00:00Luke here at the Outdoor Boys YouTube channel and I'm deep in the heart of the Alaskan wilderness.
00:04And for the next four days, I'm building my shelters, camping, catching my dinner, exploring glaciers, and having a great time.
00:11Come along for the ride. It's going to be a great video.
00:30And there goes my ride.
00:48Well, I'm going to leave the kayak here and go look for a campsite.
01:15I think the first thing I'm going to do is explore a little bit.
01:19Well, there's plenty of wood.
01:23Looks like a coyote's been walking up and down this beach.
01:29Keep finding tons of these little skeletons.
01:31They feel really light, like they belong to a bird.
01:37Little sea urchin.
01:40It's a fish jaw. Look at all those teeth.
01:45That's the top half of a beaver jaw.
01:48Look what I just found.
01:54Those are bear paw prints right there.
01:56Not sure what kind of bear it is, but this is where I want to build my campsite.
02:00Well, I walked about two miles of round trip down the beach looking for a spring or creek.
02:04Didn't find anything.
02:06I've got about four liters of water and that's enough for today and tomorrow.
02:09But probably not enough for all four days.
02:11But right now, I've got to focus on building a shelter.
02:14It's getting late.
02:15Have a great day.
02:22Okay.
02:24I'm going to go ahead and turn it over to the top of the top of the top of the top.
02:54And I'll cut out the pen and size of a flat.
03:06I can easily cut a bit.
03:10And then I'll cut it out.
03:16I know it's called the wrong other place.
03:21So, let's go.
03:51So, let's go.
04:21all right i got camp set up and not a moment too soon it's getting dark
04:29with the rocks behind the fire and the canvas behind me this is really toasty which is good
04:43because it's gotten chilly outside i could see my breath i knew i'd be getting to this spot kind
04:47of late so i packed a pretty simple meal i got some uh got some cured salami and i got some smoked
04:55salmon and pilot bread i caught some silver salmon a couple weeks ago and i smoked them up and then
05:00i mixed the smoked salmon in with brie honey walnuts and garlic
05:03for dessert i have chocolate covered macadamia nuts
05:12got myself some blisters right there and there
05:22it's late and i've got a lot to do tomorrow i'm gonna put up the camera
05:29hopefully we won't have any bears joining us tonight see you guys in the morning
05:33oh good morning it's cold outside
05:41oh that's gorgeous well before i get the fire started and i start cooking breakfast i think
05:52i want to complete the firing
06:06i need to find a couple perfectly shaped stones
06:34that one's promising
06:40that one's promising
06:46that
07:00I wouldn't mind another one of those.
07:30I'm sitting here finishing breakfast and I can see a flock of seagulls diving on baitfish
07:39right there.
07:43Maybe I need to rig up the rod.
08:02Checking my bait and I reeled in a flesh-eating starfish.
08:09I'm going to go put him back.
08:21That's an eagle feather, that's from a young bald eagle.
08:27Well the surf fishing wasn't really paying off and we've got a few hours before high
08:31tide so I'm hiking back to the kayak to see if we can go do some kayak fishing.
08:36While I'm at it I want to keep an eye out for a water source.
08:38I only got about a liter and a half of fresh water left so I've got to go look for water.
08:49Tell you what, I was just thinking I wish I had a hat.
08:52I hope there's not lice in it.
08:54Check out the bald eagle up there.
08:57Those are such a big bird.
09:02Alright, we got some water.
09:07That's brackish.
09:13There's definitely a fair amount of salt water in that.
09:15So this right here is a tidal river.
09:18It changes direction based on whether the tide is coming in or out.
09:21So I think I'm going to put my kayak in and catch a ride out into the bay.
09:25See if we can't catch some fish.
09:27I'm going to stop and do a little bit of lunch before I get on the kayak.
09:36I'm going to stop and do a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit.
09:55If we let the current take me down the river, we'll fish a little bit in the lagoon.
09:59When the tide switches, we'll catch the current back.
10:04Sure nice not having to paddle, but I'm hearing an ominous roaring noise down that direction.
