00:17Thomas y Gavalleros, de la zona norte, Tijuana, Mexico, the three-time world champion, Eric El Terrible Morale.
00:36And his opponent across the ring, fighting out of the blue corner, wearing red with flames, official weight 129 and one-half pounds, professional record 39 victories, including 30 knockouts with only two defeats and two bouts even.
01:03From General Santos City, the Philippines, the three-time champion of the world, Manny Pacquiao.
01:33All right, gentlemen, we went over the rules in the dressing room.
01:39I expect a good, clean fight.
01:41Getting up at Olympia.
01:42You're a little like a Merino.
01:45Trunks here.
01:46It's a little high.
01:48Yours a little high, too.
01:49Punches here are still good.
01:50They're going up at Olympia.
01:51I want a good, clean fight.
01:52Remember, guys, I'm fair, but I'm firm.
01:54Touch him up.
01:55They say that what happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas.
02:02Happily, this one is for everyone, everywhere.
02:05Round one begins.
02:17Eric Morales says that he watched tapes of Manny Pacquiao's fight with Juan Manuel Marquez last year eight different times.
02:25Let's see if that's properly prepared him for the speed and left-hand power of Pacquiao, which have been devastating and shocking to many opponents in the first round.
02:34For his part, Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, says he's been too left-hand dominant to beat Morales.
02:40He'll have to use his lead hand, his right hand, more and better.
02:44Pacquiao gets in the first little punch of the fight, a quick jab.
02:48Well, with Morales, if he watched the fights with Manuel Marquez, he knows that his best out is to take Pacquiao in that deep water.
02:55Because he came out and blew Marquez way by the way, but Marquez was able to bring himself back into the fight in the late rounds.
03:01And that's where Eric was looking to do more than likely.
03:04Clearly, Pacquiao has respect for Morales, whom he has not assaulted as freely and openly as he did Marquez and Barrera in the opening seconds of the fight.
03:19And Morales starts out with a right hand to the body that just missed.
03:23Pacquiao got that left hand in down the chute, but nowhere near the same shocking power that he demonstrated against Marquez.
03:30Pacquiao trying to get to the body.
03:46Morales pushes him back.
03:47Both fighters focusing on the body early, but now Pacquiao lands his left-hand right.
03:55And again, and the blinding speed of Pacquiao's apparent, and Morales takes him across the right.
04:01And says, let's fight, and fires a right hand to the body after landing two upstairs.
04:07One thing about it, Morales in his game, he's here to fight.
04:10Like so many great fighters, if you come close to hurting Eric Morales, he's coming right at you.
04:20He wants to come back right away.
04:22Another hard left hand, partially blocked, but doing damage anyway.
04:43Morales very wary about Pacquiao's left-hand power.
04:46Pacquiao doing some good work to the body, which we haven't always seen him do.
04:55And he lands a right hand upstairs.
04:56And he lands a right hand upstairs.
04:57Morales is hurt.
04:58His body is hurt.
05:00Hurt and hurt around his body.
05:02Really bad.
05:03So the power is showing up as Morales wobbles away and then turns around and fires a combination to pin Pacquiao back against the ropes.
05:12And already in round one, we see the seesaw action that everybody anticipated.
05:20Talk about living up to expectations.
05:28Total in round one, Morales 17 out of 48, Pacquiao 19 out of 83.
05:33So Pacquiao throwing more freely, Morales a little bit more self-protective,
05:37but nevertheless able to pick his spots and do almost as much damage as Manny did.
05:44Another left hand lands for Pacquiao.
05:46The speed is still there.
05:47Well, this looks like he's virtually conceded that he's in with the quicker fighter and he wants to counter-punch,
06:08except when he can get him on the ropes.
06:10Now he takes the lead.
06:18And Morales lands upstairs after having focused mostly in the body up to that point.
06:24Pacquiao holds his hands out as if to say, you can't hurt me.
06:28Two hard right hand jabs for Manny Pacquiao.
06:31His promoters and publicists have been trumpeting a weapon called Manila Ice,
06:38and it becomes clear that Manila Ice is supposed to be the right hand.
06:42Maybe a hook, maybe an uppercut.
06:43We'll see.
06:44It's the left hand that opponents worry about.
06:47That was a good right hand fighting shot by here at Morales.
06:49He has a great right hand counter upstairs as Pacquiao dropped his hands.
06:53Yeah, if Morales fights this fight like this, he's going to be okay just as he not get caught with the big punches.
