00:00There was a well-documented and very detailed review of these environmental reforms or the
00:09Environmental Act.
00:11This particular one has a rather long title, by the way, of the Environment Protection
00:18Biodiversity Conservation Act.
00:21So these proposed reforms have been in the works for some five years now, but there's
00:25been a lack of progress in terms of securing support to get them through.
00:30The government says that they'll now introduce this overhaul of that Act six months earlier
00:38than initially planned, saying that there was an increase in consensus for support that
00:43there was a need to modernise the Act that came out of last week's productivity roundtable
00:49here in Canberra.
00:50Environment Minister Murray-Watt says that this package of reforms will now be much broader.
00:56Here's what he had to say.
00:57What we know is that we simply will not achieve our national priorities like building more
01:02homes, delivering more renewable energy and, of course, protecting the environment unless
01:07if we see significant reform.
01:09And by way of what this change will mean or entail, the government says that it will include
01:15a list of national environmental standards and will also work to reduce duplication between
01:23the Environment Act and other climate-related acts, with the overall aim of speeding up housing
01:30approvals without being detrimental to the environment.
