00:00While we might not be having the best weather now, back in August, a team from Beacon House Events
00:06swapped clipboards for compost, getting their hands dirty in support of the local community.
00:12As part of their commitments, Beacon House Events joined forces with environmental charity Groundwork North East in Cumbria
00:19to give a local allotment a much-needed makeover.
00:22The project is to create small allotment sites and get local residents involved in growing vegetables and involved in physical activity.
00:37And also, we wanted to introduce members of the public to growing, but on a smaller scale,
00:43not throw them into a large allotment area where, for one reason or another, it would take them hours and hours to do any work on the site itself.
00:55So these, as on this site, are small raised beds, and they would take up maybe four raised beds, two of the tall ones and two short ones.
01:07And we are putting together a package where they would come on a Thursday, and one till 3.30, with support from ourselves,
01:17and we'll show them how to grow vegetables.
01:20We are doing this over the winter and the summer.
01:24As in the wintertime, we will be in the situation that you won't have a lot of growing on the site.
01:30So another part of it is we are involved in projects where we go to local community centres,
01:39invite people along who've been working on the site and other members of the general public,
01:44and we will cook vegetarian meals.
01:48So what we have grown on the site, or what the general public might grow on the site in the future,
01:54and we cook them a meal and show them how they can put them together and have a nice, healthy meal.
02:00So this project is in Redcrum, Cleveland and Middlesbrough,
02:05and what we are trying to do is look at areas where there might be areas of deprivation
02:12where the general public aren't doing any physical activity,
02:17or they aren't eating nice, healthy meals,
02:20and it's one of those projects to support that.
02:23So on this site, what we did was we had a day where we got a company called Beacon House,
02:31and they came along and they supported us in the form of physical activity.
02:38They were really successful in that we did the training first and they cracked on straight away
02:44to the point where I was literally finding them other jobs on the site.
02:49But they were fantastic.
02:53Now, Groundwork want to involve other organisations in this sort of project.
02:58Let's get started.
