00:00All right, men, step out here.
00:06You gotta walk for your rest.
00:10Yeah, so it's for murder charges?
00:17This is 60-year-old Aileen Gowan.
00:21She is briefly seen here, leaving this apartment complex with a briefcase.
00:25This is the last time she would ever be seen alive.
00:43Aileen's body would be found 13 days after the last time she was seen on CCTV.
00:50Police believe she was entangled in a deadly love triangle prior to her murder.
00:54But over the course of the next several months, this cold case would turn out to be far more complicated
01:01and even more disturbing than they could have ever imagined.
01:05When we and her broke up, she moved in with a guy and we tried to mess with her.
01:10And all I know is his first name's Sam.
01:12They said we told her it was a bad deal with him.
01:15Because he's telling me if the cops get behind him, he's going to run to a tree.
01:19They're turning left down on three.
01:21Central 166, be advised, it's their grandfather in the car and he called the state
01:26that he's possibly going to try to crash the car.
01:29On February 13th, 2023, Elaine Gowan was seen leaving her longtime job at Sugar's Diner.
01:42She had just told her daughter over a text message that she was on her way to pick up some things
01:47from her friend Mike, who she had recently moved in with after breaking up with her ex-boyfriend, Sam Brammer,
01:54only a week earlier.
01:56Strangely, she would specify that her co-worker at Sugar's Diner would be the one to drive her there.
02:03However, as Elaine left her workplace, no co-worker would show up.
02:09Instead, strangely, her ex-boyfriend Sam would be the one to pick her up.
02:15Hours would go by, but Elaine would never show back up to Sugar's.
02:20The owner of the restaurant, Megan, would begin worrying as to where Elaine could have gone
02:25and started frantically sending her messages asking for her whereabouts.
02:30But oddly, she would receive a single message back saying,
02:36Leave me alone, I'm done.
02:38This was very strange coming from Elaine, as she almost never texted, usually resorting
02:46to phone calls, and was often extremely responsible.
02:49Something strange was going on.
02:52The day would go by, and Elaine would never be seen.
02:56The following day, Elaine's daughter would file a missing persons report for Elaine
03:01to the Council of Bluffs Police Department, and an investigation began.
03:06Detectives would begin collecting CCTV footage from everywhere in the town
03:10to try and fully document where Elaine went the day of her disappearance.
03:14But this would be quite the lengthy process.
03:17So without anything to go by, police would start asking her family and friends.
03:22Apparently, after leaving her ex-boyfriend, Sam Brammer, a week earlier,
03:28she had stayed with her new friend, Mike Brockman,
03:31a man her family claimed had likely assaulted her the night before she disappeared.
03:38This shined a suspicious light on both of the men she was involved with.
03:43So police would bring in both Sam and Mike for interrogation and see if they could find any leads.
03:49Mike was a friend of Elaine's who met her at Sugar's and became very close over time.
03:54It was still unclear to officers what happened to Elaine.
03:58At this point, for all they know, she could have just gone MIA and taken a break from her stressful life.
04:04However, if anyone would have the clues as to where she went, it would be Mike.
04:10So, basically, um, I mean, as you know, I talked to you on Monday.
04:16Monday, or Wednesday, I guess, was the first day I had talked to you.
04:21I had received information from some of the family that you and Eileen were possibly in a relationship
04:27or kind of swore she may have lived with you for a few days or a week or so.
04:33But if you could just kind of go before Monday, just kind of tell us how you guys know each other,
04:38how she ended up out there at your place, that kind of thing, and then we'll kind of move from there.
04:43She was a wager of sugars, and I knew her from in there, and I'd talk to her before, and stuff like that.
04:50And then she told me, I don't know what it was like, on Tuesday or Wednesday night,
04:57that she got kicked out and she needed a place to stay.
05:01I said, well, you can stay at my place for a couple days.
05:05I think it was Friday.
05:06She called me, and she said, I won't be coming back.
05:10She says, we're getting back together, her and her boyfriend.
05:14And all I know is his first name's Sam.
05:17I don't know anything else about you.
05:19Okay.
05:19Two initial thoughts can be made upon hearing Mike's story.
