00:00so this is a picture of me and my mom when I was a kid my mom was so young and full of life
00:18I just think about all of the struggles that she dealt with she was my superhero because she got
00:28through it all words can't describe how much I miss my mom I miss her every day
00:40I guess been a struggle without her it's been a struggle
00:45you know growing into a woman with no guidance so all I think about is
00:52how different things would be if she was here
00:58I miss her like crazy
01:16Isaiah was born evil I've seen his evilness come out I've seen it in his face
01:23when Isaiah made threats I believed him I don't know if it was something in his eyes
01:30he just looked crazy to me I can't really explain it but as a kid I just knew something wasn't right
01:39that monster was just waiting to come out
01:46so
01:53I'm
01:54Oh, my God.
02:24So, we are originally from Oakland, California.
02:30We moved to Arizona in the year 2000.
02:34I'm the oldest of five.
02:38I think that my mom was born to be a mom
02:41because no matter how many of us it was,
02:45it was very natural to her.
02:49I was 11 years old when my mom met Isaiah Patterson.
02:59I will never forget it.
03:01We walked through the door.
03:02I saw him standing in the kitchen with my mom,
03:05all hugged up on my mom.
03:08This is a 60-something-year-old man at the time.
03:11My mom was almost 30,
03:17trying to hug us and play with us,
03:20and we were just like, uh, no.
03:23It's nice to meet you, Mom.
03:27He didn't have a good vibe to him.
03:29His aura was very fake.
03:33Usually, when my mom dates someone,
03:35we don't get that right off the bat.
03:39From what I can remember,
03:41I know he came on very strong.
03:44I was just thrown off.
03:47I didn't want him touching me.
03:50I don't know if I can sense it then as a child,
03:55but I was uncomfortable.
03:58I was very uncomfortable
03:59because once he came,
04:02he never went away after that.
04:05We were stuck with him.
04:09We didn't see the red flags right away,
04:10but slowly,
04:12slowly but surely,
04:13we definitely started seeing
04:15some of them come out.
04:20Once Isaiah moved in with us,
04:21chaos followed.
04:41Before he moved in with us,
04:43in the house,
04:43we were with her all the time.
04:46We had some hard times.
04:48We had to sleep on floors
04:49and all these other things,
04:52but it never felt bad
04:54because we were together.
04:57So it didn't feel like something was wrong.
04:59As long as we were all together,
05:01as long as my mom was there,
05:03we could be anywhere.
05:06We could sleep anywhere.
05:07It didn't matter.
05:08But when Isaiah came into the picture,
05:14the dynamics completely changed.
05:17Completely.
05:24One day,
05:25I remember he and my mom were in the room
05:27and I wanted to get to my mom
05:31and I wanted to talk to her about something.
05:32And she was always available to me,
05:35so I just opened the door.
05:39Hey, mom.
05:40Tried to talk to my mom.
05:41Hey, baby.
05:43And he got upset.
05:49When he was angry,
05:52I can't really describe it
05:55other than he just would kind of
05:56turn into something else.
05:57He kind of looked flustered.
06:01And then he pushed me out the door
06:03and he slammed the door in my face.
06:05We're not doing this now.
06:10And I remember just thinking, like,
06:12what just happened?
06:14Like,
06:16my mom would never
06:17let anyone treat us like that.
06:21So
06:21in that moment,
06:24I was shocked.
06:24I was hurt.
06:26I was upset.
06:27That was a moment
06:28where I knew,
06:30I can't stand this man.
06:32Because it was so uncalled for.
06:34And I didn't understand
06:35why he did it.
06:36I just felt like
06:37he wanted my mom all to herself.
06:40So Isaiah was jealous
06:41of our relationship with my mom.
06:43I definitely think that he
06:45thought of her as a possession
06:46instead of a partner.
06:47I didn't like
06:48the way that he was
06:49controlling her
06:51and telling her what to do
06:52because that wasn't normal
06:53for her.
