00:00From a pair of birds flying into a Boeing 757 engine in Manchester, England,
00:05and a risky mission in the Gulf of Mexico that almost crashed a Coast Guard helicopter,
00:10to a nervous Korean man who opened the emergency exit as his plane was landing,
00:15and a military plane in Australia that narrowly missed a high-rise office building,
00:20here are 10 of the scariest aviation moments of all time.
00:32Manchester Airport is the third busiest in the UK.
00:36It sits on 1,400 acres of land and services flights to 199 destinations.
00:43Like all airports, they do everything possible to keep birds and animals off the runway,
00:47but one always manages to sneak on.
00:50On April 29th of 2007, a Boeing 757 was preparing for a flight from Manchester to Lanzarote,
00:58one of the Canary Islands.
00:59As it sped down the runway, a pair of herrings flew into the plane's path.
01:04They got caught in the engine, causing it to spit giant flames.
01:08A plane spotter who was filming nearby caught the entire incident on camera.
01:169-5-1-7 at Delta City, Cross runway 0-6-left, taxi, Delta 3.
01:22Cross 0-6-left, taxi, Delta 3-5-1-7.
01:44Thankfully, none of the 221 passengers were injured when their plane struck the birds.
01:50The pilot quickly issued a mayday call and shut down the starboard engine.
01:54The flames you see are not because the engine caught fire.
01:57They're coming from the roasted herrings stuck inside.
02:00The pilot dumped their excess fuel and quickly turned the plane around.
02:04They landed safely back at Manchester Airport, and the passengers grabbed another flight to Lanzarote a few hours later.
02:11A spokesperson for Manchester Airport said plane engines are built to deal with bird strikes.
02:16But since this case involved two large herrings, they couldn't recover.
02:26On April 29th of 2023, the Carnival Dream was on the last leg of an eight-day cruise.
02:33Suddenly, an elderly passenger began experiencing heart attack-like symptoms.
02:38At the time, the cruise ship was about 300 miles south of Fort Morgan, Alabama, on its way to Galveston,
02:44Texas.
02:45The medical staff did everything they could, but the elderly man needed a hospital ASAP.
02:51So, they called the Coast Guard for an emergency air rescue.
02:54Unfortunately, the weather didn't make rescuing this man any easier.
03:13Just as the helicopter was getting ready to land, the weather took a turn for the worse.
03:18Rain and lightning pelted the area.
03:20Not only that, but the rough waves made landing on the moving ship even more difficult.
03:25The pilot could hardly hold his bird steady.
03:29Then, he nearly plunged into the Gulf of Mexico.
03:58The helicopter had no choice but to abort the mission.
04:01They returned to base due to the weather, and everyone had to wait for conditions to calm down.
04:06Once they did, another rescue chopper arrived and airlifted the man and a nurse to the nearest hospital.
04:12Though there's not much available about the elderly man, we believe he made a full recovery.
04:22You've probably seen this video making the rounds on social media.
04:26On May 26th of 2023, an Airbus A321-200 was moments away from landing at Daegu International Airport in South
04:35Korea.
04:35It had taken off from Jeju Island about an hour before.
04:38Apparently, one of the passengers needed to get off ASAP.
04:43As the plane approached the tarmac, a South Korean man grabbed the emergency door and opened it.
04:48Frightened and confused passengers tried to stop him, but they were too late.
04:52All it took was a tiny crack and the door flung open.
04:56Prepare to have a new irrational fear unlocked.
05:18The man said he felt suffocated and needed to get off quickly.
05:23Apparently, jumping 700 feet to the ground was his idea of a safe landing.
05:28A few passengers fainted while others had trouble breathing.
05:31They were taken to the hospital when the plane finally landed.
05:34According to police, the man had just lost his job and was dealing with a ton of stress.
05:39Thankfully, the plane wasn't at cruising altitude when he opened the door.
