00:00On Oct. 28, 2015, police responded to a 911 call.
00:05The caller claimed that they had just walked by their neighbor's home
00:08and they saw their neighbor's body lying on his porch.
00:11It appeared that the victim, 38-year-old Jonathan Sherrill,
00:14had been shot and killed by a shotgun at close range.
00:17The police found a used shotgun shell nearby on the victim's lawn,
00:20but that was all the evidence they were able to find
00:22until they spoke with his neighbors.
00:24One neighbor told the police that they had seen Jonathan
00:27and an unknown female outside.
00:28The female was attempting to kiss Jonathan,
00:31but he denied her advances and told her to leave.
00:34Another neighbor had cameras outside of their home
00:36that showed a vehicle pulling into Jonathan's driveway.
00:39After a few moments, Jonathan, his dog, and the unknown female
00:43are seen on camera.
00:44After about 30 minutes, the female leaves,
00:47but the same vehicle returns an hour later,
00:50which was when the shooting took place.
00:51The vehicle then drives by again about five minutes later,
00:55and the camera is able to pick up a blonde female as the driver.
00:57After looking into Jonathan's life and the people he knew,
01:01the police found out that the female driver
01:03was 34-year-old Colette Collins.
01:05It's cold-ish, so I'm not sure why they told you
01:12when they went out and taught you just now.
01:15I can assume what it's about.
01:20I wanted to stop by because I hadn't seen him
01:22since he had his DUI.
01:24and I was like,
01:26I'm just going to go check up on him.
01:27I know he's been suffering from depression
01:30and the restaurant closing and everything,
01:33and so I went over there to check up on him,
01:35and he was doing good.
01:37He had a peel mask on,
01:40and he was in his room.
01:41I guess I called him that at all the time.
01:44A facial.
01:46He had a facial on,
01:47and we just sat outside and talked.
01:51He just talked.
01:52Did he know you were coming by?
01:54No, he didn't know.
01:56He didn't know.
01:56He just signed his present.
01:57Yeah, I was on my way home,
01:59and I was like,
02:00I'm passing his house.
02:01I'm just going to stop by
02:02because I don't think we've ever really communicated
02:06over the phone.
02:07It's just like I'll see him,
02:08or he'll come by my house,
02:10and we'll hang out or whatever or whatnot.
02:13Jonathan owned a bar that Colette and her husband,
02:1638-year-old Sam Collins,
02:17would go to often.
02:19Jonathan and Sam had become very good friends,
02:21but because Colette had a history of cheating on her husband,
02:24Sam stopped spending as much time with Jonathan.
02:26We really didn't have that close of a relationship.
02:30He was just someone that I could talk to.
02:33What about he and your husband?
02:35How was their relationship?
02:37They had a good relationship.
02:39Yeah, I mean, at first,
02:40they were better friends than he and I were,
02:42and then I don't know if my husband
02:46just started getting jealous of him and I,
02:49like, hanging out.
02:51You mentioned the whole Facebook thing led to jealousy.
02:54Yeah, that was way before any of this,
02:57but, yeah, he, you know, he gets jealous,
03:01but so I was like, okay,
03:03and that's why he doesn't know I went over there that night.
03:05So I had the house, I'm like,
03:07what is it?
03:08Because I don't want him to get upset with me
03:10for going over there, you know, and...
03:13Do you and John have an intimate relationship?
03:18No.
03:19No.
03:20Have you ever?
03:20No.
03:22I didn't hear about what happened
03:25until last night,
03:28whenever I got home from work.
03:30And I was just like...
03:33How'd you find out?
03:34What?
03:34It's a WTOC app I have on my phone.
03:40And I did have a drink,
03:42vodka drink,
03:43before I left work.
03:44Not gonna lie.
03:46And, you know,
03:47so I had some emotions running
03:49and I wanted to see him,
03:50and so I stopped there before I went home
03:54because if I would have gone home,
03:55I wouldn't have been able to go out again.
03:57and so, you know,
03:59we were just, I guess, talking
04:02and then I could tell you
04:04how long it really was.
04:05I don't, I don't remember.
04:07I really don't remember.
04:08And then I left
04:10and I went and got two bottles
04:12of Pinot Noir
04:14and...
04:16From Parker's.
04:18Always lace open.
04:19From Parker's.
04:21And I know this is a bad call of judgment,
04:24but I did open that wine
04:26and my husband hasn't had a drink
04:28in over a year
04:30as of September 1st
04:32and he doesn't like for me
04:34that, you know,
04:35I don't want to bring it around him.
04:37So I kind of rode around
04:39and drank on that bottle of wine
04:41and I took the other bottle home
04:43with me
04:44and like gave it to my mom
04:46because she drinks red wine.
04:47So I brought your bottle of wine home.
04:49Yeah.
04:50And...
04:50Where did you ride around to?
04:54A little bit of, you know,
04:55and just kind of staying close to home.
04:57Mm-hmm.
04:58But 46
05:00and the farm area
05:03and back through his neighborhood.
05:06Like I think I went back through there
05:07maybe one time
05:09and I had another friend
05:10that kind of went by her house
05:12to see
05:12that she was still living there.
05:14and...
05:15So when you...
05:16You get there
05:17you leave.
05:19Which way did you leave?
05:22Which way did you come in?
05:24Did you come in by the pool
05:25or did you come in...
05:27I think I did come in by the pool
05:29and turned in.
05:30Now I can't remember
05:31if I went out and went that way
05:33or if I went out and went that way.
05:35Is that alcohol?
05:39I...
05:39I can't remember.
05:41Colette's story would explain
05:43why she was seen on camera
05:44driving around Jonathan's neighborhood.
05:46The problem is
05:47why was she there
05:49around the exact time
05:50the shooting took place?
05:51The other issue the detectives have
05:53is they know Jonathan
05:53was addicted to painkillers.
05:55They also know that
05:56Colette's husband
05:57had also been a pill addict
05:58and a dealer
05:59but Colette claims
06:00he had been sober for a year.
06:01Is it possible
06:02that Jonathan's death
06:03had something to do
06:04with her drug addiction?