06:57Morales is disciplining himself to keep his activity level down,
07:02try to limit Pacquiao's chances,
07:05and keep it a boxing match rather than an all-out look.
07:08And that was a big enough hand by Pacquiao.
07:10But that was a good right hand body shot by Morales that drove him back.
07:22You know what I got to like about Morales here is he's fighting at a big guy's pace.
07:27And that's a tough pace to fight at this Pacquiao,
07:29but if he can survive, then he'll be okay because he won't tire as quick as Pacquiao wheel.
07:34Especially if he keeps landing that right to the body like he's doing.
07:37And Morales starting to put the straight right hand into play more often.
07:40It becomes apparent early on that part of Morales' strategy
07:44is to funnel the straight right hand to the body
07:46and look for opportunities to counter upstairs.
07:48And to not get himself in harm's way of Pacquiao's straight left hand.
07:54Take him to the deep water like that.
07:56Just took the left hand there, and it drove Morales back into the ropes.
07:59Okay.
08:09Good right-hand uppercut by Morales.
08:11Morales is, in a sense, trying to impose his size on Pacquiao.
08:19He is the bigger guy.
08:22Good hard right hand by Morales.
08:24Pacquiao comes on with the left.
08:26And Manny grinning wildly as he goes back to the corner at the end of two.
08:33But unlike both Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez,
08:39Morales has gotten through the storm of the first two rounds
08:41without tasting the canvas.
08:43.
08:59Come on!
09:00Come on!
09:01.
09:06.
09:08Come on!
09:12.
09:12.
09:42Look ahead, look ahead.
10:12Look ahead.
10:42Look ahead, look ahead.
11:12Look ahead, look ahead.
11:43How could you take Eric Morales lightly?
11:45That's not possible.
11:46What I think he's saying is that you're not supposed to go out here and try to run over
11:49him like he's a chump.
11:50Are you going to wear yourself out and he's still going to have energy left?
11:53In round three, Morales, 23 out of 60, brilliant tactical round.
11:58Pacquiao, 19 out of 84.
12:00Morales, 11 out of 33 cans.
12:02Harold, how do you have it so far?
12:03Okay, Jim, two rounds to one, 29, 28, Eric Morales.
12:09I gave him rounds two and three, Jim.
12:11I got to tell you something.
12:12If Eric Morales keeps his cool and keeps him on the end of that jab, he seems to be doing
12:16very, very well.
12:18Beautiful ring generalship.
12:19But the minute Manny Pacquiao tears into him, Morales loses everything.
12:23He goes totally nuts and he just starts throwing wildly and Pacquiao gets the best of him.
12:28In any case, 2-1 Morales.
12:31I have it, 2-1 for Pacquiao.
12:33The third round is a very close round I gave to Pacquiao.
12:37But, you know, you can't change Morales.
12:39He's had a lot of success with the style that he fights in.
12:43And this is what he does.
12:45He's not going to fight a perfectly disciplined boxers fight.
12:48Hard left hand by Pacquiao.
12:50Morales with a hard right hand coming back.
12:53And I think it's clear right now.
12:55Manny Pacquiao isn't going to deck Eric Morales with one big shot.
12:59No, he's not.
13:00And I'll tell you something else.
13:01It's also clear that if Eric Morales continues to go with that right hand to the body,
13:05it's going to be a long night for Pacquiao.
13:07Now Pacquiao gets more accurate as he pops Morales with short punches from close range.
13:12But he's showing signs of fatigue already, Jim,
13:14because he's throwing a lot of punches in this fight already.
13:16He's not fighting the pace he wants to fight.
13:18Eric is making him fight a different pace and he's beating that body.
13:20That's very smart, like I talked about in the first fight.
13:23A professional knows how to go up and down and that's what Eric's doing right now.
13:26And already some of the sting is out of Pacquiao's punches.
13:28You're seeing arm punches.
13:30You're seeing him push the left hand from time to time.
13:32Eric Morales is taking some of the sacks out of Manny Pacquiao.
13:36But Pacquiao is still dangerous.
13:38He will not get overconfident in him.
13:39But all the zap is just about gone.
13:41His confidence is being bothered because Eric is doing things to him
13:44to humiliate him in front of his crowd.
13:46Well, I think that's an overstatement, Roy.
13:50You know, it's a long way to go in the fight.
13:54I think, in part, what's going on here is...
13:57You ain't never boxed before.
14:00You got to know boxing and know this and see what's happening here.
14:02You have a box before, you know what I'm talking about.
14:04And that is not an overstatement.
