Leo, a former convict, is living in seclusion on an island with his step-daughter, the daughter of his late wife. Leo was framed by a group of former business associates, and he also suspects that one of them killed his wife. He has invited the group to his island, tempting them by hinting about a hidden fortune, and he has installed a number of traps and secret passages in his home. He is aided in his efforts by a former cell-mate who holds a grudge against the same persons. When everyone arrives, the atmosphere of mutual suspicion and the thick fog that covers the island promise a tense and hazardous weekend for everyone.CAST

00:00:30Oh, my God.
00:01:00Oh, my God.
00:01:30Oh, my God.
00:01:59Oh, my God.
00:02:29Oh, my God.
00:02:59I thought you were out of bed.
00:03:01I thought you had, Leo.
00:03:03Oh, my God.
00:03:33I hadn't realized that the name Leo Granger was still a headline news.
00:03:38I never imagined that the press would revive the whole dirty mess again.
00:03:41I thought you were dead.
00:03:43Oh, my God.
00:03:44I have remained isolated here for a long while.
00:03:48But that's no reason for you to stay buried on this forsaken island.
00:03:54Leo, I don't hold you accountable for the position I find myself in.
00:03:58It's just that for the president's police, I, too, would like to avoid the public.
00:04:05In fact, for a while, I'd like not to see anybody.
00:04:08And I'm afraid that won't be possible, Gail, if you insist on remaining here.
00:04:13Why?
00:04:14There are a few people I must see.
00:04:17Some, shall we say, associates.
00:04:23You're going to let them come out here?
00:04:26I'm going to invite them out here.
00:04:27Surely you don't think they'd accept your invitation.
00:04:30But they'd be afraid to.
00:04:32I have an idea that their greed will outweigh their fear.
00:04:35Their greed?
00:04:36Yes.
00:04:37It was their greed that made them invest heavily with me.
00:04:41Because they thought I could make more money for them than anyone else.
00:04:44And when my financial empire crashed, they were the first to cry Swimba.
00:04:49If I can intimate to them, they will have a chance of sharing in that supposed mood.
00:04:55They'll respond to my invitation.
00:05:04What was that?
00:05:05I was just knocking on my pipe, dear.
00:05:08No, I meant that noise outside.
00:05:10It sounded like a branch of a tree.
00:05:13The wind must be coming up.
00:05:14I'll go and see.
00:05:32What is it, Doc?
00:05:33I thought you might put me up, Leon.
00:05:36What are you wanted for this time?
00:05:38Oh, merely petty loss.
00:05:39I had to eat.
00:05:41I couldn't get a job after serving my term with you.
00:05:44The newspapers printed our pictures again.
00:05:46Everybody recognized.
00:05:49It won't be convenient to keep you here too long.
00:05:52I've invited some of our friends over for the weekend.
00:05:55That crowd that sent us up?
00:05:57How did you know that?
00:05:58You were more confidential as my cellmate than as my employer.
00:06:03You were less of a menace behind prison bars than you were in my accountant's cage.
00:06:07I have the same score to settle with that crowd that you have.
00:06:11I could be of help to you.
00:06:13You might.
00:06:15Let's talk it over.
00:06:17Go to the small door under this balcony.
00:06:20It's open.
00:06:21Wait for me there.
00:06:23Won't be too long.
00:06:25I said wait for me there.
00:06:26Leo, I've been thinking.
00:06:48I believe I've discovered why you failed in business.
00:06:51You surrounded yourself with the wrong people.
00:06:53I didn't surround myself with them.
00:06:55Sylvia Jordan did.
00:06:56How could she?
00:06:58Blackmail?
00:06:59Practically.
00:07:00As my secretary, she knew a lot about my private affairs, which gave her a certain amount of influence.
00:07:05Then when I married your mother instead of her, Sylvia became vitriolic.
00:07:10She sold me after her friends, Richfield, Kavanaugh, the whole double-crossing gang that railroaded me.
00:07:17I wouldn't have cared if that stopped at that, but they didn't.
00:07:20One of them, maybe the whole group indirectly, was responsible for the death of your mother.
00:07:26Leo, what are you saying?
00:07:27Leo, what are you saying?
00:07:27Oh, the certainties surrounding the murder of your mother was obviously prearranged.
00:07:35Isn't it logical, Gail, that this group, having put me safely away in prison, should come back here to learn from karma, the whereabouts of the fortune I was supposed to have sorted away?
