00:00It's not just the open wing, which, hold on a second.
00:03Hey!
00:04Now, back to Will and Dibby on 95.7 The Game.
00:08He's not just a great football broadcaster.
00:11No, no.
00:11You can hear, he knows how to put people in his place.
00:13Especially on this day of days, National Dog Day, Mark.
00:16National Dog Day is here, so we probably should get a little more info on who that dog is
00:21that Charles Davis was putting in its place last time he came on,
00:27and also last time he came on, it marked the continuation of the worst streak of my career,
00:34which is bringing Charles Davis on and continually saying that he works for a network
00:38for which he no longer works.
00:39All right, the blood pressure here then.
00:41Today is the day, Charles, where it finally goes away for good.
00:46We're going to break this damn thing right now.
00:48I have practiced all morning.
00:50Come on now.
00:51I'm going to clear my throat and let it out.
00:52Ladies and gentlemen, on River Island's guest line on 95.7 The Game,
00:56Charles Davis of CBS Sports joins us on the show.
01:02Charles, how are you doing?
01:04I'm doing great.
01:05I am doing great.
01:06Is it okay if I show my age to begin with?
01:09Of course.
01:11So what you just talked about there, like we all have those things, all right,
01:15where, okay, this is my equation to it, right, when you would always say to the other network.
01:21You remember Chevy Chase in European Vacation?
01:26Oh, yeah.
01:27When they got on the roundabout and he couldn't get off the roundabout?
01:31Big Ben, yes.
01:32Hey, kids, look at it.
01:32Big Ben.
01:33Right?
01:35That happens to all of us in some way, shape, fashion, form.
01:39Like anyone who's hearing our voices, just think to yourself,
01:42when you know you, there's something else you're supposed to say
01:45or something else you're supposed to do.
01:46When you keep coming back and doing it the other way and it drives you crazy,
01:50happens to absolutely all of us.
01:52To show my age, there was an episode of Mary Tyler Boer
01:56where Murray, the head writer, was writing for Ted Knight, who was the broadcaster.
02:04And back then, the broadcaster did everything, right?
02:07Like you name it, news, everything.
02:09They'd bring on John Amos to do sports once a season.
02:14I think that was early diversity for the network.
02:18Hey, there's Gordy.
02:19He's our sports guy.
02:21But the episode was there was a big-time person, head of a government,
02:29some sort of, with a very difficult name to say.
02:32And Murray was in the hole gambling or something,
02:35and he ended up betting Ted Knight that Ted couldn't pronounce the name correctly
02:39the first time on air.
02:40And Ted Knight spent the whole day at the network nailing it,
02:46rocking by Murray and just hitting him with it.
02:48Bam!
02:49Got it again.
02:50And, of course, as soon as the light came on, Ted choked and mispronounced the name.
02:55Murray won the bet, the whole deal.
02:58It happens to all of us.
03:00It happened to me in a game many, many, many years ago.
03:03I was working for TBF.
03:06We were doing Washington State hosting USC, Pete Carroll's tenure yesterday.
03:12Troy Polamalu was playing, which really isn't that difficult if you're into football.
03:17Guys, that entire day, I could not say Polamalu.
03:22To this day, the person who does my boards for the games, Sam,
03:28been a friend since we've been working back in the TBS days,
03:33at least once a month will tease me about not being able to say Troy Polamalu.
03:38I mean, I got so flustered during the game,
03:42but I couldn't get it.
03:46I had my head in my hands in the second quarter,
03:49and he and the crew have been laughing at me ever since.
03:53So, long way of saying, my man, you're not alone.
03:57The problem is, Polamalu probably had 17 tackles in that game.
04:03Well, here's the wild part.
04:05He sprained an ankle early and couldn't finish.
04:09And no, I did not want him out of the game, but at the same time.
04:16A little relief, right?
04:18A little relief.
04:19And by the way, when he's coming up at USC,
04:22Charles, some of these names, they take a minute.
04:25Like, they seem not difficult now.
04:27All of us can say Atentacompo.
04:29All of us can say Tonga Vailoa now,
04:32but we couldn't when we first met them.
04:33We were like, what is, I don't even know what to do with that name.
04:37You know what would be fun?
04:38What would be really fun is if you took all of us,
04:41and you notice I say us, okay?