14:05We can disagree, Roy, without having to pull the rank.
14:09Hard left hand by Pacquiao.
14:11Game Morales takes it pretty well.
14:13I just think that we're being caught up a little bit
14:19in the expectations that Pacquiao was going to come out
14:23and tear into Morales and do some serious damage.
14:27That doesn't mean he's still not doing well.
14:29Yeah, he's doing well.
14:30I'm not saying he's not doing well.
14:31I'm saying he's in a bad spot right now for him.
14:34We'll see how it all plays out.
14:36And that's a great discussion you guys are having.
14:38The only thing I'll say about it is
14:42I think Morales won the third round.
14:44And I think he won the fourth as well.
14:47But both guys did damage in that round.
14:49Beautiful punch.
14:53Jabs through round four.
14:55According to CompuBox, Morales 31 out of 103.
14:57Pacquiao's thrown more.
14:59123, but he's only landed five.
15:02Interesting because when we measured their arms
15:04from the armpit to the end of the fist,
15:06Pacquiao had the longer arms.
15:08But it's Morales who's making his jab a factor.
15:12Well, either one of these guys can land a shot
15:14that can put the other guy out, like Larry's saying.
15:16But Morales is in the best position right now
15:18because this is the fight he wants.
15:20This is how Marquez came back and did so well
15:23against Pacquiao after being almost shut out.
15:30Now, what Marquez was able to do
15:32was sort of use Pacquiao's relentlessness against him.
15:35And that's what Morales watched,
15:36and that's what he's trying to do.
15:39Hard left hand by Pacquiao.
15:41Right down the pipe.
15:44But again, Morales is taking these punches well.
15:48Better than most previous Pacquiao opponents.
15:50Action fight into the fifth.
16:03As long as Pacquiao can keep the fight
16:05in the middle of the ring,
16:07his quick hands have the advantage.
16:08Definitely.
16:09Good luck hook by Morales.
16:23Inside.
16:24Pacquiao never saw it coming.
16:25There's another left hook he didn't see.
16:27There's a right uppercut that landed, too.
16:29Pacquiao's doing some damage.
16:31Morales is landing the higher quality touch
16:33because he's picking his spots.
16:35Somebody is bleeding.
16:36It's not Morales.
16:37It's Pacquiao, who's bleeding from his right eye.
16:40Big time.
16:41And if that was off of Morales' left hook,
16:43or maybe a headbutt.
16:45All right, time.
16:46Time.
16:47Doctor is going to have to look at Pacquiao.
16:49It's hit by a punch.
17:03Indeed, Nevada State Athletic Commission
17:05Executive Director Mark Ratner
17:06holds up the sign that says
17:08this cut was caused by a punch.
17:10Eric Morales' left hook
17:12well-placed inside.
17:13Pacquiao's clientele obviously worried
17:34as this takes a long time to evaluate.
17:37I don't understand why
17:49this is taking so much time.
17:52I don't understand why the doctor came in the ring.
17:54I thought the guy was supposed to go to the corner,
17:56and the doctor was supposed to operate
17:57over the ring rope.
17:58Exactly.
17:58Instead of stepping all the way into the ring
18:00and walking around,
18:01that was very unusual.
18:03Dr. Margaret Goodman,
18:04who is the chief medical officer here,
18:08is not on this fight.
18:13Pacquiao seems a little bit wary
18:15and off-stride right now.
18:17He's not throwing.
18:20And Morales once again
18:22getting an opportunity to control,
18:24but now Pacquiao comes back
18:25and lands a combination.
18:29Left hook by Morales again.
18:31Sent Pacquiao reeling into the ropes.
18:33That jab right there
18:34is going to be a big factor for Morales.
18:36He starts jabbing,
18:37it's going to be a hard night for Pacquiao.
18:39And Pacquiao stuffs the left hand
18:40right into Morales' mouth,
18:42and Eric just looks at it
18:43as if to say,
18:45I'm a bigger man.
18:46You're fighting at 130.
18:48Welcome to my neighborhood.
18:56The fud encircles
18:58Manny Pacquiao's right eye
18:59as we follow Pacquiao to his corner.
19:02The cut man is Lenny DeJesus.
19:06Freddie Roach has also been known
19:08to work with the cut,
19:09but it's DeJesus who's going to reach in.
19:11Calm down.
19:12Calm down.
19:13Calm down.
19:14Calm down.
19:14Calm down.
19:19Wait.
19:20Give me the Vaseline.
19:21Give me the Vaseline.