00:07:47Failing, they struck her down fatally.
00:07:53And they ransacked the place until they were disturbed by the launch returning with the servants.
00:07:58But if any of them did murder Mother, do you think they risk coming back out here?
00:08:02Now, don't forget, they didn't get what they came after.
00:08:10I tell you, they won't accept.
00:08:13Well, let's wait and see.
00:08:14Well, let's wait and see.
00:08:44Well, let's wait and see.
00:09:14I was in growth casting a horoscope, otherwise I would have known it was you wanting to contact me.
00:09:21You received an invitation?
00:09:23Wait a minute.
00:09:28Let me see.
00:09:30It's from Leo Granger, inviting you to a weekend at Fog Island.
00:09:35Just a minute.
00:09:36Furthermore, I can tell you the date.
00:09:40It's for the 16th.
00:09:44What?
00:09:45Well, of course my powers of divination haven't diminished.
00:09:48What do you make of it, Emily?
00:09:49Well, are you consulting me professionally as an astrologist or socially as a friend?
00:09:54Well, I thought he was a good friend of old standing.
00:09:58In that case, I'd say Leo wanted something.
00:10:00Advice.
00:10:02As you may recall, he never went into any big ventures without first consulting me.
00:10:06Yes.
00:10:07And you never advised him without first asking John Cavanaugh what to tell him.
00:10:12Cavanaugh was very generous with me when I influenced Leo's transactions.
00:10:16Yes.
00:10:17And your influence paid you well.
00:10:19However, I'm curious to know what you think Leo's up to.
00:10:22Well, I, for one, am going out to Fog Island to find out.
00:10:25And you?
00:10:27I don't know yet.
00:10:28I haven't decided.
00:10:30Nevertheless, I'll probably see you out there amongst the others.
00:10:34And just, uh, who would the others be?
00:10:37Why, our own little crowd, of course.
00:10:40John Cavanaugh, Sylvia Jordan, and...
00:10:43Yes, that's right.
00:10:45What is Leo Granger to say, John?
00:10:52How do you know this is from Leo Granger?
00:10:54This is private secretary for years.
00:10:55I might at least be expected to recognize his handwriting, don't you think?
00:10:58Oh, of course.
00:11:00Have you read between the lines?
00:11:02Read what?
00:11:03That I might see justice done.
00:11:06Well?
00:11:07Doesn't it occur to you that Leo may have found out how you played up to karma while he was out of the way?
00:11:12I didn't.
00:11:13I always liked karma.
00:11:14There was no point in avoiding her.
00:11:15Just because he got into trouble.
00:11:17And there was no point, I suppose, in your chartering that boat all by yourself just to call on her at Fog Island.
00:11:23Who said I chartered a boat?
00:11:24The man who owned it.
00:11:26He also admitted taking a veiled woman out to the island, alone.
00:11:28I never wear veils.
00:11:30Besides, why should I want to see karma?
00:11:32To get information.
00:11:33That needn't exclude you in Leo's mind as one of Alex Henchman.
00:11:36How do you know that?
00:11:37I know Leo Granger.
00:11:39I know the way his mind works.
00:11:41He's a very suspicious and vindictive man.
00:11:45I know about Kingsley.
00:11:46Emily Bronston.
00:11:47Yes, even you.
00:11:48Don't forget the damaging effect your testimonies his private secretary had on the case.
00:11:52I'm not forgetting him.
00:11:53Nevertheless, I don't expect Leo ever to forgive me.
00:11:56Leo Granger will never forgive any one of us.
00:11:58Five years in the penitentiary can do a lot to a man.
00:12:02Not to Leo Granger.
00:12:04You get one of these?
00:12:07The same?
00:12:08Identically.
00:12:09And I dare say there's a half a dozen others floating around amongst our erstwhile associates.
00:12:14Should you go?
00:12:15I think so.
00:12:17You're not afraid?
00:12:18Are you?
00:12:19Well, not exactly afraid, but, uh...
00:12:22But what?
00:12:23Maybe intrigued.
00:12:25After all, he got away with quite a fortune.
00:12:27If he's going to pay off, I want to be there.
00:12:30That's what I thought.
00:12:31And if you go, I'll go.
00:12:33And if we go, the others will go.
00:12:36Well, they...
00:12:38There's safety in numbers.
00:12:57and if we go, the others will see you...
00:13:00I need to pay off.
00:13:01You thought, it would be a great sloth.
