00:00Hello there, welcome to the month of September and welcome to the very first episodes of Putting Dr. G on the Spot in the Blue September.
00:09What does Blue September mean? Actually, it's focused on all the conditions related to prostate cancer.
00:16So, what exactly is the first thing that you worry about in prostate cancer? Hereditary prostate cancer.
00:22So, how do you know whether prostate cancer is actually age-related because of old age that generates some mutation of the genes
00:35or it is something that is hereditary and that needs to be worried about for the next generations?
00:42In fact, the age is what is a telling sign.
00:45If somebody is less than 55 in their age when they presented with prostate cancer,
00:52the subsequent generation will likely to be affected by prostate cancer which is hereditary in nature.
00:59In fact, hereditary ones are only between 10 to 15%.
01:03So, who are at risk?
01:06I mentioned age. If the individuals that actually has got young age that presented with prostate cancer,
01:12then the family history is there.
01:15Other thing is BRCA genes.
01:17There's BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes which is well known to Angelina Jolie
01:21for somebody who has got breast cancer.
01:24However, BRCA genes is also affecting generations of men who are presented with aggressive prostate cancer.
01:32Other form of prostate cancer or other form of hereditary prostate cancer
01:37also is related to other type of cancer such as ovarian cancer in the family,
01:44breast cancer in the family, pancreatic cancer in the family and breast cancer
01:48because all these are hormone-dependent cancers.
01:52So, once you know you're at risk, what are the way forward?
01:56In fact, there are certain groups of individuals may need genetic testing.
02:01So, those who have got strong family history, BRCA genes and also young age within the family
02:08who has got this condition.
02:09And how to prevent it for the future from getting this?
02:12In fact, there are two ways.
02:14One is the actual lifestyle.
02:17Certain lifestyle, for example, less smoking and also more active exercise will help you.
02:25Other thing is actually less stress because we know stress will induce cancer,
02:30especially prostate cancer.
02:32Obesity is another thing.
02:34Men who are more obese are more likely to get prostate cancer.
02:38And diet.
02:39Diet is incredibly important.
02:41We know that processed food and high-fat diet is very bad for you.
02:47And foods such as strong in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflowers,
02:53lycopene, they are well known to protect the prostate.
02:57And omega-3, which is a good fat, is also very good.
03:02For the following week, we're going to focus on prostate cancer and fertility.
