Concerns of low outreach to Aboriginal voters in this weekend’s Northern Territory election

With less than one day to go before the local elections in the Northern Territory, there's concern not enough is being done to encourage Aboriginal people to head to the polls. In Central Australia, some of the lowest voter turnouts in the democratic world are recorded.

00:06I think we can make things better, so hopefully that does happen.

00:11I guess I've paid attention this time, I've never paid attention in the past.

00:14Mayoral candidates and council hopefuls are vying for a spot, but not everyone's engaged.

00:20Nothing's ever done round here. That's why some people don't vote.

00:27I told my family that I want to vote. I don't know why.

00:31And I'm the only one I have to vote for.

00:35Desert Communities in Central Australia records some of the lowest voter turnout rates in the country.

00:41Experts say not enough is being done to engage Aboriginal voters.

00:46While there's been a surge in Indigenous enrolment rates in the Northern Territory,

00:52there hasn't actually in fact been adequate outreach and education programs followed through with since the 2023 voice referendum.

01:02The law academic says there needs to be more accessible polling booths in remote areas.

01:07Without addressing the barrier to proper enfranchisement and inclusion of Indigenous potential voters,

01:14it creates further marginalisation of those voters.

01:18A call for greater engagement and a louder voice from remote Australia.

01:23The same kind of people at home are public,

01:25is generally maintained by the end of the world.

01:27While we have the lowest people who live here,

01:28the 50-60s in the world are not only people who live here,

01:30there are no refugees who are missing people who live here.

01:32The rule is not only women who live here,

01:33but with a rather rather than because those people who live here are not only people,

01:35we are not only people who live here in the world of Israel.

01:36All the people that live here and do that.

01:37The opportunity that they live here,

01:38they live here today to be an unfair event.
