00:00they had their whole lives in front of them they were the couple that you would see and you'd know
00:10instantly that they were meant for each other I remember Shane just beaming that he was going to
00:16be a dad again he loved Southburn he loved the house and I was really happy there and I loved
00:22being sort of out in the countryside the only thing threatening to spoil their rural idyll
00:28is life with their neighbor there had been a difficult relationship that had progressively
00:34got worse I had a bad feeling about him I wasn't happy and that he was living next door
00:43his hatred for this this young couple unbeknown to them is what gives his life purpose over the course
00:55of a year that hopes for a happy future turned to dust they were going out for an Italian meal
01:02for this young couple it was an evening of of joy
01:07I saw that Shane had done a check-in saying date night with my love I didn't realize that that
01:16would be there last night out he told me he was gonna kill us both you both gonna die tonight
01:23in the East Yorkshire countryside Laura Sugden and her partner Shane Gilmer are getting ready to go out for dinner
01:49it was January the 12th and myself and Shane had booked in to go to a local restaurant we'd been wanting to go for a while
01:58they were always out and about and out for meals it was almost sickening how in love that they were
02:07there's has been a whirlwind romance just everything sort of happened from there really really quite quickly
02:15um we're sort of living together and then the next thing we was having a baby
02:20Shane had said to me what's the best thing that could happen like I couldn't love you anymore
02:26we're perfect for each other having a baby's only gonna just but it'll just make things better
02:31we were delighted both myself and her mother at the news
02:37they seemed so happy together
02:41Laura liked being looked after and Shane just took it to a whole nother level with her
02:49I think Shane thought because I'd not been keeping my food down very well that
02:54it was sort of something nice that I might enjoy a meal for
02:57for the first time in a while so yeah it was a bit of a treat
03:00the restaurant is a 40-minute drive from their cottage in Southburn
03:10outside the market town of Driffield in Yorkshire
03:12you can sort of go through it and then you've missed it it's that small
03:18I always used to go and visit and the girls would play in the garden
03:23and she had a trampoline set up for them
03:26there was just more room for them to run around and we knew they were safe
03:30the semi-detached red brick house is surrounded by fields and woodland
03:35the two houses quite old cottages the back garden in particular looked out onto a paddock with horses
03:44it was it was a lovely setting it was just idyllic really
03:47she had a next-door neighbour but other than that there wasn't many houses around her
03:52we'd just got a new car actually the day before Shane had two children to a previous relationship
04:08and obviously I had Isabelle and we were having another one on the way so we ended up having to get a seven seater
04:15Shane was very excited about it
04:20I think they'd only had it a matter of hours and I think he'd been outing it numerous times already
04:26my daughter was going to her dad's for the weekend so he collected hair on the Friday
04:35and then we sort of went went off for a nice evening really
04:39there was a check-in at that location at Gina's to say that they were out for a meal
04:46I saw that and I thought they're not going to be home for a little while
04:49so I'll head straight home and then I'll pop in and see them the next day
04:53at the restaurant Laura struggles to unwind
05:01she's troubled by their next-door neighbour
05:05Shane and Laura they were living next door to a strange character
05:11a man called Anthony Lawrence
05:13they didn't see very much of him
05:18he used to come and go mainly just to take the dog out or get in his vehicle
05:24he was a very strange man
05:29he'd never say hello even if I said hello to him
05:32he wouldn't make eye contact
05:34I started to hear little bits about they were having some problems with him
05:42back in Southburn Anthony Lawrence is acutely aware that his neighbours are out
05:57for the past year he's been nursing a grudge against them
06:01and it's growing
06:03this is somebody who's showing indications of really having developed a hatred
06:10of this hopeful optimistic young couple
06:15them going out on this joyful innocent night out
06:21it presented an opportunity for him to culminate his campaign of hatred
06:26myself and Shane are both quite quick eaters
06:35so we weren't in there particularly long
06:37it's actually got her necks attached to it
06:41so we did actually go to get just some baby grows
06:44while they shop for clothes for their unborn baby
06:54Anthony Lawrence makes his way up to his attic
07:00what's up there reveals the level of his obsession