06:54we weren't used to being
06:56shut off
06:57away from
06:58our mom.
07:00That change was tough.
07:10My
07:11little sister
07:13was the baby
07:14of the family.
07:15and she
07:18took well
07:20to Isaiah
07:21more so because
07:22she was so young.
07:25If you gave her candy,
07:26she was your friend.
07:28So
07:29I just remember
07:30me and my sister,
07:31we were home
07:32from school.
07:34At the time
07:34my mom wasn't home,
07:36we see a donut
07:36and it's wrapped up
07:38in a napkin.
07:39We're kids
07:40and we see
07:41something sweet
07:42and we want it.
07:43I told my sister,
07:44I'm like,
07:44we should ask Isaiah
07:45for it
07:46to see if he'll
07:46let us have it.
07:48My sister goes
07:49in my mom's room
07:50and asks him
07:50for the donut
07:51and of course
07:52he gives it to her
07:53and she eats it.
07:56When I see
07:57that she ate
07:58the donut,
07:58I was upset.
07:59Why would you
08:00ask him for it?
08:00You knew that
08:01I wanted some too.
08:02So I kind of
08:03tap her on her arm
08:04like that.
08:06Like,
08:06why would you do that?
08:07You knew I wanted
08:08some of that.
08:09You were supposed
08:09to share.
08:12Hey!
08:13He got upset
08:14by that
08:15and she's not
08:16crying or anything.
08:18He just rushed
08:20up to me like,
08:21don't you put
08:21your hands on her
08:22and I'm just
08:23kind of scared.
08:25He picks me up
08:26by my arm.
08:27He's hitting me
08:27with his hand.
08:28I was terrified
08:29and he was hitting
08:31me hard.
08:34You know,
08:34I'm crying,
08:35I'm hysterical.
08:36I didn't know
08:37how far he was
08:38going to take it.
08:39Eventually,
08:40he stopped.
08:48I don't remember
08:49telling my mom,
08:51but I know
08:53I did tell her.
08:55She probably
08:55would have told me
08:56something like,
08:57I'll take care of it
08:58or don't worry about it,
08:59I'll talk to him.
09:01After that incident,
09:05I definitely
09:06was more afraid
09:08of Isaiah.
09:09I stayed clear
09:10of him.
09:11When he got home,
09:12I made sure
09:13I was nowhere in sight.
09:13this picture
09:24is a picture
09:26of my winter formal.
09:30My mom
09:30helped me pick out
09:31my dress,
09:32she helped me pick out
09:33my accessories,
09:34and she did
09:35her famous hairstyle,
09:37microwave curls,
09:38on me.
09:40That day was,
09:41that was a good day.
09:43This moment was special
09:44because Isaiah
09:46couldn't pull her away.
09:48I was able
09:50to be her baby doll
09:51that day,
09:52so I think,
09:53I think she enjoyed that
09:55just as much
09:56as I did.
09:58That was the last time
10:00she helped me
10:02get ready for anything.
10:03Once Isaiah came,
10:07things changed
10:08because I wasn't able
10:10to be as close
10:12to my mom.
10:13Sucks because,
10:15like I said,
10:16like she helped
10:17everybody else
10:17get ready for prom
10:19and graduation
10:21and things like that,
10:23but that was it for me.
10:29That was it.
10:33There had been
10:39a couple of mice
10:40in the house.
10:42Well, my mom set out
10:43traps to catch them.
10:44She told Isaiah
10:45to dispose of them
10:46before we could see it
10:47because of our fear
10:49of them.
10:51One morning,
10:52I remember waking up
10:54and I was getting up,
10:56getting ready for school.
10:59So we're all going
11:00to the bathroom,
11:01and as soon as we walk
11:02in the bathroom
11:02and turn the lights on,
11:06immediately I noticed
11:07there's a dead mouse
11:08in the sink
11:09and there's a dead mouse
11:10in the toilet
11:11and there's also
11:12a dead mouse
11:13inside the tub.
