Homeless dogs, cats arrive in New York area to find 'fur-ever' homes

A chartered plane touches down on the tarmac in Morristown, New Jersey, with over 120 cats and dogs hoping for a second chance at life on a cloudy morning on Aug. 20, 2025. The flight was part of a life-saving mission organized by Greater Good Charities and NBCUniversal Local as part of the 11th annual Clear the Shelters campaign, a nationwide initiative focused on pet adoption and animal welfare. The airlift transported animals from nine overcrowded shelters across Louisiana and Alabama to partner shelters in New Jersey and New Hampshire, where they now await adoption. The airlift also highlighted a growing issue: overcrowding in US shelters and an increase in pet surrenders due to financial hardship.

00:00Thank you so much to everybody!
00:10Where's the kitties?
00:14We got cats coming off us right now.
00:30Greater Good Charities and NBC are here today partnering on a lifesaving shelter pet airlift
00:47as part of the 11th annual Clear the Shelters campaign.
00:51We are transporting more than 120 at-risk shelter dogs and cats from shelters in Louisiana
00:58and Alabama to New Jersey and New Hampshire.
01:02So the shelter pets today are coming from nine overpopulated shelters across Alabama and Louisiana.
01:09And they're coming here to the Northeast to several shelters across New Jersey and New
01:14Hampshire.
01:15So we're able to spread the love among many shelters in the Northeast so that not one community
01:22is taking on all of the pets.
01:25We have all types of dogs and cats.
01:32We have all types of dogs and cats.
01:38We have all types of dogs and cats.
01:44All sizes and breeds.
01:57They just need a second chance.
02:01They are coming from shelters that are facing daily challenges of overpopulation.
02:09And this airlift as part of the Clear the Shelters campaign is truly giving them the second chance
02:15that they need to find a new adoptive home and a new life and get that happy ending that
02:22they deserve.
02:23We're taking about 60 dogs and cats back to our shelter in Madison, New Jersey.
02:28They'll get fed.
02:29They'll get food.
02:30Each of them has their own run.
02:33We care for them.
02:34We give them blankets and toys to play with.
02:38And then that's when the magic happens, you know, because people come in to adopt.
02:43And it's such a wonderful feeling to see them go on to loving homes, knowing that where they were before,
02:49they may not have had the same opportunity.
02:51So it's a really exciting, wonderful day.
02:54People often understand that you can do both.
02:56You can help your local shelters.
02:58We can help our partners in New York and New Jersey.
03:01We also have to help our partners down south.
03:03There is a huge overcrowding problem in the south of the United States.
03:08It's very difficult.
03:10You know, so many shelters just have too many animals and not enough adopters.
03:14Transport like this one truly save lives.
03:16It's very, very important.
03:18I think life saving knows no boundaries.
03:21There's, it's got to be done.
03:23So we can help both our local partners and help the animals in New York and New Jersey
03:28and help our shelter partners down south.
03:30And I think it's very important to do both.
03:34There are only eight weeks.
03:35Oh my God.
03:36Yes.
03:37What are you doing?
03:38What are you doing?
03:43What are you doing?
03:44Hi.
03:45What's up?
03:46Here.
03:47What's going on?
03:48Here's your belly.
03:49I'm sorry.
03:50Oh my God.
03:51It just looks so tiny.
03:52This is the cutest thing.
03:57It's such a special place in my heart because I have such a great love for animals.
04:04I almost feel we, we don't deserve them.
04:07They are so good and they all deserve a beautiful life.
04:10I have a daughter, Dr. Gabrielle Catania.
04:12She's a veterinarian.
04:13So the love for animals has been instilled in our families for a long time.
04:18And I'm here to use my platform to spread the word and hope that it can save and help animals
04:25and charities like Clear the Shelters and Greater Good.
04:28How is that?
04:29Oh...
04:30Oh, yeah.
04:31Oh.
04:32Oh...
04:33Oh.
04:34Ah.
04:35Oh...
04:36Oh...
