00:00Welcome to the stage 3 of La Vuelta. Come with me.
00:05After Jonas Wingegaard powered to victory yesterday, it's on to a punchy third stage,
00:10the last full outing on Italian soil. With only 135k to cover, there's every chance
00:15the down will still be in red at the end of the day.
00:18Do you guys also want a breakaway to succeed and let someone else in the red jersey?
00:25We don't mind that, but I think there will be teams, most likely Trek, with Matt Pedersen,
00:33that like to control to have a sprint of strong riders at the end.
00:38The little Trek's ability to control the stage may well depend on the number of riders who
00:42are keen to get into the breakaway. On such a short day, anything's possible.
00:48I think it'll be full gas until the finish. It's a bit of an in-between stage. It could
00:52be a breakaway, it could be a reduced sprint, but I think a lot of guys will be looking
00:56for the breakaway and we will for sure, so hopefully it'll be a breakaway, but I think
01:01it'll be a long fight today. I wouldn't be surprised if the jumping went all the way
01:05until the first climb of the day, so we just have to be ready for anything.
01:10Matt Pedersen may be the favourite on paper, but the stage 1 winner Jasper Philipsen still
01:15believes in his chances.
01:16Is there any way to have a bunch sprint today?
01:19Yeah, a bunch sprint will be very difficult, but maybe a sprint with a reduced group and
01:26the goal is to try to go for the stage, but it's a really hard stage and the legs need
01:30to be good, so we see where we will be, but it's going to be a hard finish.
01:37Well, stage 3 starts in San Maurizio Canavesi and halfway through the day there's a category
01:462 climb which could make life hard for the pure sprinters. As for the finish, it's an uphill
01:50drag of 2.6km at 3.6% to the line in Ceres.
01:56The horn is tooted, the flag is waved, stage 3 of La Vuelta is officially underway.
02:08There was a fast start to the day's action with plenty of attacks, but in the end only
02:12four riders went up the road. Sean Quinn in the pink of EF Education Easypost, Luca Van
02:18Boven in the red, white and yellow of Anta Marche Wanty, Patrick Gamper in the purple of
02:24Jayco Alula and Alessandro Vere of Arkea B&B Hotels wearing the Pocadoc jersey on behalf
02:30of Jonas Vingegaard. The Italian eyeing up the five points at the summit of Isiglio which
02:36would potentially provide a springboard for attacks further back. For now though, as expected,
02:41Lidl Trek had taken control of the peloton for Pedersen, keeping the break within two minutes.
02:47The riders absolutely powering through the early part of the stage at more than 50km an hour.
02:54But at that speed it wasn't long before they reached the climb of Isiglio. With the peloton
03:01easing off a bit, the breakaway riders began the climb with almost two and a half minutes
03:05in hand. However, four soon became three as Gamper was dropped. And Van Boven wouldn't
03:13last much longer.
03:15Vere and Quinn heading to the summit together, while Lidl Trek were still setting the pace
03:21for Pedersen, looking to drop some of their sprint rivals. Vere closing on his objective
03:27of the day.
03:28The question is going to be, who's going to take the points? Vere is in a good position,
03:34he's in prime position, he crests the top of Isiglio, the second categorised climb. He
03:39takes the five points, he's worked hard for that.
03:42Well, a group of riders were indeed dropped on the climb, including Philipsen, but they
03:48still had plenty of time to catch up again. However, that meant the Belgian wouldn't be
03:52going for points at the intermediate sprint at the bottom of the descents. Quinn and Vere rolling
03:57through first, which left a couple of bonus seconds available for the peloton. Pedersen
04:02making his move for Lidl Trek, with Vingegaard just keeping a close eye on Ciccone. In the
04:07end, 15 points and two seconds for Pedersen, just points for Vingegaard and Ciccone.
04:14Well, Vere soon realised the writing was on the wall, then he sat up with 38k to go, leaving
04:21Quinn solo up at the front. The former American champion was eventually caught inside the final
04:2620km, with the peloton still clipping along at 45km an hour. The road soon began to rise
04:33again as they approached the finish in Ceres.
04:43The pace remaining high on the run-in and it was too hot for Philipsen to handle. The green
04:48jersey dropped, with 8.5k to go. Lidl Trek had been doing the lion's share of the work,
04:55but Visma Lisabike also popped up with a few kilometres remaining. When they hit the final
05:01climb itself, Victor Campenart put in a huge turn on behalf of the race leader, Vingegaard.
05:08Some crazy hairpin turns, positioning here was absolutely key. Ciccone leading out for Pedersen,
05:14with a few hundred metres to go.
05:17Look at this from Max Pedersen. He's in the commanding position. He's going to take this
05:22final sweeping right-hand corner in pole position. He's being challenged by David Goddou. David
05:26Goddou gets the better of him. He's got the acceleration. David Goddou is going to come
05:31through and David Goddou, the Frenchman, is the stage winner in Ceres.
05:36What a sensational effort from David Goddou to secure his biggest win in years, his first
05:43at World Tour level since 2022. The Frenchman's been through some tough times, but this was
05:49a timely reminder of his abilities. It's a third Vuelta stage win after his double in 2020.
05:55The season's been so difficult and I haven't won at World Tour level since I think the
06:09Criterium du Dauphiné when I beat Juan Van Aert and now I can add beating Mads in a sprint
06:15to my CV. It's just a detail, but yeah, I have to say there's a lot of emotion right now.
06:20Third yesterday, first today. Goddou is a man on form, taking his 13th career win ahead
06:28of Pedersen, Lidltrek's second for the second day running.
06:32While Vingegaard was third on the day, that was enough to keep hold of the red jersey.
06:37He and Goddou are level on time with Ciccone at eight seconds.
06:43Vingegaard also goes top of the points classification, having taken 35 on the day. Ciccone is up to
06:49second and he'll be wearing the green jersey tomorrow.
06:53Thanks to his efforts in the breakaway today, Vare recovers the polka dot jersey from Vingegaard.
07:00And there's no change in the youth classification. Juan Ayuso is still in white, leading six other
07:05riders on the same time. Tomorrow's fourth stage takes us from Italy to France with several
07:10early climbs before a downhill sweep into Varon. Join us for that on Tuesday and thanks
07:15for watching.