05:46On one hand, it seems like Sam was back together with Aline,
05:50so Sam would be a much stronger person of interest, as he'd likely been the last person to see her.
05:56On the other hand, Mike may have had a deep connection with Aline,
06:00meaning if he learned she got back with her ex-boyfriend just days after moving in with him,
06:05he could have played a sinister role in her disappearance.
06:09But detectives plan to let Mike tell his side of the story before confronting him about the suspicious relationship.
06:14So I took her to work Monday morning, a week ago yesterday.
06:20Dropped her off at 5 a.m., and she was supposed to get off at, I don't know, she said 7 or 8.
06:27Her daughter was going to pick her up.
06:29She was going to go to her mom's and get her safe and take her to her daughter's.
06:35And then she was supposed to come back to work at 2 o'clock in the afternoon.
06:39Well, then I get a phone call from the bar saying, hey, have you seen her?
06:45And I said, I haven't seen her. I haven't talked to her in nothing.
06:49Well, she didn't show up for work. She didn't show up.
06:53I said, I haven't heard anything.
06:55And I tried to contact her and couldn't get a hold of her.
06:59So I sent her a text message, and I said, all your stuff that's bagged up is going to be sitting behind the bar.
07:06You've got to get it. I want it out of here.
07:08I don't want to mess with any more of this.
07:12And I never, since 5 o'clock that Monday morning, I'd never had any contact with her phone, text, or anything.
07:21And then, I didn't know anything until right before you called me that she'd come up missing.
07:29Okay.
07:30Mike would go on to claim that he never had any sexual relationship with Eileen,
07:34and that she stayed in a completely different room to him while living in his house.
07:38However, detectives know more about Mike than he thinks,
07:41and with some information Eileen's close friends shared with them,
07:45they don't believe he and Eileen were just friends.
07:49Did you, has anybody said anything to you that Eileen was saying anything about you?
07:56Have you heard anything about her making any statements about you
08:00and your behavior while she lived, or was staying with you out there?
08:07No.
08:08Did you, you haven't heard that she may have made a statement
08:11that you possibly assaulted her while she was out there?
08:15No.
08:16Okay.
08:17That statement was made to a couple people
08:22that you supposedly laid down in, on her bed with her
08:30and spooned her from behind?
08:35Is that, can you tell me, is that any of that accurate?
08:39Any of those statements?
08:40I would not do that, because like I said, she was a loose cannon.
08:46I mean, I guess here's the deal.
08:49You're a grown man, she's a grown woman.
08:51You know, if there was any type of whatever
08:53contact between you that was consensual,
08:56there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
08:57I mean, she was crying that first night she'd come out and I hugged her.
09:02Okay, but there was no special relationship, no asking for it or anything.
09:12This information is, well, concerning,
09:17considering it would be unlikely to make up blatant lies of this magnitude.
09:21However, with little to no evidence, other than a few rumors coming from her friends,
09:26police can't harp over these allegations and decide to wrap Mike's questioning up.
09:30At this point, Mike is still considered to have potential involvement in Alene's disappearance.
09:36But with a lack of leads, they direct their attention to the only other potential suspect,
09:41Alene's ex-boyfriend, Sam Brammer.
09:44I've already met Detective Dyer.
09:46Yeah, I mean, you hit first things.
09:49Yeah, this is Detective Dyer.
09:51I'm the sergeant.
09:52He talked to him on the phone.
09:53My name's Ted Roberts.
09:54I'm a sergeant.
09:54You know, you're not going to phone with you.
09:56Yeah.
09:56He said that I was the last person to see her alive.
09:59I didn't say that.
10:00Yeah.
10:00I didn't say that.
10:01Yes, you did.
10:02Yeah.
10:02Yes, you sure did.
10:03I said you were the last person to saw her before she went missing.
10:07Sam wasted no time adding more suspicion onto his name.
10:11The phone recording shows that the detective never mentioned Sam being the last to see Alene alive.
10:17Alene has been missing for less than 48 hours at this point,
10:20so the fact that he's already alluding to the idea that she's dead is awfully disturbing.
10:25But this would only mark the beginning of Sam's unsettling choice of words during the interview.
10:31I think you misheard me there.
10:42I got to record it off to go back and listen to it.
