00:00Luke here at the Outdoor Boys YouTube channel and I'm stranded in the wilderness of Alaska. For the last three days
00:04I've been solo camping in Alaska's rainforest. I've used float planes, canoes, and my own two feet in order to explore remote hot springs.
00:12But my plane was supposed to pick me up this morning and it didn't show up.
00:15I'm not sure how I'm gonna get home, but one thing's for sure, this is gonna be an interesting video.
00:30Are you interested?
00:44Hi, thank you guys.
01:00Let's go.
01:02Well, I'm all by myself now.
01:32I've got lots of different ammo, I've got slugs for bears, I've got birdshot, it's
01:46the nice thing about shotguns, they're versatile.
01:50There we go.
01:53Just gonna leave my gun case in the bushes, I'll get it on my way back.
01:57Well guys, welcome to the temperate rainforests of southeast Alaska.
02:01It rains over 270 days out of the year here.
02:05And we're about 45 miles north-northeast of Ketchkin, Alaska.
02:09Alright, we're gonna get truckin', got a long way to go.
02:14Look at this place, it's a cold jungle, everything is covered in moss.
02:33Look at the size of this log, this is crazy.
02:40Look at this!
02:41Look at this!
02:42Look at this!
02:47Look at this!
03:01Look at this!
03:12That's pretty cool.
03:14Well, this is the lake I was trying to find.
03:17Unfortunately, I'm on the wrong end of the lake.
03:20And it's a big lake.
03:21Sure is pretty.
03:22Hold on.
03:23There's a little something over there.
03:33Check it out, it's an old trolley.
03:37All the woods rotted away, but you can still see the metal frame.
03:48That is slick.
03:50You can see the trolley pretty good here.
03:52I think normally the water level is a little bit lower and you can walk out to that thing.
03:57But hey, I got a great view of the lake!
04:04Look at this!
04:13Looks a little beat up.
04:17National Forest Service left these canoes here for anybody to use.
04:20As long as you take care of them, put them back where you found them, everyone can enjoy them.
04:25It's a real great thing.
04:48You know what?
04:49Rain or no rain, this is still pretty cool.
04:51Look at this!
04:54There's a couple ducks right over there.
05:00I think I might go get them.
05:03Oh, there we go.
05:07Well, they didn't let me get close to them, but they're here and that's a good sign.
05:11If I get up early tomorrow morning, I think I might have a good chance at them.
05:15There we go.
05:16We got ourselves a nice little shelter.
05:18Gonna need it because I've already wet my pants.
05:32Well, this is a pretty slick little shelter.
05:33It was built in 1937, so it's almost 90 years old.
05:37Just made with logs and cedar shingles.
05:38Got a nice little shelf up here you can sleep on or use for storage.
05:44Look at the big old solid benches here.
05:45Look at the big old solid benches here.
05:47Got even a little bit of wood here I might be able to chop up.
05:50Well, this is a pretty cool spot, but I gotta get my tent set up.
05:51I am really wet and cold.
05:55I am really wet and cold.
06:08I am really wet and cold.
06:12Well, check this out.
06:33It's a volcanic hot spring.
06:35Look at all the steam coming off this water.
06:40Oh, that's warm.
06:47Let's see if we can jam this hole up.
06:52There we go.
06:53It's filling up with hot water pretty quick.
06:58Scalding hot right there.
07:01This right here must be the source.
07:05Woo.
07:06Yeah, that's boiling.
07:08This over here is just warm.
07:11You can see all the steam coming off the hillside.
07:13There's probably other hot springs popping out higher up there.
07:16Now there's a hose over there bringing hot water down the hill.
07:19We gotta figure out why it's not working.
07:22There we go.
07:26That's hot.
07:27Alright, so we got cold water there, boiling hot water there, and warm water flowing in here.
07:46And you can kind of use the three to adjust your temperature.
07:49Oh man, I want to jump in this right now.
07:52But it's getting dark and I'm getting hungry.
