00:00Comin' up on Paramedics Emergency Response.
00:04What happened?
00:05I guess you didn't see me, so she had me.
00:07Oh, I didn't know what happened.
00:09I have a pee test, I want everything done.
00:12You want a pee test?
00:13Not many people ask for a pee test right off the bat.
00:16Things are a little mixed up for you, eh?
00:18I thought I was dreaming of it.
00:20Any time you have a patient who has a risk of a spinal injury,
00:23you need to make sure you're minimizing any movement the patient might have.
00:26One, two, three.
00:30Oh, boy.
00:32Don't say, oh, boy.
00:37Well, he was coming in spicy.
00:39Oh, yeah, you said I'm good.
00:41Yeah, you were.
00:42Oh, boy.
00:43I'm killseed anyway.
00:44But you still scared me.
00:46Phase 223, you're responding Delta.
00:49For a 25-year-old male who says you have five vehicles.
00:52I know.
00:53It's definitely quicker to go down college.
00:55I know.
00:56So a call comes in for a 25-year-old male patient struck by a car.
00:59My first thoughts are how fast was the vehicle going, and was there any major trauma sustained?
01:04Conscious breathing.
01:05Well, that's good.
01:06So my major concerns would be head trauma, chest trauma, some kind of spinal injury.
01:11Well, I mean, this is a serious call.
01:14Yep.
01:15I'm thinking how fast was the car going, and how far was he thrown?
01:19You want to be in this lane, I think?
01:21Yeah.
01:22So we pull up on scene.
01:23I see a vehicle stopped in the intersection.
01:25I see the patient lying in the grass with the firefighters and the paramedic supervisor assessing him.
01:29Did he get thrown?
01:30I don't know what's going on.
01:31Are they working on him?
01:35As I approach the patient, I can see he's bleeding from a laceration on his forehead, but he's conscious and talking, which is a good sign.
01:41This is Taylor.
01:42He's 21.
01:43He got struck by that vehicle there at about 30 kilometres an hour.
01:46Okay.
01:47So were you thrown?
01:48Uh, yeah.
01:49Yeah.
01:50Yeah.
01:51Does it think he lost consciousness, no medical concerns, no allergies, through spawning normally?
01:59Have you had any alcohol or any drugs tonight?
02:00Uh, no.
02:01Dane, you saw the windshield too, hey?
02:03There's significant damage to the hood here.
02:05Hey.
02:06They had to have hit him at a pretty good rate.
02:08There's damage to the hood.
02:09This patient was likely struck on his leg, bounced off, rolled, and hit the windshield.
02:13What happened?
02:14Uh, I was walking across the street.
02:16Okay.
02:17The light changed.
02:18Yeah.
02:19I ran and thought I'd make it, but I guess she didn't see me, so she hit me.
02:21Okay.
02:22Do you have any numbness or tingling anywhere, Taylor?
02:23No.
02:24Oh, this one too?
02:25Yeah, we'll take everything off.
02:26Okay.
02:27Were you with him, or were you in the car?
02:28I was the driver.
02:29You were the driver of the car.
02:30And how are you doing?
02:31Not what I expected when I came over.
02:34Okay.
02:35In a situation like this, we're also very worried about the driver of the vehicle.
02:39No.
02:40This is so unexpected.
02:42I really didn't mean for it to happen.
02:44He came out of nowhere.
02:46This driver is very cooperative with her story, which is going to help us guide our care for
02:51this young man.
02:52The light was green, so that's why I wasn't expecting anyone to be there.
02:56Did you have pain in your back at all?
02:58Uh, no.
02:59No.
03:00How fast do you think you were going?
03:01Well, something was like, I want to see 30, but I don't even think I was going that fast,
03:04because the light was just red and just changed the view.
03:06On the count of three, we're going to roll you.
03:08I'm going to log roll this guy on his side.
03:10On three.
03:11One, two, three.
03:12Assess his back and palpate his spine.
03:14Take a peek.
03:15And did he try to get up?
03:17No.
03:18At all?
03:19All right, man, I'm going to feel your top here.
03:20Okay, any pain up here?
