Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim on the so called bomb squad, transfers and Fulham
Carrington, Manchester, UK
Transcript
00:00Hi, Ruben. How's the squad looking for Sunday? Is there anybody unavailable back? Is Inanna ready to start?
00:07Inanna is ready to play like last week, so we'll see in the game who is going to be the goalkeeper.
00:16Lich is out, Nuz is out, the rest of the guys are fit and ready to play.
00:21Obviously Sunday is an important match, but there seems to be a lot going on with the deadline going closer.
00:28There seems to be a lot to sort out in terms of outgoings. Is there any movement on that side?
00:32Any hope of bringing anything in?
00:34No, you'll have to talk with Jason. We have a department that is responsible for that part.
00:39I'm just focused on the performance on Sunday and try to win the game.
00:44How often do they update you?
00:47We talk every day, so it's not a meeting, a formal meeting every day,
00:53but we are talking about all the situations and we are trying to see every situation.
01:03We know the players that may leave, or at least we think we do,
01:11but does that mean that you think that there may be more people coming in?
01:19No, it's not an idea that these guys are going to leave, to play in the different club,
01:29and then we are going to receive another player.
01:32We don't know what is going to happen, but we are not waiting to take out someone to bring another player.
01:44One thing is not responsible for the other.
01:46Does that not make it a bit difficult to plan?
01:49You might do, but you might not.
01:52No, because I think the players that you are talking about are the players that are not with the group in this moment,
01:59so we have a group training, so it's not going to affect a lot.
02:04Ruben, just on one of those players in terms of Rasmus,
02:07I just wanted to ask how the conversations have been with him in terms of his involvement,
02:12whether he was on the bench a few weeks ago and then not involved last week.
02:16Just how has he taken the news and how has your interactions with him been?
02:19Like a professional player, so we need to see.
02:22Let's wait until the market is closed and then everything is going to be more clear.
02:28Can I just ask you about two players who were involved last week in terms of Luke Shaw and Mason Mount?
02:31Two players who were injured quite a lot last season.
02:34How good has it been to have a full pre-season behind them,
02:37and especially in the World Cup year for their own ambitions,
02:40them being back fit and available?
02:41More important is for them to help Manchester United to reach our goals.
02:47And then they are really, really very, very good players.
02:51They are experienced, they play a lot of matches.
02:54Mason Mount won the Champions League.
02:57Luke Shaw, I think I already said that when he's fit,
03:00he's really a special player and you can see it every time he plays.
03:05So it's really important for us to have these two guys available for more games.
03:13Ruben, what are your thoughts on Fulham?
03:15Obviously, they're a squad that have had a player turnover this summer as well.
03:19What are your thoughts going into this game?
03:20I think Fulham is always hard to play against Fulham.
03:24They have a clear identity.
03:27Marco Silva is really experienced, is really smart.
03:29He can change several things, cover several spaces,
03:33and you can see game by game he try to do that.
03:36They are really comfortable because they have the experience,
03:40they understand the league is long,
03:43so they will feel confident and relaxed for the game.
03:47So it's going to be a tough match.
03:50But if you look at the schedule, I look at the schedule,
03:53and every game is really hard to play.
03:57So it's going to be a tough match.
03:58And in terms of what you saw last week from your own team,
04:01did that give you confidence?
04:02Areas that you want to focus on as well, perhaps?
04:05Going forward, what do you see?
04:07Both.
04:07Both things.
04:08I think we did well, we played well,
04:11but there is a lot of things that we need to improve.
04:14We need to understand that every game has its history.
04:16The space is not going to be the same.
04:19The opponent is not going to be the same.
04:21Even the responsibility on the game could be a little bit different in that.
04:26It has a lot of influence in the game.
04:29So we need just to be consistent in our performance.
04:33And consistency is not just playing in the same way.
04:36It's like to maintain the level and not drop too much.
04:41And I feel that preseason is preseason,
04:43but even in preseason and Arsenal,
04:45our consistency was good.
04:51Obviously played on the front foot against Arsenal on Sunday
04:54and got a lot of applauded for that.
04:55When you're playing teams that maybe want to sit back a little bit deeper,
04:59I don't know how Fulham are going to play,
05:01but do you think that your team has taken a step forward in that regard
05:03about how to break down those teams that might just want to let you play
05:06and break them down?
05:08We are better.
05:09I think also because we have different characteristics,
05:12we can change that during the game.
05:14We have more options.
05:15So you see that we play a little bit in a different style with Cunha,
05:19for example,
05:20and then in the end with Cesco because he's a different player
05:23and we can use that.
05:25I think we are improving in that department also.
05:29We are creating more chances.
05:31So we are ready for any type of game.
05:33I think the biggest improvement that we had,
05:36we didn't lose the ball so many times in build-up.
05:40That was really good also for our team.
05:43So we'll try to be consistent.
05:44So trying to maintain the level and try to improve a little bit.
05:50Obviously you say we'll see who starts at the weekend in goal,
05:53but regardless of who plays in net,
05:54do you feel you need to change how you defend set pieces
05:57to counteract what happened last week
06:00because teams might target you with those in-swinging corners
06:02for the goalkeeper?
06:03We need to try to...
06:06We need to analyse the opponent.
06:08We try to put the best set up to protect the goal in set pieces.
06:12And we do it all the time, the best we can.
06:16We are not going to change that because of the last goal.
06:20What I think we need to improve is to do the same thing to the opponent
06:25to try to take advantage of that.
06:31Is there any movement on a new contract for him at all?
06:35It's been quite quiet.
06:36No, that part is with Jason.
06:40So it's our play.
06:41He has a contract.
06:44I didn't hear any news about that.
06:48And with him and his development, how's that going?
06:51Because I know you spoke quite highly of him on the tour,
06:53but he's obviously not started as many games under you
06:56where he's had some injury issues.
06:56Yeah, we have some issues, but we play with two midfielders
07:01and sometimes it's a different way of playing.
07:02So we are trying...
07:04And we have to understand, and they have to understand,
07:06especially the young players,
07:08that there are phases in the season.
07:13So nowadays it's normal with a lot of games.
07:17Things are going to change.
07:19But he's there, he's fighting, he's training.
07:21So he's one more option for us to win games.
07:26It's a few weeks now since you said those five players
07:30weren't going to go on the pre-season tour of the United States.
07:33Only Marcus has left.
07:35Is it frustrating that you've still got the other four?
07:38Is there anything that they could have done as players
07:40to help sort the situation out for them?
07:43Oh, I think it's...
07:44Again, I know that it's not a good thing
07:48to have players in this situation,
07:51but it's clearly that they want to play
07:53in the different club, and that is clear.
07:57So we try to arrange everything for both parts to be happy.
08:03So I have to try to imagine, to have the training
08:06with the guys that I think are going to be the future.
08:09And then the other guys are training
08:11and preparing for the next chapter.
08:13When the window is closed, it's a different history.
08:16When the window is closed, we have to receive the players
08:18and then new life and anything can happen.