00:13:02But I'd be able to find your mistakes.
00:13:02This will be a great sloth.
00:13:03You can't give up.
00:13:04Well, just to the others,
00:13:04I'm afraid to gain.
00:13:05This will also vary.
00:13:06There's safety in numbers.
00:13:07There's safety in numbers.
00:13:08You don't know what to do.
00:13:08There's safety in numbers.
00:13:08There's safety in numbers.
00:13:14And from theenct, there's safety in numbers.
00:13:15You're too late.
00:13:17The soil is rat-sized than the land.
00:13:18You're too late to the land.
00:13:20And if we go there.
00:13:22You never plan to be there.
00:15:03How many are there?
00:15:05Some, sir, voices. I'd say about four or five. I can't tell if you're this far.
00:15:09Good.
00:15:17So, Alison.
00:15:18Yes, sir?
00:15:19The guests are here. Will you look after the luggage?
00:15:22Very well, sir.
00:15:22Well, how are you, Leo? Quite a bit, John. And you?
00:15:46Well, never better.
00:15:48Well, Leo.
00:15:49Well, Sylvia, this is a curious place. Yes, strangely enough, it was built by pirates.
00:15:55But you shouldn't have any difficulty in finding your way around, John.
00:16:00Nice to see you again, Sylvia, after all this time.
00:16:07Thanks, Leo. You're looking well.
00:16:10You know, penitentiaries aren't exactly a health resort. I wouldn't recommend them to my friends.
00:16:16There's a fire waiting.
00:16:23Leo.
00:16:26If it's any consolation to you, your water sign predicts satisfaction for you here.
00:16:31What about you, Emily?
00:16:33Me?
00:16:33Don't you know, a seer is never any good for herself?
00:16:44That's a climb.
00:16:46Getting soft, Alec.
00:16:47Oh, not so you do, is it, Leo?
00:16:49Of course, cigars may have cut my wind a bit, but I still smoke them when I want them.
00:16:52Something I was forced to give up, cigars.
00:16:54You got those that I sent you?
00:16:56Yes, I got them. They weren't my fancy.
00:16:58However, my cellmate enjoyed them and survived.
00:17:02Lucky.
00:17:03Hello, Mr. Granger.
00:17:16I'm Jeff Kingsley, son of Jefferson Kingsley, to whom you sent an invitation.
00:17:23Apparently, you didn't know Dad died a month ago.
00:17:26Oh, no, I...
00:17:27I didn't. I'm sorry.
00:17:29You don't mind, of course, my coming out here to see justice done?
00:17:33Of course not. Come in.
00:17:34Do you know all the others?
00:17:43I introduced myself to them on the launch on the way out.
00:17:47Yes, I know everyone, including your stepdaughter.
00:17:51Although I don't know that she remembers me from college.
00:17:53Hello.
00:17:54It's been a long time.
00:18:02Yes.
00:18:03Surprised?
00:18:04Somewhat.
00:18:04Would you like me to explain?
00:18:06I don't think that's necessary.
00:18:08You're not very glad to see me, are you?
00:18:10Should I be?
00:18:11Maybe not.
00:18:12Would it throw you out any if I were to tell you I'm glad to see you?
00:18:20I'm sure you're all wondering why I invited you here.
00:18:24Let's settle that question right now at the beginning.
00:18:27I invited you out here for, let me say, retribution.
00:18:34Now, retribution is not a word.
00:18:36It can mean so many things.
00:18:39It could mean reward.
00:18:41The return of money you think I stole from you.
00:18:43It could mean giving you an opportunity of getting even with me.
00:18:49Or with each other.
00:18:51It could mean revenge.
00:18:53Seeking a life for a life.
00:18:56You see, now you killed something very dear to me.
00:18:59It might have been friendship.
00:19:01It might have been my ideals.
00:19:04It might have been my wife.
00:19:07Perhaps you never knew it, but I happen to love karma.
00:19:10She was more than just a wife to me.
00:19:12She was my ideal.
00:19:14My friend.
00:19:17Whichever one of you killed her will kill again and just as wantonly.
00:19:22So let me warn you, the innocent, mind you,
00:19:25to be wary of the murderer whenever he or she
00:19:29finds it necessary to strike again.
00:19:32And that, my dear friends, concludes the business of the evening.
00:19:37Now let's all be as sociable as we can.
00:19:38Hmm?
00:19:39Oh, I omitted for mention that we have another houseguest.