11:17Instead of disposing
11:19of them,
11:20Isaiah put them
11:21inside of our bathroom.
11:24Me and my sisters,
11:26we took off running,
11:28screaming, crying.
11:29like, we were really,
11:31you know, shaken up
11:32by that.
11:34Isaiah was amused.
11:37He just stood
11:37in the doorway laughing.
11:39He thought that was funny.
11:41That's not normal behavior
11:42for somebody his age.
11:44So it just shows you
11:45what type of individual
11:46he is.
11:47He went out of his way
11:49to use those against us
11:50to terrorize us.
11:51When I learned
11:56that my mom
11:58was pregnant by Isaiah
12:00and having another baby,
12:01I was upset.
12:03I didn't think about,
12:04oh, I'm having another sibling.
12:05I just thought, like,
12:07now we're really not
12:08going to get rid of him
12:09because as a kid,
12:11I would just wait
12:12for the day
12:13where they would
12:13just break up
12:14and he would just leave.
12:17And it would never happen.
12:19So when she had the baby,
12:20it was just...
12:21I was upset.
12:30This is a picture
12:31of my mom
12:32and my baby brother.
12:34And it was Isaiah.
12:35But I scratched his face
12:40out of the picture.
12:43He didn't have
12:44any relationship with him.
12:45He didn't play with him.
12:46He didn't change him.
12:47He didn't feed him.
12:49He never even referred
12:50to him as my baby.
12:51It was that baby.
12:53During that time,
12:54I hated Isaiah's existence.
13:01I hated anything
13:02that involved him
13:05outside of my brother.
13:09I would be upset
13:10because everything
13:12I was going through,
13:13everything I felt
13:14at that time,
13:16as far as being alone
13:18and feeling, like,
13:21unwanted and lost,
13:25he was the cause
13:27of all of that
13:28because he took
13:30my mom away from me.
13:31At that time,
13:35all I could do
13:36was just cut him out.
13:52I do believe
13:53she feared Isaiah
13:54a little bit
13:55during that time
13:55that a lot of times
13:57when my mom stayed away,
13:58it was to protect us.
14:03I remember one day,
14:04it was time for us
14:05to get up for school,
14:06so I got me and my siblings up
14:08and got everybody dressed.
14:11Isaiah was like,
14:12where's your mom?
14:13and we was like,
14:15we don't know.
14:18He went into
14:19a rampage.
14:24He went into her room
14:26and dragged
14:27all the furniture out
14:29piece by piece,
14:30and he pulled everything
14:31out to the front yard
14:33and started smashing it
14:34with the hammer.
14:34I have no idea
14:39what's going on
14:40until I see him outside
14:42breaking up stuff.
14:44To me,
14:45he looked like a madman.
14:46He looked crazy.
14:48That was the first time
14:48I've seen him
14:49act that way.
14:51And like,
14:51what else is he capable of?
14:52So at this point now,
14:53I'm looking at him
14:54in a different way,
14:55and I'm thinking,
14:56well,
14:56what will stop him
14:58from killing us?
15:00I think at that time,
15:02I was scared
15:03that he was going to
15:04attack Shaquayah,
15:05my sister.
15:08When Isaiah
15:08would go on his rampages,
15:10he's looking around.
15:13He's just staring at you,
15:15or he'll make
15:16eye contact with you,
15:17and like,
15:18that thought,
15:19visualizing his face,
15:20still gives me chill.
15:24Because it's just pure evil.
15:26Like,
15:27he didn't have
15:28any emotion on his face.
15:31Glasses are at the tip
15:32of his nose again,
15:33and he's looking over there.
15:34This is how he looks
15:35over at everybody.
15:38When you see that demeanor,
15:40you know
15:41that he's on a rampage.
15:45Then,
15:46he start heading
15:47directly towards me
15:48because I was holding
15:49the baby.
15:52And he was walking
15:53towards me
15:53with the hammer.