07:05Anthony Lawrence has been meticulously removing bricks from the attic
07:13that separates the two houses
07:15to enable him to move about from his side of the house
07:21to their house with minimal disturbance
07:25Laura and Shane set off from Hull
07:39they have a couple of stops to make before returning home
07:43my brother wanted to see the car
07:45so we did actually just call to Driftfield where my family lived
07:48show my brother the car and then sort of headed back
07:51we called at Tesco's and Shane got me some of the non-alcoholic ciders
07:57then we drove back to Southburn
08:00Anthony Lawrence moves across into their loft
08:14and drops down through the hatch into Laura and Shane's house
08:18he was waiting for them
08:21I said to Shane I was like I'm just going to go upstairs
08:26I'll just watch telly upstairs
08:27watch a film or something because I am tired
08:29and that's when she noticed that something was on the floor
08:33below the loft space
08:35I saw just like a really tiny
08:39like a dirty
08:41like sort of muddy mark
08:44I mean it was probably about as big as a five pence piece
08:47nobody wore shoes in my upstairs
08:50just I couldn't work out where I'd come from
08:53Laura cautiously opens the three bedroom doors
08:59one by one
09:02she opens one bedroom door
09:05nothing there
09:06pushed open my bedroom door
09:08you know there's nothing there
09:09I just got a really strange feeling
09:12when I opened Isabel's bedroom door
09:14it's like I knew that
09:16I didn't think somebody was in my house
09:17I knew he was in my house
09:19Laura knows she is going to come face to face
09:27with Anthony Lawrence
09:29and there he is
09:31standing
09:32in the third bedroom
09:34completely calm
09:36with a crossbow
09:3855 year old Anthony Lawrence
09:55has nursed a grudge
09:57for a year
09:58now he's in Laura's home
10:01armed
10:02and extremely dangerous
10:03he told me
10:05he was going to kill us both
10:06just like that
10:09you know
10:09you're both going to die tonight
10:11on his head
10:13is a head torch
10:14and in his hand
10:16a crossbow
10:17its deadly potential
10:19is obvious
10:20when I saw it
10:21I thought it was a bow and arrow
10:22when I've seen a bow and arrow
10:23they're usually wooden
10:24and this was looked
10:25more like a machine
10:26I did notice the bolts
10:28on the sort of
10:30on it
10:30I thought gosh
10:31they are unbelievable
10:32such a degree
10:36of evil
10:38where he just simply wanted
10:40to murder two people
10:42it's your worst nightmare
10:45Laura Sugden
10:50has lived next to Anthony Lawrence
10:52for more than six years
10:53though never close
10:55the pair have been civil
10:57he did really keep himself
10:58to himself
10:59to an extent
11:00he had told me
11:02that he had been
11:03in prison previously
11:04but he didn't go into
11:05a lot of detail
11:06about what he'd been
11:08in prison for
11:09living in this isolated
11:12but
11:13almost shared space
11:15there are moments
11:16where their lives
11:17do overlap
11:18he took my dogs
11:21for a walk
11:21my internet
11:23wasn't working
11:23at one point
11:24and he
11:25gave me his wifi
11:26password
11:27and said
11:27if any problems
11:28just give me a ring
11:30because he knew
11:30that I was on my own there
11:31he was wary of me
11:35and I believe
11:36that was simply
11:37because I was
11:38an ex-police officer
11:39he had a look about
11:41in which
11:42you can't put your finger
11:44on it sometimes
11:45but you know
11:45there's something
11:46that you don't trust
11:47let's put it that way
11:48Laura was suspicious
12:01that Tony was growing
12:02marijuana
12:04the smell of cannabis
12:06was horrendous
12:11we had fires upstairs
12:13in old fires
12:14in my house
12:15in Isabel's bedroom
12:17and the smell
12:18was coming through
12:19so much so
12:19that I ended up
12:20moving her
12:20into the spare bedroom
12:22Laura believes
12:24that her neighbour
12:25isn't just cultivating
12:26the drugs
12:27he's also selling them
12:29and making little effort
12:31to disguise that fact
12:32something just
12:34don't add up here
12:35is not somebody
12:37that's got many friends
12:38nobody sort of visits
12:39but then when these cars
12:40are coming
12:41they're in there
12:41for sort of two minutes
12:42at a time
12:42and then they're straight
12:43leaving
12:43and I thought
12:44it just seemed really odd
12:45and then obviously
12:45that went with the smell
12:47when it was just Laura
12:50and her young daughter
12:51as his neighbour
12:52I think
12:53this was tolerable
12:55this was comfortable
12:57for Anthony Lawrence
12:58Shane Gilmer
13:03moves in with Laura
13:04in the autumn of 2016
13:06after their office romance
13:08blossoms
13:09I remember her telling me
13:12about someone at work
13:13that she'd met
13:15and myself and Laura
13:18went on a night out
13:20in Beverley
13:21and it was just me and her
13:23and we were having
13:24a girly chat
13:25and a few drinks