07:55And I need to give this some time to clean out the pool and get it nice and warm.
07:59That is so awesome.
08:04I think the only thing that could be more exciting than that is a hot meal.
08:08Oh, I am so hungry.
08:10These bratwursts are pre-cooked so you just want to warm them up really.
08:27Put a little bit of water in the bottom of the frying pan, bring it to a boil.
08:30By the time the water evaporates, the bratwurst is piping hot through and through.
08:43Oh, that's delicious.
08:45It's not fancy, but it's warm and it's quick.
08:48Two things I really appreciate right now.
08:52There you go.
09:00I'll tell you what guys, I am exhausted.
09:06I had to get up at 530 in the morning to catch my flight.
09:09Spent all day on a plane and then had to hurry as fast as I could to get here before sunset.
09:14Didn't even have time to eat lunch.
09:30Got my hot water bottle here.
09:35Check for leaks.
09:37Alright, looks good.
09:39Let's put that in there.
09:40Well, I got some bread flour with me and tomorrow morning I am going to eat hot fresh bread.
09:45So I am going to go ahead and mix up a little water with it.
09:47Give it a little mix.
09:48Let it sit overnight and it will be fermented and all ready to go tomorrow morning.
09:53Making fresh bread is one of my favorite things to eat on a camp out.
09:56I get people asking me all the time how you do it.
09:59I did an entire video on how to make campfire bread.
10:02It's really easy.
10:04Just going to hang it up on this clothesline so mice can't get at it.
10:08Well, I think I am ready to get out of these wet clothes.
10:14Alright.
10:18Well, the sun set about an hour ago and it's only 7.15.
10:22It is getting dark so early nowadays.
10:25I am just going to kind of hop into bed and eat some snacks and listen to an audio book.
10:31I have got a pumpkin pie infused Gouda cheese which is going to be kind of wild.
10:36I have got some chocolate covered hazelnuts, a wicked salami, fig cake and some pilot bread.
10:41So, yes, I am having an awesome time.
10:51Sun is just barely up and it's not raining so I think I should go do some duck hunting.
10:55Oh, yeah, these didn't dry out at all last night.
10:59This is not going to be fun.
11:10That flock of ducks is right back where they were yesterday.
11:13I am going to try to stalk them.
11:17Oh, there was about 15 ducks in that flock and they flew off before I even got half as close as I needed to be.
11:22But I am sure they are not the only duck on this lake.
11:28Mallard ducks actually have a language of sorts.
11:30There is a hey baby I am here call.
11:36There is that num num this is tasty call.
11:40There is the basic quack.
11:41Well, that duck came right into the call and I was able to close the distance with him pretty good.
11:57When I got closer I could tell he wasn't a mallard.
12:00He is some sort of diving duck and those usually don't taste as good as mallards.
12:03So, I am just going to kind of let that one go.
12:11I am just working my way up and down this river and around the lake just looking for sloughs and marshy spots.
12:34Oh, my legs.
12:41Oh, I spent about three hours paddling around looking for ducks.
12:46I didn't shoot any.
12:47And oh, I am tired and hungry.
12:50I think I am ready for breakfast.
13:03A little something to keep me warm while I cook.
13:11My, thanks.
13:12Nice.
13:13A little butter and honey in this jar.
13:16We are going to let that warm up.
13:35Pour some honey butter on that.
13:37Some fresh pan fried bread with honey butter and pork jowl bacon.
13:40all bacon. Few things in the world taste better than fresh homemade bread, smothered in melted
13:58butter and honey. I'll tell you what, the rain has eased up a little bit. I want to take advantage
14:03of that. I want to go get some firewood and bring it into the shelter so it can dry off a little
14:08bit and maybe, just maybe, I can build a fire tonight. If nothing else, cutting firewood
14:13will keep me warm.
14:15Look at that, there's water all the way through that log.
