00:00San Mateo Mayor Bartolomeo Rivera Jr. and his LGO officials are pushing back on the arbitrary designation of their town
00:07as the next landfill site for the city of Manila's garbage after Navotas' landfill shut down.
00:12He contends he was never consulted by the MMDA and Mayor Domagoso's office on this impending move.
00:19Our Bernard Ferrer has more.
00:22The local government of San Mateo Rizal has opposed the decision of the city of Manila to dispose its garbage
00:29at the new San Mateo Sanitary Landfill following the closure of the Navotas Sanitary Landfill.
00:35According to San Mateo Mayor Bartolomeo Rivera Jr., there was no prior consultation or official notice
00:40from the Manila LGU or the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority or MMDA before the implementation of the move.
00:47The mayor explained that a San Mateo landfill was originally established as an alternative dumping site
00:53in case the operations of the Montalban landfill were halted.
00:57He emphasized the facility was not designed to accommodate large volumes of waste from major metromodal cities.
01:04The local government expressed concern the landfill may reach or exceed its capacity sooner than expected,
01:10worsen traffic congestion, and heightened health and safety risks to the local residents.
01:15While the San Mateo LGU acknowledges the authority of the MMDA,
01:19it asserted that any directive from the agency must be in accordance with the Constitution,
01:25national environmental laws, and the local government code.
01:28Meanwhile, Manila Mayor Francisco Esco Moreno Dumagoso issued the clarification on the matter.
01:33Everyone was informed by MMDA.
01:37Way ahead.
01:38Way ahead.
01:39Way ahead.
01:39I can attest to what Chairman Artes did.
01:45MMDA Chairman Romano Don Artes stated that the new San Mateo Sanitary Landfill has already been in regular use
01:51and assumes the garbage camera from Manila is only an additional and tolerable volume.
01:56Because of this, Chairman Artes and Mayor Rivera are set to meet and discuss the issue.
02:27The MMDA is also exploring other options, including public-private partnership or PPP proposals for waste-to-energy projects.
02:35The agency assured the public that there will be no solid waste crisis in Metro Manila.