00:19:45Doc Lake.
00:19:46You all remember Doc Lake?
00:19:47I'm sure.
00:19:48My accountant who was sent up with me.
00:19:50Doc, our friends are having a little drink.
00:19:53Perhaps you'd care to join them.
00:19:54Good evening.
00:19:59If, since Leo puts it so delicately, I'd be delighted to have a drink.
00:20:04And renew old quainty.
00:20:06Oh, by the way,
00:20:08I'm afraid I had to send the launch back to the mainland for some slight repairs.
00:20:13It'll be back in the morning, probably.
00:20:16In the meantime, I'm quite sure you'll find
00:20:18every convenience on this island.
00:20:21Except, of course, the telephone.
00:20:24Dinner will be at 8.30.
00:20:26Many years ago, it was the custom of this household
00:20:55when it was in the hands of pirates
00:20:56to let a man eat his fail,
00:20:59then permit him to know his fate.
00:21:00I'm not so barbaric, of course.
00:21:03I merit following the old custom
00:21:05by giving each one of you a token favor.
00:21:10Or clue, shall we say,
00:21:11to retribution.
00:21:12Or clue, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we, shall we
00:23:14Not with this in my hand, I'm not.
00:23:16I think I retire.
00:23:18I have been used to very early hours these last few years.
00:23:23I think our guests will enjoy a little music if you feel so disposed.
00:23:38Anything special you would like?
00:23:40No, anything you like.
00:23:42Preferably something favoring the woodwinds.
00:23:44Why the woodwinds, Leo?
00:23:46I don't know, Dale.
00:23:47There's something very plaintive about the music of oboes, flutes, clarinets.
00:23:51And something very enticing.
00:23:57Mind if I join you?
00:23:59And if I did?
00:24:00I'd join you anyway.
00:24:02You tried that before.
00:24:03And missed.
00:24:04And this time?
00:24:06I'm your guest, remember?
00:24:07Not mine.
00:24:08Leo Grager's.
00:24:09Leo Grager's.
00:24:10Would you mind telling me what this is all about?
00:24:33What what is all about?
00:24:35This party or whatever it is.
00:24:37Don't you know?
00:24:38No.
00:24:39And why did you come?
00:24:41I had my reasons.
00:24:43I'm sure of that.
00:24:44Good reasons.
00:24:46From your point of view?
00:24:48All of which means you're not going to tell me.
00:24:50That's right.
00:24:51Which also means you don't trust me.
00:24:55Right.
00:24:55I'd favor me, I'll give.
00:25:21Or do you understand yours?
00:25:23Yours, Dr. Lake.
00:25:25I suspect Leo wants to keep track of you.
00:25:28Mine is really quite simple.
00:25:30Leo always said my pencils weren't practical.
00:25:32The eraser, of course, is one of Leo's little innuendos.
00:25:36I have a feeling Leo is not in his right mind.
00:25:39Have you felt that?
00:25:41You understand, I hope, that I've never actually practiced the profession of medicine.
00:25:46Nevertheless, that doesn't prevent you from hazarding a personal opinion.
00:25:50Not necessarily.
00:25:51But as a student of the occult, perhaps you could hazard an opinion.
00:25:58A sign, Pisces.
00:25:59Of course you know what his sign is the case.
00:26:01Two fishes swimming in opposite direction and with Jupiter in the ascendant.
00:26:05I should not like to predict what would happen.
00:26:07His health, never too sturdy, hasn't been aided by prolonged inactivity.
00:26:14I shouldn't like to hazard an opinion either.
00:26:18Do you know, Doctor, I think you and I have something in common.
00:26:21Oh, what's that, may I ask?
00:26:23We've both been in Leo's confidence.
00:26:27I, from an astral point of view, have been in his spiritual confidence.
00:26:30And you, from a business point of view, have been in his financial confidence.
00:26:35Oh.
00:26:36So, possibly by pooling our information,
00:26:40we might work more or less together to our mutual advantage.
00:26:45I'm a review to deserve that.
00:26:46What's the matter?
00:27:16In there.
00:27:20John, do you know any way we can get off this island?
00:27:22There isn't any way.
00:27:23I asked the butler.
00:27:24Why?
00:27:25I'm afraid.
00:27:27Of what?
00:27:28I don't know.
00:27:30But this to Leo always suggests a death.
00:27:33What to Leo might this suggest?
00:27:35What is it?
00:27:36Multiplication tables.