03:21No.
03:22Looks good.
03:23Any pain down the spine at all?
03:24No.
03:25And when you got out of the car, was he talking to you?
03:27Yeah, he was talking to you.
03:28Okay.
03:29One, two, three.
03:31It looks like it's just a little bit of a cut.
03:33There we go.
03:34I don't even know if they'll put stitches in or not.
03:36This guy's injuries are minor, luckily, and it could have been a lot worse.
03:40We're going to take you to the hospital, and we're just going to do it once over, okay?
03:43So on a night like this, where it's really dark out.
03:46We're going to lift you on this thing and put you on the bed, okay?
03:48He was wearing dark clothing.
03:50He came running out in front of her.
03:52Luckily, she had just started to accelerate because the light had just turned to green.
03:55Ready?
03:56One, two, three.
03:57Landed here from there.
03:58Oh, I see.
03:59Okay.
04:00He's got a dent there, Dan.
04:01It could have been much worse for this young man.
04:02He could have been thrown into oncoming traffic.
04:04He could have landed on the pavement.
04:06He could have struck the street pole.
04:07He could have ended up underneath that vehicle or through the windshield.
04:11It's a tender left knee and some abrasions.
04:13So at the end of the day, he's a very lucky young man.
04:20So what is the chief complaint?
04:34Chief complaint is unusual behavior.
04:36That's kind of the theme of the night.
04:38We'll stage for code 8.
04:39Just let us know when they've arrived on scene.
04:40It's indicating that he's not intox.
04:41So the call comes in and we get unusual behavior.
04:45Automatically, I start thinking that someone doesn't normally call an ambulance for unusual
04:51behavior unless it's extreme unusual behavior.
04:53It seems to me like that's what an intoxicated person would do.
04:54Yes.
04:55So we start thinking about psych issues and drugs.
04:56I think we're on the right track here.
04:57We pull up on scene.
04:58Police are already there.
04:59I can see there's someone in the back of the police car.
05:00I can also see a vehicle that has debris scattered all around it and there's a police officer waiting
05:03to talk to us.
05:04to talk to us.
05:05Hi.
05:07How are you?
05:08Si, sembrava che un'intoxicata da un person.
05:11Sì.
05:31Ciao.
05:32Come sono?
05:33Noi.
05:34So, uh...
05:36He doesn't live here.
05:37He's completely torn apart the inside of his car here.
05:41Oh.
05:42Uh, there's a bunch of aching drug baggins on the ground.
05:45Oh.
05:46Okay.
05:47And I think he's already injected a little bit of blood still in it,
05:50so he's injected with something.
05:52The officer tells us that he has found evidence of drugs,
05:54as well as a needle,
05:55indicating that the patient has possibly just recently injected.
05:59And that is his vehicle, so he must...
06:01No, this is his boss's vehicle.
06:02Oh.
06:03And he says his boss gave it to him so he could go to the hospital.
06:05Oh.
06:06But we don't know about it.
06:07Seems sketchy.
06:08Does the boss live here?
06:09No, we have no idea who lives here.
06:14He says he hasn't taken anything,
06:16and then he did say he took some, like, sleeping medication.
06:19Is he physically injured at all, do you think?
06:21No.
06:22When the door opens on the police car,
06:24the patient's already in mint sentence.
06:26This has never happened.
06:28Bye.
06:29I can tell right now that this is going to be an unusual call.
06:32Maybe we'll check you out in the ambulance.
06:34Sure.
06:35My name is Corey.
06:36I'm one of the paramedics,
06:37and my partner is Brooke.
06:38She's right behind you there.
06:39I have a pee test.
06:40I want everything done.
06:41You want a pee test?
06:42Hmm.
06:43Not many people that I encounter
06:44ask for a pee test right off the bat.
06:47Have a seat.
06:48Just on the blue bench there.
06:50It doesn't really tell me much other than that this
06:52is a little bit unusual.
06:53What medication do you take?
06:54For years.
06:55There's no reason why I'm locked out of the bed.
06:57So what medication do you take?
06:59I take a whole lot of medication.