05:43If it was, those sitting nearby would have literally been ejected into the sky.
05:49The temperature would plummet to frostbite-inducing levels, and the plane would possibly even break apart.
05:55After this incident, South Korea's Asiana Airlines stopped selling seats next to the emergency exit.
06:06Volshsky is a major industrial town in eastern Russia.
06:10Every year, Russian motocross fans gather for a local stunt show.
06:14But bikers aren't the only ones impressing the crowd.
06:17On June 16th of 2015, the show kicked off with a stunt pilot performing some death-defying trick.
06:24But things went from impressive to terrifying as he got too close to the ground.
06:40Kole, don't go away.
06:51It's far too far
06:53Do you have a deal?
07:05We will not reach the child
07:14Somehow, our pilot walked away completely unscathed.
07:18It's hard to tell what happened since the plane crashed behind the white van.
07:22It looks like he lost control while turning and just smacked into the grass.
07:32El Cajon, California is a small town on the U.S.-Mexico border.
07:36The city's name translates to The Box, which references the box-like shape of the valley surrounding the city.
07:43Apparently, the highway running through El Cajon is an ideal spot for emergency plane landings.
07:49On October 19th of 2018, a 36-year-old student pilot and his 25-year-old instructor Ryan were flying
07:57over the box when they experienced engine trouble.
08:00They knew they'd never make it back to the airport, so they aimed for a nearby field.
08:04Spoiler alert, they wouldn't make that one either.
08:08Holy s**t! What the f**k?!
08:11You're just laying it on the highway.
08:13Holy s**t!
08:14And he's got it under control.
08:16Holy s**t!
08:17Holy f**k!
08:18Holy f**k!
08:21Woo!
08:22This is f**king gnarly!
08:25You guys see this every day.
08:29That is the craziest f**king thing I've ever seen.
08:32He pulled it off perfect.
08:45According to police, Ryan narrowly missed some power lines as he set the plane down.
08:50He's lucky that stretch of I-8 was straight and not too busy.
08:54There's really no avoiding cars when you have to land on the highway.
08:58Your only hope is that they see you and move.
09:00Ryan and his student pushed the plane off to the right shoulder and waited for a truck to pick it
09:05up.
09:05We're not sure if the student kept up with his lessons after this close call.
09:15Every summer, Brisbane, Australia hosts the Queensland Arts and Culture Festival.
09:21It's a three-week affair celebrating Australia's most creative minds.
09:25It ends with an event called River Fire, which draws everyone's attention to the Brisbane River.
09:30However, the 2018 River Fire had everyone questioning the Royal Air Force's sanity.
09:37River Fire was in full swing.
09:39A few people were stuck at work and watched the party from their high-rise office.
09:44Then, something in the distance caught their eye.
09:46It was a Boeing C-17 Globemaster, and it was flying way too close to the ground.
09:53Just wait to the pilot, please.
10:13The Globemaster cleared the office building by about 300 feet.
10:17As far as we can tell, this was an organized stunt, not an accident.
10:21People jumped down the RAAF's throat, calling the stunt irresponsible and comparing it to 9-11.
10:28Others came to the Air Force's defense, saying this would have been planned perfectly.
10:33Unless the pilot had a freak heart attack, there was a 0% chance he'd crash the plane.
10:43Auto gyros, also known as gyroplanes or gyrocopters, are a type of one-person aircraft.
10:49They're sort of like helicopter-small-plane hybrids.
10:53Instead of a motor spinning the top rotor, it rotates freely as air passes through it.
10:58But they can't take off vertically, so they use a runway to get enough speed and create lift.
11:05On May 6th of 2011, an auto gyro pilot was out for a casual flight when something went horribly wrong.
11:12His engine sputtered out, meaning he'd lost all forward thrust.
11:16Now came a dangerous fight against gravity as he aimed for a dirt road.
11:21"...and you get to work with the road."
11:31"...and you can use a ladder."