00:27:37Two times two and so on.
00:27:39It might be one of Leo's subtle warnings,
00:27:41insinuating you not to attempt any more juggling infigures to your own satisfaction.
00:27:45But I've got a feeling it goes deeper than that.
00:27:48Tables, skulls.
00:27:53Where'd Alec get?
00:27:55Oh, I didn't see.
00:27:57He stepped it in his pocket too fast.
00:27:59Alec knows something.
00:28:00I wonder what that key is to.
00:28:07What key?
00:28:09One Gale got.
00:28:11Why don't you find out?
00:28:12I will when I get a chance.
00:28:14Watch out for young Kingsley.
00:28:15I don't trust him.
00:28:16Suppose you watch out for young Kingsley.
00:28:18I will.
00:28:19I didn't know you played so well.
00:28:24Didn't you?
00:28:30No.
00:28:31There was a time I thought I knew pretty much about you.
00:28:34Did you?
00:28:36Remember the long walks in the rain?
00:28:38Horseback rides?
00:28:39Tennis?
00:28:41The time you beat me six to three?
00:28:43The funny things you used to like.
00:28:45You're craving for red.
00:28:47Chocolate sundaes.
00:28:48Opal.
00:28:50They weren't your birthstones, were they?
00:28:53No, I thought not.
00:28:54They were always bringing you hard luck.
00:28:56Like the time we were going to the symphony together
00:28:58and you had on your new high-heeled red slippers.
00:29:01Your heel got caught in a grating.
00:29:04You know, it's a shame I couldn't get those nails to stay in.
00:29:07We went down the aisle together.
00:29:10You don't know how much trouble I had getting those tickets
00:29:12right in the third row, just to show you off.
00:29:16Oh, I've still heel, by the way,
00:29:18but I don't suppose you have any use for it, do you?
00:29:21I haven't any use for any heel.
00:29:24No, I thought not.
00:29:26But will you ever forget our picnic down by the roof of the bank?
00:29:29That great field of daisies by us.
00:29:31The weeping willows.
00:29:33Remember how ecstatic you were about the weeping willows?
00:29:36You know, you haven't done what Leo asked you to.
00:29:41You mean the woodwind?
00:29:43Yes, have you forgotten?
00:29:45No.
00:29:55I see.
00:30:01You weren't going to let me in on it, were you?
00:30:04In on what?
00:30:06How about that?
00:30:13No.
00:30:15Why not?
00:30:17Well, you'll find out if you think it's important.
00:30:21Gail, is anything important to you?
00:30:26Yes, solitude.
00:30:27Here we go.
00:30:57Here we go.
00:31:04Here is for the looking to the future.
00:31:07What do you say?
00:31:09You want me to cast horoscopes?
00:31:10Oh, no, nothing so individual.
00:31:12I mean something you would let us all in, like, uh, you know, a seance.
00:31:17Oh, a seance.
00:31:19Well, if you're all in accord, why don't you gather round the desk?
00:31:22Good.
00:31:27We're ready for you, Emily.
00:31:57Of course, Emily, you'll want the lights out.
00:32:05It was better.
00:32:06Of course.
00:32:07I'll tell you that.
00:32:27I'll tell you that.
00:32:55I see you with a burden on yourself, a heavy burden, so heavy it may submerge you.
00:33:15I don't know why it is, but I feel as if water was coming up over me.
00:33:22I feel the sensation of drowning.
00:33:26Stop it.
00:33:27Stop it.
00:33:28I don't want to hear anymore.
00:33:29Very well, then.
00:33:42It's strange, but I can't seem to reach you.
00:33:46You seem to bar the way.
00:33:53Bars are in the way.
00:33:56They will skip me for the moment.
00:33:59And for yourself, what do you see?
00:34:01Myself?
00:34:03It's very difficult to see for myself.
00:34:06But I feel about to be elevated.
00:34:10Stop it!
00:34:12Stop it!
00:34:13Stop it!
00:34:14Somebody turn on the lights!
00:34:16I will.
00:34:18Need trick to that.
00:34:28Mind telling me how you did it?
00:34:29It was no trick.
00:34:30No trick.
00:35:00Way to get away!
00:35:01Where are you going?
00:35:02I have an idea.
00:35:03What about?
00:35:04Gail's Key.
00:35:05Oh.
00:35:07What?
00:35:08You won't call her.
00:35:09Her.
00:35:10I am.
00:35:11Yes.
