00:00At the 8th Cardinal Film Festival, filmmakers say film must serve as a tool for social change, especially in today's media-driven society.
00:12They say this year's theme, Film for Social Change, is a timely reminder that the creative industry holds the potential to influence lives, shift perspectives, and spark national conversations.
00:23Executive Director of the festival says storytelling through cinema remains one of the most potent ways to drive social development.
00:35It means that more people have accepted the film in African countries and in other parts of the world.
00:42So it means that the festival is doing something right and reaching filmmakers from around the world.
00:47Globally, Film Festival, like the International Cardinal Film Festival, serves a crucial platform for elevating conversations.
00:55The film industry in Nigeria today is branding the cultures and branding us in the eyes of the international global audience in terms of letting people know how we dress, how we feel about certain things, our culture, and things that we do.
01:12Definitely they are. However, I think we can still improve in that aspect.
01:16The Africans, we are making the movie, so we have to know which we want the people to know.
01:23We give them the product to educate them or to teach them what we need to show them and then to react on it.
01:31Lots of things are going on in the country, in our immediate environment, and filmmaking is a tool to change some of those negative perceptions that impact us socially and otherwise.
01:46According to a UK journalist and film director, this year's team is perfect for the time we live in.
01:52Being able to focus a lens for social change on, say, northern Nigeria, Nigeria, and Africa generally, I think it's time for young filmmakers particularly to rise up and start telling the stories about Africa from Africa rather than letting other people tell their story.
02:07Founded in 2018, the Carduna International Film Festival is the first international film festival in northern Nigeria.
