Can green hydrogen decarbonise the shipping sector?

The maritime industry is very important in the North Sea region, and the sector is a major contributor of CO2 emissions. The cross-border Zero Emissions Ports North Sea project explored solutions to decarbonise shipping.

In partnership with the European Commission

00:00Zero Emissions Ports North Sea, or let's call it Zem Ports in short, is all about helping
00:16ports to make the transition towards clean and green shipping. So it focuses on using
00:23zero emission fuels such as green hydrogen or green electricity. It was a collaboration
00:30between five different partners from Sweden, from Denmark, from the UK and here from the Netherlands.
00:38The emissions by maritime shipping do not stop at the border. It's a problem for the whole North
00:44Sea region. We need a joint strategy, we need joint knowledge, we need joint technology.
00:53The main achievements of the Zem Ports project, first of all, was of course the H2 Barge 1. We now see
01:01the first hydrogen powered vessels, but it was not the only thing that the project achieved. For
01:07example, it's very important to fuel this barge with hydrogen and for that the project also developed
01:14a mobile refuelling station. In Denmark we looked at ferries, ferries that were battery powered,
01:22and we looked at how ports can in a very smart way charge these vessels. All this will contribute
01:30as an inspiration to other ports, how to make this transition to more clean and green shipping.
