00:30Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown this Monday afternoon.
00:34I hope your week has started really, really well.
00:37Mine has started with a dental emergency.
00:39So this week I'll be wearing a little bit of a mouse shield
00:42in order to still be able to present Countdown,
00:45which might give you a few little giggles at some of the pronunciation.
00:48Never tick off Susie Dent after you've learned from that, isn't it, Colin?
00:52I wouldn't mind if she'd let me know, but it was a sucker punch.
00:57I know.
00:57And, you know, but that's, you know, don't talk over her origins of words.
01:01You'll never do it again, will you?
01:02Listen, I want to ask you about this, because not only is my mouth a bit sore,
01:06but I'm a bit bleary-eyed because it's my favourite month of the year.
01:09It's the baseball playoffs.
01:11I won't bore you all talking about it.
01:13But a lot of late nights, absolutely love October.
01:16And I was thinking about American sports because the NFL's just underway.
01:20The NBA shortly, that's coming up.
01:23The NHL, the ice hockey just started at the weekend.
01:26And you don't have to be an American sports fan to enjoy it if you go to it.
01:31It's such a tourist event.
01:33You're not a big American sports fan, but I bet you've been.
01:35Well, I saw NBA twice.
01:37I saw Oklahoma Thunder play in New Jersey and Miami Heat in Miami.
01:42And I think the thing about American sport is not necessarily about the sport.
01:45It's about everything around the sport.
01:47And you get to, you know, you go there and the food's actually decent.
01:49It's not like the, you know, the stadium's at home.
01:52It's, yeah, it's an experience, isn't it?
01:53Right.
01:54Well, listen, February the 11th, Super Bowl party at my house.
01:57Love it.
01:58In Dictionary Corner then, she's never been to my Super Bowl party, but she did attend my Eurovision party this year.
02:05Camera phones left at the door in sealed bags.
02:08It was a crazy night.
02:09Susie Dent, ready to quarterback another countdown.
02:12And we welcome back to Dictionary Corner a person who can play in so many positions.
02:17Businessman, chef, TV personality, musician.
02:21And as you can see, a dedicated follower of fashion.
02:25Levi Roots is back.
02:26Well, we've got a new champion.
02:30He won a double challenger episode on Friday.
02:34Adrian Weston is back.
02:35How you, mate?
02:36Yeah, I'm good, Colin.
02:37It was absolute drama on Friday.
02:40Now, you love the racing, don't you?
02:43And you used to race the cars.
02:45Yeah, I did.
02:45Yeah, I was lucky enough to do that for six or seven years.
02:48Single-seaters.
02:50Did you ever win a race?
02:51I managed to win a race at Brands Hatch.
02:53Oh, come on.
02:54It was a bit of a fluke, I'm sure.
02:55Everyone else crashed in front and you just threw the middle.
03:00Yeah.
03:00Well, that's brilliant.
03:01There you go.
03:01Proven winner.
03:02Let's see if you can get more than one win here.
03:05You're up against James Doyle from County Wexford.
03:07How are you, sir?
03:08Very good, thanks.
03:09Listen, that whole chat at the top was actually for you, not for my baseball fascination.
03:14You love your American football.
03:15Tell me about that.
03:16Yeah, big fan of the NFL.
03:18As you say, Sunday nights, you know, a couple of hours in front of the TV watching it.
03:23Haven't been to a game.
03:24Very much looking forward to going over and seeing one live.
03:28And your Super Bowl party as well should be good.
03:30How did you choose your team?
03:32I was on a trip to New York with a few friends about 15 years ago.
03:38And the LA Chargers were playing that night.
03:41Yeah.
03:41Or the San Diego Chargers, as they were at the time.
03:44And just really got into the whole run of it and followed them ever since.
03:48Probably the LA Rams would have been a better choice.
03:50You would have got a Super Bowl.
03:51But hey, I'm glad you enjoy it, Mitt.
03:53Let's see how you get on today.
03:55Best of luck then to James and Adrian.
04:00Right, Adrian.
04:01First gear.
04:01Hi, Rachel.
04:02Hi, Adrian.
04:03Could I have a consonant, please?
04:05Can we start the week with L?
04:07And a vowel.
04:09U.
04:10And a vowel.
04:12I.
04:13And a consonant.
04:16K.
04:17And a consonant.
04:19P.
04:21Er, another consonant, please.