04:43Because it's real easy for people to point fingers all the time,
04:46but if we're in the business, it's us, all right?
04:49Wouldn't it be fun to take all of those people you're naming, right,
04:52with all these names that now we can rattle off,
04:56and let's say their first season of playing,
04:58let's say within their first five to ten games,
05:01depending on whether it's football or basketball or whatever,
05:04and see how many different ways their names were pronounced early.
05:08Oh, man.
05:09Before we all got it.
05:10That would be a great blooper reel.
05:12You would find me absolutely butchering names,
05:16and I don't mean to because I want to get it right.
05:19I've had parents approach me about getting names right.
05:22Occasionally I've done it right, and they've been grateful.
05:25I've had parents go, hey, you messed up my kid's name, you know,
05:29and the last thing you want is mom upset
05:32because you didn't get their kid's name right.
05:35No doubt about it.
05:36So Charles Davis, CBS, like look at this habit that we're creating here.
05:41And that's a name we can all say.
05:43You like DiMaggio on the 16th Street now.
05:47You're rolling.
05:48We're hot, and plus we can start the conversation with a name
05:52that I think we can handle, and that's Juwan Jennings.
05:55So Charles, we've been sitting here in the Bay talking about this a lot
05:59with regard to, man, he's not, I mean, he's good, but he's not elite.
06:04He just signed a new deal last year, but his importance to the Niners is clear.
06:09They're banged up at the position, and here we are on cut down day
06:13still dealing with this.
06:14So how do you see this from his perspective and the teams?
06:19It's one of those deals where everything that you've said
06:22is laid out perfectly, but right now you'd have to say
06:26things have tipped to his advantage
06:27because of everything that's going on at the position.
06:31People hurt, nothing's solidified, what's happening there.
06:35It works for him because of that.
06:38The Super Bowl appearance does not hurt one bit.
06:42That lingers in the minds of the public and people who like the team.
06:46The other part of it is he is so darn reliable for a quarterback.
06:51You can go there and get completions even though you say to yourself,
06:54I'm not sure how we do that.
06:56Look, you go back to his timing, go back to his combine, right?
07:00He ran a time that in a lot of cases kind of disqualifies a receiver,
07:05but I keep telling people all the time,
07:08sometimes you have to get past certain things.
07:11Maybe his bio rhythms were off.
07:13Maybe he runs it a little bit faster later,
07:15but does he find ways to get open and make plays, okay?
07:19This kid who's a rookie out of Miami,
07:22I don't know he's going to make up the Tennessee Titans,
07:24Xavier Restrepo.
07:26He ran 4-8-1 at the combine this year, and that killed him.
07:29He doesn't get drafted, but somehow he caught 200 passes in college, okay?
07:35Anquan Bolden is maybe my favorite one,
07:37who I think was a 4'8-plus 40-yard dash guy
07:41and caught 100 balls as a rookie.
07:44Strength, agility, timing, route running.
07:48Sometimes we have to get past the stopwatch,
07:50and Jennings has proven that during his career
07:53that the stopwatch doesn't rule who he is as a player.
07:56Otherwise, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
08:00And the conversation is made more fascinating to me
08:03by the fact that Kyle Shanahan's been able to do more
08:06with lesser at receiver and certainly running back.
08:10How much of the Shanahan factor plays into the stalemate
08:14insofar as maybe Kyle Shanahan thinks that he can find
08:17the next Jawan Jennings in his system?
08:20Kyle Shanahan, I'm not speaking for him.
08:23I'm speaking as an observational person of him.
08:29In my mind, Kyle Shanahan always believes
08:31he can find someone else.
08:33He always believes he can find another player
08:37to do and scheme for and create.
08:41He always believes that whoever he steps in
08:43and puts out on the field,
08:44he'll find a way to make them better that day.
08:47And the truth of the matter is,
08:48his track record says he can and has.
08:51That's what it comes down to.
08:53Very few people are we going to talk about,
08:56I think, can scheme and call a game
08:59the way Kyle Shanahan can.
09:02I mean, there are times people in this league, right?
09:04Let's face it, guys.
09:05You know what it's like when we talk about
09:07people coming out of college, right?
09:10Quarterbacks who have to have throw
09:12with better anticipation.
