00:34This year, a world-leading cruise line is back sailing a full season from the UK
00:39for the first time in a decade
00:42Meet the MS Neustadtendam

00:48with 12 passenger decks
00:50Well ready for this

00:59We are expected to do everything perfectly at all times
01:02And excursions day and night
01:05At the same time, her sister ship, the MS Rotterdam
01:08is cruising through the Americas

01:13Who's excited?

01:23Let's go
01:24Oh, it's gorgeous
01:25Lovely
01:26Yes, let's go
01:27Over the course of the cruising season
01:29We'll be following both ships
01:31As they travel around the Americas
01:33North Africa
01:35And Europe
01:37This time, the Rotterdam cruises into Columbia
01:42For an excursion with a difference
01:45Organised chaos
01:47And in Europe
01:50Crew on the new Stattendam
01:52Celebrate Dutch style
01:53With the biggest party the ship has ever planned
01:56Help me welcome your food and beverage team
02:18Passengers on the cruise voyaging around the Caribbean
02:21Are settling in well to luxury life
02:26Sailing on a deluxe voyage across shimmering seas
02:30The Super Cruiser is on a 14-day tour
02:33Docking in destinations including the Bahamas, Jamaica and Columbia
02:38For many, getting to visit multiple locations is the highlight of cruising
02:44From Jamaica
02:46Wow
02:47To the Bahamas
02:48Let's go!
02:49Costa Rica
02:50To Grand Cayman
02:52Passengers get a taste of paradise
02:54At every stop
02:56Today, the ship is docked in the Colombian city of Cartagena
03:02And amongst the 1,300 passengers eager to explore
03:05Are Midlands couple Melanie and Neville
03:08Who've booked a day with a difference
03:10So these all must be going on other excursions
03:14Yeah
03:15It's our second cruise
03:17When we realised all the places we were going
03:19We thought, oh yeah
03:20This is what we wanted to come this time
03:23And this is our tenth year together
03:25So we got together
03:26Kind of an anniversary as well
03:28They may have been together a decade
03:31But things are about to heat up for these two
03:34We're up to the volcano
03:36For a mud bath, I'm looking forward to
03:39But a bit apprehensive at the same time
03:41It's just the volcano bit
03:43Yeah
03:44Makes you a bit nervous
03:45Passengers pass through an identity system
03:49Every time they get off and on the ship
03:51It ensures everyone's returned before it sets sail again
03:56But first, there's the small matter of identifying the correct tour bus
04:01Out of over 20 heading off on different excursions
04:05Look for the bus
04:07It's something with volcano, aren't it?
04:10Yeah, she did say all the way down the bottom
04:12How did she?
04:13It's even more
04:15Thank you
04:17They went to the mud volcano
04:22Located on the country's northern coast
04:29Cartagena is one of South America's oldest colonial cities
04:33And a gateway to this nation of 50 million people
04:37At more than four and a half times the size of the UK
04:41Columbia has Caribbean and Pacific coastlines
04:45And terrain that ranges from the Andes mountains
04:48To volcanoes and tropical forests
04:56But today, the passengers will be experiencing something totally different
05:03El Totumo isn't a volcano in the ordinary sense
05:06And locals have spotted an opportunity for tourism
05:09Instead of molten hot lava, this volcano bubbles with a muddy mixture of water, sediment and methane gases
05:19That's believed to be infused with mineral-rich properties
05:26I've got bikini on under here
05:28Shall we take our clothes off and leave them here?
05:30Erm, I believe so
05:32Yeah?
05:33Yeah, that's what they said
05:34It's all safe, so
05:35Yeah
05:36Cues of daring visitors line up to dunk themselves in the warm mud bath
05:42Tradition has it the volcano was a problem for local people
05:47So a priest poured holy water onto the lava
05:50Turning it into mud
05:52Said to have cleansing and rejuvenating effects
05:55Well, I feel alright
05:58I'm pretty bit of an animal again
06:02I'm pretty bit of an animal
06:03I'm pretty bit of an animal
06:04I'm gonna die
06:05You're gonna die, dude
06:06Yes
06:07Head first
06:08Head first
06:09You up
06:10Yes
06:11Yeah
06:12Last
06:14Across the ocean, over 5,000 miles away
06:22Is another super vessel in the Holland America fleet
06:27Voyaging across North Africa and Europe
06:29This vast cruise ship is docking in destinations including Tenerife, Lanzarote and the Netherlands
06:37Today, the ship is on its way into Rotterdam
06:40Where passengers are excited to head off on excursions with a Dutch flavour
06:45Thank you so much
06:46Thank you
06:47My name is Lysia and I am the assistant shore excursion manager
06:54During the two week cruise, South African Lysia Tongo will be helping to sell and manage nearly 100 different excursion options
07:03My job is extremely busy
07:06We're actually selling them an experience of what possibilities of excursions to do ashore
07:13We sell them a dream, just joking
07:17Perched on the edge of the city, Rotterdam Port is an easy stepping stone to fulfilling those dreams
07:24But before people can disembark, British security officer Rich Fontaine has to coordinate a safe docking into the port
07:31I was just about to call you
07:34Here, close deck one
07:36And we use our gangway on A deck
07:38When the captain's docking the ship, he obviously needs a bit of help
07:42Where he's going to stop
07:44So he has myself, who I'm concerned for the gangways, where the gangway needs to be
07:48We're just opening up the doors here in the rival runner dam
07:54We're going backwards, did you notice?