06:04It's just confusing
06:06to where
06:07all of these
06:10drugs were so easily
06:12accessible to John.
06:15That's what got me.
06:17And where did he get
06:18the money?
06:20And did he owe them money?
06:22Or...
06:23I don't know.
06:24I don't really want to,
06:26you know,
06:27I don't try and get into that scene
06:29because I don't want to...
06:30And that's kind of the commonality
06:32of the people
06:33that you just talked about.
06:34and then you've got
06:35your husband.
06:36Y'all don't fit in the mix
06:37unless there's something
06:38going on on your end
06:41as well.
06:41I mean,
06:42a recovering addict
06:44or a recovering
06:46alcoholic
06:47does not put themselves
06:50in a social situation.
06:53And that's...
06:54I mean,
06:54that's what I'm waiting
06:55on you to tell me is,
06:56okay,
06:57yeah,
06:57my husband...
06:58And I don't care
06:59if he sells or deals
07:00or whatever
07:01with these guys.
07:03We're trying to find out
07:04who it is
07:07that
07:08John is indebted to.
07:11And this little network
07:12of folks,
07:14I mean,
07:14somebody's got to hold
07:15the answers.
07:16I really wouldn't know
07:18that information.
07:21You know?
07:22I mean,
07:23do you know
07:23if he
07:24and Josh
07:26and Corbett,
07:27are they all buying
07:28from the same person?
07:29I mean,
07:30your husband,
07:31is he using it all
07:32that you know of?
07:33No.
07:34That you know of?
07:35No.
07:35Yes.
07:37Do y'all own any weapons?
07:38No.
07:39No.
07:39No handguns,
07:41baby guns,
07:42shotguns.
07:42That's a rough area
07:44out there.
07:44Most people that live
07:45out there have something.
07:47No,
07:47he can't.
07:48We can't have weapons
07:50because he is
07:51a convicted felon.
07:52I can't believe
07:53anyone would do this
07:54to him,
07:55you know,
07:55to John,
07:57and we cried
07:58about it
07:59and I mean,
08:02I'm just,
08:03I don't know
08:04what you think.
08:05I really don't know
08:06what or who
08:08would do this.
08:11So you have
08:12four drinks.
08:14Nothing intimate
08:15happened.
08:16Nothing intimate
08:17happened.
08:18We hugged
08:18that thing twice.
08:22That facial
08:23was throwing me off.
08:24It wasn't very sexy
08:25at the time.
08:26That is weird.
08:28That facial.
08:30Colette explains
08:31that a month prior,
08:32the front door
08:33to their home
08:33was kicked in.
08:34Then two men
08:35stepped into the home
08:36and fired off
08:37several rounds
08:38from the shotguns
08:38they were holding.
08:39Her husband told her
08:40not to call the police
08:41because with his history,
08:43he didn't think
08:44it would go well
08:44for him.
08:45Why do you think
08:46somebody would come
08:48to your house
08:48and do that?
08:51From what I heard
08:53on the streets
08:54is that someone
08:55said we had
08:56all kinds of money
08:58on hand.
08:59And you can look
09:00in our bank statements
09:01and our
09:02we're like
09:04three months
09:05behind on rent.
09:07Right.
09:07We don't have,
09:08you know,
09:08that's from like,
09:09we don't have anything.
09:10Who do you think
09:10did that?
09:12I have no idea.
09:14And your husband
09:14doesn't have any
09:15as high?
09:15We have gone
09:17and talked
09:18and no one
09:20Do you think
09:20he would tell you?
09:22Who, my husband?
09:24Good question.
09:26And that's what
09:26I'm getting at.
09:27Like,
09:27as far as like,
09:29trust goes
09:30with you guys,
09:31aside from
09:32the
09:33infidelity,
09:35I guess,
09:35that he doesn't
09:36trust you for
09:37or, you know,
09:38he's paranoid about,
09:39would he tell you
09:44if he was back
09:45in the game?
09:46And the reason
09:46I ask that
09:47is because,
09:48again,
09:49look at the people
09:51that he's got
09:52around them.
09:54Around.
09:55I mean,
09:56he's not,
09:58you've been out of work,
10:00you know,
10:00I don't know
10:01how much money
10:01he's bringing in.
10:02He's not getting
10:03disability.
10:04And randomly,
10:05these people show up
10:06and shoot up
10:07your house
10:07and he doesn't
10:09want to call the cops.
10:09you know,
10:11if he's clean,
10:13did they go in the house
10:14looking around
10:15for anything?
10:16I mean,
10:17that's,
10:17there's,
10:18I know,
10:18it stinks.
10:19It does.
10:20It stinks.
10:21It does.
10:22Would he have had
10:22a stash for them
10:23to take?
10:25I know
10:25when he's on coke
10:27and pills
10:28and all of that
10:29and he knows
10:31that I would be
10:32gone
10:33the minute
10:34I saw it
10:35and so would
10:36our son.
10:37It troubles me
10:38to know
10:39that
10:42somebody
10:43comes into
10:44your house,
10:44kicks the door
10:45open,
10:47discharges a
10:47firearm
10:48where
10:50a family
10:51is housed
10:52regardless of
10:53whether or not
10:53they were there
10:54or not
10:54and you guys
10:55don't call
10:56the cops.
10:57Like,
10:58that just,
10:59it makes no sense
11:00to me.
11:00and I'm not
11:03going to sugarcoat it
11:04and tell you
11:05that,
11:06you know,
11:06I believe everything
11:07you're telling me
11:08because I don't.
11:09I mean,
11:10it's,
11:11there's too much
11:12going on
11:13around you guys
11:14for it
11:17to be as innocent
11:17as it is.
11:20All right.
11:20And,
11:21and obviously
11:22I think
11:22by the look
11:23on your face
11:24you probably
11:25know
11:25that
11:26I'm just upset.
11:28Like,
11:28sure.
11:29I mean,
11:29whether,
11:30whether you're
11:31concealing a relationship,
11:32whether your husband
11:34is back in the game,
11:35whether he was
11:35on a bender,
11:36why the cops were,
11:37I mean,
11:37all of these questions,
11:39they're unanswered
11:40and the responses
11:42that you're giving us
11:42don't make any sense.
