00:00The European Commission has proposed removing duties on imported U.S. industrial goods in
00:06exchange for lower U.S. tariffs on European cars.
00:10The proposal is the EU's first move to implement a deal struck with the Trump administration
00:14last month, under which the bloc accepted a broad 15% tariff to avoid a full-blown trade
00:21war.
00:22Under the deal, U.S. tariffs on European-built cars were reduced from 27.5% to 15% starting
00:31August 1.
00:32In return, the EU will cut some of its duties and increase imports of American energy, one
00:38of Washington's main demands during the negotiations.
00:41The impact of removing industrial goods tariffs may in fact be modest with two-thirds already
00:46tariff-free.
00:48Beyond energy, agriculture was another key area of compromise, with the EU proposing
00:52zero tariffs on potatoes, reduced rates for tomatoes, and quotas with zero or low tariffs
00:58for pork, cocoa, and pizza.
01:01However, beef, poultry, rice, and ethanol were excluded from the concessions.
01:07Some products are exempt from the EU's 15% tariff, including aircraft, cork, and generic
01:14medicines.
01:16However, steel, aluminium and copper remain subject to a 50% tariff.