07:57Or astern, we should say
07:59We're going astern at the moment
08:01And approaching the dock
08:03Once we've opened up the side door
08:06It can be a dangerous area to be
08:09You have to keep your wits about you, concentrate
08:12The guys will rope it off
08:14And I will just make sure that nobody else comes along
08:18And suddenly sees the door open and wants to have a look outside and see what the weather's like
08:22We're going to be taking this jetway into this break here
08:26As we get alongside the dock, then we communicate with the bridge
08:31If the dock is clear for us to land the gangway
08:34OK, Richard, position
08:36Deck two is good, Captain
08:39We shall accept the gangway
08:41It's going to be a busy day today
08:43There are people going off on excursions
08:46Rotterdam is home to the largest port in Europe
08:50And handles approximately 28,000 seafaring vessels a year
08:53For many of the crew, the cultural cruises of Europe are a highlight
09:01You good?
09:04Helping Lysia to coordinate the busy day of excursions
09:08Is Diane Brunidor from the Philippines
09:11Diane is my colleague
09:13She is new, not new to ships, but she's new to the department
09:17Lysia? Yes, Paul?
09:19Can you hold my bag for a moment?
09:20In order to understand the excursions they're selling
09:24The shore excursion team joins the passengers whenever the opportunity arises
09:29And today, the pair are mixing business with pleasure
09:33On an excursion 33 miles north of Rotterdam
09:37To the Kirchenhof Botanical Garden
09:39The country may be best known for canals, bikes and windows
09:43But tulips are an icon too
09:47Flower cultivation in the Netherlands is worth nearly 4 billion pounds a year
09:54It controls about 60% of the global market
09:58And is often described as the Silicon Valley of the flower industry
10:02The tulip festival in Kirchenhof is one of the best to visit in Holland
10:07I say this because the tulips can only bloom in a certain time in the year
10:13So unfortunately last season when I was on this very same ship
10:16I was unable to go
10:18But this time I had the opportunity to finally go there
10:22Tulips!
10:23There's a sense of anticipation on the ship too
10:32The crew are getting ready to throw passengers the biggest party they've ever had on board
10:37We're heading up to the Lido
10:39Because that's where the festivities are
10:42Today, Hamish Davis, who hails from Jamaica
10:45Is responsible for coordinating everything it takes to throw a party for a thousand people
10:52Hi, good morning
10:55I'm the entertainment director
10:57And I'm responsible for all onboard entertainment activities and events
11:00Anything that is fun and engaging from an entertainment standpoint
11:04I'm responsible for putting that program together
11:08And presenting it to our guests to enhance their cruise experience
11:11I brought my handy-dandy tape measure
11:16And the only reason for that is because real estate here is a little bit hard to come by
11:22And this is going to be where the dance floor is
11:25The cruise line has Dutch heritage
11:28And its first ship sailed from the Netherlands to New York City in 1872
11:33Tonight's party marks King's Day
11:36A public holiday in the Netherlands
11:37To commemorate the birthday of King Willem Alexander
11:41And with orange being the national colour
11:44It's the theme of tonight's extra special event
11:47An orange party is the biggest party of the cruise
11:50In the Netherlands it's also hugely celebrated
11:53So we wanted to do our take on that also
11:56This orange party in particular is going to be massive
11:59Because the King's birthday falls within the same timeframe that we would have our orange party
12:04Hence we're going to make it bigger, better and just more elaborate
12:09It's going to be a festive event
12:11To accommodate the bigger event
12:13The part has been shifted from its usual location in the billboard lounge on the second deck
12:18To the more spacious Lido deck
12:20So all the usual arrangements must be scaled up
12:24Hey Romer
12:26Hey
12:27How's it going?
