Early Beatles photos clicked by Paul McCartney go on display in London exhibition
London’s Gagosian art gallery opens its doors to Beatles fans for a free exhibition that displays photographs from the band’s early years when they were just at the cusp of global stardom. The exhibition titled 'Rearview Mirror: Liverpool-London-Paris' kicked off at Gagosian on Aug. 28, 2025 presenting 12 works taken by Beatles singer-songwriter Paul McCartney between late 1963 and early 1964. The photographs showcase the 'Fab Four' at the cusp of their meteoric rise to stardom, which turned into 'Beatlemania.' It is the short time when they were popular in Britain and just about to make it big worldwide and carve their place in the music history books.

00:35So the photographs here cover a two-month period, a very truncated two-month period between December 1963 and January 1964.
00:45And it's the two-month lead-up to the Beatles' first trip to America.
00:50Well, I think the Beatles were low-key during this entire time, I think.
00:55They knew that their music had potential to be very, very popular.
01:00And the fandom, as we know it, really started to crop up in the summer of 1963.
01:07They began 1963 really relatively unknown outside of Liverpool and Hamburg.
01:13But that started to change as they transitioned from being supporting acts on these tours to being headliners.

02:24It was important to Brian Epstein that the Beatles expand their base of fans, and Paris made the most sense.
02:26What's interesting about the Paris pictures is that in the early days of the residency, they were able to walk the streets really without too much fuss.
02:30a handful of fans, but they're able to kind of be out and about on their own.
02:36So the pictures were actually lost or thought to be lost for about 50 years
02:40before their emergence during the pandemic.
02:44And so Paul had taken them himself and actually some of them were used
02:47for the poster that accompanied the Beatles' White Album.
02:51But after that he sort of lost track of them.
02:54So when they reemerged a few years ago, all that was left was a few negatives,
03:01a few slides, and mostly contact sheets.
03:04So we used a mixture of high-end digital and analog processes
03:11to make the most of what was left and to digitally restore the photographs
03:19to give them this sort of analog feel.
03:21I liken what we did to remastering an original track from a master.
03:51An original track of 1983, we wanted Bill

03:54We also worked for AmazingDemo to give his teaching and animals