13:26and then next thing
13:27he pops up
13:28behind both of us
13:29was taking a selfie
13:30and that was the first time
13:33that I met him
13:33I could tell
13:36by the way they looked
13:37at each other
13:37that it was
13:38it was going to develop
13:39into more than just friends
13:41he made me laugh constantly
13:44Shane was funny
13:46he didn't take life
13:49too seriously
13:49though it was obvious
13:51that he took his job
13:52very seriously
13:53because
13:54moving people around
13:56and finding them
13:57social housing
13:58is not an easy job
14:00he genuinely cared
14:02about people
14:03he used to come home
14:04from work
14:04and say to me
14:05like I can't
14:05I've got to do something
14:06you know
14:07I've got to do something
14:07and he did his job
14:10it was his life
14:11his kindness
14:13was just
14:15you know
14:15seconds and on
14:16I've never met
14:16anybody as kind
14:17in my life
14:18he took me to Morocco
14:18for my birthday
14:19we went to Bruges
14:21do you like ice skating
14:24she's never been on an ice rink
14:28before
14:28but Shane just had a way
14:31of encouraging her
14:32and bringing the best
14:33out of her
14:33at the same time
14:34I think it was only
14:38a matter of months
14:39before he was living
14:40there with her
14:41and Isabel
14:41and it was just like
14:44they'd been together
14:45for years
14:45he came to stay
14:48and just never really left
14:49and it became quite evident
14:51that I didn't really
14:52want him to leave
14:52then the next thing
14:54we was having a baby
14:55father's main concern is
15:00is your daughter
15:01going to be with someone
15:02who's going to look after them
15:04and I felt that
15:05the kind of person
15:06that we got to know
15:08in Shane
15:08that she was in
15:09very good hands
15:10I could see
15:12Laura and Shane
15:13together
15:14for the rest
15:14of their lives
15:15Shane moving in
15:20marks a change
15:21in Laura's relationship
15:22with her neighbour
15:23Anthony Lawrence
15:24Tony had started
15:27playing
15:28loud music
15:29I just sort of
15:31ignored it
15:32but then it would
15:33continue to like
15:34you know
15:3412, 1 o'clock
15:35in the morning
15:36did become
15:37a bit of a pain
15:38I just thought
15:39it's really strange
15:40that this is all
15:41just starting up
15:42and there's never
15:42been anything
15:43for sort of
15:43years on end
15:44I just thought
15:46he was a harmless
15:47oddball
15:48I didn't see
15:49any threat
15:50to them
15:51from him
15:52I just thought
15:53for whatever reason
15:54he decided
15:55he didn't like
15:55having them next door
15:57but in January
16:012017
16:02all of that
16:03changes
16:03when a minor
16:05incident
16:05escalates
16:06into a violent
16:07confrontation
16:08myself and Shane
16:16were sat
16:16just playing
16:17a game
16:17of Monopoly
16:17it was a weekday
16:19night
16:19it got to like
16:21sort of 10 o'clock
16:21and we could
16:22hear the music
16:23from next door
16:24that had obviously
16:24started up again
16:25really loud
16:26so we actually
16:27muted our telly
16:28and just listened
16:28sort of to his
16:30sort of made a bit
16:31of a jerk
16:31about it
16:32Shane had said
16:34to me
16:34look if it's still
16:34going on
16:35when we go to bed
16:35I'll just go around
16:36and just ask him
16:38if he'll turn it down
16:39he goes to the front
16:41door of Anthony's house
16:42and knocks on the door
16:44Shane had actually
16:46gone round to the front
16:47of the house
16:48but we always used
16:49the back
16:50so Tony had shouted
16:51to him
16:52to come round the back
16:53it's clear
16:55it's clear that the music
16:55was being played
16:57in some kind of anger
16:59Shane made an entirely
17:02reasonable request
17:03asking him
17:04to turn down the music
17:06to Shane
17:07that was just a normal
17:09simple request
17:10little did he know
17:12that that was
17:13an act that triggered
17:15a campaign
17:16of hatred
17:18in Anthony Lawrence
17:20I just had a load
17:22of sort of
17:22commotion outside
17:23so I've obviously
17:24gone outside
17:25into the back garden
17:26Tony was just
17:28coming down
17:29his pathway
17:30with an axe
17:32saying that he was
17:34going to
17:34effing kill us
17:36just sort of
17:38rambling about
17:38he knew what
17:39Shane did for a job
17:40so I just said
17:41to Shane
17:42look just
17:42come inside
17:43I'd gone into work
17:48I said
17:49you know
17:49something sort of
17:50really strange
17:50happened last night
17:51explained it to them
17:51and they said to me
17:52straight away
17:52you need to report
17:53that to the police
17:54or it's a threat
17:54to kill
17:55we rang them
17:58Shane spoke to them
17:59on the phone
17:59and sort of
18:00told them
18:00what happened
18:01from that moment
18:03on
18:04it just spiraled
18:05that was when
18:06he really did
18:07turn into
18:07a horrible person
18:09he was just
18:11making their
18:12life hell
18:12it became
18:14increasingly frustrating
