00:12Welcome back to the 83 Dev Dialog.
00:15Today we're putting the spotlight on the two factions at the heart of the experience.
00:20The United States Army and the Soviet Ground Forces.
00:24One of the key inspirations behind 83 is a real-world event
00:27that brought us closer to the brink than most people realise.
00:31Abel Archer 83.
00:33In November 1983, NATO launched a large-scale exercise
00:37simulating the escalation towards nuclear conflict.
00:41It was intended as a drill, but to the Soviet Union,
00:43it looked like the real thing.
00:46Believing a first strike might be imminent,
00:48Soviet forces went on high alert.
00:50For a few days, the world stood just one miscalculation away from war.
00:56That tension, that knife-edge atmosphere,
00:59is exactly what drives the world of 83.
01:02A world where diplomacy failed and the Cold War finally turned hot.
01:06We've spent years researching this period,
01:09utilising a multitude of resources from military archives,
01:12historical photographs, re-enactment groups,
01:15Cold War museums and direct consultation with military history forums.
01:20Every decision, from the weapons we include to the uniformed soldiers' wear,
01:24is rooted in what would have been plausibly available in combat during 83.
01:30Let's start with the U.S. Army.
01:33In 83, American troops are built for structure, coordination and precision.
01:38You'll fight with a large range of era-authentic weapons,
01:41including the M16A1, the M60LMG, and the M21.
01:47Designed for accurate fire and tactical versatility.
01:51U.S. Special Forces bring even more specialisation,
01:54like shotguns tuned for close-quarters combat.
01:57Each role in the squad is unique,
01:59and each soldier has a job to do.
02:01You'll also notice the gear.
02:03Standardised uniforms, machined components,
02:06plastics and polymers commonly utilised in weapons and gear.
02:10This is a military that transitioned from the legacy of World War II
02:13into something leaner, faster, and more adaptable.
02:16Soviet forces are built on the Soviet military playbook
02:19and feature iconic weapons like the AK-74, the PKM, and the RPG-7,
02:26all designed for relentless forward pressure.
02:29Soviet tactics in 83 are about movement in numbers,
02:33with waves of infantry supported by armoured vehicles
02:36and overwhelming firepower.
02:38Push hard and don't stop.
02:40Visually, you'll notice the difference too.
02:43Soviet troops wear repurposed uniforms,
02:45often using older materials like canvas and leather.
02:48This isn't just aesthetic.
02:50It reflects the resourcefulness of the Eastern Bloc
02:52and their reliance on mass production
02:54and repurposed stock from earlier decades.
02:58Each faction allows you to bring the philosophy,
03:01equipment and battlefield doctrine to the fight.
03:04Play as the U.S. and choose to adopt strategies
03:06of fire discipline, coordination and role-based tactics.
03:10Or play as the Soviets and pile on the pressure
03:13with numbers and volume of fire.
03:15Two different ways to potentially win.
03:18And a battlefield with rewards
03:19which ever side plays to their strengths and group tactics.
03:23In our next dev diary,
03:24we'll explore the diverse roles available in 83,
03:27and how each contributes to the overall tactical experience.
03:31From the strategic command offered by the commander,
03:34equipped with powerful off-map policies,
03:36to the varied soldier roles
03:37that deliver specialised support and frontline firepower,
03:40every position is designed
03:42to play a critical part on the battlefield.