12:28All good
12:29Good, we're going to meet the timeline for soundcheck
12:30Yeah, we will
12:313 o'clock
12:33There's quite a bit of planning that is involved
12:35I need to send out a running order of what it is that we intend on doing
12:40Timelines, this is where we think the satellite bars should go
12:45The lounge chairs, at what time they need to be removed
12:48So we can start the set up, where we're going to have the stage
12:51What signage we're going to have
12:53So everything has been put in place to build up to the big event
12:56All right, thank you
12:57All right, I'll let you get back to it
12:59All right, all right
13:01With over 700 Dutch passengers on board
13:04It's important that Hamish and his team deliver a party that they'll be proud of
13:09For our Dutch guests, they're looking forward to celebrating the same way in which they would at home
13:14I remember I was saying about getting festive, if you look to your right
13:18He's ready man, that's awesome
13:20So for us, we need to make sure that we not only deliver upon that, but exceed that expectation
13:26Not only for Dutch guests, but also other guests who have never experienced such an event
13:31So this gives you a pretty good overview of what tonight's going to look like
13:35Just imagine, lounge chairs are gone, all our lights are up
13:39Hundreds of people just here, having a good time
13:43It is indeed a very big deal
13:46It's going to be awesome
13:50On its voyage around North Africa and Europe, Holland America's super vessel is docked in the Dutch city of Rotterdam
14:02Where the thousand strong crew are working around the clock to give passengers the holiday of a lifetime
14:09Cheers, cheers
14:11From entertainment to housekeeping, galley to maintenance, every crew member is an essential cog in a well-oiled machine
14:22But while some roles are more obvious, others are rather niche
14:26I am Ricardo Galope, I'm a head tailor, I am from Manila, Philippines
14:37I'm working at ship for about almost 30 years
14:41Sounds good, yeah?
14:43Ricardo oversees a small team
14:46And together they run a seamless operation, doing minor repairs for guests
14:51But mainly ensuring the staff look smart
14:53Each crew, they are entitled to two jackets
14:58So in my 29 years in this cruise ship, I'm sure I made about thousands of jackets
15:05We are responsible for the crew
15:08And every uniform, day and night, that needs to be altered
15:13I enjoy sewing, I enjoy creating something
15:19Like mostly the jacket, this is my specialty now
15:25Yeah
15:29Next in line for a Ricardo special
15:32Good afternoon Ricardo, hello
15:34Is hotel executive assistant Jack Spaniga
15:37Who joined the ship four months ago when it was sailing around the Caribbean
15:42Can I come by in about 10 minutes?
15:45I remember the jacket that I mentioned
15:46We visited places in Caribbean and of course it's not as much as different from where I came from in the Philippines
15:50It's hot, perfect for me
15:52But then we just crossed Europe and it's getting really colder
15:56I think I'm going to die
15:58So that's why the jacket is essential for me
16:01Yeah, perfect, thank you, I'll see you shortly, thank you, bye
16:02While Jex gets kitted out for the cold
16:05Across the Atlantic, the new Statendom's sister ship, MS Rotterdam, is cruising the balmy climes of the Caribbean
16:08Where in Colombia, it's finally Neville and Melanie's turn to take the plunge into the volcanic mud bath
16:13But whichever way you choose to slide into the sludge, at just four and a half meters across, only about 15 people can fit in at a time
16:18So it does get rather cozy
16:19Hello
16:20It's very slimy
16:21Hello
16:22It's very slimy
16:23Yeah
16:24Yeah
16:25He's going to kick things down
16:26Thank you
16:27I'm going to kick things down
16:28Its okay
16:29I'm going to kick things down
16:30So cooking is a little bit
16:32Where in Colombia, it's finally Neville and Melanie's turn to take the plunge into the volcanic mud bath
16:35But whichever way you choose to slide into the sludge, at just four and a half meters across, only about 15 people can fit in at a time
16:42So it does get rather cozy
16:44Hello
16:45It's very slimy
16:47How are you doing?