19:22Vaseline.
19:22Give me the Vaseline.
19:24What is it?
19:24What is it?
19:25What is it?
19:26What is it?
19:26Deep breath, son.
19:27All right.
19:28Deep breath.
19:29All right.
19:29Now, here.
19:31You get it from KDT, this guy, okay?
19:33All right.
19:33Back him up.
19:34You're a combination.
19:35You heard him.
19:35Right here, we're looking to see what happens.
19:37We see Eric through a left, a right.
19:39Bam.
19:40That's a hit, but that probably caused the butt.
19:41Absolutely.
19:42And a hook came out,
19:42but I think the hit,
19:43but is what caused the gas.
19:45It makes all the sense in the world.
19:46Yeah.
19:46It would be interesting to see if the Nevada State Athletic Commission changes their opinion.
19:52I don't think they'll do that, but.
19:54It means it's not good.
19:57We see it again.
20:00I know.
20:00I know.
20:02I know.
20:11I know.
20:13I know.
20:15I know.
20:16I know.
20:16I know.
20:17Number one, number one, number one, number one!
20:47colourful by Maggie!
21:03Thank you, thank you, thank you.
22:43Oh, oh, oh.
22:44Drama.
22:45Time.
22:46All right.
22:47Do it.
22:48All right, time in.
22:49All right, let's put the drama in context.
22:50First of all, Harold, how do you have it through six?
22:52Okay, Jim, there's a couple of things I want to go over.
22:54Fifty-eight, fifty-six, four rounds to two, Eric Morales.
22:58Number one, in round five, you had a long delay while the doctor looked at that part.
23:02The big judge will make a note of what happened early in the round so that he doesn't forget.
23:08And early in the round, there's no question that Pacquiao was winning.
23:12Okay, that's number one.
23:13Number two, under the rules of the association of boxing divisions, only the referee can stop
23:18the fight.
23:19Only the referee can make the decision whether it's a butt or a punch.
23:23If Joe Cortez didn't see that butt, it's a punch.
23:27If this fight gets stopped, Morales wins by TKO.
23:30Well, we don't have instant replay, but we should in a case like this.
23:36We have it as televisors.
23:38We don't have it in our sport.
23:44I have to fight even at three rounds apiece.
23:46Pacquiao's coming out a lot stronger this round than they have in the previous two rounds, I mean.
23:51So, he may have found some.
23:55Pacquiao may have determined that he's able to fight with his eye in that shape,
23:58and that rekindles some of his will.
24:00Gives him the energy that he's shown in the early part of the round here.
24:03He's definitely won the first half of this round.
24:08Now Morales starts to counter and momentarily wobbles Pacquiao with an inside right hand.
24:13My gosh, they're trading some strong punches, too.
24:16All right, come on, come on.
24:17They are trading some very good punches.
24:20Right hand over the top by Morales.
24:22Right hands to the body.
24:24Oh, right hand.
24:25Pacquiao lands a sizzling left.
24:26Pacquiao with a four-punch, combinates it.
24:29Definitely has the quicker hands.
24:31Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
24:35Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go.
24:38Come on, get up, get up.
24:40Bring it up, bring it up, come on, bring it up.
24:42Great body shot by Morales.
24:43That's what he needs to do the whole fight right there.
24:45Get him out, get him out, bring it up, bring it up.
24:47Let's go.
24:48Got one in just under the belt line.
24:49Cortez let him have it.
24:50Oh.
24:51Great right hand lead.
24:52Oh.
24:53Robles Pacquiao again.
24:54Well Pacquiao took that punch very good, though.
24:55You know, Morales has never been a big puncher, Roy.
24:56Nope.
24:57That was a good shot.
24:58He'll just beat you down.
24:59He's a willful guy, that's for sure, as he hammers that right hand down the chute and
25:03goes back to the potty with a vicious shot that all but doubled Pacquiao over.
25:06Yeah, that hands hurt real bad.
25:07Great shot.
25:08Oh, my goodness, good body shot.
25:09Oh, my goodness, good body shot.
25:10Oh, my goodness, good body shot.
25:11Got one in just under the belt line.
25:12Cortez let him have it.
25:13Oh.
25:14Great right hand lead.
25:15Oh.
25:16Robles Pacquiao again.
25:17Well, Pacquiao took that punch very good, though.
25:18You know, Morales has never been a big puncher, Roy.
25:19Nope.
25:20That was a good shot.
25:21He just beat you down.
25:22But all but doubled Pacquiao over.