10:09We got some pretty serious breakers here.
10:20But if I flip over in this, I'm going to go hypothermic immediately.
10:24I mean there's literally ice washing up on the beach.
10:27This water is so cold it hurts to put your hand in it.
10:30But I've been sitting here for a few minutes and I haven't seen any breakers off to the left.
10:34So I think that's the trick.
10:35Oh crap.
10:36Oh that was a lot crazier than I intended.
10:50I may not be going back that way.
10:55Well this iceberg is making crazy noises.
11:02It sounds like it's being deep fried.
11:04The ocean water is about 40-45 degrees and so it's substantially warmer than the ice.
11:09Oh that is cool.
11:12I want to see if I can catch myself a fish for dinner and usually the fishing is better
11:16when you're fishing underneath cliffs as opposed to beach.
11:21Oh hello.
11:26Liz.
11:27It's a little baby salmon.
11:30Oh.
11:31I think that's a little baby silver.
11:33Won't fill me up but he'll taste just fine.
11:36We'll keep him.
11:38Oh look at this.
11:41Kelp greenling.
11:43Nice little kelp greenling.
11:44Oh there we go.
11:46Oh little baby kelp greenling.
11:50Kelp greenling.
11:51Kelp greenling aren't horrible but I like other fish better and I think I'm going to catch something.
12:03Oh got something.
12:06Oh yeah.
12:07That is what we want.
12:12There we go.
12:13Look at that.
12:14Black bass.
12:15Where there's one of those there's usually more.
12:18Oh.
12:19Oh we got a big one.
12:20We got a nice fish.
12:22Oh.
12:23Look at that.
12:24I believe this is a copper rock fish.
12:29I'm going to go ahead and put him back.
12:32You're only allowed to keep one of those per day.
12:35Oh there we go.
12:38Oh another black bass.
12:40You're allowed three of these per day but I'm not going to eat both of these suckers.
12:45I got enough food.
12:46Oh there we go.
12:48Oh.
12:49Look at that beauty.
12:51What a feisty fish.
12:56Little puffin swimming right by me over there.
12:59Oh another black bass.
13:01I could have limited out.
13:04There we go.
13:09Another big black bass.
13:16Well the fishing's been pretty awesome.
13:18I've got dinner and I've lost count of how many fish I caught.
13:21But I'm getting thirsty and water's getting really low.
13:24I need to go find a source of drinking water.
13:35I am so glad to see this water.
13:41That is all the water we had left.
13:48This is the best water filter system.
13:50It just pulls it through with gravity.
13:56I got four liters of drinking water and three liters I can filter later.
14:00Oh that feels good to have water.
14:02I was stressing about that.
14:03Dang.
14:04Some of those waves are popping up six feet tall.
14:17I'm just going to porridge the kayak over this little spit of land over here.
14:21That way I can avoid all that craziness over there.
14:29There we go.
14:30We're back in the river.
14:31And we're rapidly moving the opposite direction we were a few hours ago.
14:35Man that current is ripping.
14:37If I were to stay on this river it would take me to a lake full of icebergs.
14:41And an enormous glacier that's calving into the lake.
14:44I really want to go see that.
14:46But that will have to wait for tomorrow.
14:48Oh son of a god.
15:06Well that wasn't great.
15:12Well there we go.
15:13We caught dinner and survived to tell the tale.
15:18It was a little cold last night and it's supposed to get even colder as the week goes on.
15:28So I'm going to bust out my stove.
15:48Alright I think it's time to cook some fish.
16:05And a little bit of maple syrup.
16:09There we go.
16:10Put it in the smoke but out of the heat.
16:18Got a little bread flour in the east here.
16:24Walking miles on those rocks with these boots has just been killing my feet.
16:47That is some beautiful fillets.
16:48That is killing my feet.
16:49right there.
16:50That is some beautiful fillets right there.
16:51That is some beautiful fillets right there.
17:17A little pepper.
17:18Smoked paprika.
17:19Ticket and mole here.
17:20Ticket and mole here.
17:24There we go.
17:25There we go.
17:26You got chicken and mole.