10:44But, yeah, I'm pretty sure that's not what I said.
10:47But, I mean, basically we got a, you know, a crazy deal here where, you know, Eileen is evidently,
10:55if her family and everything else, she's never done this kind of thing before.
11:00She's never just, you know, took off and gone.
11:03They all know.
11:04What she does is she comes to me, she moves him, she's moved him with me four or five times.
11:09But usually when she moves him with me, she stays away from home.
11:13Yeah, because they said they talk every day.
11:15The daughter and her take every day by the phone or whatever she says.
11:20Yeah, if they need something, then they'll get a hold of her.
11:22Okay.
11:23Just like when she got arrested for DWI, she went to jail, they finally fell her off.
11:27What did they do?
11:28They took her and dropped her off at the bar.
11:30Okay.
11:31Then she was homeless.
11:32Okay.
11:32Let's, if you could, I just need to know what went on Monday morning.
11:39What happened Monday morning with you?
11:43She texted me.
11:44Okay.
11:45And wanted to know if I would come and get her.
11:48Because one of her friends supposedly was supposed to come and get her.
11:52And supposedly ran out of gas.
11:55So.
11:55Did she tell you the friend's name or?
11:57Mm-hmm.
11:57Okay.
11:58So I got there and I said, I'll be there in a minute.
12:01And then she was going to come inside.
12:02I don't want Megan to know that Rebecca or you're with me.
12:05I said, okay.
12:06And I pulled up.
12:08She gets in the truck.
12:11We take off.
12:12Run out to this.
12:14Supposedly the one that tried to do something with her.
12:17Mm-hmm.
12:18And dropped her off there.
12:21Then I left.
12:24And then wasn't too long after that is when she called me.
12:28I think she was at my house knocking.
12:30See, you can't get in my apartment building unless you have a key to get in.
12:33Mm-hmm.
12:33But I think she was knocking on my window.
12:35I didn't look.
12:36I didn't care.
12:37I just wanted to lay down and take a nap.
12:39That's when she texted me.
12:41Wanted to know if I could talk to Emmy about letting her move back in.
12:45Because this guy.
12:48Now that's true.
12:49When?
12:51That night.
12:52The night before Monday?
12:53The night before Monday.
12:54Yeah.
12:54Okay.
12:55And I don't know if that was true or not.
12:56I don't know if she was just saying that to get me to take her back or what.
13:00I don't know.
13:01Okay.
13:01This statement adds more weight to Aline's allegations towards Mike.
13:07If Mike did do these things to Aline, then moving out and staying with Sam would be completely logical.
13:13On top of his statement, what Sam is about to reveal to detectives will make the allegations much harder to dismiss
13:20and place all the suspicion back on Mike.
13:24And she says, uh, please talk to Emmy.
13:25See if I can come back home.
13:27He told me last night.
13:28Sam, I love you.
13:29I promise.
13:30I'll quit drinking.
13:31Please give me another chance.
13:34Then she says, I'm hanging out with her.
13:35And this was it.
13:37At 122.
13:38What does it say?
13:40And it says here, I'm hanging out with a friend.
13:41I will get ahold of you later.
13:43I'm not going to work.
13:46I'm not going back to work.
13:47Back at two, right?
13:49I think two or three.
13:51I can't remember.
13:52Okay.
13:52And then, uh, you go to work, go back there.
13:57They treat me like shit.
13:59And then she says, you've seen it.
14:02They have.
14:03I mean, but I can't say nothing.
14:05And then, uh, I said, why are you telling me?
14:08Why didn't you tell me this earlier when I was talking to you?
14:11You're drunk.
14:13You're drunk.
14:14And you, to be honest, that's why I can't do this no more.
14:17Based on these texts, it really seems like Aline's disappearance was just a way for her to take a break from her traumatic life.
14:35If the allegations are true and her ex-boyfriend refused to give her a place to stay, well, then running away for the time being is completely reasonable.
14:45Sam's story seems solid so far, but there's one tiny detail that just doesn't quite add up.
14:53And this detective has just picked up on it.
14:56But you said you dropped her out from front of Mike's house.
14:59Yeah.
14:59And you watched her walk into the...
15:01All she did was she got out and she walked in front of the truck.