25:23Yeah, that hands hurt real bad.
25:25Great left hand by Morales.
25:27Stops Pacquiao on his back.
25:29Right hand wobbles him again.
25:31Morales senses a dance.
25:32Pacquiao comes back.
25:37Got to be careful about letting your hands go against Pacquiao.
25:40But Morales feels strong now.
25:42What a brilliant round.
25:44What a brilliant round.
25:45Oh, man.
25:46Oh, man.
25:47Oh, man.
25:48Oh, man.
25:49Oh, man.
25:50Oh, man.
25:51Oh, man.
25:52Oh, man.
25:53Oh, man.
25:54Oh, man.
25:55Oh, man.
25:56Oh, man.
25:57Oh, man.
25:58Oh, man.
25:59Oh, man.
26:00Oh, man.
26:01Oh, man.
26:02Oh, man.
26:03Oh, man.
26:04Oh, man.
26:05Oh, man.
26:06Oh, man.
26:07Oh, man.
26:08Oh, man.
26:10Oh, man.
26:11Oh, man.
26:12Oh, man.
26:13Perfect, thank you.
29:47in round 5, Morales 83 out of 208 for 40%, Pacquiao 53 out of 245 for 22%.
29:55Only makes sense that Pacquiao, as he becomes a little more desperate,
29:59might not land at that higher rate.
30:03I just wanted to recover that territory.
30:08It was Pacquiao who wanted to punch his gloves, which he's always used.
30:12Morales didn't.
30:14And Pacquiao's promoter was snookered into agreeing to use Morales' gloves
30:23in the contract for this fight.
30:26Well, of course, the fascinating reversal therein, then,
30:29is that Pacquiao the Filipino wanted to wear Mexican gloves,
30:32and Morales wound up tricking him into wearing Asian gloves.
30:35We've taken as many punches and as clean shots as they have been taking
30:39and landing tonight. It really doesn't matter.
30:41I don't care what kind of gloves they got on.
30:43It would be a bloodbath regardless, and it would be just like it's happening right now.
30:47All right, right hand by Pacquiao. Joe Morales back.
30:50Eric Morales is hurt right now.
30:52Manny Pacquiao finally got in that big punch he's been looking for.
30:56But does he have the energy to finish it? Because he did have a good shot.
31:00He got another one in there. Another left hand.
31:02And now Morales goes forward.
31:04Eric Morales can't stand to be hurt. He has to go back at his guy.
31:09That's a true, that's two true warriors in here.
31:14All right, stop, stop.
31:19And Pacquiao just doesn't stop.
31:21Pacquiao lands another straight left hand.
31:23Morales instantly tries to come back again.
31:37This has turned into a good round for Manny Pacquiao, partially because Morales is affording him opportunities.
31:43Let him keep coming first, and he is not going to stop coming.
31:48Now Morales wants his moment.
31:51Drives Pacquiao back with a jab in the right hand.
31:53Manny takes advance of the chance to flurry and pops Eric with a right and a left at the end of the round.
31:58And Morales wobbles to his corner.
32:02Let's go. Let's go.
32:04Let's go.
32:06What is going to see, Poles?
32:08Let's play.
32:09It's a good game.
32:10Let's play.
32:11Let's play.
32:12Let's play!
32:13Let's play.
32:16Let's play.
32:19Go to win.
32:24Go ish.
32:25Alicia.
32:26Let's play.
32:27Good game.
32:29Pls play, ready, go.
32:31Let's play.
32:32Thank you very much.
34:03Come on.
34:05Plan.
34:06Plan.
34:07Let's go.
34:09All right, let's go, let's go, come on, let's go, all right, time in, let's go.
34:39Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go!
35:09Morales, 22 out of 46, doubled Pacquiao, who landed 11 out of 42.
35:22If you believe in Harold Letterman's scorecard, then you believe Manny Pacquiao needs a knockout to win.
35:28Eric Morales, if he stands up, is going to be the winner if Harold's got his right.
35:34And now in addition to all the bleeding, Pacquiao's right eye has begun to swell shut.
35:39And it's bleeding really, really bad now.
35:41And that could give Morales some great chances with his jab and his left hook.
35:46But it doesn't seem to be bothering Pacquiao because he just shot a beautiful straight left hand out there.
35:55Hey, as a teenager, Manny Pacquiao stole, or sold stolen cigarettes on the streets of Manila just to try to survive.
36:03So he's been through tougher than this.
36:05Yes, he has.
36:09Morales seems to sense that his job is to stand up.