09:14How many times have we relayed the same story?
09:16Every one of us is broadcasters.
09:18When the quarterback gets to training camp in the NFL
09:20after being in college
09:21and doesn't throw the football,
09:23the coach goes,
09:24son, why don't you throw the ball?
09:26Coach, he wasn't really open.
09:28Son, in this league, that is open.
09:30You got to find a way to put it in there, right?
09:33Because defensive backs are better, quicker,
09:35the windows are tighter, et cetera, et cetera.
09:38My point is,
09:39how many times have you watched a 49ers game
09:40and guys are wide open?
09:42And, like, clearly, yards.
09:45No one around.
09:46That scheme is awfully effective.
09:49And that's why I think, you know,
09:50if you're Kyle Shanahan, you're like,
09:51okay, I don't have everybody I want,
09:53but I'll find a way to make what I have better.
09:56And I always come back to,
09:58years ago, I was working for,
10:00I'm not going to say it, Mark,
10:01because it'll get you going on.
10:03It'll break your streak.
10:05It was a different network, okay?
10:08And that was when 49ers weren't very good.
10:11But we had ball games
10:12where we're watching quarterbacks play.
10:16And you know where I'm going with this, right?
10:19And all of a sudden, they are viable.
10:21Were the 49ers winning games?
10:23No.
10:24But they were scaring the heck out of people.
10:26We had a game in Philadelphia.
10:28And who was it?
10:30Bethard.
10:31C.J. Bethard played.
10:33And all of a sudden,
10:34they're scaring the heck out of the Eagles.
10:36And you're saying,
10:36how the heck did they do that?
10:38Made Nick Mullins look extremely viable.
10:42Are those guys threats to go to the Hall of Fame?
10:44No.
10:44Are they truly starting the NFL?
10:45No.
10:46But in that system,
10:48if you do the things that he teaches you
10:49and you have the quick twitch
10:51and the reaction and all that,
10:53you can be viable in that system.
10:55He has always been able to do that.
10:56I've always been a big admirer of Kyle Shanahan
10:58and how he does things.
11:00Charles Davis is with us here on Willard and Dibs.
11:03We are live at Splash at Thrive City
11:05on 95.7 The Game.
11:06Charles,
11:07is the wide receiver market,
11:08is it out of whack right now
11:11with how much these guys are getting paid?
11:14I don't think so
11:15because this is where we ring the bell.
11:17I always come back to the Jerry Glanville,
11:19the old man in black, right?
11:22Yo,
11:22you got to run the football,
11:23make sure you set a tone
11:24and get some kind of identity.
11:26But when it's time to ring that bell,
11:29which is one of his favorite expressions,
11:30right?
11:31When it's time to ring that bell,
11:32you got to be able to throw the football.
11:34And that's where the game is.
11:37When I was younger,
11:38since I've already revealed my age,
11:40right?
11:40And where I am
11:41and what TV I was watching
11:43because there are people listening
11:44and going,
11:44Mary Tyler Moore,
11:45what the hell are you talking about?
11:46Right?
11:47Look,
11:48when I was younger,
11:49you ran around,
11:50the jersey you wore
11:51in your neighborhood
11:52had a running back's number on it.
11:55Okay?
11:56Who was your favorite runner?
11:58Because that runner
11:59was getting 20,
11:5925 carries a game.
12:01He was a lead runner.
12:02There was no second runner.
12:04Right?
12:05That person,
12:05that guy was the dude.
12:08Kids coming out of Texas
12:10ran all wishbone stuff.
12:12The only time they caught the ball
12:13was when it was pitched in the air
12:15on an option pitch.
12:17Now,
12:17you go to the state of Texas,
12:19what are they giving us?
12:21Pitchers and catchers.
12:23Wide receivers and quarterbacks.
12:25Runners?
12:26Yeah.
12:27But you guys know
12:28where we are with runners.
12:29We keep talking about
12:30last year was the year
12:31of the runner.
12:31We brought the runner
12:32back into the game.
12:34How many of them
12:34really cashed in off of that?
12:37It's still
12:38throwing the football
12:39is the way that we get
12:40that ball going.
12:41It's the way that we create points.
12:42It's the way that we do things.
12:44How we hunt big plays.
12:46Eight times out of ten,
12:47nine times out of ten.
