During a press conference on Thursday, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) spoke about murder rates in House Speaker Mike Johnson's (R-LA) state and St. Louis, Missouri, which is represented by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO).
Transcript
00:00Governor, is this in response to President Trump talking about – or is it to prevent
00:05the possibility?
00:06When President Trump talks about deploying more National Guard troops to more cities,
00:10is this part of a response to prevent that from happening?
00:12SECRETARY POMPEO- Well, I think you can go back to your own reporting.
00:16We've been pretty consistent with these kinds of announcements.
00:19We haven't necessarily invited you into the horseshoe here to announce them.
00:23We've done it by paper.
00:24We do it every week.
00:25We're highlighting these things.
00:26We've had probably nine or ten press conferences on this topic over the course of the last
00:33few years.
00:34So we're not reacting or responding to anything.
00:36Quite the contrary, with one caveat.
00:42The community wants to see more, and we are trying to be responsive to the people we serve.
00:50As it relates to the President in particular, he's doing things to people, not with people.
00:56It's a point of profound and consequential contrast.
01:00He's – the fact of militarizing American cities.
01:03That's why I led with the prior decision.
01:06We're waiting for the outcome of that.
01:08Could have profound implications in terms of his authority to militarize American cities.
01:15Again, certainly here in California impacts, though, will be discussed and debated if he moves
01:24in our direction across the United States.
01:27But I should note just on that, if he is to invest in crime suppression, I hope the President
01:35of the United States would look at the facts.
01:37Just consider Speaker Johnson's state and district.
01:43Just look at the murder rate that's nearly four times higher than Californians in Louisiana.
01:51This is Speaker Johnson, 4x higher.
01:54I'm just offering – again, you've not seen this on Fox News, so the President may not be familiar
02:00with these facts, so I want to present some facts to the President of the United States.
02:05And imagine this is alarming to the President to learn these facts, particularly Speaker Johnson,
02:10who's been such a strong partner and ally in these efforts.
02:14So the carnage in Louisiana is well defined.
02:17Of course, Mississippi leads the nation as the number one murder state in America.
02:25Imagine this, in particular, may resonate with the President of the United States.
02:29It's got a murder rate that's 180 percent, 180 percent higher than Los Angeles.
02:35It's interesting, L.A. has more people – these are all per capita numbers – more people
02:40than Los Angeles.
02:41Perhaps the President could deploy the National Guard in every corner of Mississippi.
02:48It's – the murder rate's out of control there, carnage.
02:55And the governor may want to make that phone call.
02:58Again, this is if they care about the issues of crime and violence.
03:02I would note St. Louis murder rate is 190 percent larger than Oakland.
03:09I can go on.
03:11We could talk about the carnage in Arkansas, again, one of the top ten murder states in America,
03:16two-and-a-half, 2.6 times greater than San Francisco.
03:20Again, these are just – not just observations.
03:23They're stone-cold facts.
03:25And the fact remains, if the President is sincere about the issue of crime and violence,
03:31there's no question in my mind that he'll likely be sending the troops into Louisiana
03:39and Mississippi to address the just unconscionable wave of violence that continues to plague those states.
03:45Amen.