36:22He's still fighting, but he's staying more out of harm's way.
36:27Hard right hand by Morales.
36:29Steps into the tray again.
36:30Pacquiao pushing Morales off to try to get punching room.
36:41Morales is using that jab over and over, sensing that Pacquiao may have trouble seeing with the right eye.
36:47Good straight right hand by Morales, and a left hand inside by Manny.
36:51You know what that means.
37:03Blood starts to flow again.
37:06More than a minute left in the round.
37:08Red combination by Morales.
37:11People may wonder if, oh, good body shot.
37:18If Barrera handled Morales twice, and Pacquiao demolished Barrera, why is Morales doing so good
37:28against Pacquiao?
37:31Because Stiles make fights.
37:33In part because Stiles make fights, in part because he's so big and strong now at this weight,
37:39and he takes such a good punch that it keeps him in the game.
37:43And in part because he's always fighting Marco Antonio Barrera in some sense or another,
37:48and this was his chance tonight to beat a guy who had badly beaten Barrera,
37:53which in his view would be a victory over Marco.
38:01All right, bring up, bring up, bring up, bring up.
38:08Bring up, bring up, bring up, bring up, bring up.
38:09Pacquiao is going to need to be more active and more dynamic in the 12th round
38:13if he's going to create the knockout he appears to need.
38:18The featherweight division is a gift that keeps giving to boxing,
38:27and this is no exception.
38:36Harold Letterman had Morales winning the 11th,
38:38further sealing the deal on the notion that if Pacquiao's going to win,
38:42he'll need a knockout to do it.
38:43Not out of the question, though.
38:49I had it six rounds to five for Morales.
38:57Pacquiao's never had a knockout after the 10th round,
39:00and it's going to be extremely difficult to do it against the taller,
39:05extremely resilient Morales.
39:06But again, as Roy said, not out of the question.
39:13And then, of course, the judges have confounded us before.
39:17But in this instance, I think the tactical advantage has been clear enough.
39:21I can't conceive of the judges going against Morales.
39:31He switches southpaw, lands a couple of right hands,
39:34puts himself in harm's way, though, against Pacquiao's left hand.
39:38That's a big one.
39:39I don't know why he would fight Pacquiao southpaw.
39:40Why in the world would he switch southpaw?
39:42That seems dumb to me.
39:45I don't understand that.
39:46His father told him, don't do anything stupid.
39:48Please be cautious.
39:49He switched southpaw and got hit by a massive left hand.
39:53I think Morales wants to fight.
39:55I know he wants to fight.
39:58Oh, my gosh.
40:01Talk about going into the jaws of the lion.
40:09This is a picture that doesn't need any captions.
40:16Morales is just being stubborn here.
40:34Won't turn back because he turned and he's not going to let Pacquiao
40:37get the best of him like this.
40:38And this is crazy because he's giving the fight away like this, I think.
40:40Guys, there's nothing like boxing
40:42and there are no athletes like fighters.
40:45We can call this March Gladness.
40:49Absolutely.
40:50There's nowhere else in sport
40:52you'll find greater passion,
40:54greater intensity,
40:55greater courage,
40:56greater commitment,
40:58greater sheer guts
40:59than what these two guys are showing you.
41:01This is boxing at its best.
41:03See, he just means he's not going to be out there up in the style of competition.
41:15I don't know why he would do this.
41:16That was crazy for him to do it.
41:18What a fight!
41:19Nobody is going to ask for their money back.
41:27Nobody is going to ask for their money back.
41:31That may be the best two fights back to back I ever seen.
41:38Unbelievable.
41:40What a night in Las Vegas.
41:42Ending your living room.
41:45Do we want to see this one again?
41:48We'll have a hunch we might.
41:52Just a wild hunch.
41:53Harold Letterman gives the 12th round to Pacquiao
41:58and clearly Pacquiao deserved the 12th
42:00off those massive left-hand shots
42:02that Morales set up for him
42:04by turning southpaw in the middle of the round.
42:07It was crazy.
42:08When you turn southpaw against the southpaw,
42:10he's better at hitting you from the southpaw stance
42:13than you are hitting him.
42:13You're opening up your chin.
42:14I wouldn't understand why he'd do it.
42:15Like right here, he throws a jab,
42:17he counters the jab with a beautiful overhand left.
42:19You can't actually get hit with a better punch than that.
42:21So why would you turn southpaw at a time like that?
42:24That was seconds after he turned southpaw.
42:25And beats him to the punch with the right hook.