12:48And Pulse is like,
12:51we're going to throw it.
12:53We're going to throw it.
12:54It's just very hard
12:55to put a
12:56true ground and pound
12:58offense together
12:59with today's rules,
13:00CBA,
13:02how often you're in pads,
13:04all those things.
13:05And
13:06I'll say it.
13:08If you're an offensive coordinator
13:09or a guy who calls plays,
13:11you don't get a ton of credit
13:14if your team runs people
13:15into oblivion.
13:16you're not known as a genius
13:18unless you're throwing it around.
13:22Doesn't that then make
13:23Kyle Shanahan
13:23the exception to the rule?
13:25Because as you know,
13:26they go 21 personnel,
13:27two backs,
13:28and one tight end
13:28more than anyone.
13:29And they run it successfully.
13:31And now they have
13:31Brian Robinson.
13:32So
13:33is Shanahan zigging
13:34while the rest of the league
13:35zags?
13:37Always has,
13:37though,
13:38when you think about it.
13:39The first Super Bowl year,
13:41maybe I'm wrong,
13:43but I'm guessing
13:43I'm in the neighborhood.
13:44The two playoff games
13:46before the Super Bowl,
13:47didn't the 49ers run it
13:48like 8,000 times?
13:51And Jimmy Garoppolo
13:52threw it 10 times or less
13:53in both games?
13:55It definitely did
13:55in the NFC title game
13:56against Green Bay.
13:57I think he had
13:58eight pass attempts.
13:59Yeah,
13:59I can't remember
14:00the week before.
14:00I can't remember
14:01what it was before,
14:02but it wasn't much.
14:03I know Raheem Mostert
14:04just kept running
14:05into the goal post.
14:06That's all I remember.
14:07So
14:08he's always been that,
14:11right?
14:11And remember
14:12where he came from
14:13on that?
14:13He came out of the womb
14:14watching Dad
14:15run the heck out
14:16of the football,
14:16watching his father
14:17create 1,000-yard runners
14:19out of guys
14:19you've never heard of
14:20before or since.
14:22Remember that?
14:23It seemed like every year
14:23they'd have a different guy
14:24and a different guy
14:25run for 1,000 yards
14:26because they had
14:26such an incredible scheme.
14:28They did such a great job
14:29with it,
14:29and they were willing
14:30to stick with it.
14:32Kyle has the best mix
14:33of it in the NFL
14:34in terms of
14:35having the patience
14:36and the willingness
14:37to stay with the run
14:38and create that,
14:40but not afraid
14:41to throw the football
14:42when necessary
14:43or be able to create
14:44the big plays
14:45off of the run game
14:46and throw it.
14:47So
14:47he's not zagging
14:49at this point.
14:50This is what he's
14:51always been.
14:52When he has great teams,
14:53we get to see it
14:54much more on display
14:55because they play
14:56the bigger games.
14:56We see them all the time
14:57get into the playoffs,
14:58the whole deal.
14:59But he's always been
15:00like that.
15:01Charles,
15:01last year was such
15:02a weird year
15:03and everybody has
15:04their thoughts
15:05and reasons
15:06as to why
15:06a highly favored
15:08Niner team
15:08would go 6-11.
15:09What do you see
15:11this year
15:11in terms of
15:12a bounce back,
15:13in terms of
15:13the NFC West?
15:15What's your thought?
15:16I just think
15:17a healthy Niners team
15:18is right back
15:19in the mix.
15:20It's funny
15:21because just a couple
15:22years ago
15:22the best division
15:23in football
15:23was probably
15:24the NFC West,
15:25right?
15:26We had three teams
15:26go to the playoffs.
15:28We thought the Cardinals
15:30were on the rise
15:31and as it turned out
15:32last year,
15:33the Cardinals
15:34led the division
15:34with what,
15:35four or five games
15:36to go.
15:37Couldn't hold
15:37the division lead.
15:39At the end of it,
15:40Los Angeles won it.
15:41San Francisco
15:42had a ton of injuries,
15:43couldn't compete
15:43in that part of it.
15:45Seattle was right there
15:46with an opportunity.
15:47In fact,
15:47they're the ones
15:48who put the hit
15:49on Arizona
15:50and started them
15:51on their slide
15:51on out of it.