11:44You know,
11:45it,
11:45I wouldn't be
11:46pressing you
11:47for those answers
11:48if I thought
11:49you were being honest.
11:50Um,
11:51the thing that,
11:52that I'm really
11:53having a hard time with
11:54is the incident
11:56at your house,
11:58your husband's
11:59involvement
11:59with these
12:00other guys.
12:01I mean,
12:01you guys may have
12:03been down here
12:03a short time.
12:05Some of these folks
12:06have been here
12:06for a long time.
12:07So we kind of know,
12:08like,
12:10it just,
12:12I don't know.
12:15And,
12:15and you're either
12:16going to somewhere
12:17deep down
12:17as I choose
12:18to,
12:18to tell me the truth
12:20or you're not.
12:23Well,
12:23I have been
12:24telling you the truth.
12:26I have been
12:27telling you the truth.
12:29And,
12:29as far as
12:30people that have
12:31been here
12:32longer,
12:32I mean,
12:34I don't know.
12:35That would be
12:35like hearsay
12:37or just like,
12:38I can't
12:38leave this
12:39happen.
12:41I really
12:42can't.
12:44For someone
12:45to do that
12:46in such a,
12:47in just a manner,
12:50it was done.
12:51I've never been
12:54to where I just
12:55saw him
12:56and that's
12:57the last hug
12:58I know I'm
12:58ever going to
12:59give him.
12:59I don't know.
13:00I'm just,
13:01I'm not good
13:01with death.
13:03And,
13:04especially,
13:05like,
13:06murder.
13:06I've never
13:09known anything
13:11like this
13:11before.
13:12Although
13:13Colette appears
13:14composed and
13:14shows none of
13:15the typical
13:15body language
13:16cues associated
13:17with deception,
13:18detectives decide
13:19to make one
13:19final attempt
13:20at pressing
13:20her to see
13:21if she'll
13:21admit to
13:22knowing
13:22anything
13:22about
13:22the
13:23murder.
13:23How did,
13:25how did you
13:26know that,
13:27because you
13:27said a couple
13:28times already
13:29that you were
13:29the last person
13:29to see him
13:30alive.
13:31What,
13:32what made you
13:33think that,
13:33you know,
13:34like,
13:34why,
13:34how did you
13:34know that?
13:35Well,
13:35I knew I was
13:36one of the
13:37last people
13:37at his house.
13:39I didn't know
13:40if there was
13:40anyone else
13:41that had come
13:41after me
13:42or who was
13:43there with
13:44them.
13:46But,
13:46you know,
13:47I knew that
13:47I was there
13:48that night.
13:49Your car was
13:50there with
13:51you in it
13:52like today.
13:53right before
13:54and right at
13:55the time
13:56that it
13:56happened.
13:58Okay.
13:59So,
14:00we've got
14:00all that on
14:00video.
14:01Okay.
14:02And,
14:03we're trying
14:05to figure out
14:06where the
14:07connection is
14:08there.
14:09Okay.
14:10And,
14:11as upset
14:12as you are
14:12about it
14:13and you're
14:15refusing to
14:16believe that
14:16your husband
14:17is involved
14:18in drugs
14:18anymore,
14:19that your
14:19husband's
14:19involved in
14:20any of that
14:21stuff,
14:21and yet you
14:22have
14:22people
14:23kicking
14:24the door
14:24shooting
14:25enough
14:25bullets
14:25to where
14:26they're
14:26picking up
14:26shells
14:27and still
14:27leaving
14:27some
14:28behind.
14:30But that's
14:31just a
14:31random thing
14:32that can happen.
14:33Apparently it doesn't
14:33have anything to do
14:34with anything.
14:37And you think
14:37that it sounds
14:39like somebody
14:39set your
14:40husband up
14:40for that,
14:41that,
14:41you know,
14:41set y'all's
14:42house up
14:42to get hit.
14:44But you don't
14:45think any of
14:46this has to
14:46do with drugs
14:47or any of
14:48that,
14:48and that there's
14:49no connection
14:50between,
14:51you know,
14:51you,
14:51it sounds like
14:52y'all have
14:52a pretty
14:52tight-knit
14:52group there.
14:54So what is,
14:56what are you
14:56not telling us
14:57there?
14:57Because we
14:57know that
14:58there is
14:58a good bit
14:59more,
15:00because there's
15:00a lot
15:01that we know
15:03that we
15:03haven't told
15:04you yet,
15:04but there's
15:04obviously a
15:06lot that
15:06you know
15:06that you
15:07haven't told
15:07us?
15:09I mean,
15:10I'm like
15:12rattling my
15:13brain at
15:14what it
15:14could be.
15:15I don't,
15:15I'm not quite
15:16sure how I
15:18feel like this
15:18is turning
15:19into,
15:21do I need
15:21to get a
15:22lawyer?
15:23As soon as
15:24Colette says
15:25lawyer,
15:26the detectives
15:26are forced to
15:27stop the
15:27interview.
15:28At this point,
15:29they believe
15:29that Colette's
15:30husband may
15:31have started
15:31selling drugs
15:31again,
15:32and perhaps
15:33John refused
15:33to pay his
15:34debts.
15:35They decide
15:35the best thing
15:36to do is
15:36interview her
15:37husband,
15:37and see
15:37what he
15:38has to
15:38say.
15:39Well,
15:39he was angry
15:40with Isaiah
15:41because he
15:42was spending,
15:43I mean,
15:44John was
15:44spending
15:44beaucoups of
15:45money with
15:46him on
15:46pills,
15:47like every
15:47day.
15:49He'd go
15:49through 10
15:50to 15
15:51of them
15:51things a
15:51day,
15:52and they're
15:52selling him
15:52at $30 a
15:53piece.
15:54You guys
15:54think that's
15:54like $400
15:55a day.
15:55Have it.
15:56John would
15:56support.
15:57All of a sudden
15:58he started
15:58having money
15:59trouble with
16:00the sipping
16:00cow thing or
16:01whatever.