15:56And all of a sudden,
15:57my neighbor
15:58across the street
15:58asked him, like,
15:59what you coming
16:00over here for?
16:01What do you think
16:02you're doing?
16:05And he goes,
16:06I'm about to bash
16:07that baby in the head
16:08because he's not
16:09about to get raised
16:10by y'all.
16:11And that's when
16:12I start stepping back
16:13a little bit more.
16:14Like, hell you are.
16:15I'm, like,
16:16shielding my brother.
16:17And she told him
16:19her exact words
16:20was over my dead body.
16:21You got to get through me
16:22to get to these kids.
16:33So he just turned around.
16:35He got in his car
16:36and drove off immediately.
16:42I just,
16:43I didn't understand
16:44why he was so angry.
16:45And it was just,
16:46like, the devil himself.
16:48It just seemed so evil
16:50and so dark.
16:52But looking back,
16:58I should have been scared.
17:01But the hate
17:02that I had for him
17:03didn't allow me
17:05to fear him at all.
17:07I remember one time
17:24I was home
17:25watching the baby.
17:26My mom wasn't there.
17:27He couldn't find her.
17:28You going to tell me
17:29where she's at?
17:30When Isaiah
17:31couldn't find my mom,
17:32he would come to my room
17:33and he would say,
17:34where's your mom?
17:35And I'd be like,
17:36I don't know.
17:37And he'd be like,
17:38you know where she is.
17:39You know where she is.
17:40And you just lying for her.
17:42I have no idea.
17:43So the next thing was
17:47to pick at me
17:49because he felt like
17:50I was keeping her secret.
17:52You want to play that game, right?
17:53So he took the baby
17:54and he knew that
17:57that would get a rise out of me.
18:01And I'm like,
18:02give me the baby back.
18:03I don't know where my mom is.
18:05I picked up this aluminum bat
18:07that I had
18:08that I kept under my bed.
18:09And I told him,
18:10give me my brother back.
18:13And he's laughing and joking.
18:17It's like watching
18:19a demon take over a house.
18:23You've claimed
18:24that you were going to
18:25or threatened
18:26to smash him in the head
18:28with a hammer
18:28so that he wasn't raised by us.
18:31We didn't know
18:32what Isaiah was capable of.
18:34And I wasn't trying
18:35to find out
18:36with my brother.
18:37We had no clue
18:40what was coming next.
18:44No clue.
18:51Isaiah came in
18:53and took him
18:53because
18:54that was his way
18:56of antagonizing me
18:58because he couldn't find my mom.
19:01He ran outside
19:03with the baby.
19:04I chased after him
19:05to get my brother
19:06because I didn't know
19:07what he was capable of
19:08with the baby.
19:09Put my brother down.
19:11So me knowing
19:12that he loved his car,
19:14I turned around
19:14and I went to his car
19:16and I said,
19:17give me my brother.
19:18I'm going to smash
19:19the windows
19:19on this car.
19:22And that got his attention.
19:23Let him go.
19:25I just remember thinking,
19:28Chapoia,
19:28please don't.
19:31At that point,
19:32I knew it was serious
19:33and I felt
19:35like my sister
19:36was in danger.
19:36I was scared.
19:37I didn't know
19:37how it was going to end.
19:44And then he stopped
19:45and came closer to me
19:47and said,
19:47if you touch my car,
19:49I'm going to jail.
19:50You think I'm afraid
19:51to catch the case?
19:54I was more angry
19:56than fearful.
19:57So I'm like,
19:58give me my brother
19:59with the bat up.
20:00Give me my brother
20:01or I'm about to bash
20:03these windows
20:03out of this car.
20:08He put the baby down
20:10and he took off
20:11looking for my mom again.
20:17I pick him up immediately
20:18and we just went
20:19inside the house.
20:21I definitely did
20:23underestimate Isaiah.
20:26I wasn't fully aware
20:27of what he was capable of.
20:31There was a time
20:41that I could remember.