15:53So we were used,
15:54you know,
15:54we're used to that
15:55out in the West,
15:56okay?
15:57I think the Rams
15:58consistency
15:59at different times
16:01has probably
16:02surprised people,
16:03but I give them
16:03a ton of credit.
16:04Sean McVay
16:05after we got
16:06through those
16:07couple of years
16:08of every year
16:10wondering,
16:10should I coach?
16:11Should I not?
16:12What should I do?
16:12Should I do this?
16:13Should I do that?
16:14We haven't heard
16:15that in a while,
16:15have we?
16:16He's back.
16:17He's fully in
16:18and boy,
16:18they do a nice job.
16:20Mike McDonald's team,
16:21they battled real hard,
16:22have a new quarterback
16:23to go.
16:24I just think the 49ers
16:26with good health
16:26and getting Robert
16:27Salah back
16:28as a defensive coordinator
16:29is a big,
16:29big deal for this team.
16:31I think they're
16:31right in this mix.
16:32I really do.
16:33To me,
16:34the interesting team,
16:35the most interesting team
16:36and one to watch
16:37is Arizona
16:38because they're
16:40at this point now
16:41with Jonathan Gannon
16:42and his crew
16:43where people have liked
16:45the potential
16:46of Arizona.
16:47They've liked
16:48Jonathan Gannon
16:48and what he's done.
16:51Drew Petsig
16:52on offense
16:52as a coordinator,
16:53Nick Rollis
16:54on defense.
16:55I'm on record
16:56as being fully in
16:57with those guys.
16:58I really,
16:59really like them.
17:00But at the end
17:01of the day,
17:01it's a true
17:01results-based league.
17:03They can't just be,
17:05hey,
17:05they're on the rise,
17:06they're making it.
17:07It has to come to fruition.
17:09And I feel like
17:10there's a lot of pressure
17:11in their area
17:12to be a playoff team.
17:14So it's going to be
17:15interesting to see
17:15how they come out
17:16of the gate and play.
17:18Yeah,
17:18the West is feeling
17:19somewhat wide open.
17:21You mentioned
17:21Robert Salah.
17:22They only bring back
17:23six defensive starters
17:24for a team
17:25that was 29th
17:26in points allowed.
17:27How big of an impact
17:29can one man,
17:30in this case,
17:30Robert Salah,
17:31make on a very young defense?
17:34I think he can make
17:35a huge difference
17:36because that's how he
17:37worked his way up
17:38through the system
17:39and became a head coach.
17:40You know,
17:41developing guys,
17:43seeing something in them
17:44that other people
17:44didn't see,
17:45maybe putting them
17:46in spots that people
17:47didn't anticipate.
17:48Fred Warner would be
17:49Exhibit A,
17:50right?
17:51You know,
17:52the guy was at
17:53nickel safety in college.
17:54They turned him
17:54into a middle linebacker.
17:56He's going to
17:56waltz in and wear
17:57a gold jacket one day.
17:59All right?
18:00In New York,
18:02he did that.
18:03Remember his first,
18:03I think,
18:04one of their early drafts,
18:05they drafted like
18:05two or three safeties
18:07with the idea
18:08that two of them
18:09at least were going
18:09to be moved
18:10to linebacker.
18:11And it worked out
18:12pretty well last year,
18:13Jamie and Sherwood.
18:13And he ended up
18:15playing awfully well
18:16for them.
18:17I just use that
18:18as examples
18:18of seeing players,
18:20seeing something
18:21that maybe other people
18:22didn't see,
18:23and developing
18:24and honing
18:24that skill.
18:27I just think
18:28there's going to be
18:28a bunch of guys
18:29chomping at the bit
18:30to play for him
18:30and to play well.
18:32So it wouldn't surprise
18:33me at all
18:33to see the 49ers defense
18:35play maybe better
18:36than what projections
18:37are in terms of
18:38who's back,
18:39big-time names,
18:41things of that nature.
18:42All right, Charles.
18:43Before you go,
18:44I want to ask you
18:45when I say,
18:46hey,
18:46what'd you think
18:47of the news of the day?
18:48Does your mind go
18:49to Shadur Sanders
18:50made the Browns
18:51or Travis Kelsey's
18:53marrying Taylor Swift?