15:05If she walked in front of the truck, I would have turned and that's when I left.
15:07Okay, so you didn't see her get into the house, anything like that?
15:10Mm-hmm.
15:12So if she had walked away from there...
15:15I mean, that's quite a ways away from your apartment complex.
15:18I wonder how she would have gotten to you.
15:20Unfortunately, some friend was supposed to come and pick her up.
15:24Sam claims the day of Aline's disappearance.
15:28He drove her from her workplace at Sugar's Diner over to Mike's house to get her belongings.
15:33After that, he drove off, assuming she was to be picked up by one of her friends.
15:38Fortunately, police can easily cross-reference these claims using surveillance footage.
15:43At this point, the majority of the CCTV camera footage has been obtained from the day of Aline's disappearance,
15:48so detectives quickly wrapped up Sam's interview so that they could further investigate his claims.
15:53Additionally, the detective would apologize for assuming Sam's earlier word choice was suspicious.
15:59After nearly 48 hours of compiling the surveillance footage from around the town,
16:04officers managed to put together a complete timeline of Sam and Aline's car ride.
16:09At 8.30am on February 13th, Aline would patiently wait at her work, Sugar's, for Sam to pick her up.
16:19Aline needed a ride to go and purchase a new apartment, since Mike had kicked her out.
16:23She would tell her boss and daughter that a friend was picking her up
16:26because she didn't want anyone to know her and Sam were back together.
16:29Aline and Sam would first drive to her mother's apartment, Dudley Courts.
16:34She would be seen carrying a suitcase-like object out from her mother's apartment, then leaving with it.
16:39This would turn out to be a safe containing $1,200,
16:43which she had planned to use as a down payment for an apartment.
16:47At 9.30am, they would drive directly to the Sherwood apartment complex to purchase the apartment.
16:52However, the complex happened to be closed, so they were unable to purchase anything.
16:57This is where the timeline starts to deter from Sam's claims in the interrogation room.
17:03From 9.45am to 10.30am, Sam's car can be seen driving all across town.
17:08He went in multiple circles and even made a quick stop to Burger King at 10.30am.
17:12However, he never drove Aline to Mike's house like he had claimed.
17:17In fact, Sam's car can be seen driving in the opposite direction to Mike's house the entire morning.
17:23This is concerning, but it would only get worse.
17:29For the next two hours, Sam's truck goes off the grid.
17:33It's completely unknown where he went, and no CCTV cameras had managed to capture his location.
17:39Luckily, at 1pm, his truck would appear back on the same streets he circled on for hours that morning,
17:45And eventually, he would make his way back to his own home at the Cottonwood apartment complex.
17:51But things were different in all the recordings past 1pm.
17:57Aline was no longer with Sam.
18:00Cameras had clearly captured that Sam was nowhere near Mike's house the entire day.
18:05So why would he feel the need to lie about where he dropped Aline off?
18:09This footage paints Sam out to look awfully suspicious.
18:14And while both Sam and Mike have some strong dirt to their name,
18:18Sam's clear lies convince officers to bring him back to the station the very next day.
18:23This time, to confront him on his false alibis.
18:27Unbeknownst to detectives, this very interview would spark a months-long game of cat and mouse
18:33involving a high-speed pursuit, unsettling clues, and a chilling discovery.
18:38But before we get to that, let me tell you about today's sponsor, ShipStation.

19:44With that said, let's get back to Sam Brammer,
19:46who had just been brought back to the interrogation room
19:49to explain the inconsistencies in his alibi.
19:52The other day when we were in here, you told me that you got a phone call from her
19:58and you went to pick her up from her.
20:00Right.
20:01So if you could do me a favor and just kind of go through that timeline again.
20:05We know that it was somewhere right around 8.30.
20:07So if you can just kind of go through that timeline again as far as...
20:10I'm not too sure on the time.
20:12Okay.
20:13But anyway, she texted me that morning and I didn't text her back.
20:18I called her and she wanted to know if I would come and get her
20:21because some girl was supposed to pick her up and she ran out of gas.
20:26So I went and picked her up and she got in the truck.
20:30I left and she wanted to talk to me about helping her get in the apartment
20:34because she lived in that same apartment building and I did,
20:39but she didn't pay her rent so she got kicked out.