20:43We walked into the house
20:44and my mom was sitting
20:46kind of at this
20:47folding table.
20:48She used to play
20:48this card game.
20:49Her and Isaiah
20:50were playing.
20:51Hey, Mom.
20:53And, you know,
20:54I'm like hugging her,
20:55kissing her, whatever,
20:56and then I see
20:56in her mouth
20:57her front tooth
20:58is missing.
20:59Mom, your tooth.
21:02And I'm just like,
21:03what happened?
21:05And she's just like,
21:06oh, baby headbutted me
21:08and knocked my tooth out.
21:09Just an accident.
21:11I'm all good.
21:14I believed her.
21:15Never questioned it.
21:17Never thought about it again.
21:20Later on,
21:21me and Shakoyah,
21:22we were talking.
21:23I brought that up.
21:24And Shakoyah was just like,
21:25he didn't knock her tooth out.
21:27Isaiah punched her
21:28in her mouth
21:29and knocked her tooth out.
21:31And I was like,
21:32what?
21:39I'm shocked.
21:41I never heard that.
21:43Never knew
21:44at that time
21:46that he
21:47was abusing her.
21:49It hurt to know
21:50that she was
21:51going through
21:52those sort of things
21:53back then
21:54at that time.
21:55And she was hiding it.
22:00She didn't want us
22:01to be scared.
22:02And she just,
22:04my mom was always
22:04so happy.
22:05So I think she just
22:07didn't want to
22:08portray anything different.
22:11I think
22:31my mom
22:34wanted us
22:35to
22:35feel like
22:37everything was still
22:37the same.
22:38she didn't want us
22:42to feel her pain
22:43or
22:43know
22:45what
22:47was going on.
22:53My mom
22:54raised us
22:56to
22:56fight for ourselves,
22:59defend ourselves.
23:01So
23:01she couldn't
23:04show us
23:05that she was being
23:05beat.
23:08That would go
23:09against
23:10everything
23:11that she
23:13tried to teach us.
23:21She didn't want
23:22anybody to
23:23try to speak up
23:25to Isaiah
23:25on her behalf
23:26because she knew
23:27it wouldn't go well.
23:29I feel like my mom
23:30did fear him.
23:32I don't know
23:33if she feared him
23:34because of what
23:35he was capable of
23:36with her
23:37or us
23:38or family.
23:39I'm not 100% sure
23:40but there was
23:41definitely some fear
23:42there.
23:45But when you go
23:45through it
23:46every single day
23:47all day
23:48and there's no
23:48escaping this person
23:49like that's hell.
23:53That's hell.
23:54I remember
24:01going into my mom's
24:02room
24:02which her bathroom
24:04was connected
24:04to the room
24:05and then my mom
24:06was inside the tub
24:07and I see Isaiah.
24:11Isaiah was
24:11standing over
24:12her like
24:14he was standing
24:14outside the tub
24:15watching over her
24:16as she
24:17you know
24:17bathed
24:18and my mom
24:19responded to him
24:19like I got this
24:20I'm a grown woman
24:21I know how to
24:22clean myself.
24:22I was just like
24:24what kind of
24:26what
24:27what kind of
24:29situation is this
24:30like who does that?
24:33Bath is usually
24:34sanctuary
24:35where people go
24:36to exhale
24:37and to unwind
24:39from a long day
24:40and here
24:42he is
24:42taking those moments
24:43from my mom
24:44by standing over her.
24:47She didn't have
24:47any privacy
24:48she didn't have
24:49a moment to herself.
24:53She didn't have
24:54the freedom
24:54to relax
24:56or that little
24:57bit of privacy
24:57that most
24:58humans
24:59most people get.
25:03This wasn't
25:04a one time thing.
25:07Anytime my mom
25:08took a bath
25:08Isaiah was right there
25:10monitoring her
25:11how she was bathing.
25:16Anywhere my mom went
25:17Isaiah went.
