Climb into the cockpits of historic planes, and meet the craftsmen who dedicate their time to bring these aviation icons back to life.
Transcript
00:00We could see the cockpit of an aeroplane over the side of a wall, so we hopped at them
00:05to take their military ambitions into a new dimension.
00:09However when the guns had fallen silent, the engineering and craftsmanship, the skills
00:14and knowledge poured into developing these incredible fights.
00:17Buried wreck of an aviation icon, a corner of a foreign field that was almost forever
00:23English.
00:24And classic car restorer, and soon to be, almost by accident.
00:29The start of a very long story.
00:31Peter may have been living a dream of finding the aircraft, but after an incident happened
00:36to it, it was all recorded in the operations record book.
00:39October 1940, it was itself shot down.
00:44It landed in Kent, it changed, they had no need of a Mark I Hurricane as a train or anything.
00:51I tripped across it in 1995, and then of course...
00:56As we entered the middle years of the war, there was no further need for hurricanes in
01:02the West.
01:03The unusual 40-foot open-top containers on trucks at that point in India.
01:08And so...
01:09Located, and the paperwork...
01:11But the men that later became known as the few...
01:14...that came out cut up into 16 packing cases.
01:19Perhaps I was a little naive that aircraft engineering would be as simple as thick skin.
01:25The first Hurricanes flew with loaded, but it was tough.
01:29In the field of conflict, it brought with it a Rolls-Royce Griffin engine.
01:34It was a fairly sad Griffin engine, but...
01:37On hand, it apart proved the biggest challenge.
01:40Peter's skills were tested to the limit.
01:42Peter searched around and found another supercharger, which we dismantled and found...
01:48...to the air in the exact condition and specification she bore in the...
01:52...not a favourite with ground crews, and this example would fly...
01:55But then, there was a compromise between the need to hide up over land, and the need to hide up...
02:03We had a great moment when two trucks turned up at Moat Farm, where...
02:16Well, of course we always have to be very careful of these old warbirds, but if you entrust them to the right...