14:37There we go, got a nice pile of wet wood. It's mostly dry on the inside but it's so wet on the
14:57outside, it's going to take a lot of heat to get it dry so it can ignite. In order to get the fire
15:02started, I'm going to need to dry kindling and lots of it. And the problem is, where do you find it?
15:07All the branches and moss and grass here are just soaking wet. I got these two dry pieces of wood
15:13I found in the shelter, so I need to chop them down and make them into kindling and keep that
15:17kindling bone dry. Each dry piece of wood, I'm going to lay over here where it's nice and dry.
15:25Another great fire starter is charcoal, but this stuff's soaking wet, so we're going to dry it out.
15:42There you go, that works real good. Also use your stove to dry out other pieces of wood.
16:05I'm out of water. Luckily around here there is no short supply of water.
16:12If the water you're filtering out has a lot of sediment, it'll gum up your filter really quick.
16:20So I use the carrying case for my water filter to kind of do an initial screening.
16:27The carrying case will filter out all the sand and sticks and other things.
16:36I just hang up the dirty water and gravity pulls it through a filter,
16:40down the hose and fills up my water bottle.
16:43All right, let's go and pinch it off.
16:53Rumor has it there's brook trout in this lake and I haven't caught in a brook trout in a long time.
17:00I got my rod rigged up with a little fly. It's got a black leech with a gold bead on it.
17:04I don't know a ton about this lake, but most lakes like this in Alaska have leeches in it,
17:08and trout love to eat leeches.
17:11I think I want to bring a hot water bottle with me fishing,
17:15but I don't want to sit and wait for a pot to boil on my stove.
17:18I don't want to go.
17:22Woohoo!
17:24Yeah, that's toasty.
17:27Oh, that feels nice.
17:29Well, the fishing isn't going great. The rain's picking up and I am soaked to the bone. I think I might head back.
17:52I am soaking wet and very cold. My hot water bottle has lost its oomph.
18:10I think I need to do something to warm myself up and I got an idea.
18:16Oh, all right. Let's get warm. I'm starting to regret my idea.
18:21Oh!
18:29Okay, half of me is being boiled alive. Half of me is freezing to death.
18:34And there's just a little bit of sweet spot.
18:43Oh, okay.
18:46Oh, I think I've got the temperature dialed in pretty good.
18:50That hot water pipe is just a touch too hot.
18:53So I got a little bit of that warm waterfall coming in and mixing with it.
18:56Just perfect.
18:58Just perfect.
19:00Between the hiking and the canoeing, I'm a little bit sore.
19:04This is nice.
19:05Oh, I missed lunch and I'm a bit hungry. So I think I'm going to have a hot spring snack.
19:17So good.
19:32Oh, this is nice, but I'm starting to get overheated.
19:42A little lightheaded getting out of that hot water.
19:51I don't have any towels, so I'm just going to have to put on my clothes wet and dry out slowly.
20:03Honestly, I don't feel any wetter than I did before I got into the hot springs.
20:07But man, I'm a whole lot warmer.
20:09I'm starting to get hungry, so I am going to make a tin foil dinner.
20:12A little salt, pepper, a little pork jowl bacon on there.
20:25Green onion.
20:26And a whole bunch of cilantro.
20:28If you're doing this at home, use Italian sausage or kielbasa instead of bratwurst,
20:35and it's even better.
20:36But hey, you know, use what you got.
20:41Alrighty.
20:43Oh, I think the rain eased up.
20:45I'm going to make a fire.
20:46I better do it now.
20:53There we go.
20:59Even with the dry kindling, that fire isn't taking aggressively.
21:03There's so much humidity in the air.
21:09I put these wet pieces of wood up here so they can dry,
21:11but they'll also act as a roof if it starts to rain, which will protect the fire.
21:28I can hear it sizzling in there.
21:51It's so nice.
21:52Working the fire is drying my pants out.
21:55Look at that.
22:03There we go.
22:04I forgot to bring a fork, so I made some chopsticks.
22:06That is smelling like it's ready.
22:10There.
22:17That smells good.