00:35:12I am.
00:35:13I am.
00:35:14I am.
00:35:15You won't call her.
00:35:16The...
00:35:17I am.
00:35:18The...
00:35:19The...
00:35:20The...
00:35:21The...
00:35:22The...
00:35:23The...
00:35:24The...
00:35:25The...
00:35:26The...
00:35:27The...
00:35:28The...
00:35:29Seance over already, Emily?
00:35:38Yes, Alec. I'm rather tired tonight.
00:35:40Why don't you turn in?
00:35:41I think I will.
00:35:43I wonder if you'd get me a book, Alec.
00:35:47I'm tired, but not sleeping.
00:35:50I thought perhaps you might pick out something from Leo's shelf over there.
00:35:55Don't you think you'd better select your own reading material, Emily?
00:35:57Emily, you have such a good mind.
00:36:00Oh, cut, cut.
00:36:08Would you be looking for any book in particular, Alec?
00:36:11For Emily?
00:36:14Something light, of course.
00:36:19Oh, yeah.
00:36:20How about this?
00:36:22What is it?
00:36:23Crime and Purnishment.
00:36:27Ideal.
00:36:36Thank you, Alec.
00:36:37Say, it's getting late.
00:36:38Time we were all turning in.
00:36:40How about it, John?
00:36:41Ready to call in the night?
00:36:42We are.
00:36:43I might as well.
00:36:46Ready, Emily?
00:36:59I might as well.
00:37:06Bye.
00:37:08What are you doing out here?
00:37:21I might ask you the same question.
00:37:24Catch cold in this fog.
00:37:26The air's warm.
00:37:28Mind telling me what you're running away from?
00:37:31Am I running away?
00:37:32Of course.
00:37:34First from all your friends,
00:37:35by coming after this desolate spot to live.
00:37:37Well, now from everyone inside.
00:37:40What right have you to pry into my private affairs?
00:37:44Maybe I like you.
00:37:45You have a very peculiar way of showing it.
00:37:48I'm a very peculiar person.
00:37:50Yes.
00:37:51Maybe I like you more than you realize.
00:37:54Really?
00:37:55I realize you're just a little girl in a lot of trouble.
00:37:58What trouble?
00:37:59That I mean to find out.
00:38:02Is that all you mean, find out?
00:38:04No, but I do for a starter.
00:38:06And after that?
00:38:09Gail, have I ever done anything to make you mistrust me?
00:38:13You came out here with the others, didn't you?
00:38:15Obviously.
00:38:16Why?
00:38:17To see you.
00:38:19I don't believe you.
00:38:21Gail, why don't you break down and be yourself?
00:38:25Why don't you let me help you?
00:38:27There's only one way you can help me, and that is to leave me alone.
00:38:31Now look here, young lady.
00:38:33Don't drive my patience too far.
00:38:35You might as well know once and for all, I have no intention of leaving you alone.
00:38:38Very well, then.
00:38:40I'll leave you alone.
00:38:41I'll leave you alone.
00:39:11Oh, I came in to borrow some cleansing cream.
00:39:18Why, of course.
00:39:19I'm not robbing you, am I?
00:39:26No, I seldom use it.
00:39:28Oh, but you should, and I'd leave my dear.
00:39:30Too much bother.
00:39:31Nothing should be too much bother to protect your skin.
00:39:35In this climate, one doesn't need to take the trouble.
00:39:38If you don't take the trouble to preserve your skin now while it's healthy, you'll regret it.
00:39:42I'll chance that.
00:39:44Already it shows the signs of neglect.
00:39:48What?
00:39:52What an interesting room.
00:39:53His mother didn't decorate it.
00:39:55These things were here when Leo bought the train.
00:39:57Leo bought it?
00:39:58I thought Toma bought it for him.
00:40:00Leo bought it in car.
00:40:01I thought Toma bought it.
00:40:17Yes, sir.
00:40:19I thought Toma bought it.
00:40:20I thought Toma bought it.
00:40:21What?
00:40:21What?
00:40:22Al Utley?
00:40:29Yes, sir.
00:40:31Just tidying up a bit, sir.
00:40:33As a butler?
00:40:34Or as an escaped lifer, Al Jenks?
00:40:37That's a lie.
00:40:38What, that you're an escaped lifer?
00:40:40I acted a bit foamy as a butler when Granger wasn't around.
00:40:44I made some pretty wise contacts in the big house.
00:40:48Contacts that could find out a lot of things.
