00:00Sing to the bottom.
00:02All right, let's have you cross your arms.
00:04Should I look towards me for a second?
00:06Three, two...
00:11When I first decided I was going to pursue photography full-time,
00:15Bring your head down.
00:16The one piece of advice that I got was,
00:19take a part of your life.
00:22Running, it's something that I've carried with me since I was a kid,
00:26and backbone to who I am.
00:28We knew right away that you were something.
00:31I didn't live the most normal childhood,
00:34which just meant that what my mom couldn't control in her life,
00:37she decided to control me.
00:39She wanted to punish you by not letting you run.
00:42You were dealing with a lot of stuff,
00:45and I'm glad that your addiction was running.
00:48You're a survivor.
00:51Being able to decide that I was going to take one passion and another
00:55and combine it seemed pretty organic.
00:58It's something I understand.
01:01It's a language I understand.
01:03It's people I understand.
01:05I can't help but think to myself,
01:07is it physically possible for me to endure an ultra?
01:10I had to get my toenail removed a couple days ago.
01:14I love not having toenails for races.
01:16Really?
01:17It's better.
01:18Okay.
01:19There does seem to be some common thread with ultrarunners.
01:23The first athlete that I wanted to spend time with was Jim Wopsley.
01:28He's widely considered one of the best ultrarunners of all time.
01:32I'm naturally a bit of a recluse, but running has always been a way to connect with people.
01:40He's been a game changer in how people approach these hundred mile races.
01:45An ultramarathon is a hundred miles long,
01:48sometimes climbing more than Mount Everest in elevation.
01:51They're doing these crazy races and we get to toe the line with them.
01:57It's like you get to go play basketball with Jordan.
02:00I'm starting to realize how beautiful it is just to get to the starting line alone.
02:06The fear of failure is what holds so many of us back from attempting to do things we've never tried.
02:15It's wild to think where I might be in life if I hadn't found running,
02:20and also how many other athlete stories started there.
02:24Running is for me like freedom.
02:29I'm hoping that these athletes help me answer questions I have about my own story as a runner.
02:36These athletes have taught me winning a race is far from the point of running one.