16:02And he had
16:02been telling
16:03me about it
16:03because he'd
16:04stopped by
16:04sometimes on
16:05break.
16:06Then it's
16:06telling me
16:07about this
16:07and that
16:08about business
16:08because he's
16:09like,
16:09I can talk
16:09to you,
16:10you're a
16:10little bit
16:10smarter than
16:11those guys
16:11or whatever
16:12and you
16:12understand.
16:14And so he
16:15was having
16:16trouble with
16:16that and
16:17ran out of
16:18money.
16:19And he was
16:21angry because
16:21they wouldn't
16:22either front him
16:24pills for later
16:25or just give him
16:26some or whatever
16:26because he felt
16:27he spent so much
16:28money, why not?
16:30He just said
16:31that, well,
16:32we all need to
16:33band together and
16:34get him or
16:35whatever.
16:35and I'm
16:36like, what
16:36does he
16:37mean, band
16:37together?
16:38Like, who's
16:39banding together?
16:40I'm not banding
16:41together with
16:42anybody for
16:42anything that he
16:44has going on.
16:45I know that.
16:46I told that.
16:46Before you go
16:46further, how do
16:47you know, John?
16:48And at the time,
16:50you know, I had
16:51just got injured
16:52and I was
16:52seeking more
16:53medicine as
16:54well.
16:55So when I
16:56first heard this
16:56flag over a
16:57year ago is
16:59when the
17:01hospital sent
17:02me out with
17:03basically no
17:03medicine.
17:04So I went on
17:05the hunt for
17:06medicine.
17:07And that's how
17:08I ended up
17:08getting intertwined
17:10with these people
17:11and everything
17:13because I was
17:13buying pills to
17:15take me, what,
17:18your relationship
17:19with John,
17:22do you guys
17:23ever have any
17:23issues?
17:24or, I mean,
17:25tell me, how many
17:26times did you see
17:27him, you know,
17:28did he come over
17:28every day?
17:29Did you go over
17:29to his house?
17:30I went over to
17:31his house one
17:31time and he
17:33generally would
17:34come over to my
17:35house.
17:36And for a while
17:37there, for a
17:37couple weeks there,
17:38he came over
17:39nearly every day.
17:40But it was out
17:42of convenience,
17:43you know, that
17:43his work is there
17:45and his home was
17:46there, I think,
17:46and he would call
17:47me just to shoot
17:48the breeze or
17:49whatever.
17:50I mean, we're
17:51not here to jam
17:51you up in any
17:52way, but I
17:53just need
17:53complete honesty
17:54from you, okay.
17:56Have you ever
17:57had anything in
17:57your house that
17:58you sold to him
17:59such as narcotics
18:00or anything like
18:00that?
18:01No.
18:01You never sold
18:02him any drugs?
18:03No.
18:03Did you ever
18:04let him have
18:05any drugs that
18:06you had in the
18:06house before?
18:10What do you
18:10mean you're not
18:11trying to jam me
18:12up?
18:13I mean, what kind
18:13of question?
18:14What do you want
18:14to know?
18:15What I'm saying
18:15is I'm not going
18:16to arrest you for
18:17distributions of
18:18whatever you gave
18:19him.
18:20I'm just trying to
18:20establish a
18:21relationship that
18:22you had with him.
18:23Yes, he did come
18:24over and I did
18:25give him some
18:26medicine from time
18:27to time, yes.
18:28And did he pay for
18:29that medicine or
18:30did he give you
18:31items like a watch
18:32for that?
18:32Well, I think the
18:33reason he gave me
18:34this watch is because
18:35he knew he wasn't
18:36going to have any
18:36money and it was
18:37sort of his way of
18:38buttering me up.
18:39I got you.
18:39and then he told me he
18:40was going to pay me
18:41later and that was
18:42basically how our
18:43thing went.
18:43He was like, well,
18:44I'll pay you later.
18:45You know I'm good
18:45for it because I got
18:47these stocks and
18:48this going on and
18:49these comic books and
18:50you know about my
18:50watches, so why don't
18:51you just give me
18:52those and I'll pay
18:53you later?
18:54So I gave him some
18:55and gave him some
18:56and gave him some
18:57and then he didn't
18:59pay me.
19:00but I don't know
19:00how many totals
19:01do you think he
19:01got from me over
19:02however long that
19:03was.
19:08I don't know.
19:10And you're telling
19:11me you're not going
19:11to jam me up.
19:13I'll tell you,
19:14you're not even in
19:15our jurisdiction.
19:16Okay, you're actually
19:16in the Buford County
19:17jurisdiction with the
19:18Bluffton Police
19:18Department, so I'm
19:19not here.
19:20We're here to
19:20investigate a homicide.
19:21Yeah.
19:22Okay, we're not
19:22here to investigate
19:23a drug case.
19:24Yeah, I mean that
19:25was somewhat our
19:26relationship because he
19:27knows I get
19:27medicine so I can
19:29have it sometimes
19:30and I knew other
19:31people and I know
19:32I knew Isaiah as
19:34well.
19:35So there was that
19:36relationship there
19:37because there was
19:38part of the time,
19:39some of the time
19:39where I did have
19:40some of Isaiah's
19:42and then he would
19:43come and get them
19:43and go to work
19:44or whatever.
19:45Now, if he knew
19:46that, actually I
19:47think Isaiah might
19:47have been the first
19:48person to put me
19:49in touch with him
19:49now that I think
19:50about it.
19:50If you both knew
19:51Isaiah, why would
19:52he not go directly
19:52to Isaiah and go
19:53to you instead?
19:55Convenience.
19:56As far as location
19:57or location
19:58and...
19:59Sam admits that
20:05he would sell
20:05John medication
20:06when Isaac,
20:07who was their
20:07dealer, was out
20:08of product or
20:09not around.
20:09He also admits
20:10that John ran
20:11up a tab with
20:12him and he
20:12never paid.
20:13The detectives
20:14believe they are
20:14heading in the
20:15right direction
20:15but soon they
20:16will realize that
20:17Jonathan's death
20:18had nothing to
20:18do with drugs
20:19or his ability
20:20to pay for them.