00:40:51I wrote a few letters.
00:40:52I've some answers.
00:40:54Came over with the mail for the guests tonight.
00:40:57Like this one.
00:40:59Hello, Dots Cook.
00:41:01The eel you described with the scar across his left palm.
00:41:09Certainly Al Jenks, the lifer who crashed out of here about a month ago.
00:41:13I thought you ought to know because...
00:41:22Enjoying yourself, Doc?
00:41:35Yes.
00:41:37I was just looking for you, Leo.
00:41:41Indeed.
00:41:43The asks seem a bit ill at ease.
00:41:46That's a pity.
00:41:46I've given them the run of the house.
00:41:48What more could they have me do?
00:41:49Give them enough rope.
00:41:51Eh, Leo?
00:41:51Something like that.
00:41:52They're all wondering what you've got up your sleeve.
00:41:56Including you, Doc.
00:41:58Have you forgotten, Leo?
00:42:00I know what you've got in mind for them.
00:42:03Have you forgotten that time in stir when I showed you how they framed the two of us and you blew your top?
00:42:09That day when you learned your wife had been murdered.
00:42:13The day you really went stir crazy.
00:42:17Have you forgotten what you said to me that day?
00:42:20Under the circumstances, no one could hold me accountable for what I said.
00:42:24Couldn't they?
00:42:26And especially if what you said came to pass.
00:42:29What'd I say, Doc?
00:42:31Plenty.
00:42:32And if it took your last dollar.
00:42:35That's just exactly what it did.
00:42:38What, take your last dollar?
00:42:39Oh, that's a good one.
00:42:41That's a fact.
00:42:43However, if you prefer to believe them too, that I have a fortune buried here, I can't prevent you.
00:42:50But you said you were looking for me.
00:42:51What for?
00:42:52I thought you might like to know what your guests are doing.
00:42:55I know pretty well what they're doing.
00:43:01After all, there was nothing I could ever tell Karma that was encouraging.
00:43:04All I saw for her was trouble and worry and her tragic end.
00:43:09You saw that?
00:43:11Oh, yes.
00:43:11Quite clearly.
00:43:13And in detail.
00:43:14I saw her choking her into insensibility.
00:43:17That's a lie.
00:43:18It is?
00:43:20How do you know?
00:43:21She wasn't choked to death.
00:43:22She was stabbed with an eye.
00:43:24Perhaps you know for certain that she wasn't first strangled into unconsciousness.
00:43:28You're making the whole thing up to give the impression you're clairvoyant.
00:43:31Unless you had something to do with her murder.
00:43:33I had less to do with her murder than you had.
00:43:36Why, you fraud.
00:43:37If you dare to...
00:43:37Come in.
00:43:43Perhaps you ladies don't realize it, but your voice is capping when you get excited.
00:43:47Thank you for stopping us, Alex.
00:43:48And you're keeping this young lady from her rest.
00:43:50You're very considerate, Mr. Richfield.
00:43:55I really would like to go to bed.
00:43:57Of course.
00:43:57I merely thought I might...
00:43:58Come along, Alex.
00:43:59It was your idea to leave Dale alone.
00:44:01Come along.
00:44:31I ain't care.
00:45:32Uh, my pipe cleaners, I thought, before I left them here.
00:45:34I didn't know you smoked a pipe.
00:45:37Oh, didn't you?
00:45:38I've always been very interested in pipes. Do you mind if I have a look at yours?
00:45:42Certainly.
00:45:42I must have left you to be in my room.
00:45:47Powerfully.
00:45:49Have a cigar.
00:45:51Thanks.
00:46:01Light?
00:46:03Thanks.
00:46:03You're not smoking?
00:46:14Not at the moment.
00:46:15Uh-huh.
00:46:18Very good cigar.
00:46:19As you should know, Alec, I've always thought of my comforts, even managed to get a few where you sent me.
00:46:26Hmm, you're forgetting that having arranged for your defense, we got you up with five years instead of twenty-five.
00:46:32Five years was long enough for you to accomplish your purpose, Alec.
00:46:35Five years, the receiver for Granger Incorporated gave you ample time to liquidate my enterprises for your own advantage.
00:46:43By the time you got through milking your enterprises, there was nothing left to liquidate.
00:46:49So you came over here to the island to see what you could get out of karma.
00:46:53I'd rise to be careful of your accusations, Leo.
00:46:55We are not fooling anybody now, Alec.
