00:00Hi, I'm Dave Swiggs. I'm the Wastewater Director for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly
00:05and today I'm here at Newquay Wastewater Treatment Works to talk about
00:09the fantastic work my team do for the preparation and recovery following the Board Masters event.
00:14While tens of thousands of people attended the Board Masters event, many people are still here
00:18enjoying the local area and that does put additional strain on our wastewater systems.
00:24Preparation for the event started over 10 months ago and over 40 Southwest Water colleagues and
00:29support from the supply chain do everything they need to do to make sure the site is adequately
00:33prepared to deal with the loading from the event. A wastewater treatment works is a biological process
00:39and they're normally specifically designed to deal with a certain strength for sewage and as you can
00:43imagine all of the holiday makers in Newquay in their numbers enjoying the fine foods and local
00:49ciders that are available in the area can increase that strength significantly. So not only is preparation
00:56key, a lot of effort also needs to go back into bringing the site back into normal operation.
01:02As part of the preparation we bring in additional treatment to site but as the people are starting
01:07to leave the area taking that treatment back offline needs to be a very carefully managed process.
01:14I'd like to say a massive thank you to all of the teams that have worked tirelessly over the
01:17last few weeks to make sure that the festival can go without a hitch.
