56And down inside the 15 it goes.
36:0019 yards there on the catch and run.
36:03This defense has certainly had an outstanding second half, haven't they?
36:06I know they just gave up a first down there for the offense.
36:09They're hoping that that's something they can jump start with
36:12and maybe start to move the ball a little bit better.
36:14But it's been tough sledding for them here the entire second half.
36:21And he'll dump it underneath to his running back complete.
36:24And the stop will come inside the 5 and the 4.
36:28So the completion results there in 9 yards.
36:31And that'll leave it with a second and just a few inches left.
36:46Mahomes quickly complete outrun.
36:49Touchdown!
36:49And the Chiefs answer back with a touchdown of their own
36:58to take a 4th quarter lead.
37:01But plenty of scoring here of late
37:03and our lead changes hands now in the 4th quarter.
37:06Yeah, they just gave up a touchdown on the other end
37:08so they knew that with time getting short
37:10they had to put something together here.
37:12and they were able to do so
37:14and retake the lead right back.
37:22Butker now to add the extra point.
37:29And that makes it 14-10.
37:33That time a 9-play drive.
37:36And it winds up with the Chiefs hitting Bader.
37:39Now after the touchdown, here's Butker on to kick it away.
38:09And he'll take it up past the 25 at the 26-yard line.
38:15Possession switching back now to the Chargers.
38:18And they will be looking to answer the touchdown.
38:20Their defense just surrendered.
38:22Still a good chunk of time remaining here in the 4th quarter
38:25and a chance to regain the lead in a tight one.
38:33Herbert going to lead up the Chargers here.
38:351st and 10 at their own 26.
38:39They'll try and start this drive in the air.
38:45Well, he's able to get out to the 32.
38:47Brought down there.
38:50Nice rhythm throw there on 1st down.
38:52He located his tight end.
38:53Made it a nice, easy pitch and catch.
38:55Hoping he can break a tackle or two.
38:56Wasn't able to do that there, but still good yardage.
39:01Here's 2nd down and 3.
39:07Here's Herbert.
39:08That win complete to McConkie.
39:13One thing I think that's safe to say defensively, the tackling's been really good.
39:17And because of that, it's been very, very hard for them to move the ball
39:20because you're not getting the benefits of run after catch.
39:23You're tackling them almost on the spot.
39:25That means you have to run extra plays, harder to move it.
39:28Fourth quarter, down to the final two minutes.
39:31And we've got a one-score game.
39:33But just a gigantic play here, both sides.
39:36This is 3rd and inches.
39:40Trying to pick it up on the ground with Harris.
39:42And that's going to be good for the Chargers 1st down as they get this after about to 42.
39:47We tend to give those running backs that are slashers a lot of credit.
39:56But how about guys who are maulers?
39:58Because that's what you want in short yardage situations.
40:00And we just saw that occur right there, didn't we?
40:02Vertical, downhill running.
40:04And his throw here is incomplete.
40:11Limited time left on the clock after that incompletion.
40:13So I think both sides are going to save for every second to prepare before the next snap.
40:18Because once the ball's in motion, it may be a nonstop push to finish this drive off.
40:24Everyone better be on the same page right now.
40:26Because I think they're going to try and get separate plays off in quick succession if they can.
40:31Herbert.
40:31Finding room in midfield.
40:35And he'll finally be taken down just shy of midfield.
40:39The Chargers going to signal for the 1st of their timeouts.
40:43As he'll talk it over here before what will be an important 3rd down.
40:57Coming up here looking for 3 yards to pick up the 1st.
41:01Herbert got a throw.
41:06And Allen's got it.
41:08And he's going to get out of bounds with the 1st down.
41:12So that's going to double their pleasure for sure.
41:14They get the 1st and save a timeout.
41:16Well, they got the yardage they needed there.
41:19Picked up the 1st down.
41:20Got out of bounds.
41:21How about the urgency that they have as well as to understand where they are in the field.
41:25Plenty of time and 2 timeouts still at their disposal.
41:291st and 10 here.
41:30Throwing.
41:32Herbert.
41:34Looking left side.
41:35And he's got a man.
41:37That's Harris.
41:38And he is out of bounds inside the 30.
41:42Just about every quarterback is trained to really look downfield first before you come back and make a nice safe throw.
41:48And in this case, that's exactly what he did.
41:50Found his running back.
41:52Let him create some space.
