00:00It's time for La Vuelta to say goodbye to Italy as we head over the border to France
00:05on stage four. The race returns to Spain tomorrow and the locals have certainly enjoyed their
00:10time in Piemonte.
00:12It was really nice, so I think I can't forget this. Really nice. Also today another important
00:21stage. I know the way, I know the valley in the start. For sure I need to suffer a
00:26lot, but yeah, for sure this 25 can remember well.
00:32As Ganna said, there's a tough start to the stage with three climbs in the first 80k, but
00:37after that it's all downhill. Keeping the red jersey isn't necessarily a priority for Visma
00:41Lisa bike, but after two second places, Lidl Trek are determined to land a win with Mads
00:46Pedersen.
00:47Yeah, the first 80k, they will be, I think, really fast and hard with these two long climbs,
00:56and then we'll be long downhill and flat. On the paper it's a good stage for him and we
01:03see now the situation at the start, if we can manage or, yeah, we see during the stage.
01:10For EF Education Easy Post it's all about targeting the breakaways, as we saw with Sean Quinn yesterday.
01:16The American believes their persistence will pay off.
01:20Like I said, we're going to try and go for a stage win and that's just part of the process.
01:25Get in the break every day and try and be the best in the breakaway and if we can do that
01:30for 15 days then eventually we think we'll win a stage. So, yeah, it's not like it's a victory,
01:38but it's good to know that if we keep trying it, it will happen eventually.
01:45At nearly 207km, Stage 4 is the longest of this Vuelta. There are two second category climbs,
01:51the Col de Mont-Genevre and the Col du Lauterre, before a long downhill sweep to Grenoble.
01:56And there are quite a few twists and turns in the final, before a slight uphill drag to the finish line.
02:04Well, today's live broadcast only began after all the climbing was done. A group of five riders
02:10leading the way down the long descent of the Lauterre. Sean Quinn, yesterday's most combative
02:14rider, with Joel Nicolaou, who was in the break on Stage 1, Louis Fafaka, Camille Bonheur
02:20and Mario Aparicio. Nicolaou becoming the virtual king of the mountains over the early climbs.
02:25The riders heading into the final 100km of this long stage, with just over a minute separating
02:37the five leaders and the peloton. And nobody had been dropped from the main bunch, meaning
02:41the sprinters would also be in the mix for the stage win, despite nearly 3000m of climbing.
02:52With Lidltrek once again setting the tempo, the peloton soon caught up to the breakaway.
02:58The last man to accept defeat was Aparicio, who's making his Grand Tour debut for the Burgos
03:03team.
03:05He doesn't want to be caught by the peloton. He'd be hoping that a couple might jump across
03:10at some point, sooner rather than later.
03:11Well, once Aparicio was caught, one of his teammates countered. Sinue Fernandez, another
03:21Grand Tour rookie who was already on the attack on Stage 2. Nobody else fancied joining the
03:2625-year-old, with the mood fairly relaxed in the peloton. No major stress today for the
03:31race leader, Jonas Vingegaard.
03:35Lidltrek are still plugging away, as Fernandez pulled around 30 seconds clear.
03:40He spent 35km alone at the front, but the peloton brought him back before the intermediate sprint.
03:50This was two for the price of one, with some riders chasing points and others eyeing up
03:55the bonus seconds, notably David Godew. The Frenchman had a chance to move ahead of Vingegaard
04:00and take the red jersey if he could finish inside the top three. Lidltrek leading out for Pedersen.
04:05It's Matt Pedersen who opens things up. Ethan Vernon right on the wheel, as is Jake Stewart,
04:12but David Godew isn't going to get there for the bonus seconds.
04:15Well, Godew was forced to settle for 5th place, so no change in GC. Pedersen looking strong,
04:21as he outpaced Vernon and Stewart.
04:26Well, just after the sprint, another rider decided to go on a solo jaunt. This time it was
04:31the French time trial champion, Bruno Armouray. The Decathlon AG2R man pulling around 45 seconds
04:37clear, but there was never any serious danger for the sprint teams. They soon began to get
04:42themselves organised, eating into the Frenchman's advantage.
04:47Well, Bruno Armouray, he waves goodbye. A valiant effort from the Frenchman from Decathlon AG2R Le Mondial.
04:53He's being hunted down by a fast-moving peloton.
04:59Well, very fast-moving indeed. The sprint seems really kicking things up a gear as they approach
05:04Voiron, where there'd be lots of changes in direction and some tricky roundabouts.
05:08Ultimately, though, it would come down to another bunch sprint.
05:12Matt Pedersen up towards the front. Moving forward now is Fabio Christen of Q36.5.
05:20He's wanting to try and challenge for a stage victory. Plankard on the front.
05:24He takes the sweeping left-hand turn with 350 metres to go.
05:28Philipsen locked right in the wheel right now. Look at the Belgian. He sits second wheel.
05:33He's going to be challenged by Ethan Vernon. He's going to try and go early.
05:36Ben Turner's trying to come round inside the final 200 metres. We move forward.
05:41It's Philipsen who's got the commanding position. Ben Turner's coming through the centre.
05:46Ben Turner, the British rider, is going to take his Grand Tour stage victory.
05:53An incredible moment for Ben Turner, who wasn't even supposed to be at this Vuelta.
05:57He was hooked from the Renui Tour last week to replace a sick Lucas Hamilton.
06:02Now he has a first Grand Tour stage win, coming hot on the heels of a first World Tour win in Poland.
06:08It was such a crazy week. The team really believed in me. I went to Renui and then they said they needed me.
06:22So, yeah, of course, you say yeah. I mean, I'd do anything to race these races.
06:28And just the last few weeks have been incredible. And also like what all the boys did today.
06:34And we are so like just unbelievable in Poland and here. And for sure all the results I had the last weeks wouldn't be without him.
06:41So, it's just amazing, you know.
06:51Big Ben timing it to perfection to beat Philipsen, whose lead-out man, Plankard, finished third.
06:56Still no joy for Little Trek though, with Pedersen down in sixth.
07:00Well, Godou did end up with the red jersey thanks to a better finishing position than Vingegaard.
07:05Tomorrow he will wear the leader's jersey of a Grand Tour for the very first time.
07:12There was some measure of consolation for Pedersen as he recovered the green jersey.
07:16The down has a slender lead over Vernon and Philipsen.
07:20Nicolau is the new king of the mountains with a two-point lead over Quinn.
07:24It's the first time that Caja Rural have led this classification in a decade.
07:29And Juan Ayuso is still the best young rider, although Valentin Paripantra, who was second this morning,
07:34has abandoned the race due to illness.
07:37Tomorrow we'll be back in Spain for the all-important team time trial around Figueres.
07:41Join us then and thanks for watching.