11:34"...and you can use a ladder on a road."
11:36"...and you can use a ladder on another road."
11:38"...and you can use a ladder."
11:57Now, while that looked bad, our pilot was perfectly fine.
12:00We can't say for sure what happened to his autogyro, though.
12:03The first gyrocopters were invented in Spain in 1923.
12:08Amelia Earhart actually held the altitude record for 84 years
12:12before an Italian pilot named Donatella Ricci broke it in 2015.
12:22They say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.
12:26We hate to break it to you, but that's not always true.
12:29On December 12th of 2020, 41-year-old Alejandro Carlson
12:34learned what happens in Vegas usually goes viral on social media.
12:38It was about 1.30 p.m.
12:40A plane was taxiing along the runway at McCarran International Airport
12:44when the passengers noticed someone on the wing.
12:47According to police, Alejandro jumped the fence and climbed onto the plane.
12:52What ensued was a 45-minute standoff between police and Mr. Carlson.
12:57OK, they said are all three cages, service boys and rats.
13:03OK.
13:08Once you get a can, you make a component of the plane.
13:18OK.
13:21Go and Mel Tory house.
13:22And the чувствite was torn down.
13:23We told you what happens in Vegas,
13:26just for 24 hours today.
13:27It was a parallel to the Union Area,
13:30It looked like a pretty rough fall, but Alejandro was okay.
13:33He was treated for some small cuts and a broken nose.
13:36He was eventually booked into county jail for trespassing.
13:40Police said Alejandro admitted to being mentally ill.
13:43He claimed he had a story to tell and believed jumping on the plane would give him a bigger audience.
13:48Hopefully, he got the help he needed.
13:55Halim International Airport serves two major purposes in Jakarta, Indonesia.
14:01Other than servicing commercial flights, the Indonesian military and president use it for their personal needs.
14:07So, when a cargo plane skidded off the runway in 2021, you can bet everyone was on high alert.
14:14On March 20th of 2021, a Trigana Air Boeing 737 cargo plane was trying to take off when something went
14:23wrong with the right-hand main gear.
14:25Unfortunately, they were already 3,000 feet in the air and had to make an emergency landing.
14:36They were still on the right-hand main gear, but they were still on the right-hand main gear.
15:20The cargo plane was going to Makassar, Indonesia, a relatively short two-hour flight.
15:26Not wanting to risk anything, they turned around and tried to land back at Halim International.
15:32But landing isn't easy when one of your gears isn't working.
15:35The gear collapsed, and the plane skidded off the runway before finally stopping.
15:40Thankfully, all four crew members were okay.
15:43Their plane, though, was in rough shape.
15:45The airport had to shut down for 24 hours while they sorted everything out.
15:55Sand and dust storms are pretty common in Saudi Arabia.
15:59They usually happen in the summer or during rough weather.
16:02For example, a transition between winter and spring can trigger them.
16:06Strong winds pick up sand, dust, and other particles, causing low visibility.
16:11As you can imagine, flying through one isn't a walk in the park.
16:15On November 30th of 2017, an Airbus A380 was taxiing down the runway when the sandstorm struck.
16:23Visibility dropped to zero, but that wasn't about to stop this pilot.
17:06Things cleared up once the plane punched through the storm, though we imagine everyone on the plane was more anxious
17:12than usual.
17:13This video is a great example of trust and training.
17:17Since the pilot couldn't see, they had to rely on all their skills and communication with ATC for a safe
17:23takeoff.
17:24But maybe they should have just waited.
17:27Visibility can drop to zero during a dust storm.
17:30Particles ingested into the engine can cause them to lose power or fail.
17:34If any sand slips into the cockpit, it can cause problems with the electrical equipment.
17:39Well, that's all we have for you today.
17:40But if you enjoyed this video and want to see another just like it, then be sure to click the

17:46As always, thanks for watching, and we'll catch you in the next one.