18:15the amount of
18:16sort of times
18:16that we were
18:17calling and saying
18:17look I'm
18:19basically telling you
18:20that somebody's
18:20doing something
18:21that's illegal
18:21and they shouldn't
18:22be doing it
18:22there was the
18:26situation with
18:28a smell of
18:30cannabis
18:30and also
18:31noise
18:32and also
18:33he was making
18:34loud phone calls
18:35really shouting
18:37and bawling
18:37to somebody
18:38at the end
18:38of the phone
18:38horse manure
18:40was dropped
18:41in the garden
18:42he'd thrown
18:45rubbish
18:45and dog waste
18:47into a garden
18:47I just thought
18:50he was causing
18:51unnecessary trouble
18:52and this is not
18:55just somebody
18:56defending their own
18:57space
18:58somebody a bit
18:58angry
18:59this is somebody
19:01who's
19:01who's actually
19:02festering
19:04there are behaviours
19:05here that are
19:05maliciously driven
19:07and this is always
19:08a big warning sign
19:10from that day on
19:12I was never
19:13ever sort of
19:13settled in that house
19:14it got to the point
19:22where they simply
19:24had to report
19:25this man
19:26not only to the
19:27council
19:27but also to the
19:29letting agents
19:30who were renting
19:31that property out
19:33they were really good
19:35actually
19:36so they said
19:37that they would do
19:38an inspection
19:38as part of the
19:39taking over
19:39of the properties
19:40a young female
19:42estate agent
19:43had to do an
19:44inspection of his
19:45house
19:46and when she
19:48emerged
19:49she was
19:50visibly disturbed
19:52and ultimately
19:54the estate agents
19:55issued
19:56an eviction
19:57order
19:58to Anthony Lawrence
19:59that week
20:10prior to
20:10the 12th of January
20:12his car was
20:13away for like
20:14one night
20:14then it would be
20:15back and then
20:16it was away again
20:16I think I lived
20:19there six or seven
20:19years
20:20and I'd never
20:22ever known him
20:23stay away
20:23overnight
20:24what's going on
20:26Shane just sort of
20:28said well
20:28he's been evicted
20:29so he's obviously
20:30he's obviously
20:32moving
20:32I can't imagine
20:34somebody that's
20:36been so aggressive
20:37towards us
20:38is just going to
20:40just go so
20:41quietly
20:41this is a man
20:44who was
20:45plotting
20:46planning
20:47he was getting
20:48himself ready
20:49to do something
20:50I just felt like
20:53he knows
20:54that it's down
20:55to us
20:55why he's been
20:56evicted
20:57and I can't
20:58see somebody
20:58like him
20:59knowing that
20:59and just
21:00leave it
21:01inside the
21:03house next
21:04door
21:04Laura and
21:05Shane's
21:05neighbour
21:06Anthony
21:06Lawrence
21:07is collecting
21:08an arsenal
21:09of weapons
21:10Anthony
21:11Lawrence
21:11was acquiring
21:12crossbows
21:14more importantly
21:16he actually
21:17altered
21:18the bolts
21:19to make
21:20them more
21:20lethal
21:21getting ready
21:23for his attack
21:25on this young
21:26couple
21:26every day
21:27that passed
21:28he just
21:28became more
21:29determined
21:29more committed
21:30to what he
21:31was doing
21:31so he was
21:33tooled up
21:34to the hilt
21:35ready for this
21:36attack
21:36madly in love
21:52and expecting
21:53their first
21:53child together
21:54Laura Sugden
21:56and Shane
21:56Gilmer
21:56are out
21:57for a romantic
21:58meal
21:59unbeknownst to
22:01them
22:02their volatile
22:03neighbour
22:0355 year old
22:04Anthony Lawrence
22:05has broken
22:06into their
22:06house
22:07in East
22:07Yorkshire
22:08and is
22:09lying in
22:10wait for
22:10them to
22:10return home
22:11I didn't
22:12think somebody
22:13was in my
22:13house
22:14I knew
22:14he was
22:15in my
22:15house
22:15I've
22:21sort of
22:21said
22:22what are
22:22you doing
22:22in my
22:22house
22:23Tony
22:23and I
22:23think
22:24that's
22:24when
22:24Shane's
22:24obviously
22:25heard
22:25me
22:26say
22:26his
22:27name
22:27I
22:29sort of
22:29backed
22:29into
22:30my
22:30bedroom
22:30Shane's
22:31then
22:32obviously
22:32come up
22:32the
22:32stairs
22:33Anthony
22:38Lawrence
22:38fires the
22:39crossbow
22:39at
22:40Shane
22:40I
22:44wasn't
22:44aware
22:44that
22:44Shane
22:45was
22:45actually
22:46shot
22:46because
22:46the
22:46crossbow
22:47was
22:47silent
22:47and
22:48Shane
22:48just
22:48sort
22:48of
22:48fell
22:49down
22:49to the
22:50side
22:50of
22:50the
22:51bed
22:51like
22:53bleeding
22:53profusely
22:55I
22:58have
22:58obviously
22:59tried
22:59to
22:59go
22:59to
23:00the
23:00edge
23:00of

23:02he
23:02wouldn't
23:02let
23:02me
23:03do
23:03that
23:03I
23:04pleaded
23:05with
23:05him
23:05begged
23:06him
23:06he
23:07was
23:07not
23:08going

23:11Lawrence
23:12at
23:12this
23:12point
23:13at
23:15first
23:15I
23:15tried
23:15denying
23:16that
23:16we
23:17haven't
23:17made
23:18contact
23:18with
23:18the

23:24then
23:24he

23:30I
23:33said

23:34I'll
23:35retract
23:35what
23:35we
23:36said
23:36I'll
23:36ring
23:36the
23:37police
23:37I'll
23:38ring

23:48resolute
23:49so
23:50determined
23:50to

23:52and
23:52what