16:50it's wonderful it's very slimy but it's lovely it's soothing lovely massage free massage that
17:06was brilliant it's thick it's amazing organized chaos it's gonna be hard
17:14ah melanie and neville may now be on intimate terms with their fellow cruisers
17:22but it seems the eruption of methane bubbles is still a bit awkward
17:34visitors can spend as much as 30 minutes marinating in the gloop before it's time to take stock
17:41getting into the mud was an absolutely fabulous experience well it felt like heaven
17:47to me it felt like being in melted milk chocolate i have to wait and see when it's washed off yes
17:57and for a tip local ladies will rinse you with water from lake to tulo i could have stayed in
18:04there all day you have to so it's better than a jacuzzi to be fair what do you reckon just a bit
18:13whilst melanie and neville may have created some memorable muddy moments
18:19en route to a less intimate excursion some passengers from the european cruise
18:24have chosen to visit the world famous tulip festival at kirkenhof
18:28and today shore excursion duo lissia and diane are joining the tour i was scrolling through instagram
18:37again and i saw a post it says oh eight things to do before you die you know visit the kirkenhof
18:44tulip festival in in the netherlands and i'm like this is it this is it so there's this particular spot
18:52behind is like a windmill i think there's gonna be our mission to hunt for that i'm like i want that
18:56exact same picture with the windmill in the background and the tulips on either side okay
19:02we're ready to go let's go let's go for lissia joining the trip is an important part of her job
19:10as she needs to have in-depth knowledge of the excursion she's selling so we just are doing a site
19:17inspection of this particular excursions just to see if the excursion runs as described and then we're just
19:23noting what time we arrived how long it took us to get there and then afterwards we just enjoy the
19:29excursion just like any other guests so yeah kirkenhof opened to the public in 1950 after a group of
19:37growers and exporters decided to exhibit their spring flowering bulbs in its first year it attracted nearly
19:45a quarter of a million visitors now we're at the entrance we're about to scan in our tickets for
19:51our group with the passengers all safely through diane and lissia are free to have a bit of fun
19:58this is the windmill at the back so the bucket list spot has to be here so we just have to go
20:03straight down there then we're gonna find the windmill let's go let's go let's go the garden offers
20:10different designs every year which requires hand planting seven million bulbs each autumn
20:18nowadays 1.4 million visitors a year come to see the results in bloom
20:23i sponsored the windmill finally windmill
20:34originally located in a northern town the century-old pumping mill was donated to the gardens in 1957
20:42by none other than holland america line this is the perfect angle ready
20:48oh you got it yay this is perfect i love it this is perfect okay you got it
21:00felicia taking photos isn't just about her social media feed
21:05i am normally on the ship for about six months at a time back home i live with my husband and my
21:12beautiful baby boy uh he is four years old as a mom traveling away from my son at the beginning was
21:20horrible but then i want my babies to know that i'm a working mom because my mom used to be a traveling
21:26mom as well she used to tell us you're gonna sleep four times and then i'll see you and that's the same
21:32thing that i do for my son right now going back home and telling the story showing the pictures my son
21:39would be like mommy you've been there because i show him all the photos i show him all the videos
21:44it's amazing it's a great way to open up the world to him and prep him for when we're about
21:49to travel with him here time to go let's do it
21:57lissia's colleagues on the ship are gearing up for a special dutch celebration
22:02an orange themed party to mark king's day
22:04hi good afternoon how are you doing today are you guys having a good time
22:13ensuring the party guests have all the food and drink they want
22:16falls to tanberg de souza from india i am the food and beverage director i'm in charge for all the
22:22services provided by the front of the house which is the restaurant uh it's the beverage department as
22:28well as the culinary department morning girls how are you i started as a snack steward in 2001
22:36on a smaller ship after snack steward i was an assistant waiter senior waiter head waiter
22:42assistant metody worked my way along climb the steps i just love it
22:49hey jovani how are you today good good so from a food and beverage operations uh uh perspective uh it's
22:56a huge operation and it's a huge day for all of us we take it very seriously and we started from
23:02the morning so what are you what are you making tonight doing the dutch orange prints wow that's
23:07interesting very nice am i going to get drunk with that maybe for the orange party we serve blood orange
23:15gin which is mixed with almost all of our cocktails to make our colorful glasses this orange is the color
23:21for holland wow that's good nice color beautiful they're slightly less of a festive spirit at the tulip festival
23:36lysia and diane are on duty again rallying the troops to get passengers back to the ship on time
23:43number six but the numbers aren't adding up there's um recounted earlier it was 36 guests