41:53And it turned out to be a nice play for the offense.
42:00Long to give.
42:01This is Harris.
42:03And he'll be a couple yards shy of the red zone here at the 22-yard line.
42:07Now the Chargers will use the 2nd of their timeouts.
42:12As they'll get a chance to talk it over after picking up the 1st down.
42:34Herbert.
42:37And he's got a man wide open.
42:40Complete.
42:41And he takes it in for a Charger touchdown.
42:46Vlad McConkie from 21 yards away.
42:50And the Chargers have taken a 4th quarter lead.
42:55And touchdown.
42:56And congratulations.
42:58And zero relaxation ahead of them, right?
43:01Way too much time on the clock for them to start celebrating.
43:04Part 1 is done.
43:05But now on the sideline, you can already see them scrambling down there.
43:08They're getting those defensive guys ready.
43:10Yes, you have to get those guys ready.
43:11And you also have to talk to your special teams guys.
43:14Make sure the kickoff is exactly what you want.
43:17And cover it well.
43:22Extra point up and good by Dicker.
43:24So it's now a 3-point game here in the closing stages.
43:27As a field goal now can only tie it.
43:2914.
43:3014.
43:3014.
43:3014.
43:3014.
43:3114.

45:28. . . .
45:30. . . .
45:32. . . .
45:34. . . . . .
45:36Aqui vem o segundo down.
45:43Mahomes to throw it.
45:46Lá de um caído por Reis.
45:48E ele é brought to the ground
45:50com outro primeiro down
45:51com o Chargers 39.
45:53Você tem o primeiro down.
45:55Get up to the line of scrimmage
45:56e espike it.
45:58First down.
46:00First of two
46:01at the 39-yard line.
46:03Final minute.
46:04One timeout remaining.
46:07First and ten.
46:15Mahomes.
46:17They'll be caught by Reis.
46:20The Chiefs quickly now
46:21going to use the last
46:22of their timeouts.
46:24As the clock will stop
46:26with an even 20 seconds
46:27left to go.
46:28Kansas City Chiefs.
46:30First down.
46:32First and ten
46:33in the 28-yard line.
46:41So here we go.
46:42Maybe the biggest kick
46:43of the game
46:43forthcoming.
46:45This to potentially
46:46send us to overtime.
46:49Butker's kick here
46:50is good.
46:52And that will tie
46:53this game here
46:54in the final minute
46:55of the play.
46:55So in the final minute
46:58they turn it over
46:58to their kicker
46:59to get him back
47:00to even
47:00and he does not
47:01disappoint.
47:02Brandon, do you think
47:02the pressure ever
47:03gets to this guy?
47:04Because I sure don't.
47:05That was pretty smooth
47:07right there.
47:07But I tell you
47:08he better not rest
47:09on his laurels
47:10because there's a good
47:10chance they may need
47:11him again
47:12if this game
47:13goes to overtime.
47:13This one
47:24all we could have
47:25asked for.
47:26All tied
47:27in the final minute
47:28as it kicks away
47:29here.
47:31And with time
47:32a factor here
47:33late
47:33he'll just take
47:34a knee
47:34and they'll start
47:35things out
47:36at the 25
47:37at their own
47:3735 yard line.
47:48Here's first
47:49and ten.
47:55Now Herbert
47:57short throw
47:59to Disley.
48:00Chargers
48:00going to use
48:01their third
48:02and final
48:02timeout
48:03as they'll
48:05stop the clock
48:05with 12 seconds
48:07to go
48:07in the football
48:08game.
48:10First and ten
48:12at the 49
48:12yard line.
48:21This offense
48:22cannot stop
48:23the clock
48:24now.
48:24No timeouts
48:25remaining
48:25as they come
48:27up here
48:27first down.
48:29They'll set up
48:30the screen
48:31to Hampton.
48:31So four quarters
48:39wasn't enough
48:40and we are
48:41off to overtime.

50:17. . .
50:25. . .
