Alexandra Eala battled from 5-1 down in the deciding set to beat Denmark's 14th seed Clara Tauson 6-3 2-6 7-6(11) in their US Open first round encounter on Sunday (August 24), becoming the first woman from the Philippines to record a singles win at a Grand Slam in the Open era.

World number one Aryna Sabalenka began her title defence in style with a 7-5 6-1 win over Switzerland's Rebeka Masarova.