20:42So what she didn't want to go home right away.
20:45So me and her just went right down Broadway
20:47and then she wanted to stop her at her mom's house.
20:49I stopped at her mom's house and she was in there for, I don't know,
20:54five or ten minutes.
20:54She came out of there, got back in and was going back down Broadway
20:59just talking some more and she promised me,
21:02she wanted me to drop her back off at his house
21:04but she made me a promise that I wouldn't do nothing to her
21:08and I told her I'd promise.
21:10That's the matter of fact, when I get there, you just get out,
21:13you walk in front of the truck, I'll go turn around and I'll leave.
21:16And she said, okay.
21:17Okay, so you went up there, you dropped her off, then what'd you do?
21:20Yeah, I pulled up and she didn't want to be going in the driveway
21:23in case he was there.
21:24Okay.
21:25And she got out of the truck, when she got out of the truck,
21:27she walked in front of the truck and that's when I watched her
21:29turn around and came back.
21:30Okay, so you went back down to the highway, went back down to Kingsville?
21:35He left her there?
21:37Huh?
21:37You left her there?
21:38Yeah.
21:39Or you...
21:40No, she got out of the truck, she didn't want to come in.
21:42A second ago you said she went in, grabbed clothes,
21:44came back out to your truck and you guys left again.
21:46No, no, no, no, no.
21:48That was at her mom's house.
21:51Clearly, Sam is lying about where he was the day of Aline's disappearance.
21:56The detectives know it, and it seems like Sam is starting to realize
22:01he won't be able to keep up his fake story for much longer.
22:06Even after being told that cameras show him nowhere near Mike's house the entire day,
22:10Sam insists on his story that he did in fact drop Aline off at Mike's house.
22:15With this, the detectives would take a brief break from the room to watch the footage over again,
22:21just to triple check that Sam is 100% lying.
22:24And to nobody's surprise, the footage showed Sam on the opposite side of town
22:30during the time he claims to have been at Mike's.
22:32So when the detectives return to the interview room,
22:35they'll use this information to try and get Sam to own up to his lies.
22:40We got a small little snap that we're right here, we need to talk to you about, okay?
22:45So you said after you dropped her off, out there off of Highway 191 at that residence,
22:51you headed back to your apartment.
22:54We checked some of our cameras, okay?
22:56And we have a camera at 36th and Broadway,
22:58and we have your truck going westbound at 928 a.m. going to Omaha, okay?
23:03You passed 36th and Broadway heading west.
23:05So you didn't go home, you went over to Omaha, it looks like.
23:12Do you remember what you did or what you saw?
23:13I don't remember going to Omaha.
23:15Where'd you go?
23:16I told you I went straight home.
23:18I don't remember going to Omaha.
23:20Well, the camera doesn't lie.
23:23It's your truck and it's your license plate number.
23:25Right.
23:25Sam is stuck at this point.
23:50No matter what information detectives reveal, he will not admit to anything.
23:54At this point in the interview, all Sam has left is to simply reject everything the detectives tell him.
24:01They know Sam isn't telling the truth.
24:03But why he's not telling the truth is what remains to be seen.
24:07However, with Sam seemingly uncooperative,
24:10all detectives can do is end the interview and let Sam back onto the streets.
24:15Until more concrete evidence can prove he had more to do with Aline's disappearance than he claims.
24:19But, fortunately, letting Sam back onto the streets would lead them to the exact evidence that they were looking for.
24:27While law enforcement was working away at this case, another investigative group would be working in the dark.
24:35Aline's family.
24:36Everyone held hope that Aline was still alive.
24:39But with time passing, her family was demanding answers.
24:43Sam and Aline had a long history of arguments, physical assault, and much more that the family was well aware of.
24:50They knew Sam had more information about Aline's whereabouts than he had told them.
24:55So, to figure this out for themselves, Aline's son, Jack, would show up to Sam's door that same night.
25:02And he would pound on the door.
25:03And upon opening, Jack would ask the simple question.
25:07What the hell did you do to my mom?
25:11In Jack's words, Sam stared at him as if he had seen a ghost and then shut the door in his face.
25:17Sam panicked.
