00:00It's taken a while but it's lift-off time for Doncaster Sheffield Airport. I've just come back
00:06from a media briefing with South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard who has confirmed that he will be
00:13backing the decision for funding to be released to Doncaster Council so they can reopen Doncaster
00:20Sheffield Airport via a council-owned company. This decision has been months in the making.
00:26Long story short, the airport under private ownership closed in 2022. There's been a big
00:32campaign to bring it back to life, not without controversy. The likes of Leeds Bradford Airport
00:36have said it's been unfair or would be unfair to restart the airport using public money,
00:42potentially unfair competition. However, Mr Coppard says they're confident in legal advice,
00:48they're happy to go ahead. They think this airport can basically be a catalyst for jobs and investment
00:53in the local area in Doncaster. Flights aren't likely to start until 2028. The final decision's
00:58not due till next week when Mr Coppard and four council leaders will make a final vote on what
01:05happens. But the political reality is that with the South Yorkshire Mayor's backing, Doncaster
01:12Council very keen to make this happen. The reality is it is going to happen and it won't be too long
01:18until we see flights operating from Doncaster Sheffield Airport once again.
