00:00That's better questions than some of you do.
00:07David, you started the second half really well.
00:10What could have become an awkward fixture?
00:12You managed to kind of avoid that with Isle Coraz's goal.
00:15I just wanted to know what your message was at half-time
00:17and how pleased you were to see them put it into action.
00:19I thought we played well in the first half as well.
00:21I thought, I was just telling the media there,
00:23I've probably had 100 of these games over my career
00:25and probably 99 of them have been rubbish.
00:28I thought tonight we actually played well enough.
00:31We weren't clinical enough, that would be what I would say about it.
00:34But football was fine.
00:35For the best part of 40 minutes we dominated.
00:37They probably had three or four minutes before half-time.
00:42So I had lots of things in it which I quite liked.
00:46Lots of things we could have done much better.
00:48But ultimately we had to navigate a side who had just won four in the bounce
00:52and started the league quite well.
00:55The players done okay.
00:58Really did, yeah.
00:59Was that your thinking behind naming such a strong side then?
01:01Just make sure you don't leave anything to do?
01:02Well, let's be fair.
01:03We wanted to try and give many players a game.
01:06But as you well know, I've not got any defenders.
01:09So I'm very limited to what I can choose defensive-wise really.
01:13Jake O'Brien, for example, has played every minute, I think,
01:16just a bit of every game in pre-season.
01:18So we're trying to find a little bit.
01:20We're trying to get Mikko back.
01:21We're trying to get Sheamus back for his first time.
01:25Who I thought has done really well.
01:27Just trying to get enough defenders really, that's the thing.
01:31One of the players who got a chance was Harrison Armstrong.
01:33He looked very good.
01:34I was wondering what you thought of his performance.
01:36Has he done enough in that to stay around the squad
01:39for the season beyond the transfer?
01:41We'll see.
01:42I thought Harrison played well.
01:43I thought Jimmy Gardner played very well as well.
01:45I thought both of them done.
01:46But Harrison, for his age, has done really well tonight
01:49and played well.
01:50So, yeah, there's a couple of options we've got for Harrison.
01:53So we'll decide over the next few days what we're going to do.
01:56I can just ask on Yusuf Chimiti.
01:58He wasn't in the squad.
01:59Was he injured or was that tactical?
02:00No, it was just a reason we've got.
02:02There might be a chance that he leaves.
02:04And if he does, then we'll just sort of make sure he's okay.
02:08Any further questions, Joyce?
02:11It was noticeable in your programme notes
02:14you spoke about Newcastle and Crystal Palace
02:16and they have to serve as inspiration.
02:18Is that all part of the raising the expectations
02:21that you want here?
02:23I know it's a long way to go, but it's good
02:25that you're sort of talking about that.
02:27Look, I want us to...
02:28We've not got European football here,
02:29and I'm saying I've had it for three or four years
02:32and I know how difficult it is to play Thursday, Sunday.
02:36So, I'm hoping that I don't see it too difficult
02:38if we've got a cup game on a Tuesday or Wednesday night
02:40to play again and go again.
02:42So I want us to try and be as strong as we can.
02:45But, I mean, you only need to...
02:47I listened to the radio going home last night
02:49from the training ground
02:50and every team had changed eight players,
02:52nine players, ten players.
02:54In some way, I think the media sometimes see that as a...
02:58Well, why are they doing that?
03:00What would they be doing that for?
03:01Why are they not playing their strongest team?
03:03Well, as a coach, you've got to manage all the players.
03:06You've got to manage everybody at the club.
03:07You've got to make sure everybody's included
03:09if you possibly can.
03:10So, that's why all the managers do it,
03:12keep changing their team.
03:13And look, in some occasions,
03:15quite a few teams come a cropper with it.
03:17But the managers see greater strength
03:21in giving all the players an opportunity
03:23to show what they can do.
03:24In terms of embracing the competition,
03:27that's a target for this new Everton and new...
03:29Yeah.
03:30I think that...
03:32Look, let's be fair,
03:33we're not a side which is going to be competitive enough,
03:36probably at the top end of the league.
03:37So we have to make sure that we try
03:39and be as competitive as we can in the Cups.
03:41But look, you could get a terrible Cup draw
03:43and you could be out.
03:44It's not because you don't want to be competitive.
03:46I think everybody wants to win the Cups.
03:48I don't think there's anybody who doesn't want to win them.
03:50Your draws in the Cups are very decisive
03:56in what you get.
03:57You could be saying you want to be a Cup team
03:59and you could get knocked out quite early.
04:02Harry?
04:03The second game in the new stadium,
04:05is it starting to feel like home?
04:07Yeah, I think everybody will be starting.
04:09But again, probably tonight,
04:1115 minutes late at the kick-off,
04:13probably due to everybody getting used to travelling in,
04:15for an evening game.
04:17You know, just about a sell-out tonight.
04:19It's amazing to get the numbers we got in tonight
04:22and for the game level we've got.
04:24But I really think that the crowd are playing a big part here
04:29and I think they're seen as trying to evolve
04:31and we're trying to get better.
04:33We're trying to bring in good attacking options
04:35and hopefully build on the strong defensive units
04:40that we've had over the last few years here
04:42and see if we can get a few more attacking players in as well.
04:46You mentioned Mansfield, four games on the top.
04:48What did you make of them tonight?
04:50I thought Mansfield done a good job.
04:53I thought they were...
04:54I thought we mainly controlled the game, if I was being honest.
04:56I thought they had some moments,
04:58but for most of it we were the side who were on top.
05:02But they've done a great job defensively
05:05and it'll stand them in good stead, you know,
05:08if they have to play against teams
05:09who are going to have a lot of the ball against them.
05:11I think they'll have a good bit of practice on how to defend.
05:15Finally, we'll go to Paddy.
05:18David, you mentioned the lack of defensive cover.
05:21Because of how the injury situation has been,
05:23is that something that might have to change
05:25with your transfer plans over the next week or so?
05:28Well, it already has changed a lot of my plans
05:30because obviously we're without Jared
05:33and we have been without Mikko for certainly the first couple of games.
05:37But you have to remember we had this at the end of last season as well.
05:39We've had it all through the summer.
05:41So it's not as if we've necessarily got it better.
05:44We've got people back but maybe they're injured.
05:47So I've just got to make sure that we're not short again if I can help it.
05:51Certainly we were short for the first two games in the Premier League.
05:55OK, thanks folks.
05:56Cheers, thank you.