04:23S.
04:25Er, and another one.
04:27L.
04:28And a vowel.
04:31E.
04:33And a consonant, please.
04:35And lastly, B.
04:37At the home and in the studio.
04:39Let's play Countdown.
04:40We'll see you next time.
04:57Bye arrived, everyone.
04:58OK, Adrian. Five.
05:13And James. Five. Five.
05:15Steady start. Spike. And James. Likes.
05:18Likes and Spike, the dictionary corner.
05:21Thank you for all the S's. I appreciate them.
05:23How are we doing over there?
05:26Yeah, we've got a couple of sevens.
05:28Yeah, upskill is my favourite one.
05:31Upskill. Very modern word, that.
05:33And also something that I was never...
05:35..was the bullies for seven.
05:37Oh, bullies, yeah. Bullies and upskill.
05:41Nice five points each, though.
05:43That's what matters. And James, you're picking these letters.
05:45Hi, Rachel. Hi, James.
05:46Can I start with a consonant, please? You can indeed.
05:48S. And a vowel.
05:51A. And a consonant.
05:54T. And another.
05:57G. And a vowel.
06:01O. And a consonant, please.
06:05R. And a vowel.
06:09U. And another.
06:13E. And a consonant, please.
06:18And...
06:19A final T.
06:20And 30 seconds.
06:21E. And a consonant.
06:24And a consonant, please.
06:27It must be updated.
06:30I'm expecting better than five, so let's see how we get on, James.
06:55Eight. Look at that, I told you.
06:57Seven. Oh, Adrian's got a seven, what have you got?
06:59Gutters. Gutters, you'll be gutted about this.
07:02Outrages. You'll be outraged at that. Outrages.
07:06Yeah, absolutely brilliant, well done. Very good.
07:08APPLAUSE
07:11Right, nice letters, generous letters. Generous enough to get a nine?
07:15No, not quite. No, we were with outrages as well, weren't we?
07:19Outrages, yeah. Couple of the sevens, but nothing beat him.
07:22Eight. There you go, James, that's as good as it gets.
07:25Let's go to the numbers, Adrian. One large, please, Rachel.
07:28Thank you, Adrian. One from the top, and five little ones to start the week.
07:33And these numbers are seven, four, six, two, nine, and the large one, 25.
07:41Ooh. And the target, 521.
07:43Five, two, one, numbers up.
07:45One, number four, five, four, five.
08:025-2-1, Adrian.
08:185-2-2.
08:19One away, and James?
08:20No, I think I messed that up.
08:22No, no, it's seven points for Adrian, if you're right.
08:25OK, seven times three is 21.
08:27Where's your three?
08:28Oh, sorry.
08:30Sorry, six over two is three.
08:32Six over two is three.
08:34Seven times three is 21.
08:36Yep.
08:3821 times 25 is 5-2-5.
08:40I'm wondering how you missed this.
08:425-2-5.
08:43And then nine minus six is three.
08:45And then nine minus...
08:46You know what, I mean, Adrian, nine minus six,
08:49which you've already used, is three, but four is four.
08:51And you could have taken the four away.
08:53So, I'm sorry, but no, that didn't work.
08:59That was like being told off by your teacher, wasn't it?
09:01I deserved it, to be fair.
09:03You did.
09:04You absolutely did.
09:05There you go.
09:065-2-1 was achievable, but no points for Adrian and James
09:10as we get our first tea time teaser of the week.
09:13It's Gary Pint.
09:15Gary Pint.
09:16Gary's having a pint and probably several more.
09:18Gary's having a pint and probably several more.
09:21Gary is partying.
09:43Gary is partying.
09:44Right, back to the game.
09:46Business time.
09:46James, and more letters.
09:47Consonant, please, Rachel.
09:50Thank you, James.
09:51D.
09:52And a vowel.
09:54O.
09:55And a consonant.
09:57N.
09:57And another.
09:59M.
10:00And a vowel.
10:02I.
10:03And a consonant.
10:05L.
10:07And a vowel.
10:08A.
10:10And another.
10:11O.
10:13And a consonant.
10:15And lastly, S.
10:18Thanks, Rich.
10:18Let's go.
10:26Let's go.
10:32Let's go.
10:35Give me a number, James.
10:50Five. Adrian. Eight.
10:53There you go, James.
10:54Lones. And back in the game, Adrian.
10:57Mondials.
10:58Susie. Mondials.
11:02Can you put the S on it?
11:03I think it's just there as an adjective.
11:06Unfortunately.
11:08Involving the whole world, worldwide.
11:10But not as an ant, I'm afraid.
11:12Sorry.
11:13What was there in that dictionary for me, Levi?
11:16Yeah, I think we've got a...
11:18A nine.
11:19A nine.
11:19We do.
11:20Salmonoid.
11:21Yes, and all to do with salmon.
11:23So it's a fish of a group that includes the salmon family,
11:25together with pikes, smelts and Argentines.