23:51and now when the tour guide was counting the guests seated it's only 35 including us so we're
23:56missing one person we're gonna go back and try and see if we can locate them anybody for bus number six
24:03bus number six if we do still have somebody missing
24:06um i say that we have to give them 15 minutes and that's why i actively look for the person that's
24:15what i do when i'm on an excursion if it's uh already 15 minutes after the agreed departure time
24:21we will leave whoever that was left behind so we're gonna go and check hopefully we'll find them
24:26if not why right because the bus have a schedule we have to respect that no we have to go
24:48after its stop in waterdam holland america's european voyage has set sail once again
24:53and shore excursion duo lysia and diane need to chew over their findings from the tulip trip so it
25:02was a five-minute walk from the parking lot to the main entrance but first there's the matter of the
25:07missing person we must also remember that we left one guest behind so we have to put that in the
25:12reports as well do we have information on whether or what happened to him or her so the guest didn't
25:18come forward to us but we did have a zero count which means everybody made it on board on time
25:24for the departure time so he or she made it back deep down i was okay because we have multiple buses
25:30with multiple times so i was not as worried because there is a way that the guests can make it back
25:36on the ship so leisha tell me since we were able to get your bucket list you like the photos i did like
25:43the photo thank you so much i like this one in particular awesome this one was the best yeah
25:51i was able to get the money shot the money shot good job
26:00after a day of doing as much or as little as they please
26:03the passengers still have time for chilling
26:09but on the lido deck the crew are working against the clock to prepare for the orange themed party
26:14an extra special celebration for the dutch king's birthday so plan a b and c yes plan a the dji system
26:25with over 700 dutch passengers on board the vessel
26:29it's important that the party provides a full flavor of their national festival
26:34it's a very big deal for our dutch guests so we need to ensure the recipes are properly followed
26:39because we are serving a lots of dutch snacks actually only dutch snacks
26:44preparation of all the traditional treats falls under the watchful eye of executive chef
26:49jundiel marcelo guys orange party tonight executive chef is fully in charge for the whole ship i'm
26:58handling about 200 cooks originally from the philippines jundiel spent four years in culinary college
27:06followed by nine years working as a baker next are we ready for the uh frying up the bushy ball
27:13yes sir we have the new oil here already over the 15 years on the cruise line he's worked his way up
27:19from commie to kitchen commander and he's no stranger to dutch delicacies we are preparing six
27:26kinds of hot and cold snacks because it's a celebration of dutch heritage so we celebrate with the dutch
27:32food bosch ball for the bitter ball and the cheese and chutney sausage roll for tonight's party judiel and
27:41his team will prep and serve over 1400 dutch snacks we have the sausage roll it's one of the dutch delicacy
27:50and it is rolled up in the puff pastry there will be 400 dutch sausage rolls being made which are much
27:57the same as their british cousins and 300 bossa bollen which is essentially an overgrown chocolate coated
28:05profiterole during the evening's event the lineup of traditional treats will be

43:12Hello. Hello. Hello.
43:20On the Lido deck, Hamish's organisational efforts are already starting to pay off.
43:25It's more fun for us when we see how much fun the guests are having, right? It is a lot
43:32of work putting it together, but once you see it come to fruition, then it's just, yeah,
43:37it's, it's well worth it.
43:49In the galley, there are 400 sausage rolls, 300 bossa bollen, 20 kilos of cheese and many
43:57more Dutch treats ready to serve to the partygoers. The atmosphere in the kitchen is hot, to be
44:03honest. But the staff also need to look the part. The restaurant team, they are wearing
44:09eyes, orange neckties. For me, I have my own.
44:16Orange wig.
44:18Hey, money. Ready for party? Wow, good job, guys. Good job.
44:25Al, let's go.
44:29With all the kitchens' party prep complete, Joondiel leads his team on a grand parade around

45:28The Orange Party, it's busy, it's packed, it's loud. Oh my God!
45:36Coming to the Philippines is something very new to me. Culture-wise, I'm learning a lot.
45:40So that Congo dance, this and that, well, it's fun.
45:47Party was absolutely amazing. Managed to do some dancing, spoke loads of people, had one or two drinks.
45:56Definitely think it's going to be a late one for everybody tonight.
45:59We're going to go straight until they say when.
46:02I'm going to go back there, and I'm going to dance.
46:04Goodbye.
46:10Next time, in the Caribbean, the passengers take it slow.
46:17My sort of speed, the slow.
46:19But for the crew, it's full steam ahead.
46:21Could you proceed to deck three? The smoke detector activated.
46:25The grand opening looms, so it times to get cracking on the window display at our Yorkshire shop.
46:29Stream or watch new tomorrow at eight.
46:32New first dates, too, with an eighties romantic.
46:34And a Boris-loving politics fan, not these two.