07:02He's telling us he's been on mental health medication
07:04for at least 10 years.
07:06I also take some other stuff that causes doubt,
07:10drugs, and I've been on it for 10 years.
07:13So it's not that.
07:15OK.
07:16So now I'm thinking maybe there's some component
07:18of mental health problems tonight.
07:21People were following this in cars and stuff like that.
07:25I'm not saying he's making things up,
07:28but I'm starting to wonder how reliable is this story.
07:33Because the girl said, pull the car over.
07:36I thought there was stuff in the car.
07:39The girl's not here, though.
07:41Dealing with people that have mental health and addiction
07:43issues is a big part of our job.
07:46Things are a little mixed up for you, eh?
07:48And this guy is obviously struggling.
07:51I took the car apart.
07:52I don't know what the hell I was doing.
07:54OK.
07:55I thought I was dreaming.
07:56OK.
07:57Sure.
07:58So we're going to take him to the hospital.
07:59He'll sober up there and hopefully get the help
08:02that he needs for his mental health issues.
08:04I'm more used to smoking him.
08:05I just hold that guy's car apart.
08:06How am I going to explain that to him?
08:08Just kind of hope that his boss is an understanding guy.
08:11of the road at 8th and Victoria.
08:12Hypothermia protocol.
08:13You know what?
08:14You got it?
08:15Call for a man down at an intersection.
08:16It could be traffic-related.
08:17It could be substance abuse-related.
08:18Or it could be an assault.
08:19Woo-hoo!
08:20Boys!
08:21As we pull up on scene, I see the man sitting on the sidewalk,
08:22talking to the bystanders.
08:23hello.
08:25Hello.
08:26Hello.
08:27Hello.
08:28I see the man sitting on the sidewalk, talking to the bystanders.
08:32For a man down at an intersection
08:34Could be traffic related, could be substance abuse related
08:37or it could be an assault
08:39Woohoo!
08:40Boys!
08:41As we pull up on scene
08:43I see the man sitting on the sidewalk
08:45talking to the bystanders
08:52Hello
08:55Hello sir
08:56How you doing man?
08:57What's your name?
08:58Gary
08:59Gary?
09:00I'm Caleb
09:01My partner's name is Dane
09:02Hi there
09:03Hi
09:04I'm drunk and fell down
09:07Okay
09:08It's okay
09:09Did you hurt yourself?
09:10No
09:11No?
09:12You feel okay?
09:13The patient says he's drunk and fell down
09:15which is not an uncommon call for us
09:17It's okay
09:18Why are you so upset?
09:19It's okay
09:20You're alright
09:21He says he's been drinking a bit
09:25The patient's very emotional
09:27you know he's been drinking quite a bit
09:29but he's just overwhelmed that these people, bystanders, stopped to help him out
09:34All these good children show up to help him
09:37I love it
09:38So good on these ladies to actually stop and see how this man was doing
09:42Driving by, three of us
09:44Yeah
09:45And we see this man laying on the street
09:47Oh that's...
09:48He went around this way and we came back
09:50Well I'm glad you stopped for him
09:52Yeah
09:53He wasn't moving
09:54He wasn't moving
09:55Typically people will just make the call and take off
09:58You're alright
09:59Just gonna make sure you didn't hit your head even though you say you didn't, okay?
10:02I'm good
10:03Any neck pain?
10:04None
10:05Nothing?
10:06The patient doesn't appear to be injured but I still need to do a trauma assessment
10:09One, two, three
10:11There you go
10:12We're up
10:13Good
10:14How do you feel standing?
10:15You're okay?
10:16I gotta tell you guys
10:17Yep
10:18I've been drinking most of the day
10:19That's okay
10:20I'm a face
10:21Okay
10:22Watch the football game, got disappointed
10:24Oh
10:25It put you over the edge, that rider game
10:27A big blowout lost by the riders today
10:29And it's clearly affecting the citizens
10:31How many beers do you think you had?
10:33Oh, 87
10:34That's an expensive tab
10:36You had a lot though?