23:52he
23:52saw
23:53was
23:53an
23:54almost
23:54heroic
23:55crusade
23:56and
23:58that's
23:58when
23:59he's
23:59shot

24:01it's
24:04gone
24:05into
24:05the top
24:06of my
24:06head
24:06and
24:06I've
24:07pulled
24:07out
24:07that's
24:08when
24:08the
24:08blood
24:09started
24:09to
24:09drip
24:10down
24:10my
24:10face
24:10I
24:10felt
24:10really
24:11disorientated
24:13when
24:15he
24:15couldn't
24:16reload
24:17the
24:17crossbow
24:17fast
24:18enough
24:19to
24:19finish
24:20my
24:20daughter
24:20off
24:21he'd
24:22knelt
24:23on top
24:23of her
24:24got
24:25control
24:25over
24:26my
24:26hand
24:26actually
24:27while
24:27I
24:27had
24:27my
24:27hand
24:28still
24:28on
24:28the
24:28bolt
24:29and
24:29pushed
24:30this
24:30crossbow
24:31bolt
24:31into
24:32her
24:32throat
24:32Laura
24:35has been
24:35shot in
24:36the head
24:36and stabbed
24:37in the
24:37neck
24:38on the
24:39floor
24:39bleeding
24:40heavily
24:40is
24:41Shane
24:41the
24:42crossbow
24:43bolt
24:43has
24:44pinned
24:44his
24:44arm
24:45to
24:45his
24:45side
24:45he's
24:46unable
24:47to
24:47defend
24:47himself
24:48poor
24:48Laura
24:49I thought
24:50I'm going to have to fight for both of us
24:52I actually overpowered him
24:56sort of sat on him then
24:58with the arrow
24:58that was out of my neck
25:01and I was trying to sort of
25:03injure him with it
25:04I was saying Shane
25:07please
25:07can you help
25:08but obviously I knew that there was no way that he was going to be able to
25:10Lawrence breaks free and makes his way back to the bedroom where his other crossbows
25:17remain
25:18and at that point I've just sort of been sat on the floor like holding Shane's hand
25:22um you know and he's just said to me you need to get out of this house now
25:27I'll never forgive you if you don't look after look after the baby as well
25:33so I've obviously gone down the stairs
25:36um I heard him come down maybe like two or three stairs
25:40I've then left the property like ran outside into the back
25:45I've then gone sort of down the street
25:49Anthony Lawrence is almost in some kind of trance now
25:53and um when Laura finally manages to make her escape
25:58it it it's like he come
26:00it's almost like he comes to
26:01I needed to get him out of away from Shane
26:06so I thought if I can get somebody there sort of quickly
26:08then we're going to be all right
26:10I've run up that driveway
26:15but I heard his car um sort of coming from that direction
26:19so I knew that he had left the property
26:21but I didn't sort of know which direction he was going in
26:24so I've just ran and sort of waited for him to go past
26:29so he hasn't seen me
26:30I just remember knocking on the door and then I collapsed
26:34I'm Shona Kilner and in January 2018
26:41I was a serving police officer with Humberside Police
26:45I was contacted in the early hours of Saturday the 13th of January
26:53from um the family liaison coordinator
26:56and she informed me that there had been an incident
26:59in Little Village not too far from where I lived
27:02and for that reason she asked if I was available to be deployed
27:06so I travelled to Hull
27:10to the major incident room and received a briefing
27:13the police had received a 999 call from um a lady called Laura Sugden
27:21who had been um attacked by her neighbour
27:25and her partner Shane Gilmer had also been attacked
27:28the neighbour had fled the scene
27:32and there was an armed response
27:35a manhunt out looking for him
27:37in Hull Royal Infirmary
27:46Laura and Shane are both receiving emergency treatment
27:49I remember sort of constantly saying
27:52you know when can I see him
27:54I had a feeling that he was in the room next to me
27:58and in the beginning it sounded really busy in there
28:01there was a lot of sort of noise in there
28:03and then it just went completely silent
28:06and then doctors came in and just said
28:11I just said is
28:12is he dead
28:14and they said yeah
28:15my body sort of felt it
28:20as it happened
28:22that's the only way I can describe it
28:24if they'd have come in and said any different
28:25I'd have struggled to believe them
28:27because I just
28:27something like
28:28strange to say about it
28:30I just felt like something died in me as well
28:31I saw my heart out
28:39for them
28:41and for you know Shane's family
28:43it was just unbelievable
28:45I saw my daughter's future
28:51being destroyed really
28:54in that instant
28:56Medics are aware
29:01that Laura is halfway
29:03into her pregnancy
29:04they turn their attention
29:06to the unborn baby
29:08you know they said to me
29:10that they didn't think
29:10that she would have
29:12a baby would have survived
29:13and then they put the Doppler on
29:16and yeah she was
29:17her heart was mad
29:19beaten
29:20I walked into the
29:24onto the ward
29:25and into the room
29:26where Laura was
29:27and knew straight away
29:28that something horrible
29:29had happened
29:30a scene which was
29:33like something from a video