20:21But I mean, I
20:22quit doing all
20:23that.
20:25As soon as I
20:25lost that money...
20:26I believe you,
20:27man.
20:27That's cool.
20:28That's cool.
20:29With John...
20:30I know y'all
20:31probably seen
20:32into my past.
20:33I used to do
20:34a lot of stupid
20:36stuff.
20:37I used to deal
20:37drugs.
20:38I got in trouble
20:38for it.
20:39Ended up getting
20:40shot over a year
20:41ago.
20:42And ever since then,
20:43I don't really
20:46want to talk about
20:47but I was in
20:48Allendale in the
20:48wrong place at the
20:49wrong time for
20:50if that tells you
20:51anything.
20:51So after all
20:53that, you know,
20:54I've really just
20:54been standing back
20:57from it, you know
20:58what I mean?
20:58And then the pill
20:59thing was just
20:59there because of
21:00my leg or
21:00whatever.
21:01And that's how
21:01I ended up getting
21:02involved with these
21:02people.
21:03And then Josh
21:04Moore and
21:05whatever.
21:06But go ahead.
21:07Do you think
21:08that John might
21:08have mistakenly
21:10got in his head
21:10that you were
21:11still selling and
21:12had money in the
21:14house or something
21:15like that?
21:15Possibly.
21:16Tell me about
21:17this incident that
21:19occurred with these
21:19guys coming up to
21:20your house.
21:21First, I was in
21:22my bedroom one
21:23night and I hear
21:26somebody tampering
21:27with the AC unit.
21:29And I go out
21:30first and my
21:31stepmother or my
21:32mother-in-law, I
21:33mean, she thinks
21:35it's raccoons because
21:36she'll throw scraps
21:40out in the yard or
21:41whatever.
21:43She's like, oh,
21:43it's probably a
21:44raccoon.
21:44I've seen him out
21:45there, you know.
21:46So I go out there
21:47and I look and I
21:48don't see anything
21:49and I go back in
21:50my room and then
21:51the next time I
21:52hear it, I hear
21:53somebody kind of
21:54talking.
21:55Yeah, so they
21:56were on my porch
21:57and I look through
21:58by my wife's vanity
22:00in our bedroom.
22:01I could see through
22:01the blinds and I
22:02could see over and
22:04I just saw a guy in
22:05a yellow jacket and
22:07then another figure.
22:08I couldn't really
22:09tell much more
22:10because I went back
22:11immediately, you know.
22:13And then, so
22:14whenever I saw
22:15that, I figured
22:16I'd try to spook
22:17them.
22:17So then I flipped
22:18the lights on in
22:19my room and came
22:19out in the den and
22:20flipped the lights
22:21on and said, get
22:22the hell out of here.
22:23You know what I
22:23mean?
22:23Like, we're calling
22:24911.
22:25Which we didn't.
22:26I just heard them
22:27bolt and I could hear
22:28them running across
22:29the yard and then I
22:30waited a little while
22:31and I saw a car leave
22:33from down the road
22:34calling butt.
22:34In Colette's
22:38version of this
22:38same story, she
22:40claimed that the
22:41two men came into
22:41the home and they
22:42fired several rounds
22:43into the walls and
22:44ceiling.
22:45How do you, from
22:46my understanding,
22:47there were some
22:47rounds, there were
22:49some bullet holes
22:49in your trailer.
22:51In my house?
22:52Yeah.
22:53Yeah, there are.
22:54There were some
22:54that were there when
22:55we moved in.
22:56So that didn't, so
22:58there were no
22:58bullet shots this
22:59night?
23:00This night that
23:01these guys came to
23:02the house and
23:02they didn't shoot
23:02at you?
23:03Is what I'm
23:03saying?
23:04Okay.
23:05And you said
23:06you're...
23:06I mean, that's
23:06what, that's kind
23:08of what I made
23:09Josh think because
23:10Josh starts all
23:10the rumors.
23:11Okay.
23:12So I did that
23:13on purpose.
23:14Okay.
23:15To try and
23:16hopefully make
23:20them think it's
23:21more severe so
23:22that maybe they
23:23leave me alone or
23:24something.
23:24What did you
23:25tell Josh?
23:26I told Josh that
23:27some guys came
23:28in and shot at
23:29me.
23:29Okay.
23:30And I shot at
23:31them, but I don't
23:31own guns.
23:33Okay.
23:33And I was
23:34lying when I
23:35said that.
23:35That never
23:36happened.
23:36That was my
23:37way of making
23:37him think that
23:38I was armed or
23:39somebody came to
23:39my house I could
23:40get rid of them
23:41or whatever because
23:41obviously I can't
23:42have a gun and I
23:43feel vulnerable over
23:44there.
23:45Who was home and
23:46when?
23:47When they came to
23:48or just me.
23:49But didn't you just
23:50say that your
23:51mother-in-law was
23:52there?
23:54You just said
23:55that you said
23:55something about
23:56the raccoon.
23:56And I quote
23:57mother-in-law in the
23:58house that time
23:59of robbery.
24:00No.
24:00I didn't say
24:01anything about a
24:02robbery.
24:02Not robbery.
24:03I'm sorry.
24:03I'm sorry.
24:03She was in the
24:04house.
24:04You were like,
24:05you need to take
24:06better notes.
24:07Okay.
24:07She was there the
24:08night when I saw
24:09the guys on the
24:10porch.
24:10Now the other,
24:11now there was a
24:12few nights that I
24:13heard people out
24:13there and stuff.
24:14Now the night that
24:15he's talking about
24:16when my door
24:17supposedly got kicked
24:18in, she wasn't
24:19there.
24:19I was there.
24:21Tell me about
24:22your relationship
24:24with your wife.
24:25I mean, you guys
24:26have been married
24:26for how long?
24:2814 years.
24:2914 years.
24:30Sure.
24:31Yeah.
24:31Okay.
24:32And you guys,
24:34did you guys have
24:35like a rocky point
24:36somewhere?
24:36What happened
24:37with that?