22:18Oh, that's sweet potato is so good.
22:28Oh, that was good.
22:31The meat and the sweet potato.
22:32A little bit of salt.
22:34Man, that's good stuff.
22:36I think it's time to roast a marshmallow.
22:38Oh, that was good.
22:50Got some lemon pound cake here.
22:53A cup of hot chocolate with some cake for dessert.
22:55Not too shabby at all.
22:59I gotta tell you what, I'm feeling very fortunate right now.
23:02I've got a nice warm fire.
23:03The rain has been really light.
23:05I got a full belly.
23:06I think there's a really good chance I'm going to go to bed dry and warm.
23:11Really, the only thing I can complain about right now is that I've got two visitors.
23:16Oh, no, no.
23:18Get out of my cat.
23:20Don't get him.
23:20Get out of there.
23:21Get out of there.
23:22Okay, come on.
23:22Come on.
23:23Go this way, buddy.
23:35There's mice all over.
23:36Oh, mice can cause a lot of damage.
23:39Anything fuzzy, they want to steal it and take it to their nest.
23:42So they'll chew holes in your sleeping bag.
23:44They'll pull your hair out.
23:45They'll chew up your jackets.
23:47And of course, they can get into your food and ruin your food.
23:50Come here.
23:54Dude.
23:57That's a different one.
24:00He's a little fatter than the other one.
24:02I'm just going to try to clean up really well and get all my stuff off the ground so they don't chew it up.
24:08Sure, a mouse can still get to it if they want to, but at least I'm not making it easy.
24:14Hopefully, that'll keep my stuff away from the mice.
24:16Oh, these socks are so wet.
24:24And it feels so good to be warm and dry, but it's late.
24:28I've got to turn off the camera and I'll see you in the morning.
24:34Oh, good morning.
24:36I had this nightmare that I was rabbit hunting and I shot a rabbit.
24:39And when I got close and picked it up, it was someone's palm ring.
24:43Tell this old lady that I shot her dog and thought it was a rabbit.
24:51Oh, everything is so damp.
24:53You hang up your clothes and they do not dry at all.
24:56I've got an entire change of dry, clean clothes, but I'm saving it for the airplane ride home.
25:01Don't want to get the airplane all gross.
25:11Oh, it's raining good outside.
25:13It's going to be wet today.
25:14Oh, this plate is disgustingly dirty.
25:38Well, they're not exactly dry, but they're worlds better than yesterday.
25:51I'll tell you what, this has been a pretty cool little adventure, but I am ready to get out of the rain.
25:56I think it's time to head back to the beach.
25:58I've got a plane to catch.
26:00Oh, I'm going to get soaked.
26:08I don't want to get
26:33I'll be right back.
26:35oh there's a seal right there
26:41well i got a bit of bad news i just got a message from the pilot that they're weathered in at catch
26:54can and they can't come get me i don't know how bad the weather is i don't know how long it's
26:59going to last all i know is the pilot said he'd give me an update in two hours that's how it is
27:03here in alaska you have to bow to the weather the weather doesn't bow to you
27:07i need to get out of this rain i'm getting soaked
27:14oh it's good to get out of the rain i'm wet from the waist down and a little bit cold but at least
27:36i'm not in the rain anymore
27:37i get cold just sitting here but if i go out and walk around i get more wet
27:46so i've got to do little exercises under the tarp to try to stay warm
27:49i don't have any more cooking fuel and i don't have a ton of food left so
27:56just having a really simple lunch
27:58well the rain eased up and i got a message from the pilot they're still socked in and
28:05catch can so i'm not getting rescued anytime soon maybe in a couple hours or something will
28:10change or maybe i'll be stuck here for a day or two i'm using the break in the weather to
28:16walk around i'm freezing i'm just gonna walk up and down this beach until i'm warm
28:22barely got half a dozen laps done and it's starting to rain a little bit
28:28well it's been five hours
28:52and i just got a message from the pilot that they're gonna try to leave