11:28So S-A-L-M-O-N-O-I-D.
11:30Salmonoid.
11:31APPLAUSE
11:32Sounds like some sort of mutant fish of some sort.
11:37It does a bit, doesn't it?
11:37The salmonoids are going to take over the earth.
11:40That is a scary thought.
11:42Right, Adrian, more letters, please.
11:44OK.
11:45Vowel, please, Rachel.
11:46Thank you, Adrian.
11:46And the last one.
12:14Tea.
12:15Half a minute.
12:16During the game.
12:18I'm out.
12:19I'm out.
12:19Bye.
12:20Bye.
12:20Bye.
12:25Bye.
12:26Close ten to now.
12:31Bye.
12:34Bye.
12:35Bye.
12:36Bye.
12:39Bye.
12:42Bye.
12:42Bye.
12:43Bye.
12:44Bye.
12:45Bye.
12:45Adrian?
12:47Seven, not written down.
12:49Seven, not written down. James?
12:51Six. What's a six? Depard.
12:53What did you not write down? Tramped.
12:55Tramped. Salt Lake. Very good.
12:57APPLAUSE
12:59Off the back of the nine, what have you got for me, Levi?
13:03Couldn't be tramped. Oh, there you go. Very good.
13:05Very good. Disappointed. Back to the earth with a bump in Dictionary Corner.
13:09Second numbers round. James?
13:12Three large, please, Rachel. Thank you, James.
13:14Three large and three little. A tricky choice often.
13:17Let's see how this one falls.
13:19The little one's one, nine, and three.
13:22And the big one's 75, 150.
13:26And the target to reach 595.
13:29595. Numbers up.
13:31US-7000, theя, the completely up-to-top-top-top.
13:34Out Subject is a little bit different.
13:48James.
14:035, 9, 4, not written down.
14:05One away, Adrian.
14:075, 9, 5.
14:08Off you go, sir.
14:09OK, 9 minus 1 is 8.
14:109 minus 1 is 8.
14:13Times 75.
14:14600.
14:16Then subtract the 3.
14:18Yep.
14:19Then 100 over 50 is 2.
14:21And take that off as well.
14:22You have thoroughly redeemed yourself.
14:23Very well done.
14:245, 9, 5.
14:2722 plays 18.
14:28Close game, which is what we love on a Monday afternoon.
14:31As we pause to break bread with the sharpest dressed dictionary corner guest possibly in history.
14:38Look at this.
14:39Now, a man like you, Levi Roots, gets invited places.
14:42I always think that, you know.
14:43If you dress well, you get invited places.
14:46So, tell me about an example of that that sticks out in your mind, of a good party that Levi Roots got a special invitation to.
14:54Well, actually, the best party is when you're partying with the royal family, with the king and the queen.
14:59Oh, hello.
15:00Because this is exactly what happened on the 7th of May during the coronation, which I was lucky enough to be invited to that amazing party at Windsor Castle, which everyone was there, including the good and the no-goods.
15:13On my left was Naomi Campbell.
15:17On my right was Oswald Botan.
15:19I was in absolutely company, good company.
15:22And somebody came over to me and said to me, oh, Levi Roots, somebody needs your assistant.
15:27So, I was wondering, who is this needs my assistant?
15:30And no other than Reverend Rose.
15:32Because you know the film Driving Miss Daisy, which I'm a great fan of, was here was a moment where I would be driving Miss Rosie.
15:40Because Reverend Rose is the absolutely most amazing person that there is, you know.
15:46She is the Bishop of Dover and Canterbury, the first female chaplain to the queen in the house.
15:52And she's also a Jamaican, which resonated with me.
15:55So, then it says, oh, you know, Reverend Rose needs a lift home.
15:58So, I was just about to press my cassette in my car to play.
16:04I was going to play Honoraga Tip.
16:07So, as soon as Reverend Rose is coming in the car, I quickly stopped.
16:11Stopped that.
16:12She got in the car calling and it was the most amazing thing.
16:15I mean, if you've got some sins that you wanted to repent on, there is no better person to have a chat more than this oldest of only woman sitting in the car next to me.
16:23And as soon as I got home, she texted me a nice, lovely text saying, thank you, Levi.
16:28It was the most amazing journey that there ever was.
16:31And for me, it was just a prayer being said.
16:33That's a fantastic journey with driving Miss Rosie instead of driving Miss Daisy.
16:38Well, there you go.
16:39What a day that was.
16:40Dancing on the ceiling.
16:41Well done, mate.
16:46Well, Adrian James and I feeling suitably underdressed.
16:49Let's get on with the game.
16:50You're up, Adrian.
16:52OK, a vowel, please, Rachel.
16:53Thank you, Adrian.