10:37A bunch
10:38Okay
10:39This guy was awesome
10:40He was super friendly
10:41It just sounds like he had a few too many
10:42I knew that I was not all that stable
10:46And down I went
10:47There you go
10:48I mean, the guy's out having a good time
10:50Having some beers
10:51Hoping for a big victory with the riders
10:53And disappointment
10:55I mean, everyone's upset about it
10:57So in the end, our patient just needs a safe ride home
10:59Thank you guys
11:00Hey, take care
11:01I appreciate it
11:02I guess the lesson here is
11:04No matter how bad the riders do
11:06It's best not to overindulge
11:12As a paramedic, I think you have a unique perspective into the city and people's lives
11:25Most paramedics in a 12 hour shift will see things that the average person will never ever see in their life
11:32We're asked to attend when people are being born
11:36I don't want you to push, I want you to breathe
11:38We're asked to attend when people are dying
11:412354, we'll call it
11:43A paramedic can see that multiple times in a day
11:45I'm not calling the police here
11:47We're having a situation
11:48All you can really do when you're faced with the poverty and how they're living
11:52Is to treat them with as much compassion and respect as you possibly can
11:55Base to 67, you're responding out Highway 7 for a single vehicle rollover
12:10City police are on scene
12:12They have requested we turn our sirens down as they're doing a canine track
12:16And they would like to minimize noise as much as possible
12:19City police have asked us to turn our sirens off because they're trying to do a canine track
12:23This could mean that the crash is a result of a police pursuit and they're still looking for the suspect
12:3010-4 thank you
12:32Turn off phone
12:33Yeah
12:34A lot of emergency vehicles here
12:36Oh boy
12:37We arrive on scene
12:38There are several emergency vehicles already there
12:40Let's check this out
12:42The first thing I like to do when I get on scene when there's already an ambulance there
12:49Is talk to the lead paramedic and get his perspective on the scene
12:53They both crawled out of the vehicle
12:55Okay
12:56And is there supposed to be one more?
12:59It's like just marks there, no I think it's just two
13:01Oh
13:02At this point we know this vehicle was involved in a police pursuit
13:05There are two patients on scene and possibly more that have fled
13:08We've got, there's two patients so we need a no neck and our stretcher because there's two of them
13:12And they're also doing a canine track right now
13:14So
13:151967 to base, we'll be transporting one
13:171934 we'll be transporting one as well
13:19Everybody ready?
13:21We don't know the extent of our patients injuries
13:23But we have to err on the side of caution due to the high rate of speed of the vehicle
13:27And the rest of his head to toes are remarkable?
13:29Yeah
13:30Okay
13:31Any time you have a patient who has the risk of a spinal injury
13:33You need to make sure you're minimizing any movement the patient might have
13:36If we move him too much
13:38Everybody ready?
13:39There's potential for worse injury
13:41One, two, three
13:52I'm just going to look at the passenger compartment
13:54As I walk around this vehicle I'm looking for intrusion into the passenger compartment
13:59That could suggest potential for serious injury
14:02Were you the driver?
14:03No
14:04No?
14:05He was more rattled from the experience than his actual physical injuries
14:10You guys just trying to get away from the cops or what?
14:12I don't know, we were taking a ride from the rideshare
14:16And the guy, when the cops were behind us, he said that he couldn't stop because he had stuck on him
14:21Rideshare? So you didn't know the driver?
14:24No
14:25Jesus
14:27Like the story, the fine details don't really matter right now
14:31We're going to go to you
14:32I'm going to treat this patient's injuries
14:40It's just literally, it's not busy right now
14:43I don't know what to tell you
14:45Brooke was actually my student a few years ago
14:47And when she was done her program in class, she worked with me in the field
14:51Do you know that they changed the definition of literally to mean both literally and figuratively?
14:55Because people were using literally wrong so often
14:57As a student, Brooke never hesitated to get involved
15:00I could always count on her to be there
15:02People are idiots so they change the definition of words
15:05That's the world we're living in nowadays
15:06I can see how much her confidence in her abilities has grown
15:09I literally never said it
15:11You literally said it
15:12No I didn't
15:13And she's a great medic
15:1420 year old female, not conscious
15:21Breathing, passed out
15:24Uh, she
15:27Breathing completely NL
15:29This doesn't give us much to go on yet
15:31And it can be any number of things
15:33Where are my safety glasses?