24:37A couple years
24:38ago.
24:40She just,
24:41I don't know,
24:42we were having
24:43issues.
24:43I think with her
24:44it might have
24:44been,
24:45some addiction
24:45issues she was
24:46having with pills
24:47and I was trying
24:49to get her to
24:49stop and she
24:50didn't want to
24:50stop.
24:51So she was
24:52addicted to pills?
24:54Yeah.
24:54And I was just
24:55trying to get her
24:55to stop.
24:56But when she
24:56gets in that
24:57mind frame,
24:58she,
24:59there's no
25:00stop.
25:01There's F-U
25:01because you
25:02want me to
25:03stop or you're
25:03trying to stop
25:04me.
25:05And she ended
25:06up taking
25:06off.
25:07But she
25:09ended up going
25:09up to Augusta
25:10and told me
25:13she was staying
25:13with her mother
25:14and her aunt.
25:18I looked into
25:19my phone records
25:20and realized
25:20that she was
25:21talking to
25:21somebody up
25:22there.
25:23She was
25:24talking to,
25:25are you
25:25looking around
25:25because I'm
25:26looking there?
25:27No,
25:27because I'm
25:27looking for my
25:28phone,
25:28that's all.
25:28that's what I
25:31do when I'm
25:32thinking about it.
25:33No,
25:34no,
25:34it had nothing
25:35to do with it.
25:35To try to
25:35remember.
25:36Oh,
25:36okay.
25:37Anyway,
25:38so,
25:40yeah,
25:41that went on.
25:42I saw on her
25:42phone that she'd
25:43been talking to
25:44another man.
25:44I figured out
25:45who it was
25:46and it's a guy
25:46named David
25:47Heyman and it
25:48turns out that
25:49it was her
25:49stepmother's
25:50brother,
25:52which was just
25:52terrible to me.
25:54So,
25:55shit,
25:56I can't,
25:56I can't remember.
25:57It's something I
25:58don't like to
25:59remember.
26:00That's okay.
26:00You know what I
26:00mean?
26:01I really don't want
26:01to talk about it.
26:02That's fine.
26:03I got to ask
26:04you,
26:05are you aware
26:06that she was
26:07over his house
26:08and that he
26:09was murdered?
26:15She did mention
26:16to me when she
26:17came home that
26:17she stopped by
26:18there.
26:19Okay.
26:20Why did she
26:21tell you she
26:21didn't tell me?
26:23No,
26:23I don't know
26:24if you knew
26:24or not.
26:24That's what I
26:24asked you.
26:25If you knew
26:25that she was
26:26over there.
26:26She told me
26:26that she stopped
26:27by.
26:28Does she
26:28normally stop
26:29by his house?
26:30That's what
26:30I asked her.
26:32Yeah.
26:32And she said
26:33no.
26:34She said
26:34she just
26:35wanted to
26:35stop by
26:36just because
26:37she had
26:38was concerned
26:41about him
26:41or whatever.
26:42Okay.
26:43Now,
26:43Tuesday night,
26:44where were
26:44you?
26:45I was at
26:46home.
26:46You were at
26:47home with
26:47my son and
26:48my mother-in-law.
26:50Your mother-in-law
26:50was home too?
26:53I mean,
26:53I did ask
26:54her the next
26:54day,
26:54have you been
26:55going over
26:56there?
26:56I was like,
26:57because,
26:58you know,
26:59because Josh
27:00called me and
27:01told me what
27:02happened and
27:02and then I
27:03was like,
27:04and then she
27:05said,
27:05well,
27:05I was over
27:06there yesterday
27:06at last
27:07night and I
27:07was like,
27:08why were you
27:08over there?
27:09You know,
27:10like,
27:10what the heck
27:10are you doing
27:11over there?
27:11And that's
27:12when she
27:12told me.
27:13And while I
27:14stopped by,
27:14because I
27:14was concerned,
27:15I was like,
27:15well,
27:16is this
27:16something that
27:16you've been
27:17doing?
27:17I was like,
27:18because I
27:19would like to
27:20know.
27:20Right.
27:21Do you think
27:21that she might
27:22have been
27:22intimate with
27:22him?
27:23I don't,
27:24I sure
27:25hope not.
27:25I mean,
27:25because,
27:26and not to
27:27bring up a
27:27sore subject
27:28with you,
27:28but you
27:28remember her
27:29behavior when
27:29she did
27:30dealt with
27:31your stepmom's
27:32son.
27:33Does she
27:33kind of exhibit
27:34the same
27:34behaviors over
27:35the past
27:35couple weeks
27:36with John?
27:39Mm-mm.
27:40Who do you
27:41think was
27:41involved with
27:42this?
27:43I honestly
27:44think that
27:45he incurred
27:47a drug debt
27:48with somebody
27:49else.
27:50Would,
27:51would you
27:51give the
27:52consent to
27:52search your
27:53house and
27:53your vehicle?
27:54No.
27:55You wouldn't
27:56give us
27:56consent to
27:56search your
27:57house and
27:57vehicle?
27:58No,
27:58that's just,
27:59okay.
28:00Feels like
28:00invasion of
28:01my privacy
28:01in there.
28:02That's fine,
28:02that's why
28:03we asked
28:03for consent.
28:04I figured
28:05I'd ask,
28:06you know,
28:06again,
28:07that just
28:07helps
28:07eliminate
28:08you more.
28:09Before they
28:10end the
28:10interrogation,
28:11the detectives
28:11have one
28:12last question
28:13for Sam.
28:13They want
28:14to know
28:14why his
28:15story about
28:15the two
28:15men on
28:16his
28:16property
28:16was
28:17different
28:17than
28:17his
28:17wife's
28:18version.
28:19Going back
28:19real quick
28:19again to
28:20that night,
28:21you know,
28:21the other thing
28:24picked up
28:25a couple
28:25of shell
28:26casings
28:27left from
28:27when those
28:27guys came
28:28in.