25:17Isaiah did not want
25:19my mom to have
25:19a life of her own
25:20and so
25:22that was his way
25:24of controlling
25:25everything
25:26but normally
25:28my mom
25:29would have put a stop
25:30to it
25:30a long time ago
25:31so that's why
25:33I never really understood
25:34why
25:36she let him
25:37have so much
25:38control over her
25:39and again
25:40you know
25:41later on
25:42when finding out
25:43the details
25:44it makes
25:45a little bit
25:45more sense
25:46that it was
25:48intimidation
25:48and fear
25:49and
25:50control.
26:03At this time
26:04Isaiah was
26:05the breadwinner
26:07so
26:07when he got upset
26:09with my mom
26:09he would not pay the bills
26:11he would not put food
26:13in the house
26:13so with him
26:14not paying the bills
26:15we were left
26:16without water
26:17we were left
26:18without electricity
26:19and in the Arizona heat
26:21that's a tough time
26:22she'll ask him
26:25like
26:25why did you let the water
26:26get cut off
26:27why didn't you pay the bill
26:28he didn't care
26:30about the baby
26:31being there
26:32during these times
26:33when there was
26:33no water
26:34or electricity
26:34we were in the dark
26:36we were without food
26:37we were without water
26:39Isaiah will come back
26:41to the house
26:41and see that
26:42and leave
26:43at this point in time
26:47when we had no water
26:49food
26:50or electricity
26:50that was the beginning
26:52of the end
26:52I believe he knew
26:55that my mom
26:55was at her breaking point
26:56but
26:57we had no idea
26:59what he was going to do
27:01or who he was going
27:01to take it out on
27:02but we knew
27:04it was coming
27:04after the eviction
27:19we were all split up
27:21as a family
27:22my mom
27:24and the baby
27:25stayed with
27:26one of my aunts
27:27and I stayed with
27:29one of my other aunts
27:30and my two sisters
27:32were in California
27:33and my brother
27:35was in California
27:36with his dad as well
27:37I missed my mom
27:38I did not like
27:40being away from her
27:41and not living with her
27:43but it was such
27:45a relief
27:46not to have to deal
27:47with him day to day
27:48I felt like it was over
27:50like it was done
27:51there was nothing else
27:51you can do
27:52there was nothing
27:52else you can say
27:53I remember my mom
28:07coming to visit me
28:08and
28:09when I saw my mom
28:12I was very concerned
28:13about her appearance
28:15my mom was
28:19super super light
28:21bony
28:22and
28:24her face
28:25was sunken in
28:26like
28:27she had dark circles
28:29it does seem like
28:30my mom was going
28:30through hell
28:31because
28:31her kids were
28:32taken away from her
28:34they were all
28:34split up everywhere
28:35she's still
28:37dealing with
28:38Isaiah's antics
28:39with him stalking her
28:41showing up to my aunt's house
28:43showing up
28:44wherever she is
28:45it just seems like
28:47she was just
28:48drained
28:49you sure you okay
28:50I'm fine
28:54I was concerned
28:56that she was letting
28:58Isaiah suck the life
28:59out of her
29:00I told her that I
29:01wanted to actually
29:02like spend the night
29:03with her
29:03this weekend
29:05you and me
29:07and she told me
29:10yeah
29:10she was going to come
29:11get me
29:12she told me she was
29:15going to come get me
29:16and I was looking forward to
29:25going to spend the night
29:26with her
29:27because it had been a while
29:29so she told me she'll see me
29:32on Friday
29:33so we had plans to just watch
29:35movies and eat and hang out
29:36before she left
29:38I gave her a hug
29:39and I was like
29:40okay I'll see you
29:41on Friday
29:42I was like mom
29:43just don't forget
29:44don't forget to come get me
29:45she was like
29:47I'm not
29:47I'm not
29:47I'll be back to get you
29:50I never talked to her again
29:55I never got to go
29:57spend a night with her
29:58the morning of March 17 2006
30:11I got up for school
30:15in the car
30:18on the way to school
30:19my cousin got a phone call
30:21from her mom
30:22hello
30:26all of a sudden
30:27I noticed my cousin's face
30:29because I'm sitting behind her
30:30and she's driving
30:33but I can see her
30:34in the rear view mirror
30:35what?