50:27fit the gaps the correct way because we're in overtime so it's not just physical tiredness out
50:33there right mentally are you still doing what you're supposed to do and they were up to the
50:37task on that play and certainly fatigue on both sides of the football first throw it over time
50:44for herbert short throw to disley and he's dropped just before the line to game four yard pickup
50:51leaves him with third and one not a big window to throw coverage wasn't too bad there yeah they
50:57had him under wraps pretty well but somehow able to muscle his way open and catch the ball and they're
51:02going with some extra beef up front they've got to have this one in overtime it's third and one
51:08and harris is not gonna get there we work defensively to stop him short fourth down now after a loss of
51:19two the temptation to go for it probably there always is especially in overtime gotta punt it
51:25though i think you're right yeah i think that you absolutely have to punt it away and trust your
51:29defense especially for a little field position here but you're so right about the temptation
51:33another way to satisfy that though line up in pump formation and fake it that's another way to get it
51:39it's going to be a 44 yard boot just a yard on the return as he's covered up quickly and it's chiefs
51:48football first and 10. kc's offense ready to take over well their defense did the job got off the
51:56field without giving up any points and now charles all they need here is a field goal and they get the
52:01victory yeah and this is the way i love overtime i'm one of those really really old school guys
52:06that like sudden death right from the beginning well we've got it now because any points wins the
52:12game on defense get a safety a pick six fumble return you can win it as well so i'm really
52:18looking forward to this series and see how both sides play and that play going absolutely nowhere as
52:25he's belted before he could get out of the backfield i think sometimes when you're trying to get after
52:30the quarterback maybe it's better to be lucky than great because i think on that one he's just
52:36trying to get upfield and rush to pass or instead to tackle for the loss landed right in his lap
52:41what can the homes do now with his overtime drive throwing it in traffic there and that's complete
52:53so it's a gain of 12 there on the reception and that'll bring up what looks to be a third in
53:00inches can't be more than a half a foot
53:02to throw it's mahomes
53:16and here in overtime that had the potential to be the definition of a game-changing interception
53:27but he couldn't find a way to pull it in and that's a disappointment there
53:31there's the chiefs punter now on for a very important punt here in overtime
53:38and here's a fair catch taken at about the 24-yard line
53:46so possession goes over here on the punt and out will come the offense as they take over
53:53herbert gonna lead up the chargers here first and 10 at their own 24
54:08that time on the run pass option when he decided to throw it not a quick little drop off he went
54:32downfield a bit reminiscent of a triple option quarterback in college because he faked it
54:36inside and instead of immediately throwing it out to the perimeter step back in the pocket
54:40to find a target downfield
54:42on the ground it's harris
54:46and a good run here as he'll run the waterway down to the 40-yard line
54:52i think they like this drive a little bit better there partner running games up and out
54:57picking up some of the slack because remember the last drive they went three and out
55:00the 40-yard line so now first and 10 in chiefs territory right at the 40
55:08herbert
55:10this one finds mcconkey and he gets his down inside the 35 before going out of bounds
55:20they like going to him in the slot he catches another one
55:24i think this comes under the heading of until they stop him why not go back to it he has something going really well
55:30great working relationship with the guy throwing the ball and they keep making the connection
55:34here's harris
55:42and he'll work it inside the 30 to the 29 yard line
55:47sometimes i get almost mesmerized watching these runners who have great vision you know
55:52those eyes that carry their feet to open spaces make people miss i just love watching those guys go to work
55:57first down and then go back to harris
56:11and able to remove one tackler but only gets this back to the line of scrimmage
56:16as usual the hallmark of a good run defense linebackers making plays near the line of scrimmage
56:22absolutely nowhere to run there
56:24each team's had it in overtime so next score wins
56:30here's second down
56:31and i know you with every carry especially in overtime you're just saying if you're that ball carrier
56:45hold on to the football
56:47hold on to it protect it but not necessarily settle it because you're trying to get to the end zone
56:51you're trying to end the game right here and i know the defensive guys poking clawing raking trying to knock the ball free and protect their end zone
56:59and now it all rests on the right foot of their kicker this to win it in overtime and the chiefs are going to signal for and be granted another timeout
57:12they'll be left with just one remaining here at o.t.
57:29for the chargers field goal a 36 yard attempt
57:34and he got it
57:38the kick is good in overtime he's able to split the uprights
57:43and this home crowd is in a frenzy as their guys have pulled it out of the end
57:49well partner you and i were excited for this one today and certainly had its moments some good execution
57:56at times by both of these offenses defenses both made some plays as well
58:01and always a joy to be up here in the booth next to you my friend
58:04yeah it's a privilege to be up here in the booth next to you as well
58:07thanks for taking the time and let's go ahead and get ready for our next one right
58:11i'll see you in the film room get that preparation started now
58:14so that'll do it for my partner charles davis
