During a "Fight Oligarchy" rally in Portland, Maine on Monday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) spoke about ownership of major media platforms by billionaires.
Transcript
00:00they own the media. Not an accident Elon Musk owns Twitter. Not an accident that Mark Zuckerberg
00:08owns Meta, which controls Facebook and Instagram. Not an accident that Jeff Bezos owns the Washington
00:19Post and Twitch. Not an accident that Mr. Ellison recently bought Paramount, which will
00:27give him ownership of CBS. Not an accident that Rupert Murdoch owns Fox, the Wall Street Journal,
00:37the New York Post and right wing publications all across this country. So what I am saying
00:44to you, brothers and sisters, you are living, we are living in a society where the people
00:51on top have unbelievable power over the economy, over the political system, over the media,
01:00and over us. And it is time that we say very loudly and clearly that millions of people fought
01:10and died to create a government that works for all, not just the 1%. And let me tell you
01:39a story, if I might, which I think epitomizes kind of where we are. I'm on the Veterans Committee
01:50and I take very seriously the need to make sure that our veterans get all of the health
01:54care and the other benefits that they are entitled to. And I go around, when I go around
02:04Vermont, I often meet veterans and I say, you know, you're entitled to this program, a lot
02:07of good VA programs out there. And often it's not. And I'm sure it's the same in Maine. People
02:13will say to me, Bernie, I know that, you know, but you know what? There are other veterans that
02:17are worse off than I am. I'm okay. I don't need the program. Make sure other people get
02:21that human reaction says that as a human being, we can't do it alone. We are part of all that I have
02:41got to care about your families. Your families have got to care about my family. We are in this together.
02:49But I will tell you, and I tell you with some knowledge because I deal with these guys every day. These
03:11oligarchs lack that sense of humanity, that sense of empathy. I don't mean to, you know, I don't like to attack
03:22people in a personal way. But what I will tell you is their goal, these are very smart people. They work very hard.
03:29But they believe that they are entitled. And I say this sincerely, you know, way back when we studied
03:37history as kids, remember what the American Revolution was about? It was taking on the divine rights of
03:42kings. Throughout Europe, you had all these guys, God gave me all of this money and all of this power. It was God
03:49given. These guys, trust me, believe that they have the right to rule and democracy is an impediment to
03:59their success. They want it all. They want it all. And they don't care who they step on in order to get
04:12even more and more.
