04:30As I cut away the sides, every so often the snow will settle and just go whoop.
04:48It's a nice little noise and scares the bejeebies out of me.

06:36Let's go.
06:38Let's go.
06:40I don't know.
07:10I don't know.
07:40This is a pretty cozy little shelter.
08:07I'll tell you what, that is a beautiful view.
08:21I've got room to sit down, cook, sleep, and this is perfect.
08:33And it only took me four hours to make this thing which is a lot less time than some of
08:37my other snow shelters.
08:39I don't know.
08:41I don't know.
08:43I don't know.
08:45I don't know.
09:09Oh, this smells so good.
09:11I don't know.
09:13I don't know.
09:15I don't know.
09:19I don't know.
09:23I don't know.
09:39I don't know.
09:41I don't know.
09:43I don't know.
09:45I don't know.
09:57I don't know.
09:59Oh, that was good.
10:09I don't know.
10:11I don't know.
10:13I don't know.
10:15I don't know.
10:17I don't know.
10:19I don't know.
10:35I don't know.
10:37Oh, my God.
11:07Check for leaks and put the hot water bottle up my sleeping bag. Get all nice
11:12and toasty. I'll tell you what this is just one of the best snow shelters I've
11:16ever made. There's a couple key features that are really important to keeping you
11:20warm. First off you don't want your sleeping area to be the lowest point in
11:24the shelter. The cold air tends to collect at the bottom. Another thing is
11:28you want to make sure your snow shelter has lots of corners. You don't want to
11:32allow the wind to blow straight into your snow shelter. Additionally when you
11:36do have a corner make a little extra room so when the wind comes down it goes
11:42past the door instead of being funneled into the door. Likewise on this end I've
11:49got two entrances so that if the wind blows crosswise the wind continues
11:53through the shelter instead of getting funneled down into the shelter. But I'm
11:57gonna get a chance to really test the shelter out. It's supposed to be a
11:59pretty good snowstorm tonight. We'll see what happens. Looks like I had some shit on
12:05my face. The snow here is really soft. Hopefully it'll freeze really good
12:11tonight. Then my stairs won't fall apart. The type and quality of the snow really
12:15affects how much energy it takes to build one of these shelters. This was really
12:20easy stuff to work with so things went really fast. I moved a lot of snow in just
12:25four hours. The inside of this shelter is about five feet wide and the roof is a
12:29little bit over six feet tall. So the very back of the shelter to the mouth is 11
12:35feet. I had to move about 230 cubic feet of snow to excavate this part of the
12:40shelter. So at the bottom of the entrance to the top of the snow berm it's a
12:44little over ten feet deep. But the original surface of the snow was about
12:47eight, eight and a half feet deep. The distance from here at the top of the
12:51stairs to the back of that wall is about 17 feet. Plus there's this little bit I
12:56excavated right here. So my rough estimate is that I had to move about 423 cubic
13:01feet of snow to build this shelter. A little over fifteen and a half cubic
13:05yards. That's the max capacity of a commercial dump truck. I earned my hot
13:11chocolate tonight.
13:17Well it is getting late and it's getting cold. Got some peanuts for a bedtime snack.
13:26Well it's getting late so I'm gonna go ahead and eat some peanuts and listen to an
13:33audiobook and go to bed. But tomorrow I'm gonna do something interesting. I'm gonna
13:38see what it takes to make this tunnel collapse. I know a lot of people have
13:42wondered whether or not these snow caves will fall down on you. And honestly I
13:46don't know. We'll test that out tomorrow. Oh good morning. I'm nice and warm. I gotta get up and make some breakfast.
13:55Oh look at this. Got a lot of snow last night. Oh yeah that's got to be at least a foot.
14:08Consequently the roof has sagged a little bit. It's about an inch or two
14:12shorter. I'm having to hunch over a lot more than I did last night. Snow caves
14:17will actually do that. They'll sag quite a bit over time. If you're gonna use
14:21them for more than one day often you have to re-dig out the roof. If you're a
14:24bit claustrophobic you can make it hard to sleep at night knowing that the
14:28roof is slowly sagging over your face.
14:31All right let's see if I get my pants on. Oh my pants are frozen.
14:54Steel cut oatmeal and sliced spam for breakfast.
15:01All right. This steel cut oatmeal is so good. Got some butter in there, brown sugar,
15:15raisins, a little hot spam to go with it.
15:26Ah it's not bad at all. All right well I'm gonna clean this place up and then we're
15:29gonna go explore outside. We got a lot of snow out there.
15:42All right let's go see what it's like outside.
15:44It's a proper little snowstorm up here. It is really snowing. All of this fresh
16:01snow is gonna make the avalanche danger go through the roof. Luckily we're not in
16:05any avalanche zone so we'll be okay. Above the ceiling right here the snow's pretty
16:09thick but yesterday I could see light shining through in that corner of the cave.
16:13Which means there's less than two feet of snow between the ceiling and the surface
16:16of the snow. You can kind of see what I mean right here. There's this blue color.
16:19That's light shining through the snow right here. You can see that's about two
16:24feet of snow. So I'm really curious to see whether this roof can stand up to 200
16:28pounds of me jumping up and down on it.
16:31I couldn't feel any movement. Yeah it looks perfectly fine from here. Well this one
16:58hasn't collapsed yet but all snow caves collapse eventually. All right I think
17:02it's time to get out of here.
17:08Oh look how deep this snow is. Even with my snowshoes it's going up to my kneecap.
17:13It's probably two and a half feet of fresh snow since yesterday. I got a sneaky
17:18suspicion that my car might be very stuck when I find it.
17:31I think I got some digging to do.
17:48Yeah we got a good solid two feet of snow. I've got about a hundred yards of
17:56unplowed road to go. It's going to be tricky.
18:00I've got absolutely no visibility. Don't need visibility unless we can drive somewhere.
18:17Hey not bad. I got like 75 feet with that. Let's dig it out and try it again.
18:36Try it again.
18:45More power!
18:51More power!
18:56Maximum power!
19:00So I'm going to take my snowshoes and beat a path to the plowed road.
19:19Oh that's a long way to go.
19:30I was giving it a bunch of throttle and it just popped on me.
19:37And I kind of smelled this burning smell.
19:39And now only two of the wheels are spinning.
19:41I think I boogered up the all wheel drive.
19:44Got a gentleman in a big 4x4 pickup who might be able to help get me out.
19:55That's pretty sick.
19:57Oh I'm about to go for a ride.
20:04Oh we're doing it.
20:15Alright man thank you.
20:16Yep thank you.
20:17Hey you too.
20:19That pickup truck was a monster.
20:21If it wasn't for that I would have been here for a long time.
20:24Oh it is nasty.
20:34Oh.
20:35Oh the car is smoking.
20:39I'm so glad you're home and safe.
20:40I was afraid of us.
20:41Yeah.
20:42Look at the car.
20:43It's smoking.
20:44Yeah.
20:45The car looks cleaner.
20:46Yeah it does doesn't it?
20:48Oh Betsy done good.