25:19Whatever he did to Aline, people were starting to catch on.
25:24Later that night, Sam would talk to his granddaughter, Emily, and would claim that he was going to harm himself so that he could go visit her deceased grandmother.
25:34This shocked Emily, as in her eyes, Aline was still alive.
25:39Quickly, she would call 911 to report everything Sam had just told her.
25:43And shortly thereafter, police would locate a drunken Sam at his local bar.
25:49Hi, sir. How are you?
25:50I'm good.
25:51Is this your vehicle?
25:53Yes.
25:53Hey, can I talk to you real quick?
25:55Yeah.
26:00Do you have any weapons or anything on here?
26:02No.
26:02Hey, um, we were called to check your welfare, okay?
26:08I think you talked to your granddaughter earlier, and she was concerned about you, some of the statements that you made to her.
26:14I'm here for you, man.
26:15Tell me what's going on.
26:17Why are you feeling the way you're feeling?
26:20My girlfriend, it was like a week ago, me and her broke up.
26:26And she moved in with a guy, and apparently, supposedly, he raped her.
26:31What's his name?
26:33Only thing I know, he goes by Mike.
26:35Me and her broke up.
26:36She didn't have a place to go.
26:37She moved in with him.
26:39She told me Friday that he tried to mess with her.
26:42So I called my son to see if he could move back in because he kicked us out.
26:47So I called my son to see if he could move back in with her.
26:50Hi, Ken. Are you clear?
26:51And then I went to his house, got her stuff, took her to my son's.
26:55And then the next morning, we went to work, and then she went right back to him.
26:59So I don't know.
27:01So what comments did you make to your granddaughter that would be concerning this evening?
27:06I just told her I'm going to go out and have a couple drinks, and I love her.
27:09That's it.
27:11And did you mention something about seeing Grandma tonight?
27:14What's that?
27:15Did you mention something about seeing Grandma tonight?
27:17No.
27:18I would like for you to talk to somebody tonight.
27:21I would like for you to talk to a medical professional.
27:23Okay.
27:24I don't want to have to drag you up to the hospital, but I most certainly will.
27:28I think based off of what the granddaughter has told us tonight, and kind of the...
27:32Oh, she call you?
27:33Yeah.
27:34Oh, shit.
27:35No.
27:36Yeah, so...
27:37She was crying when we went and talked to her.
27:39I mean, that's...
27:39Oh, really?
27:41Yes.
27:41She was very emotional.
27:42Her best friend and aunt are currently at the apartment because of what you said.
27:47Wow.
27:48Based off of what they've told me tonight, I'm going to give you one of two options.
27:51You can go up willingly and talk to a medical professional tonight.
27:55Okay.
27:55Or I can take you up there and you'll stay there for 72 hours.
27:59Okay?
27:59I can't have my granddaughter come get me?
28:01No.
28:02Based off of what you've told us and what's going on in your life right now...
28:05Yeah.
28:06...you need to talk to somebody.
28:08I don't think that we will be doing our due diligence to do our job to make sure that
28:13you're not going to hurt yourself based off of what's going on with you and your girlfriend.
28:18Right.
28:19Okay?
28:20I...
28:20You need to talk to somebody tonight.
28:22Okay?
28:23And so the best course of action is to go up to the hospital, your choice, to go to talk
28:28to somebody about it tonight.
28:30Sam's mental state was clearly deteriorating.
28:33Whatever happened to Aline, regardless of his involvement, was really getting to him.
28:38Following this, Sam would be placed in a psychiatric facility for the next two days, where he would
28:43undergo therapy and psychiatric care.
28:46During these two days, detectives would aim to gather more intel on the case, this time
28:54by interviewing the family of Aline and Sam.
28:56They'd bring in both Justin Brammer, Sam's son, and Nicole Shipper, Aline's daughter.
29:03And both of them would reveal significant details, crucial to solving the case.
29:09This is Detective Zach Melner.
29:10I just want to get as much history as you can tell me or talk to me about when it comes
29:17to your mom.
29:18What was their relationship like over there?
29:21Not a healthy one.
29:22Okay.
29:23What do you mean by that?
29:25He didn't like her drinking.
29:27He thought he could change her from...
29:30Well, get her to stop drinking.