42:27I mean, you can't outbox a southpaw
42:30by turning southpaw this late in the fight.
42:32You're tired, you're going to make mistakes,
42:33and he's best at this.
42:35That was crazy.
42:35It was as if he was saying,
42:37all right, Manny, you need a knockout.
42:39I'll give you a chance at it.
42:40Let's see if you can do it.
42:42Hit my chin.
42:45Amazing.
42:47Let's take a look at the three judges
42:49who are charged with the responsibility
42:50of sorting this one out.
42:51All veterans, all terrific.
42:53Chuck Ciampa, one of the best.
42:55You see his scorecard for Barrera
42:57in the second Barrera-Morales fight.
43:00He scored for the winner.
43:01It was controversial.
43:04Dave Moretti, famous all the way back
43:07to some great fights in years past.
43:10Scored De La Hoya-Sturm for De La Hoya,
43:12as did all three judges.
43:13And Paul Smith had Barrera-Morales three,
43:19a draw, which a lot of media people thought
43:21was a very good scorecard.
43:23But at the end of the day,
43:24Barrera was the winner of that one,
43:26and Michael Buffer has the secret.
43:28Let's find out who won.
43:29Ladies and gentlemen,
43:31here at the MGM Grand,
43:33we saw two of the best fighters,
43:36not just in this division,
43:37but pound for pound in the world today,
43:39have the courage to face each other.
43:42A round of applause for both of these gladiators.
43:48We go to the scorecards.
43:52Paul Smith, Dave Moretti, and Chuck Ciampa
43:57all have the same score.
44:001-15 to 1-13
44:04to the winner by unanimous decision.
44:08A close fight.
44:35Thank you very much, Jim.
44:37Congratulations.
44:38Eric, what was your plan
44:41coming into this fight
44:42to neutralize his left hand?
44:47What was your plan for this fight
44:49to avoid the left-hand side?
44:53Well, we did a different change
44:55to the other Mexican fighters
44:56who had fought with him.
44:58The style was a little more Mexican,
44:59more calm, more reserved,
45:01with reserved movements,
45:03but with a counter-golpe fast.
45:06My plan was,
45:07because I fought some of the left-hands,
45:09but I knew this guy was quick and whatnot.
45:11We wanted to jab, bob and weave,
45:14but real carefully using the jab.
45:17When he suffered that cut on his eye,
45:20did you think the fight
45:22was going to go to distance?
45:23When he suffered that hurt in the eye,
45:26did you think the fight
45:28would be able to reach the distance?
45:29What do you think the fight was against him?
45:30What was your plan?
45:31What's your plan?
45:31What was your plan?
45:32What was your plan?
45:32You did not have a hit in the eye,
45:33but what was your plan?
45:35You didn't have a hit in the eye.
45:36It was not so important.
45:37It was possible to stop.
45:37It's possible to take a shot.
45:38It was very focused on
45:39on the right-hand side.
45:40I was really focused on
45:43My intention was to finish the fight well. I didn't expect the pure cut, but everything went well.
45:51A cut like that is very dangerous for the opponent, but my plan wasn't focusing on stopping the fight was to punish him.
45:59Was he tougher than you thought he was? Because he took a lot of your heavy punches too.
46:06Do you think he was stronger than you thought? Because he took a very hard hit from you.
46:12He took a lot of good punches. I think he had a good advantage.
46:17However, his punch is respectable. He's not so annoying as they said, but it's strong.
46:26And before there's something else that happens, and this is over, I want to thank all the people who believed in me.
46:31I want to thank Top Rank for this fight. I think he liked it to the people.
46:35That's the kind of punches we want for the people.
46:37He was a tough guy. I hit him with everything. And we knew he was tough.
46:40And we had to work hard to beat him. I want to thank Top Rank for this fight.
46:45And this is the fight that a lot of people wanted to see.
46:47Do you feel vindicated, restored in the eyes of your fans after the losses to Barrera?
46:56I want to thank Top Rank for the support that he gave me back to this fight.
47:06I want to thank Top Rank for the support that he gave me back to this fight.
47:10The people are the ones who decide on what level they put me.
47:13I think that today, the arena was quite satisfied with the fight that Manny Pacquiao and I did.
47:19It was a pleasure to be here again.
47:22Yes, absolutely. I feel vindicated because the Top Rank, my promoters, they put me in one of the fights the way I would prove and I would show.
47:31And you can see the crowd here and the way the fight went, that this is what they want.
47:36Would you give him a rematch or would you prefer to fight Barrera for a fourth time?
