Because we miss Barry, here is a song originally written by Friedrich Hollander for Marlene Dietrich in the feature 'A Foreign Affair', now sung by Barry Humphries and Meow Meow played by the Australian Chamber Orchestra. But first, a little tale from the raconteur extraordinaire himself... (video by Philippe Charluet) #barryhumphries #meowmeow #ACO #weimar

00:01Soon after the end of the Second World War, an American film was shot in Berlin called
00:06A Foreign Affair. It starred Malena Dietrich, its music was by Friedrich Hollander and
00:14it was directed by Billy Wilder, three Berliners who had been forced into exile and new careers
00:22in California by the accession of Hitler. I knew Billy Wilder in his later years and he
00:30had a vivid reminiscence of his student days in Berlin when he lived in some poverty in
00:38a tenement building with only one lavatory on each floor. Constant flushing of this facility
00:48kept him awake all night. He could only get to sleep by imagining that he was in a tropical
00:56forest listening to the melodious splashing of a waterfall. Years later as a big time Hollywood
01:09director after the immense success of Some Like It Hot, the greatest of all screen comedies,
01:17he was living at the Bel Air Hotel in Los Angeles in a luxurious garden suite. Alas, his sleep
01:26every night was disturbed by the sound of a fountain in the garden beyond his terrace. He could only
01:42drop off by imagining that he was in a run-down Berlin apartment block overhearing the sound of a constantly
01:49flushing toilet. Hollander wrote several great songs for Malena in this movie as he had done for her
02:05first film, The Blue Angel. The most memorable was what will now be our final offerings afternoon, the ruins of Berlin. I'm joined by
02:12Meow Meow Meow. And we're going to perform it in German and the three languages of the occupying forces.