28:28She said,
28:29well,
28:29basically what
28:30she told us
28:30was that
28:30they kicked
28:32in the door,
28:32you're in
28:33the bedroom,
28:33they look
28:34in the
28:34bedroom,
28:34see you
28:35blindly fire
28:36a couple
28:36shots around
28:37the corner
28:37in your
28:38general
28:38direction
28:39and then
28:40take off
28:41basically
28:42is what
28:43happened.
28:46So,
28:46to get
28:47a story
28:48that different
28:49from what
28:50you've given
28:51us,
28:51it just
28:51kind of
28:52raises the
28:52questions about
28:53what's going
28:54on with
28:54that.
28:54I mean,
28:56I don't
28:56know why
28:57she thinks
28:58it happened
28:58just like
28:59that.
29:00I mean,
29:01it may not
29:01be that
29:02specific,
29:02but she
29:03did say
29:03she picked
29:04up some
29:04shell
29:05cases.
29:06Yeah,
29:07she,
29:07yeah,
29:08I remember
29:08her picking
29:08those up.
29:10So,
29:10where did
29:10this come
29:11from?
29:11I don't
29:11know.
29:13So,
29:13these guys
29:13did fire
29:14at you
29:14or no?
29:17No.
29:20I mean,
29:20it's not
29:21going to,
29:22the reason
29:22why I ask
29:22is it's
29:23not going
29:23to change
29:24anything.
29:24We just
29:24need to
29:25know,
29:25if somebody's
29:25willing to
29:26try to
29:26kill you,
29:27then they
29:28may also
29:28be trying
29:29to kill
29:29John.
29:30Yeah,
29:30they fired
29:30at me.
29:31I just don't
29:31want so
29:31messing with
29:32me.
29:33We're not
29:34here to
29:34mess with
29:34you.
29:35I already
29:35told you
29:35that.
29:36Yeah,
29:36they came
29:37through the
29:37door and
29:38fired at me.
29:38Okay.
29:39Did you
29:40have a gun
29:41and did
29:41you fire
29:41them?
29:41No,
29:41I hid
29:42in their
29:42closet
29:42and
29:43flipped the
29:43lights out.
29:44Okay.
29:46How many
29:46shots did
29:47they fire?
29:48Just two.
29:49How would
29:50me shooting
29:50back change
29:51any of that?
29:52Because it's
29:52going to scare
29:52them off.
29:53It's going to
29:53scare them off.
29:54They're going to
29:54know that you're
29:55protecting your
29:56house and they're
29:56not going to
29:57come back.
29:57I mean,
29:58I would scare
29:59them off.
29:59I would say
30:00that.
30:01Let's just
30:01say that I
30:02scared them
30:03off.
30:03Okay.
30:04You scared
30:04them off.
30:05Fair enough.
30:05All right.
30:06But I
30:07currently have
30:08no weapons
30:09or anything
30:09like that.
30:10Okay.
30:11Whose weapon
30:11was that that
30:12you used to
30:12scare them
30:13off with?
30:14I didn't
30:15necessarily do
30:16that.
30:16I scared
30:17them off.
30:18That's all
30:19I want to
30:19say.
30:20Okay.
30:21You can't
30:22tell us how
30:22you scared
30:23them off?
30:24I mean,
30:24you pretty
30:25much know
30:26already,
30:26so no,
30:27I can't.
30:28I mean,
30:28you...
30:29I don't
30:30know.
30:30That's why
30:30I'm asking.
30:31You know,
30:31again,
30:32you're the
30:32victim of
30:33this situation.
30:33You're
30:34allowed to
30:34defend yourself,
30:35especially in
30:36your house.
30:36You ever
30:36hear of the
30:37Castle Doctrine?
30:38What,
30:38does it say
30:39that felons
30:39can have
30:40firearms?
30:40I don't
30:41think so.
30:41Well,
30:41what it
30:42says is
30:42that you're
30:42allowed to
30:43protect your
30:43house.
30:44Yeah.
30:44Okay.
30:45I'm aware
30:45of that,
30:46but I don't
30:46have anything
30:47else to say.
30:48Okay.
30:48Without a
30:49lawyer.
30:49Okay.
30:50No.
30:51I can't.
30:51I understand.
30:52I'm not
30:52here to give
30:53you up.
30:53After asking
30:54to speak
30:55with a lawyer,
30:56the detectives
30:56were forced
30:57to let him
30:57go.
30:57At this
30:58point,
30:59the police
30:59were back
30:59to where
31:00they started
31:00and had
31:01no idea
31:01who killed
31:02Jonathan
31:02or why.
31:03A week
31:04later,
31:05Sam was
31:05pulled over
31:05for speeding
31:06and the
31:07police found
31:07some marijuana
31:08in his
31:08possession.
31:09They also
31:09found a
31:10single shotgun
31:11shell inside
31:11of his
31:11pocket.
31:12The shell
31:13matched the
31:13ones found
31:14in Jonathan's
31:14yard the
31:15day he was
31:15murdered.
31:16This gave
31:17the police
31:17probable cause
31:18to search
31:19Sam's
31:19home,
31:20but they
31:20came up
31:20empty-handed.
31:21The police
31:21also got a
31:22warrant to
31:23search his
31:23phone and
31:24they found
31:24a single
31:25text message
31:25Sam sent
31:26to one of
31:26his friends.
31:27The message
31:27read,
31:28I hope you
31:29don't wake
31:29up from
31:29this text.
31:30Put gun
31:31back of
31:31truck.
31:32The police
31:32tracked the
31:33number to
31:33an address
31:34not far
31:34from Sam's
31:34home.
31:35They spoke
31:36with the
31:36owner of
31:36the home
31:37who explained
31:38that yes,
31:38he had let
31:39Sam borrow
31:39a shotgun
31:40for protection
31:40and that
31:41Sam had
31:42returned the
31:42firearm recently.
31:43He then
31:44showed the
31:44investigators
31:45the shotgun
31:45and he told
31:46them that it
31:46hadn't been
31:47touched since
31:47Sam dropped
31:48it off.
31:49Several tests
31:50were run
31:50on the
31:50firearm and
31:51it came
31:52back that
31:52not only
31:52was it
31:53the same
31:53one used
31:53to kill
31:54Jonathan,
31:55but it
31:55was also
31:55covered in
31:56Sam's
31:56DNA.