17:23And start the clock.
17:23And start the clock.
17:24And start the clock.

17:29And start the clock.
17:29And start the clock.
17:30And start the clock.
17:30And start the clock.
17:31And start the clock.
17:31And start the clock.
17:32And start the clock.
17:32And start the clock.
17:33And start the clock.

17:38And start the clock.

17:56And James?
17:57Six.
17:58Nice easy round, what do you got?
17:59Ranger.
18:00Yep, Ranger and James?
18:01Uncage.
18:02Yes, Uncage, Ranger.
18:04All good, all good.
18:06Anything above a six?
18:07Yeah, a lovely word.
18:09Furnace for seven.
18:10Furnace.
18:11Furnace.
18:12Nice.
18:13Furnace for seven.
18:1428 plays 24.
18:16Let's do the letters again with our challenger James.

They've been eventful every round, Adrian, and you're picking them. One notch, please, Rachel. Thank you, Adrian. One from the top row, and five others, and this time around, the numbers are one, seven, two, three, five, and 100. And the target? 648.
20:03Six, four, eight. Numbers up.
20:04Six, four, eight.

20:386, 4, 8. Yeah, and James?
20:406, 4, 8. Well done, both of you. Off you go, Adrian.
20:43OK, so 7 plus 3 minus 2.
20:468. Add that to the 100.
20:48108. 5 plus 1 is 6.
20:52And multiply the two together. Perfect. 6, 4, 8.
20:55Well done, and James? Slightly different.
20:587 minus 1 is the 6. Yep.
21:00100 plus 5 plus 3.

21:06Yeah.
21:0910.8 second tea time teaser.

21:16Moth boar. You'll find a moth in here from time to time, but not a boar.
21:20You'll find a moth in here from time to time, but not a boar.
21:23That is, of course, the bathroom. The bathroom.
21:37Six rounds left. James, you're breathing down his neck and you're picking.
21:51A consonant, please, Rachel.