18:56Shadur Sanders
18:57making the Browns
18:57to me was a fait accompli.
18:59I mean,
19:00when they kept talking
19:00about keeping
19:01four quarterbacks,
19:02I actually called
19:02a friend of mine
19:03who's a former GM
19:03in the league.
19:04I said,
19:04did you ever keep
19:05four quarterbacks?
19:06He's like,
19:06no.
19:09He's like,
19:09no.
19:10He said,
19:10that means there's
19:10something in the work
19:11somewhere.
19:12They're trying to,
19:12they're going to move
19:13somebody.
19:14And we talked
19:15our way through it
19:16and I just said,
19:17okay,
19:17if I say to you,
19:18there's no way
19:20to get rid of the two
19:21rookies because next
19:22year they have
19:22two first round picks,
19:24right?
19:24They've acquired
19:25a second first round
19:26pick.
19:27It's supposed to be
19:27a huge quarterback
19:28year coming out
19:29of college football.
19:30You start with Flacco,
19:32but if somehow
19:33you're one in three,
19:34I said to me,
19:35you got to play
19:35the two youngsters
19:36and see what you have,
19:37don't you?
19:38And he agreed with me.
19:39He said,
19:39to me,
19:40that's how I would see it.
19:41And I said,
19:41Kenny Pickett's
19:43odd man out
19:43somehow,
19:44some way.
19:45He gets traded,
19:46off he goes.
19:46obviously the news
19:48of the day
19:49was the engagement
19:50because I was at
19:52my favorite sandwich
19:53shop and news
19:55hit my phone.
19:57I kid you not.
19:58I'm in a sandwich
19:58shop.
19:59It's not a sports
20:00sandwich shop.
20:01And you know what
20:01happened?
20:02The buzz happened.
20:03All of a sudden
20:04people were like,
20:04oh my God,
20:06oh my God,
20:06they're engaged.
20:08They're engaged.
20:09Those two have
20:10crossed over from
20:11sports and entertainment
20:12to simply cultural
20:13zeitgeist.
20:15Charles,
20:15I shared the story
20:16on air earlier today.
20:17I did something
20:18I shouldn't do
20:19because she was in
20:19school,
20:20but my 16-year-old
20:21daughter,
20:21I texted her
20:22and all I said
20:23was,
20:23I assume you
20:24heard the news
20:25and she just
20:26said yes.
20:27We didn't even
20:28need to say
20:28what it was.
20:29She knew exactly
20:31what I was talking
20:32about right away.
20:33My dad taught
20:34for 40-something
20:35years.
20:36He got out
20:36before cell phones
20:37became a real
20:38thing.
20:40I could see him.
20:41Right now,
20:42somewhere he's
20:42in New York State.
20:44Just like
20:44sensing what
20:45you just said,
20:46like,
20:47yeah,
20:47parent texted
20:48the kid in
20:49the middle of
20:49class.
20:50That's just
20:50crazy.
20:51About a tight
20:52end marrying
20:53a pop star.
20:54About a tight
20:54end marrying
20:54a superstar.
20:57It's bad
20:57parenting.
20:58There's no
20:58two ways about
20:59it.
20:59I'm guilty.
21:00Hey,
21:00by the way,
21:01you're not
21:02alone,
21:02okay?
21:03If my kids
21:05were still in
21:06school,
21:06I might have
21:07driven over
21:07there and said,
21:08hey,
21:08did you guys
21:08hear?
21:09Right.
21:09I was about
21:10to text my
21:11three-year-old,
21:11but I remembered
21:12she doesn't have
21:12a phone yet,
21:13Charles.
21:13She doesn't?
21:15You're waiting.
21:16And guess what?
21:17You just made
21:18the case for her
21:19to get one at
21:19three.
21:20Like,
21:20how do I miss
21:21this news,
21:21dad?
21:21If I had a
21:22phone,
21:22I wouldn't
21:23have missed
21:23it.
21:23That's right,
21:24Charles.
21:24Charles,
21:25you're the best,
21:26man.
21:26Thank you so
21:27much,
21:27as always.
21:29Appreciate you
21:30guys very much.
21:31You take care of
21:31yourselves.
21:32Have a great
21:32season.
21:33conным going on.
21:37We'll also
21:38see you next time.