00:46:57There's no jury here, no judge, nor will there be any witnesses.
00:47:00Does that constitute a threat?
00:47:01Take it for what it's worth, Alec.
00:47:03I might have let you off had you been content merely with getting me out of the way for a while,
00:47:08but that you put karma out of the way permanently for that, Alec...
00:47:11No way, Leo.
00:47:12You can't escape, Alec.
00:47:13Oh, can't I?
00:47:16It was you who murdered karma.
00:47:19I thought so.
00:47:21I suspected you all along, but I wanted proof.
00:47:25I've got that proof now, Alec.
00:47:27Obviously, that was the way you struck her down.
00:47:30A sudden fuss in the dark without warning, without giving her the slightest opportunity of defending herself.
00:47:36You very stupidly used the same technique, the same knife, no doubt.
00:47:40You see now, Alec, that you're not as clever as you thought you were.
00:47:46You see now, don't you, that you played right into my hands.
00:47:50You see now, Alec, you convicted yourself, Alec.
00:47:53You've sealed your own doom.
00:47:59You've signed your own death.
00:48:01You see now, Alec.
00:48:02I hope you
01:02:31God bless you.
01:02:33God bless you.
01:02:45Don't you.
01:02:57Poor mother.
01:02:58She knew.
01:03:00You mean she knew what you put yourself through needlessly, Gail?
01:03:04Needlessly?
01:03:05Yes.
01:03:06Don't think I haven't seen through you.
01:03:07Don't think I don't know why you ran away from us all.
01:03:10It was your wounded ego.
01:03:12Ego?
01:03:14But, Jeff, every place I went, people looked at me, accusing me.
01:03:17I knew what they were thinking.
01:03:19They were thinking she's Leo Granger's stepdaughter,
01:03:21and she'll come in for her share of his loot, too.
01:03:24I knew what you were thinking, Gail, but you were wrong.
01:03:26You were dead wrong.
01:03:30I'll bet you even thought that was the way I felt about you.
01:03:33Of course.
01:03:34And you thought I came out here with those cheap chislers to grab off a hunk of loot.
01:03:39Oh, I didn't know what to think, Jeff.
01:03:40I didn't want to, but how could I think otherwise?
01:03:42You came over with them.
01:03:43I was going away from us.
01:04:04Are you kidding me?
01:04:06We need to give a woman a break.
01:04:07If it wasn't for you, it wouldn't be in there.
01:04:09Well, Mr. Bronson, it was all right.
01:04:10We shall test that one with a convict, you know.
01:04:17John, help me. I can't swim.
01:04:20What's that?
01:04:35It's the launch coming back.
01:04:37Your launch?
01:04:38I recognize the motor.
01:04:40How long will it take you to pack?
01:04:42For what?
01:04:43Well, you're carrying out your mother's wishes, aren't you?
01:04:46Remember, she said leave the island at once, and that's now.
01:04:49Now? But, Jeff...
01:04:51Don't, are you? I'm taking you away from this place at once.
01:04:54Even if I have to kidnap you.
01:04:56You won't have to kidnap me, Jeff.
01:04:58Well, then, hurry.
01:05:19Yes, it's going to be!
01:05:21Alex!
01:05:26Alex!
01:05:28Oh, my God!
01:05:29Alex!
01:05:30Alex!
01:05:31What are you doing?
01:05:32Alex!
01:05:33Ah!
01:05:34Ah!
01:05:35Alex!
01:05:36Ah!
01:05:37Alex!
01:05:38Ah!
01:05:40Oh, my God.
01:06:10Oh, my God.
01:06:40Oh, my God.
01:07:10Oh, my God.
01:07:40Oh, my God.
01:07:48You ready?
01:07:49Yes, Jeff, I'm ready.
01:07:50Let's get going.
01:07:52Oh, but I'll have to find Leo and tell him I'm going.
01:07:54He isn't in his room.
01:07:56I found Leo.
01:07:57He has no objection if you're going.
01:08:01Oh, but don't you think we ought to find out if any of the others want to come with us?
01:08:04I found that out, too.
01:08:05They're not coming with us.
01:08:07Not this trip.
01:08:08I'll send the launch back to them later.
01:08:10There's sun on the mainland, Gail.
01:08:15Sun.
01:08:17That's what you need, Gail, sun.
01:08:19More than anything else.
01:08:21Unless it's me.
01:08:21I'll settle for both, Jeff.