23:52We're going to have a tries to fill out our next step by little guy, what isn't it?
24:10Even just the beginning of the month I don't even know what you're doing.
24:14And then on tour, we will Antwort Devs come back and take care of yourself what you need.
24:22CHAMP
24:25Six, please.
24:26James.
24:27Risky, seven.
24:28Adrian.
24:29Pectin.
24:30And, James, was it the right time to gamble?
24:32Unpitch.
24:33To un-pitch.
24:35Something could be un-pitched, but you cannot un-pitch it.
24:40There you go.
24:41And all good with Adrian's word?
24:43Yeah, pectin used in jam-making, that kind of thing.
24:46It helps set your jam absolutely fine.
24:48And six was the best that we could do as well.
24:50Yeah.
24:51Well, listen, you're a chef, so expected you to get that, Levi.
24:54So, ten points to difference, still in crucial countdown.
24:58Conundrum territory with four rounds left and time for origins of words.
25:04Susie.
25:05Well, I'm going to talk about a word that, you know,
25:09we encounter, I suppose, fairly frequently because certainly
25:12in clinical trials, the placebo effect is discussed quite often
25:17and it allows doctors, clinicians, to understand the real effects
25:22of a drug that's, yeah, as I say, under trial.
25:25But it's actually incredibly old.
25:27So, placebo itself goes back to the Latin for I shall please.
25:31And in Roman Catholic, in the Roman Catholic religion,
25:36there are offices of the dead, so sort of dirges, if you like,
25:40that include the line, placebo domino in regione vivorum,
25:44I will please the Lord in the land of the living.
25:47And all the earliest uses of placebo are in this religious ecclesiastical contest.
25:52And, in fact, there are uses recorded in the Oxford English Dictionary
25:56of placebo at a funeral for someone who falsely claimed a connection
26:01with the deceased in order to get a free meal.
26:04So, that's a bit of an anomaly, that one,
26:07because they definitely weren't pleasing anyone at the congregation there.
26:10But since the 16th century, the idea of a placebo,
26:13known otherwise as a sugar pill, really,
26:16has been mooted and approved of, really, by doctors.
26:20So, there was a 19th century clinician
26:23who focused very much on the effects of TB
26:25and set up a sanatorium called Edward Livingstone Trudeau.
26:29And he said the physician's role was to cure occasionally,
26:32relieve often, console always.
26:35And in that consolation, the placebo was considered to be really important
26:39because, as we know from hypnotism, from mesmerism, early mesmerism,
26:44the sort of psychosomatic effects of things like this
26:47can be incredibly important.
26:48If you believe you are being healed,
26:50then your body will sort of reflect that.
26:53But what I hadn't known until I researched this
26:55is its earliest uses in masses.
26:57But, as I say, it is all about I shall please.
27:04Well, no pill's going to cure the L of either Adrian and James
27:07if they lose out today. It's been close all the way,
27:10so let's see who's going to get the job done.
27:12James, you're playing catch-up, but not by much.
27:15Just ten points behind. Let's go.

31:34OK, so 75-4.
31:3675-4, 71.
31:39Times up by the nine.
31:40639.
31:42Add five.
31:44Add five, 6-4-4.
31:46And 50 over 25 is two.
31:48Yeah.
31:49And add it on.
31:506-4-6, two away.
31:51Well done.
31:52Come on, then, Riley, let's have it.
31:54Well, if you add the digits up,
31:56you'll notice this one is divisible by nine.
31:58And you can say 75 minus five is 70.
32:01Again, 50 over 25 is two.
32:05Add those for 72.
32:06And 72 times nine takes you to 6-4-8.
32:09Well done.
32:12Right, 75, 51.
32:14Not a crucial conundrum, but a really good game today.
32:16So, James and Adrian, fingers on the buzzers, please.
32:19Let's reveal the first countdown conundrum of the week.
32:26No luck at all.
32:27No luck at all, Adrian and James drawing blanks.
32:58And everybody's averting my gaze in the studio.
33:03Wow, another one. We had one of these last week where all of us drew a blank.
33:07So if you've got this at home, go straight to the top of the class.
33:09The answer was...
33:11Greyhound. Yes.
33:16That was a round of applause just for you at home,
33:18if you managed to get that right.
33:20Well, James, you sort of flirted with greatness today, didn't you?
33:23But just didn't quite come together.
33:25Bit of pressure under the lights, eh?
33:27Didn't quite get there, no.
33:28Good day, though, eh?
33:29Yeah, excellent. I really enjoyed it, thanks.
33:30Thank you for being here. Excellent.
33:32You're going to be one of those champions, Adrian,
33:34that just gives us drama every day.
33:37That sums me up.

33:50I can't wear you either.
33:50Good stuff. Thank you, Suze.
33:54There you go.
33:54Didn't quite go to the bottom of the fourth quarter,
33:56but it was exciting enough.
33:57Can I tell you about my favourite American sport before we go?
34:00Yes.
34:00Have you seen it?
34:01It runs alongside the Super Bowl,
34:02and it's called the Puppy Bowl.
34:04No.
34:05If you haven't seen it, you're going to love it.
34:07It's rescue doggies, rescue kittens,
34:09and they just get the rescue cats and dogs to play the Super Bowl,
34:11and they get rehomed afterwards.
34:13I mean, it's joyous.
34:15Only in America.
34:16Yep.
34:16We could do with a bit of that, I think.
34:18I think we should bring it over.
34:19Let's host it.