30:36and I can see her face
30:37and she was like
30:38mom no
30:39and she started crying
30:40and I was like
30:42what?
30:43what happened?
30:44and she was like
30:45Koya's right here
30:46she just looked at me
30:48in the mirror
30:49and I was like
30:49is it the baby?
30:50and she was like
30:51no
30:52I was like
30:52is it my mom?
30:53and she was like
30:54yeah
30:54and I just lost it
30:56like
30:56I will never forget that
30:58I completely
31:00like just
31:01kicked
31:02screamed
31:02punched
31:03I just could not believe it
31:05and I was like
31:06what happened?
31:07what happened?
31:07what happened?
31:08and she was like
31:09we don't know yet
31:10we don't know
31:10and I was like
31:11did Isaiah do it?
31:12and she said yes
31:14and I just felt
31:17helpless again
31:19like
31:19oh my god
31:21like
31:22I just wanted to get to her
31:26I found out
31:47that
31:48that night
31:49Isaiah
31:51was blowing my mom up
31:53all day and night
31:54and begging her
31:56to come over
31:56he told her
31:58he wanted to see his son
31:59when she got over there
32:02he began to beat her
32:03and my mom was trying
32:09to fight back
32:10she ran out of the apartment
32:13she was beating on the doors
32:16of all the neighbors
32:17nobody opened the door
32:199-1-1 emergency
32:20yes
32:21there's a woman
32:22who's screaming
32:24at the top of her voice
32:26and there's a little boy
32:27who's saying
32:28oh daddy
32:29oh daddy
32:30Isaiah came out of the house
32:32with the knife
32:33and my mom saw him
32:35and she took off running
32:37and she slipped
32:38on the wet grass
32:39he stabbed her
32:45continuously
32:46all over
32:47from her arm
32:49to her face
32:51her neck
32:51all over her body
32:53he continuously did this
32:57until
32:57one of the neighbors
32:59opened the door
33:00and yelled
33:00hey stop
33:01he looked at the neighbor
33:06and he said
33:07that's what happens
33:07when you try to turn a hole
33:08into a housewife
33:09and my mom collapsed
33:14right there
33:15from her wounds
33:19Isaiah walked back
33:21into the apartment
33:22where my brother was
33:24he called 9-1-1
33:26and told them
33:27um
33:28y'all need to get here
33:28quick
33:29cause
33:29um
33:30I just cut my son's mom
33:32I have my 3 year old son here
33:34and if you don't hurry up
33:35I'm gonna do something else
33:36then you're committed
33:37a violent act
33:38yeah
33:38what did you do
33:40with my wife
33:41and we have a job together
33:42I cut her with a book
33:43so he stayed on the phone
33:51until the police got there
33:53okay
33:56I believe Isaiah stayed there
34:00after calling 9-1-1
34:02because
34:02he knew
34:05there would be street justice
34:08and I know for a fact
34:09that's not what he wanted
34:10there was nowhere for him to go
34:12the only thing that was left
34:14for him to do
34:15was to turn himself in
34:16this is a picture of Isaiah
34:34this was
34:36a picture
34:37from the day of the murder
34:39that's the face
34:41that he made all the time
34:42when he was gonna cause hell
34:44the only difference is
34:46those glasses are not
34:48at the tip of his nose
34:49and he's not looking over at you
34:51there was no change
34:53to this demeanor
34:54except
34:55when he laughed
34:56when he was
34:58terrorizing somebody
34:59that's the only time
35:01you got a smile
35:02or
35:03a laugh
35:04a chuckle
35:04or anything
35:05but other than that
35:06this is how this man
35:07looked every day
35:08that look
35:11there's nothing there
35:14just pure evil
35:15mm-mm-mm
35:19it's hard to see this man
35:25I just have nothing
35:27but rage
35:29for this man
