00:00Prison officer Lenny Scott has just left his gym in Skelmersdale, Lancashire, on a Thursday evening in February last year.
00:09A masked gunman approaches him and shoots him six times in the head and body.
00:15Lenny Scott was a 33-year-old father of three who worked at Altcourse Prison in Liverpool.
00:22Lenny was an amazing man. He had a great sense of humour, great principles. He was a fantastic dad and a lovely son.
00:38He was full of banter, full of ideas of what he wanted to do in his future with him and the children.
00:52The man who murdered him is a former prisoner of HMP Altcourse, 35-year-old Elias Morgan.
00:59Today, he was sentenced at Preston Crown Court to life in prison.
01:03You have been used to getting your own way by threats and violence, evidence of which was heard by the jury.
01:10So that when the deceased wouldn't do what you wanted, he was to be punished by you.
01:16Why did it take almost four years?
01:18It was because you told the deceased you would take your time.
01:22Also, you were about to face a trial arising from the evidence revealed by that mobile phone.
01:28In 2020, Mr Scott reported an illicit mobile phone found in Morgan's cell.
01:35The confiscated phone exposed Morgan's illegal relationship with a female prison officer.
01:40Morgan threatened Mr Scott, telling him he would bide his time, but he would get him.
01:46Mr Scott was sufficiently concerned by these threats to call the emergency services.
01:50Mr Scott's parents, Neil and Paula, said they believed Altcourse managers did not treat those threats seriously.
02:20And it was that fact, I think, for him, the fact that his personal details.
02:27To be able to describe the children, give instances of how they were being followed, that really affected them.
02:36Elias Morgan was on bail for possession of the mobile phone in 2024.
02:41He drove around Skelmersdale, checking on locations that Mr Scott frequented.
02:47On February 8th, he travelled to the gym that he knew Mr Scott would be attending, and killed him.
02:53It is one of the most callous, brutal and inhumane things I have ever seen in my 30 years as a police officer.
02:59He gave Lenny no quarter.
03:02Lenny Scott was a family man, first and foremost.
03:05Lenny Scott was a beloved only son and dad of three wonderful young children, and to whom he was devoted.
03:12A man of integrity, a man who during his service at H&P Altcourse did the right thing in challenging circumstances.
03:20It was this that cost him his life.
03:22Lenny Scott's heartbroken family now face a future without their beloved son, partner and father.
03:28It should never have happened. Lenny should still be here.
03:33We just need to move on from this, but we'll never move on from Lenny.
03:40Elias Morgan will serve at least 45 years behind bars.