29:35armed police
29:36everywhere in the hospital
29:38this man was still on the loose
29:41they were concerned
29:43that possibly
29:44he would want to
29:46finish the job off
29:48which was to kill my daughter
29:49finding Anthony Lawrence
29:54is crucial
29:55and the person
29:57best placed to help
29:58police locate him
29:59is Laura
30:01because he was still
30:03at large
30:04and because he was
30:05armed and considered
30:06dangerous
30:07the priority
30:09was to locate
30:10Tony Lawrence
30:12the first time
30:14I met Laura
30:14was at
30:16Castle Hill Hospital
30:18her hair was
30:21matted
30:22in her own blood
30:23despite the fact
30:25that she was
30:26clearly in a
30:27bad way
30:28she was able to
30:29give us
30:30lots of information
30:31so she was able
30:32to fill in
30:33some of those gaps
30:34for us
30:34Laura was able
30:40to tell
30:40the police
30:41he had
30:42left the scene
30:43in a vehicle
30:44but wasn't able
30:45to give
30:46what direction
30:46to say
30:48this is a
30:49sleepy village
30:49is taking it
30:50to another level
30:51so that car
30:53at that time
30:55very loud
30:57all logical
30:58things tell you
30:59that that was
31:00the vehicle
31:01that he was
31:01driving away in
31:02there was
31:04intelligence
31:05that suggested
31:05that after
31:07Tony Lawrence
31:08had left
31:08the scene
31:09he was able
31:10to get into
31:11a motorhome
31:12and because
31:13the motorhome
31:14was a
31:14hire vehicle
31:15it had a
31:16tracker installed
31:17so through
31:19ANPR
31:19they were able
31:20to track
31:21at some point
31:22where the
31:22motorhome was
31:23Lawrence had
31:26made his way
31:27into the
31:27North Yorkshire
31:28area
31:29and so for
31:29that reason
31:30Humberside
31:31police officers
31:32and North Yorkshire
31:33officers would
31:33have worked
31:34together
31:34to try and
31:35locate him
31:35we don't know
31:37how Anthony
31:38Lawrence was
31:39feeling at this
31:40point but what
31:40we do know
31:41is that somebody
31:42who felt
31:43persecuted by
31:44the world
31:45and here he
31:46is actually
31:46for the first
31:47time he really
31:48is being
31:49pursued
31:49and here he
31:50is holed up
31:51in a camper
31:52van in the
31:53middle of nowhere
31:54while everybody
31:55is looking for
31:55him
31:55the manhunt
32:07for Anthony
32:08Lawrence
32:08continues for
32:0948 hours
32:10I was constantly
32:12saying
32:12any news
32:14any news
32:15we were able
32:16to tell
32:18Laura that
32:18he had been
32:19located
32:20in the
32:21motorhome
32:21that armed
32:23response had
32:24entered the
32:25motorhome
32:25and that
32:26Tony Lawrence
32:27was dead
32:28inside the
32:29motorhome
32:29he'd taken
32:33an overdose
32:34of tablets
32:35I was angry
32:38I thought
32:38I can't believe
32:39you've done
32:39destroyed my
32:40family
32:41and you've
32:42killed yourself
32:42just seemed
32:44all so
32:44pointless
32:45I've been
32:48deployed as a
32:48family liaison
32:49officer to
32:50several incidents
32:51and each
32:52incident is
32:53unique
32:54but by far
32:56I think
32:56this was
32:58the most
32:59disturbing
33:00harrowing
33:02and distressing
33:03deployment
33:04there was
33:07a coroner's
33:08inquest
33:08in order for
33:09the coroner
33:10to satisfy
33:11himself about
33:11the circumstances
33:12of the death
33:14then
33:15we still have
33:16to continue
33:17with the
33:17investigation
33:18what police
33:22on earth
33:23reveals a
33:24deeply
33:24disturbing
33:25picture
33:25when they
33:27started to
33:28piece everything
33:28together
33:29about the
33:31fact that
33:31he'd hired
33:32the van
33:33and then
33:34he'd sort
33:35of arranged
33:36to have
33:37his dog
33:37removed
33:39and then
33:40I got
33:41the real
33:42picture of
33:43how this
33:43was meticulously
33:45planned
33:45there were
33:47listening devices
33:48in
33:49Laura's
33:50property
33:51he'd
33:53put a
33:53recording
33:54device
33:54on his
33:55wall
33:55to enable
33:56him to
33:57hear what
33:58Shane
33:58and Laura
33:59were saying
34:00he's listening
34:01to them
34:02talking about
34:04him being
34:05evicted
34:05at that point
34:07he started
34:08to
34:09in his own
34:10mind
34:10I think
34:10think of a
34:12way
34:12to get rid
34:13of them
34:13both
34:13not only
34:15did he
34:15acquire
34:16one
34:16crossbows
34:17my
34:17understanding
34:17is
34:18he got
34:18three
34:19crossbows
34:19he didn't
34:20want to
34:21take any
34:22chances
34:22on it
34:24going wrong
34:25he dismantled
34:27that
34:28partition wall
34:29brick by brick
34:30and then got rid
34:31of the bricks
34:31as well
34:32he would have
34:34been in the
34:34property at some
34:35point having a
34:36good look around
34:37so yeah there was
34:38something very
34:39militaristic about
34:40his planning
34:41in fact
34:43the former
34:44territorial army
34:45reservist
34:46had been
34:46planning for
34:47exactly
34:4812 months
34:49to the day
34:50it was exactly
34:51you know a year
34:52that he'd threatened
