00:00Taiwan's top cabinet officials faced questions from lawmakers on Monday about ongoing tariff
00:05negotiations with the United States, and reiterated some of the government's key goals in the
00:10talks.
00:11First among them is to lower the tariff rate below its current 20 percent, second, to fold
00:15the as-yet unannounced semiconductor tariffs, known as Section 232, into any overall deal,
00:21and third, to avoid having new tariff rates stack on top of old ones, pushing that effective
00:26rate even higher.
00:28Vice Premier Zheng Lijun, who is leading the negotiation team, said that the talks are
00:32active, with the team having had a call with their U.S. counterparts as recently as last
00:37Friday.
00:38Opposition lawmakers have criticized the process as opaque, and they're raising concerns about
00:42Taiwan's tariff rate being higher than neighboring countries.
00:45And the other states, that the agreement has failed to lose the answer.