47:43I don't know, I don't know. The people decide.
47:46As you saw, I'm in the ring.
47:49I'm here for the people. I like the spectacle.
47:52I could try to do another fight.
47:54However, I lost my partner in the exchange of shots.
47:56And even in the last rounds, when I didn't have the need, the people is what they like.
48:01If the people want to see the four, we'll see.
48:03If not, there are many interesting fights.
48:05It's hard to say. The public is going to really have the final stay.
48:09They want some fights.
48:11I could have taken it easy at the end of the fight because I was ahead.
48:15But the public wants this and they want the fourth fight, we'll do it.
48:19But you really liked to stand toe-to-toe with him in the 12th round, even if you thought you won the fight, didn't you?
48:25Did you like that?
48:34I love you.
48:36Gracias.
48:37Gracias.
48:38All right.
48:39Manny Pacquiao.
48:40Salamat.
48:41All right.
48:43Let's thank you in Tagalog for a good fight.
48:49Why was he more difficult for you than Barrera?
48:55I missed that one.
48:56I'm sorry.
48:57I missed that one.
48:58I'm sorry.
48:59Why was he more difficult for you, Manny, than Barrera?
49:04Because, you know, it's hard for me because he's different style against Barrera.
49:10So, Morales is a slugger, a boxer.
49:12So, he throws straight to the body, straight to the head.
49:16And he has an uppercut, so it's very different from Barrera.
49:21Was his size a problem for you?
49:24Oh, the size is not a problem.
49:26No.
49:27That's my regular weight, you know, uncomfortable weight.
49:31That's 130 pounds.
49:33Were you surprised that he took some of your best punches?
49:37Yeah, you know, I remember the success of using winning, so...
49:42And I wanted to ask you about the gloves.
49:44Do you think that had you been given the puncher's gloves that you normally wear, Reyes gloves,
49:51that you would have had a better chance to do damage?
49:54I think if we were using other clitorious gloves, I think I knocked him out, you know.
50:03Why weren't you able to use your gloves?
50:07How did that happen, that your promoter gave that edge away?
50:12Under the camp of Morales, they requested that gloves.
50:15And then, you know, the Nevada Athletic Commission, they want to use my winning gloves.
50:22Because Morales wants to use winning gloves.
50:25But you could have used your gloves.
50:27There's no longer a rule that you have to use the same gloves as the opponent.
50:32Yeah, that's right.
50:33But, you know, we followed the decision of the promoter.
50:39Because he gave the gloves.
50:41You can use your gloves if you want, if it's not in the contract.
50:45But it was in the contract that we were winning gloves.
50:47Was that a mistake, to put that in the contract?
50:49We were never asked.
50:50Actually, I do not know that.
50:53And, you know.
50:54All right.
50:55Let's go, Manny.
50:56To when you hurt your eye, the referee in round five ruled that it was a punch.
51:03You tell us what you think happened.
51:06That's a hit.
51:07Right there.
51:08Oh, yeah.
51:09That's a hit.
51:10But, you know, that's a hit.
51:11But, you know, the decision of the referee is his punch.
51:14So, a hit in the punch.
51:17So, I don't know.
51:18What was the doctor saying to you when they took time out?
51:22Because he took a long time to look at your cut.
51:24I did not hear what he was saying, you know, what he said.
51:29And then, he said, you want to continue the fight or stop him?
51:35You want?
51:36He said, yeah.
51:37Did it affect you in the fight?
51:39The fight, yeah.
51:40Very effective, that cut.
51:43Because one eye can't see, you know.
51:46You couldn't see out of that eye?
51:48Yeah.
51:49I couldn't see.
51:51But, you know, I do my best.
51:53And then, you know, I get a great fight, you know.
51:57People love this fight, you know.
51:59I do my best.
52:00I try my best to win the fight, you know.
52:03Do you want a rematch?
52:05Yeah.
52:06I want a rematch anytime, anywhere.
52:08Thank you very much again.
52:10All right.
52:11Thank you, Larry.
52:12And I would like to thank HBO for giving me this big opportunity
52:15to shoot the whole world.
52:17And I would like to thank to all the people who love boxing,
52:19especially to all my countrymen in the Philippines,
52:21and also the president man and the president of the Philippines.
52:24Thank you very much, sir.
52:25And to all the government officials come here to watch the fight,
52:29to support my fight.
52:30Thank you very much.
52:31All right.
52:32All right.
52:33All right.
52:34to support my fight. Thank you very much.
