00:00As the smoke settles, a new face emerges from the haze.
00:12This 14 year old from the town of Harvey is putting her foot down to pursue a passion
00:17for motorsports.
00:18You have to put your foot full on the brake and put it into first gear and then you start
00:23accelerating full throttle and you let your brake off and then you do like a big tip in
00:27with the steering wheel.
00:28A passion supported by her parents with a birthday wish, arriving in the shape of a
00:33V6 ute, modified to burn rubber.
00:38So it was probably one of the best birthdays I've ever had.
00:41Judged on the performance of controlled manoeuvres, burnout competitors are awarded for smoke volume
00:47and driving skill.
00:49No problem for this driver.
00:51When I took her out the first time it wasn't like one of these kids that you have turn around
00:54and say no no you need to push the accelerator harder, she pretty much bashed it on the limiter
00:58straight away.
00:59The teenager has to have a special licence and an adult by her side, along with a helmet
01:06and a fireproof suit.
01:08There's barricading in place next to the pad, alongside the pad to prevent spectators from
01:15getting injured and to prevent cars going where they shouldn't off the pad.
01:19Female competitors in burnout competitions have historically been rare, but drivers like
01:24Riella are proof that starting to change one smoky skip at a time.
01:29There's been women that have been there since day one and then there's women that are slowly
01:33getting the confidence to join in and have a bit more fun.
01:36Fun and serious competition in the burnout arena.
01:40All girls can do anything, just try.
01:42If you don't like it, you don't like it.
01:43If you like it, may as well get into it.
01:45A burning desire satisfied.