31:57This was
31:57the break
31:58the police
31:58needed and
31:59Sam was
31:59arrested and
32:00charged with
32:00murder.
32:01Almost
32:01immediately
32:02after Sam
32:02was arrested,
32:03his wife
32:04asked to
32:04speak with
32:04a detective,
32:06claiming she
32:06wanted to
32:06confess to
32:07what happened.
32:08We,
32:08after I left
32:09John's,
32:10I went home
32:10and we
32:12get into a
32:12fight,
32:13Sam and
32:14I.
32:15What was
32:15the fight
32:15about?
32:16I don't
32:17even remember
32:18everything.
32:19He was
32:19mad that
32:19I went to
32:20John's.
32:21He was
32:21upset with
32:22me because
32:23I had
32:23already gone
32:25to John's
32:26and I
32:27had never
32:27talked to
32:29John without
32:30Sam around.
32:32So,
32:34he automatically
32:36thought something
32:37was up.
32:37There wasn't
32:38anything,
32:39but I was
32:40just concerned.
32:40I was truly
32:41concerned for
32:42John's.
32:42And I didn't
32:43know any of
32:43this had
32:44happened until
32:45I saw it
32:46in the news.
32:47And I
32:47just knew,
32:49like,
32:50I didn't
32:52know what
32:53to do.
32:53I was
32:53scared.
32:54I go to
32:55leave and
32:56he grabs
32:57me and
32:58you're not
32:58going anywhere
32:59without me
33:01and,
33:01you know,
33:03chases me
33:03down,
33:04gets in the
33:04car.
33:05And then
33:06at that
33:06point,
33:07I didn't
33:07You actually
33:07got in the
33:08car and
33:08were pulling
33:08away?
33:09Yes.
33:10Okay.
33:10And at that
33:11point,
33:12I didn't want
33:12to take the
33:13fight back
33:14to the
33:14house because
33:15of Chase
33:16being there
33:17and everything
33:18and we
33:19rode around
33:20talking.
33:20Where did
33:20the argument
33:21happen at
33:22that point?
33:24A lot of
33:25it was outside
33:25on the front
33:26porch.
33:28And he
33:29was getting
33:30really loud
33:31and,
33:32you know,
33:32I could
33:33control him
33:33so I
33:35just was
33:35like,
33:35I'm out of
33:36here.
33:36And he
33:37ended up
33:37getting in
33:37the car,
33:38I mean,
33:38like,
33:39chased me
33:39down,
33:39got into
33:40the car
33:40and we
33:42didn't go
33:42too far.
33:44Like,
33:44I don't even
33:45remember exactly
33:46if I even
33:47pulled out
33:47onto the
33:49road.
33:49I think it
33:50pulled right
33:50into our
33:52little drive
33:53that's where
33:54those cones
33:54are at the
33:55top of the
33:56hill and
33:57stopped.
33:58And then I
33:59was like,
33:59okay,
34:01I gotta get
34:01some sleep.
34:02I've gotta be
34:02at work at
34:038 in the
34:03morning.
34:04Like,
34:04I don't need
34:04this shit.
34:05Nothing's
34:05going on.
34:06Nothing's,
34:06you know,
34:07like,
34:07you have
34:08nothing to
34:08worry about
34:09with the
34:09Johns or
34:10anyone.
34:11I didn't
34:12know whenever
34:13he got the
34:14gun what was
34:14gonna happen.
34:16And I know
34:17that...
34:17So you
34:18went back
34:18to your
34:19house?
34:19Put him
34:19back to
34:20the house.
34:20Okay.
34:22And he
34:23had been
34:24carrying that
34:25gun since
34:27Cody gave it
34:28to him for
34:29protection from
34:30the door
34:31getting kicked
34:32in.
34:32Right.
34:33And, you
34:34know, he
34:34was constantly
34:36paranoid about
34:38someone coming
34:39back.
34:39and so he
34:42had that
34:42gun and
34:44then he
34:44was like,
34:45well, let's
34:45go talk to
34:46John.
34:46I want to
34:47confront him
34:48about you.
34:50And I was
34:50like, no,
34:51no, you
34:52know, no,
34:52I'm not
34:53doing that.
34:54And we
34:54rode around
34:55and you
34:56could, you
34:56know, and
34:56I'm like, I
34:57don't know what
34:58to do at
34:58this point.
34:59I don't know
35:00what to do.
35:01And we
35:01ended up
35:02getting into
35:03more of a
35:04fight and
35:05just, I
35:05threw my
35:06hands up and
35:06told him to
35:07get down.
35:07and I
35:09left.
35:10And then he
35:11called me and
35:12said, I need
35:13you to come
35:14get me.
35:15And I had
35:15no idea what
35:17happened, what
35:19was going on.
35:20He just kept
35:21saying, let's
35:23go, let's
35:23go, come
35:24on, let's
35:25go, where
35:25are you?
35:27And, you
35:28know, I'm
35:28like, what
35:29did you do?
35:30You know, did
35:30you talk to
35:31John?
35:31What did he
35:32say?
35:33You know, I
35:33was like, did
35:35you hear what
35:35he had to
35:36say?
35:36Because I
35:36know that
35:37him and
35:37I had
35:38nothing going
35:38on and
35:40he wouldn't
35:40say anything
35:41to me.
35:42Went home,
35:43I slept
35:44on the
35:44couch and
35:45he slept
35:46in the
35:46bed.
35:47In the
35:47end, Sam
35:48would be
35:49convicted of
35:49first-degree
35:50murder and
35:51he was
35:51sentenced to
35:51the rest
35:52of his
35:52life in
35:52prison.
35:53In
35:53exchange for
35:54her testimony
35:54against her
35:55husband,
35:56Colette was
35:56sentenced to
35:5715 years
35:57in prison.
35:58What do
35:59you think
35:59about this
35:59case?
36:00Should
36:01Colette have
36:01received the
36:02same sentence
36:02as her
36:02husband?
36:03Please
36:03share your
36:04thoughts in