29:32I told him that he can't because she won't change for a kid.
29:36She's not going to change for a man.
29:38And he seemed to think that he could change her.
29:42So he kept trying with her.
29:48But there was things on his part and her part that were not healthy.
29:52They both had jealousy issues.
29:54They both had...
29:56He has a very short temper.
30:01Very short temper.
30:02And little as things will set him off.
30:04And it's just...
30:05It's quite ridiculous.
30:07But when they were good, they were good.
30:14But when it was not, it was...
30:16I was constantly in the middle of it because she's my mom and that's my boyfriend's dad.
30:24They were good when they weren't drinking.
30:28Especially when she wasn't drinking.
30:33She...
30:34She'd bicker.
30:36She'd argue.
30:38They'd start arguing.
30:42They'd just escalate.
30:44Next day, they were fine.
30:46They'd go to bed angry.
30:47It seemed like Sam and Aline had a rocky relationship, but it rarely escalated to the point of violence.
31:11And if the fights did turn violent, it was Aline doing the physical harm to Sam.
31:16The week prior to last Monday, what was going on?
31:22They were separated.
31:23She called me before she went missing and telling me how she didn't want to get back with him because she's tired of him throwing her out for little reasons.
31:37And she's sick of not being able to be able to have a stable home because he just gets so mad at the smallest things and just kicks her out.
31:48Did Emily want her to go or was it your dad that wanted him to go?
31:51Was it Sam?
31:52My dad.
31:53Okay.
31:55He'd take her back.
31:56He'd kick her back out.
31:58Bring her back.
31:59Kick her back out.
32:00Told you to stop.
32:01I mean, you guys need to separate.
32:03Mm-hmm.
32:03In separate ways.
32:04Sam's family strongly suggests that Aline was, in fact, the troubled one in the relationship, and Sam tried over and over to cut her out of his life.
32:15This only perplexed detectives and simply doesn't explain why Sam's been acting so strangely following Aline's disappearance.
32:24Two days after these interviews, Sam would be released from the psychiatric facility.
32:28Fortunately for Sam, no new leads had come out regarding Aline's death,
32:32meaning he could finally have some peace for the first time in the last week.
32:36Or so it would seem.
32:39Because on February 21st, the same day Sam was released, he would go to Walmart to restock on alcohol.
32:46However, right as Sam was about to get in his truck and leave, an off-duty officer spotted him and decided to ask some questions related to Aline.
32:54Hesitantly, Sam asked to move his truck, and then he would talk to the officer.
32:59But the moment he got into his car, Sam would slam on the pedal, nearly hitting the officer,
33:04and floor his truck down the road, flying past pedestrians.
33:08The cop would jump in his car and begin chasing Sam,
33:11who would only pick up speed as he ramped up to over 100 miles per hour down the peaceful roads of Rexburg, Idaho.
33:17The chase continued for multiple minutes,
33:36but it became clear to officers that Sam had no plans of slowing down.
33:40So the chief officer radioed in to call the chase off.
33:43Shut it down.
33:47Sam had just successfully run from the police.
33:53And while he was having the time of his life, this chase obviously made things much, much worse for Sam.
34:02Not only was he now highly suspected of murder, but is also wanted for evading arrest and reckless driving.
34:09A couple hours after his escape, he would simply return back to his apartment as if nothing had ever happened.
34:15Ironically, this would actually postpone Sam's arrest,
34:19as more officers assumed he would be hiding in a more clever place,
34:23and searched around the town instead of checking the Cottonwood Apartments.
34:27In fact, the entire day would go by,
34:29and officers had no trace of where Sam could have gone.
34:33But the fun would only last for a day,
34:38and the pressure must have gotten to Sam,
34:40as the next morning, he would turn himself in to police.
34:44Sam would be charged with eluding and reckless driving,
34:47and would be placed in the Potawatomi County Jail.
34:50However, Sam would only spend one night in the county jail after being bailed out by Emily.
34:55So by the grace of a miracle, yet again, Sam Brammer was back on the streets.
35:03During this time, Sam would go to the bank and hand them a large stack of cash to deposit into his account.
35:11This wad of cash would come out to be approximately $1,200,
35:16the exact amount found in a lien safe that she had the day of her disappearance.
