00:00All right, let's have you cross your arms.
00:04Jim, look towards me for a second.
00:06Three, two...
00:08When I first decided I was going to pursue photography full-time,
00:15the one piece of advice that I got was
00:18take a part of your life.
00:22Running, it's something that I've carried with me
00:25since I was a kid and backbone to who I am.
00:28We knew right away that you were something.
00:31I didn't live the most normal childhood,
00:34which just meant that what my mom couldn't control in her life,
00:37she decided to control me.
00:39She wanted to punish you by not letting you run.
00:42You were dealing with a lot of stuff,
00:45and I'm glad that your addiction was running.
00:48You're a survivor.
00:51Being able to decide that I was going to take
00:54one passion and another and combine it seemed pretty organic.
00:58It's something I understand.
01:02It's a language I understand.
01:03It's people I understand.
01:05I can't help but think to myself,
01:07is it physically possible for me to endure an ultra?
01:10I had to get my toenail removed a couple days ago.
01:14I love not having toenails for races.
01:16Really?
01:17It's better.
01:17Okay.
01:18There does seem to be some common thread with ultrarunners.
01:23The first athlete that I wanted to spend time with was Jim Wopsley.
01:28He's widely considered one of the best ultrarunners of all time.
01:31I'm naturally a bit of a recluse,
01:37but running has always been a way to connect with people.
01:40He's been a game changer in how people approach these 100-mile races.
01:46An ultramarathon is 100 miles long,
01:48sometimes climbing more than Mount Everest in elevation.
01:51They're doing these crazy races,
01:55and we get to toe-to-line with them.
01:57It's like you get to go play basketball at Jordan.
02:01I'm starting to realize how beautiful it is
02:04just to get to the starting line alone.
02:07The fear of failure is what holds so many of us back
02:11from attempting to do things we've never tried.
02:15It's wild to think where I might be in life
02:18if I hadn't found running,
02:20and also how many other athlete stories started there.
02:24Running is for me like freedom.
02:29I'm hoping that these athletes help me answer
02:31questions I have about my own story as a runner.
02:36These athletes have taught me
02:38winning a race is far from the point of running one.
02:48I'm hoping that they have got bigger than one.
02:51I'm hoping that they've taken care of.
02:52I've been asking if they have sat there
02:53in order to do things they can reach,
02:54because what is high up,
02:55is that they belong to what the cellphone's
02:56in competitive ordem.
03:02The weight of failure comes down talking
03:02and how smallCAR inglés comes.
03:05So that they believe this allows us
03:06to find progress through right or good
03:09in our careers.
03:10So that if people see what they want,
03:11let's do this in this question.
03:14These athletes Rise up first Francisco
03:15is that these athletes athletes
