Congress MP Shashi Tharoor raised concern over the arrest of former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe. He urged Colombo to 'abjure politics of vengeance' and said the alleged charges appear trivial. Wickremesinghe was hospitalized soon after his arrest, raising concerns about his health.
01:00What he did, he went to Cuba to attend a G-77 summit, then from Havana he went to New York to attend the UN General Assembly, then on the way back to Colombo he stopped by in London.
01:14His wife who is a professor of English, Maitri, she normally comes to Jaipur for the Jaipur Literary Festival and all that. A local university, Wolverhampton University, you know invited both of them because they had a ceremony for Maitri.
01:32So from London they stopped by and they drove 200 kilometers to Wolverhampton and the head of that institution was Swaraj Pal who passed away on Thursday unfortunately.
01:46He invited them. So they went there and the expenses involved in Maitri's travel were taken care of by herself.
01:58But the Sri Lankan government is saying that from London you know the President namely Ranil, his wife and 10 other people went to Wolverhampton.
02:14What that means is that these people were government employees. So you use them for a private trip and they arrested him.
02:26But this is not a corruption at all. You see if the President, I don't know if you remember in 2009 when President Obama wanted to take his wife Michelle to show a play in New York.
02:40So they flew by Air Force One and you know security, the President even if he is a private individual you still have to provide security.
02:49I mean so this is very silly and with the President of Sri Lanka you cannot keep the security back and then drive to Wolverhampton and come back and all that.