17:27Chicken and mole here.
17:28Chicken and mole here.
17:29Chicken and mole here.
17:33Green hatch chilies.
17:34And lots of rockfish.
17:36Some salsa.
17:37Rockfish is such a firm white meat.
17:38mmm.
17:39Rockfish is such a firm white meat.
17:41Mmm.
17:42That's good.
17:43That's right.
17:44You got chicken and mole here.
17:45That's good.
17:46We got chicken and mole.
17:47Green hatch chilies.
17:48And lots of rockfish.
17:49Some salsa.
18:05Broncfish is such a firm white meat.
18:08Really good.
18:17Oh, that was good.
18:26For dessert, I'm going to finish off my bread with a little bit of honey.
18:30I don't know what it is, but there are a few things better than warm bread and honey.
18:35Mmm, that was good.
18:46I will see you guys in the morning.
18:50Good morning.
18:57Putting this stove in last night was the best idea ever.
19:01It's so toasty in here.
19:03Oh, pancakes are hard to beat.
19:07oh pancakes are hard to beat i guess technically this is breakfast in bed
19:35there you go my smoked salmon's done
19:58it's tiny but good
20:04well despite the weather i really want to go see that glacier
20:09this is a bald eagle's footprint look at the size comparison to my hand
20:18from one town to the other that's probably eight inches
20:22oh darn i missed the tide it's heading the wrong way
20:29i might be able to get up against the current we'll see
20:32in the middle of the river the current's moving faster than i can paddle
20:41but maybe if i stick to the sides i can sneak upstream
20:45oh my hands are so cold all right check out that eagle
21:00a bunch of pink salmon right there
21:07look at that
21:08i think i made it to the lake that feeds the river
21:15now it's hard to see with all this fog but there's an enormous glacier falling into this lake somewhere over there i just gotta see if i can find a way through all this ice
21:30oh that'll buff out i gotta be careful going in between these icebergs
21:36some of these weigh more than buildings and as the tide goes up and down they're
21:40going to shift and move around this clear water can disappear or worse yet you can get
21:45squished in between two big icebergs
22:08place is just full of seals and sea otters i've seen like 20 of them
22:15this ice pack goes on forever
22:26ice that comes from the bottom of the glacier is super compressed and has that really cool blue color
22:34the fog lifted and i can see the face of the glacier the tide switches in about an hour and a half
22:40and it's taken me three hours to get here so i better get heading back
22:45to something else
22:46I am sorry if i wanna get going
22:47this is the question i might just check out about the glacier
23:11I know I'm hungry when I'm double-fisting it.
23:24Oh, that kayaking wore me out.
23:26That was about five hours.
23:33Well, it's almost dinner time,
23:40and I got some bread dough left over,
23:42so I think I'm going to make a bushcraft bread oven.
24:03We've got the oven stuffed full of wood.
24:05We've got the dough rising in the pot.
24:10Just stick it over here and let it rest.
24:31Aha!
24:32There we go.
24:33Oh, is there anything better than warm, fresh bread?
24:39Yes!
24:39Warm, fresh bread with honey butter!
24:41Oh.
24:51That is so good.
24:53Oh, the crust is so crispy on this thing.
24:56Oh, I'm getting so full.
25:04I've got a belly full of warm bread,
25:06and it's nice and cozy in here.
25:08I'm going to just kind of take it easy.
25:10I'm sore after all that kayaking.
25:12There we go.
25:34Nice little wooden spoon.
25:36Well, I think I made a little bit of a mess here.
25:52It's been a fun, relaxing evening,
25:54but I've got to get to bed.
25:55I've got to get up early in the morning.
25:57I'll see you guys then.
25:58Oh, good morning.
26:05I've got to hurry up and get packed.
26:28I hate packing up in the rain.
26:34All of my gear is soaked and dirty.
26:52Now I've just got to wait for my ride.
26:55Look at that.
26:55There's a whole bunch of seals right out there
26:57trying to catch pink salmon.
26:59Oh, there's my boat.
27:08Whoa.
27:09I don't need my shower for the month now.