15:35There's a pair up there aren't you?
15:37There's no pair
15:38How do these look?
15:40Like you're the smartest paramedic in the world
15:42Clear to the right
15:44She could be sleeping
15:46She could be intoxicated or on drugs
15:48Or she could be having some different medical crisis
15:50We don't really know what we're walking into
15:52So, it'll be on your side
15:55We pull up on scene, it's a parking lot
15:57Scene light
15:58We see some firefighters that are huddled around our patient
16:01Who's lying on the ground
16:03Hey guys
16:05How are you?
16:06Good
16:07Yeah, she was just found here by the staff of the restaurant
16:09Oh, I see
16:10Before we can determine how this patient got here and why
16:13She's opening her eyes
16:14Open your eyes
16:15We need to do a physical assessment on this patient
16:17And get some history from her
16:19We're trying to figure out why you're laying in a parking lot
16:24Try to turn it down for you
16:25That's not me
16:26That's me
16:27What? I turned it down
16:28I know, she's mad at me
16:30Oh boy
16:31She likes him, maybe we'll just
16:33Alright
16:34I'm not gonna take it personally that my interaction with the patient
16:36Isn't going as well as I would like
16:38Let him take this one
16:39Okay
16:40But I am gonna step back and let someone else try
16:42I...whoop, look at this
16:44She's getting a little bit more rowdy
16:46Now her concern is that she could injure herself or others
16:50Families
16:51People
16:53Oh
16:54Jesus
16:55No
16:56No
16:57Can I take a look at your face, dear?
16:59Excuse me
17:00Is it okay if we just make sure that everything's... you're not hurt anywhere too badly?
17:06No
17:07No
17:08Okay, code 8?
17:09Yeah
17:10The patient is uncooperative and becoming aggressive
17:13No
17:14No
17:15987 to base, we'll need code 8, please
17:17Public intox, patient's quite violent and aggressive
17:20Now city police need to be involved
17:22No
17:23Yeah
17:24What does that mean?
17:25If we go now, we can go to St. Paul's, okay?
17:29I can kill us, man
17:31Sit
17:32I stand for my family, man
17:35Freeze
17:36We just gotta be careful with this busy street here
17:38My concern right now is that she might stumble out onto the street and get hit by a car
17:47Why don't you try to act like an adult, okay?
17:50She's been swinging at people and running around
17:54Are you eating?
17:55No, no, calm down, it's okay
17:56No
17:57No
17:58She needs a safe place to sleep tonight
17:59Ideally, that would be the hospital
18:01Kill that
18:03But she's not cooperative with us, so she'll be spending the night in cells
18:11This is Taylor, he's 21, he got struck by that vehicle there, about 30 kilometres an hour
18:16Okay
18:17Regarding the call earlier in the night, where the patient was struck by a vehicle
18:21Taylor, what happened?
18:22I was walking across the street, the light changed, so I ran and thought I'd make it, but I guess you didn't see this
18:28He was in the hospital for only four hours
18:31He ended up with a head injury, a small scar, and a sprained leg
18:34The patient feels he got off very lucky, as his injuries could have been much worse
18:40Regarding the patient from earlier tonight, who was on meth and ripped his boss's car apart
18:45I have a pee test, I want everything done
18:47You want a pee test?
18:48He was transported to hospital, assessed by the doctors, and released
18:52What happened?
18:54About 150k in this vehicle
18:56On the highway NBC
18:58One, two, three
19:00Ugh
19:01We transported our patient to the hospital
19:03He was assessed on the trauma side of the emergency room, and was found to have no significant injuries
19:09Watch the football game, got disappointed
19:12Oh, stop that
19:13Sounds like the patient's team's big loss today, pushed him over the edge
19:17How many beers do you think he had?
19:18Oh, eight to seven
19:20He said he had a double knee replacement, and that could have contributed to his fall
19:24He's grateful to everyone who helped him out that night, and he hasn't fallen down since
