Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Border Czar Tom Homan was asked about the occupancy of Alligator Alcatraz ahead of its closure.
Transcript
00:00Sir, how many people are still detained at Alligator Alcatraz, and do you still see a role for that facility?
00:04It's about 50% full right now.
00:09First of all, I disagree with the judge who made the decision.
00:12I went down there.
00:13I walked through detention areas where these people sleep and live.
00:18I saw a clean facility, a well-maintained facility.
00:21I went to the medical center and talked to the nurses there on staff, looked at the medical facility.
00:27It was great.
00:27I even asked whether there's a serious situation here, can you handle it?
00:33And they can.
00:33And if it got too serious, there's a helicopter right there on premises and taken to the nearest trauma center.
00:39That's better than a lot of U.S. citizens have.
00:42And I even went to the cafeteria, and I actually looked at what they were serving for lunch that day.
00:46I opened it up and looked at it, and it was good food.
00:50And, you know, the whole environmental concern, I was briefed by the person running the facility,
00:54that all the waste is removed from that facility every day, taken off-site and removed from the facility.
00:59And as far as the complex itself, it's built on existing infrastructure.
01:04The runways and the airport was already there.
01:07These are just south-sided facilities.
01:09Now, I'll say this.
01:10I thought it was a great transition facility, but I do think ICE needs more brick-and-mortar facilities.
01:14We've got the money now to build infrastructure, like we're building the wall and other things down there.
01:17We need permanent facilities.
01:19But I'm thanking Governor DeSantis and the other governors who are stepping up and saying,
01:24we want to help you build detention facilities because they're affected by the last four years of an open border
01:30and all the criminals that are released in this country.
01:32So I welcome the governor stepping up and helping us with these transitional facilities.