35:20Additionally, Sam would drive his truck over to the scrapyard.
35:23He would ask to fully dispose of it, crushing it to pieces, and even shredding it after.
35:28To make sure this got done, Sam would meticulously watch the entire hour-long process,
35:34ensuring his car was turned to dust.
35:38It couldn't be more obvious that Sam had something to do with Aileen's disappearance.
35:44The lies to detectives, the disturbing comments to Emily,
35:48running from the cuffs, cashing in Aileen's safe money,
35:51and now shredding the only potential piece of evidence he had left.
35:56On top of all of that, detectives had looked into the claims involving Mike Brockman
36:00and discovered that Mike was at work all day at Omaha, Nebraska,
36:05nowhere near Sugar's Diner where Aileen was last seen.
36:09All of that leaves Ivan, Sam Bremmer, as the final suspect.
36:14But with no direct evidence, all law enforcement could do is wait until new clues came their way.
36:22911, what's the address of your emergency?
36:30I don't really have an address.
36:32We're off the exit of Crepe, Iowa, over by a public shooting area.
36:37What's going on?
36:39So we're driving down the road to go shooting or whatever,
36:42and there is a dead body on the side of the road.
36:46Male or female?
36:48It's female for sure.
36:49On February 26th, Aileen's body was found underneath a bridge just miles away from Sam's apartment.
36:59The body was unrecognizable, but the clothes matched the exact outfit Aileen was wearing the day she had disappeared.
37:08Someone had killed her.
37:10Medics would pronounce Aileen dead on the scene,
37:14and she would be taken to the hospital to get an autopsy done to determine her cause of death.
37:19But her results would come back strange.
37:24Aileen had eight blunt force impacts to her head and a fractured front tooth.
37:29While gruesome, none of these injuries were sufficient to cause her to die,
37:35so her cause of death would be ruled as undetermined.
37:40Unfortunately for police, this meant they wouldn't be able to immediately charge Sam with murder.
37:46However, with all the sufficient evidence they'd gathered throughout the course of the investigation,
37:51they had enough to charge him with abuse of a corpse.
37:54Quickly, they'd receive an arrest warrant,
37:57and for the fourth time that month, officers would arrive at Sam's apartment,
38:01this time to finally seal his fate.
38:04Hello, good morning.
38:08We're looking for your grandfather.
38:11Is he here?
38:12Okay, just one second.
38:14Just go.
38:16Sam, right?
38:17He goes by Sam.
38:18Okay.
38:19Is there anybody else in there?
38:22No, just him.
38:23He's sleeping.
38:24Okay, has he got any guns or anything like that?
38:28Okay.
38:29Well, he's got a warrant, so we need to talk to him.
38:30Just let that officer in.
38:32I'll be right there.
38:40Ivan!
38:44Step out here.
38:46Show us your hand.
38:47No, no, no.
38:47Hey, hey, hey, hey!
38:49Okay.
38:49All right.
38:50Come here.
38:51You've got a warrant for your arrest.
38:55I'll let you smoke that if you...
38:57Let me put it up here, all right?
38:58No.
38:59Oh, you can smoke it.
39:00All right.
39:00I'll try it.
39:02All right.
39:06Shoot us.
39:07Yeah, we'll get him.
39:08You're not.
39:09Yeah, yeah, yeah.
39:10We'll get him.
39:11What about an oxalot?
39:12Huh?
39:13What about an oxalot?
39:14I'll explain it here in a minute, all right?
39:15Okay, he'll be...
39:25Pock County will be able to call you in a little bit.
39:27Thank you.
39:27Okay.
39:29Sam's games had finally come to an end.
39:32Sam would eventually go to court for the murder of Eileen Gowan.
39:36Forensic pathologists would spend weeks investigating Eileen's death,
39:40and eventually, they would discover zipper marks on the neck of Eileen,
39:44signifying that she was strangled to death, likely by Brammer.
39:49This pile of circumstantial evidence seemed to be enough for the jury,
39:53and on November 17, 2023,
39:56Ivan Samuel Brammer was charged with second-degree murder,
40:00abuse of a corpse, and theft.
40:02He was sentenced to 65 years in prison.