34:52to kill us
34:53in 2017
34:55with the axe
34:57and then exactly
34:57a year to the day
34:58he'd actually
34:59managed to
35:01obviously get into
35:02our house
35:02and kill Shane
35:04and attempt to
35:04kill me
35:05the happy future
35:15that Laura and
35:16Shane were
35:16planning
35:17is in
35:18tatters
35:18Laura just
35:21said she wanted
35:22to die
35:22she didn't
35:24want to live
35:24I was already
35:27severely depressed
35:28anyway
35:29and grieving
35:30and I thought
35:31how am I
35:32going to
35:32have this
35:34baby
35:34what happens
35:35if I don't
35:35feel anything
35:36I've just got
35:37to think about
35:37getting Shane's
35:39funeral sorted
35:40and looking after
35:41Isabelle
35:41and just
35:42keep focused
35:43on that
35:44500 people
35:49attended his
35:50funeral
35:51now probably
35:51five people
35:53might attend
35:53my funeral
35:54but at the age
35:55of 30
35:56he had done
35:57so much
35:58and he'd
35:58helped so
35:59many people
36:00it took
36:02a while
36:03for us
36:03to get
36:04through to
36:05her
36:05that this
36:06baby
36:06was still
36:07going to
36:07be as
36:08loved
36:08with or
36:09without
36:09Shane
36:10here
36:10it was a
36:12part of
36:12him
36:12that she
36:13could
36:13treasure
36:14forever
36:14as soon as
36:16she was
36:16born
36:16it was
36:17instant
36:17she looked
36:18just like
36:19her dad
36:19and that
36:20sort of
36:21helped
36:21massively
36:22you know
36:23sometimes
36:23it absolutely
36:24fills me
36:24with sadness
36:25but then
36:25there's a lot
36:26of other
36:26times where
36:27it brings
36:27me
36:27a massive
36:28amount
36:28of comfort
36:29because
36:32Anthony
36:33Lawrence
36:33took his
36:34own life
36:34there could
36:35be no
36:35criminal
36:36trial
36:36instead
36:38an inquest
36:39is ordered
36:40I'm Gemma
36:42Vine
36:42I was the
36:43solicitor
36:44who represented
36:44Laura Sugden
36:45at Shane
36:46Gilmer's
36:46inquest
36:47so the
36:49inquest
36:49took place
36:50in April
36:512021
36:52and it
36:54was over
36:55the space
36:56of a week
36:56in Hull
36:57Coroner's
36:57Court
36:58and the
36:59point of
37:00the inquest
37:00was to
37:01determine
37:01essentially
37:02how and
37:03in what
37:03circumstances
37:04Shane
37:04died
37:05police
37:10attending
37:11Laura's
37:11property
37:12had to
37:12risk
37:12assess
37:13the
37:13situation
37:13before
37:14deploying
37:14an
37:14armed
37:15response
37:15unit
37:15the
37:17delay
37:18was
37:18caused
37:19primarily
37:19because
37:20of
37:20the
37:20fact
37:20it
37:21was
37:21a
37:21crossbow
37:21at that
37:22time
37:23they didn't
37:24know where
37:24Anthony
37:24Lawrence
37:25was as to
37:26whether he
37:27was in the
37:28grounds or in
37:29the woods or
37:30fields nearby
37:31they have to
37:35meet up and
37:36plan how
37:36they're going
37:37to go around
37:37the village
37:38and cover
37:38it
37:39so there's
37:39a time
37:40element
37:40there
37:40time is
37:42massively
37:42important
37:43in respect
37:44of
37:45Shane's
37:46injuries
37:46there was a
37:48recognition by
37:49the police
37:50and the
37:51ambulance
37:51service
37:52obviously as
37:52well
37:53that the
37:54lethality
37:54of a
37:55crossbow
37:55the fact
37:56it can
37:56be fired
37:56at distance
37:57the fact
37:58it's
37:58silent
37:58all played
37:59in effect
38:00on whether
38:00or not
38:01they could
38:01approach
38:02the property
38:02and at
38:02what time
38:03the majority
38:04of the inquest
38:05concentrated on
38:06what actually
38:06happened on
38:07the 12th
38:08he was
38:10clearly
38:10expecting
38:11at some
38:12point for
38:12Laura to
38:12open that
38:13door or
38:13Shane
38:14and when
38:15she pushed
38:15the door
38:15open
38:16I don't
38:16think she
38:17could
38:17clearly
38:17see him
38:18because
38:18of the
38:18head
38:18torch
38:19so
38:20yeah
38:21it was
38:22very
38:22difficult
38:23for
38:23Laura to
38:24understand
38:24who it
38:26was
38:26and what
38:26was
38:27happening
38:27the inquest
38:30heard of
38:31Shane's
38:31catastrophic
38:32injuries
38:32and how
38:33remarkably
38:33he managed
38:34to place
38:35a 999
38:35call to
38:36summon help
38:37for
38:37Laura
38:37Laura's
38:39first call
38:40was around
38:40918
38:41after she'd
38:43managed to
38:43escape the
38:44property
38:44Shane was
38:46unable to
38:46call himself
38:47at around
38:49half past
38:49nine
38:49and a
38:52second call
38:52a few
38:53minutes after
38:53that as
38:54well
38:54that call
38:55remained
38:55open until
38:56the paramedics
38:57arrived
38:57once that
39:04bolt went in
39:04between 200
39:05to 400 feet
39:07per second
39:07that's what
39:08we're talking
39:09about
39:09once it
39:10went into
39:10his side
39:11it's destroyed
39:12most of his
39:12organs
39:12internal organs
39:13on that
39:14side of
39:14his body
39:14and that's
39:16within seconds
39:17it was quite
39:20difficult to
39:21get the bolt
39:21out of his
39:23spine
39:23because there
39:24was that much
39:25force that