35:31he definitely doesn't
35:33look remorseful
35:34he doesn't
35:34look like
35:35he did anything
35:38that he feels bad about
35:39I honestly think
35:42he turned himself in
35:43because
35:44my mom's
35:46brothers
35:47my uncles
35:47would have
35:48been looking for him
35:49he's a coward
35:53Isaiah's a coward
35:55after my mom's funeral
36:10I
36:11felt numb
36:12the best way
36:14to describe it
36:14is I felt alone
36:16I felt alone
36:18I felt lost
36:21I felt like
36:24I felt worthless
36:28because the only person
36:31that
36:32that like
36:36spoke light into me
36:38was gone
36:39I felt misunderstood
36:46I felt like that
36:54for many many years
36:56and I still feel that way
37:00a lot of those ways
37:01I still feel alone
37:03I still feel lost
37:05I don't feel worthless
37:08nobody can ever make me feel worthless
37:11but I definitely feel alone
37:15I don't go to the grave site often
37:26it puts me
37:29in an emotional state
37:31where I can't
37:33get out of it
37:33I'll go
37:35and the whole day
37:38I'm just emotional
37:39I feel nauseous
37:41and sick to my stomach
37:42all day
37:43for the rest of the day
37:44I don't want to talk to anybody
37:45I'm upset
37:47all those emotions
37:49come flooding back
37:50and I can't get rid of it
37:52like it takes
37:54a lot of work
37:55and it takes time
37:57for me to get out
37:58of that headspace
37:59because
38:01it's not easy
38:04to get out of
38:04or we don't really know
38:05how to navigate
38:06those emotions
38:07I guess that's the best way
38:09to describe it
38:10because we have
38:11all these emotions
38:12and we don't know
38:13what to do with them
38:14we don't know
38:15who to talk to
38:16to help us
38:17get through them
38:17it's just like
38:20we're upset
38:22we're hurt
38:22and just
38:24we have to sit
38:24in those feelings
38:25and
38:27we avoid
38:28going to the cemetery
38:29for those reasons
38:30this is
38:42Shakoya and I
38:44at my mom's
38:4750th birthday party
38:49memorial
38:49that we had for her
38:52it was meant to be
38:55all about her
38:56the guest list
38:58was meant to be
38:59who she would want there
39:01what music she'd want to hear
39:03what drink she'd want to drink
39:06we wanted it to be like
39:09if she threw a birthday party
39:10this is how it would
39:12it would go
39:13I could feel her
39:14in that room
39:15her presence
39:16was felt
39:17for sure
39:18my mom
39:26her only voice
39:27now is
39:28us
39:28her kids
39:29she left behind five
39:31it's a lot of voices
39:32so
39:32I want to keep her memory alive
39:36I want people to know
39:38who she was
39:39before it all happened
39:40I want people to know
39:43how it happened
39:45and
39:46I just feel like
39:53it's a part of
39:55my grieving process
39:57I understand my mom more
40:02and I appreciate her
40:03and I applaud her
40:05she have five
40:07beautiful gifts
40:09that she gave to the world
40:10and she did
40:13great with all of us
40:15for the short time
40:15that we were with her
40:16she was just
40:19all around awesome
40:20all around awesome
40:23I believe
40:25after this interview
40:26Isaiah Patterson
40:27is no longer
40:29a factor
40:29in
40:31my
40:32day to day
40:32struggle to heal
40:33I'm leaving that here
40:36he no longer has
40:39any power over me
40:40with how I feel
40:42at this moment
40:43I'm good
40:46I'm good
40:49there's nothing else
40:50he can do to me
40:51it's
40:53Isaiah is a horrible
40:59memory
41:00of the past
41:01that's what he is
41:05my mother was
41:14strangled
41:16so severely
41:17her larynx
41:18was snapped
41:18in heaven
41:19as far as
41:21I'm concerned