39:25had embedded
39:26into it
39:27Shane didn't
39:30know where
39:30Laura was
39:31she'd left
39:33the bedroom
39:34but he wasn't
39:35sure what
39:35had happened
39:36to her
39:36and so for
39:37that reason
39:38he dragged
39:39himself down
39:40the stairs
39:40to the
39:41sitting room
39:42to make
39:44a call
39:44from the
39:45landline
39:45because he
39:45didn't have
39:46his mobile
39:46phone
39:47the fact
39:50that his
39:50arm had
39:51been pinned
39:52to his
39:52body
39:53and he'd
39:54lost an
39:54awful lot
39:55of blood
39:55must have
39:56been so
39:57so painful
39:58for him
39:59it was
40:01absolutely
40:01horrific
40:02there was
40:03blood all
40:03over the
40:04stairs
40:04and you
40:05didn't need
40:05to be an
40:06expert
40:06to know
40:07what had
40:07happened
40:08he was
40:09trying to
40:09get down
40:10the stairs
40:11whilst
40:12bleeding to
40:13death
40:14and it
40:16was
40:16horrific
40:17beyond
40:19imagination
40:19the coroner's
40:23verdict was
40:24recorded
40:24Shane's
40:25death
40:26was an
40:27unlawful
40:27killing
40:28the sheer
40:30horror of
40:31the incident
40:31prompted him
40:32to comment
40:33on the ease
40:34of acquiring
40:35crossbows
40:35the coroner
40:37used his
40:37powers
40:37under the
40:39Coroner's
40:39Injustice Act
40:40to do a
40:40prevention of
40:41future deaths
40:41report
40:42and that
40:43report went
40:43to the
40:44home office
40:44to highlight
40:46his concerns
40:47the bigger
40:50question is
40:51how easily
40:52accessible
40:54crossbows are
40:55for anyone
40:56who can
40:57purport to
40:57be 18
40:58I never
41:00anticipated
41:02what damage
41:04that it
41:05could do
41:07One of the
41:08things that
41:09was described
41:09to us was
41:10that it's
41:12got the
41:12accuracy of
41:13a rifle
41:14for example
41:15and can
41:16shoot from
41:17the same
41:17sort of
41:18distance
41:18but with
41:19more force
41:20and it's
41:21quiet
41:21I can
41:24go onto
41:25a website
41:26and buy
41:27a crossbow
41:28for ÂŖ89
41:29send them
41:31my money
41:32instantly
41:33and the
41:33only thing
41:34they require
41:35is some
41:36kind of
41:36verification
41:37that I'm
41:38over 18
41:39no matter
41:40whether they've
41:41got a criminal
41:42record
41:42no matter
41:43whether they've
41:44perhaps got
41:44mental health
41:44history
41:45Anthony Lawrence
41:48had he
41:49tried to
41:50purchase a gun
41:50and get a
41:51licence for it
41:51wouldn't have
41:52got one
41:52we did a
41:54freedom of
41:54information
41:54request of
41:55all police
41:56forces in
41:562021
41:57of the 43
41:59police forces
42:00in England
42:00and Wales
42:01every single
42:02one of them
42:03had got
42:03recorded
42:04incidents
42:05involving
42:06crossbows
42:06but what we
42:07can't allow
42:08is
42:09people to
42:09just be
42:10blase
42:10we have
42:12to draw
42:13the line
42:13on this
42:13somewhere
42:14seven years
42:18on
42:19Laura is
42:20still having
42:20surgery
42:20from the
42:21injuries
42:21that she
42:22sustained
42:22from the
42:23bolt
42:23to her
42:23head
42:24she
42:25juggles
42:26being a
42:26single
42:26mum
42:26to her
42:27daughters
42:27Isabel
42:28and Ella
42:28alongside
42:30raising
42:30awareness
42:31and fighting
42:31to get
42:32changes
42:32in
42:33crossbow
42:33legislation
42:34Laura
42:35has
42:36tirelessly
42:37campaigned
42:38over the
42:38past few
42:39years
42:39she's
42:40a very
42:41very strong
42:42individual
42:43probably one
42:44of the
42:44strongest
42:44women
42:45I've ever
42:45met
42:45to be
42:46honest
42:46she's
42:48trying to
42:48make a
42:49positive
42:49out of
42:50a horrible
42:51traumatic
42:52incident
42:53I don't think
42:55many people
42:56could have
42:56gone through
42:56what she's
42:57been through
42:58and put
42:59her own
42:59trauma
43:00out there
43:01for everyone
43:02to hear
43:03and know
43:03about
43:04just so
43:04she can
43:05get
43:05something
43:05passed
43:06that
43:06could
43:06help
43:07future
43:07generations
43:08If this
43:11law can
43:11change
43:12that's a
43:13legacy
43:13it's a
43:15legacy
43:16for
43:16what
43:17happened
43:17to
43:17Shane
43:18for
43:18what
43:18happened
43:18to
43:19Laura
43:20what's
43:20happened
43:21to
43:21their
43:21families
43:22I could
43:24say to
43:25Ella
43:25when she's
43:26older
43:26that
43:26Laura's
43:27been
43:27changed
43:28because
43:28of what
43:29happened
43:29to
43:29your
43:29dad
43:30and
43:30it's
43:30not
43:30going
43:30to
43:30make
43:31it
43:31any
43:31easier
43:31but
43:32the
43:33impact
43:33that
43:34would
43:34have
43:34on
43:34other
43:34people
43:35as
43:35well
43:35potentially
43:36some
43:37people
43:38not being
43:38able to
43:39just buy
43:39crossbows
43:40is going
43:40to change
43:41people's
43:41lives
43:41Shane
43:44Gilmer
43:44lived to
43:45help
43:45others
43:45in
43:472018
43:47Anthony
43:48Lawrence
43:49violently
43:50ended
43:50his
43:50life
43:50ensuring
43:52a romantic
43:52date
43:53with his
43:53partner
43:53would be
43:54Shane's
43:55last
